My wife and I are looking for a specific type of MMO, but having trouble finding it.

Hi, are there any open world MMO's that are pvp-based, and do not have a cash shop?  Monthly subs are fine with us.  We played Darkfall 1 and DF:UW, and we know about the 2 new DF's, but they really are unfinished products at the moment, and RoA has instant travel all over the map, which is an immersion killer, so we are not really looking to that game.  I know Camelot Unchained is supposedly what I'm looking for, but until it is out, it might as well be vaporware.  Full loot or not is not a deal breaker, fine with either.  I'm even fine with zones, like Everquest 1, as long as the zones are open and not instanced.  I feel that instances have no place in MMO's, because then it is not an MMO.  Thanks for any advice you could give us.

DF DND doesn't have instant travel, there are no teleport at all.
Apart for that, at the moment there is little choice as most of the Sandbox PvP depend on Cash Shops to a certain degree.

Maybe give Albion a try, I think its PvP rule-set is pretty similar to DF, so personally it is not for me, but you might like it, you kinda need to subscribe but the Cash Shop should not bother you much (at least that's what I heard).

is almost a remake of EQ if you liked it. Brad McQuaid said there would be PvP servers like Tallon Zek in EQ. Its in Pre Alpha atm so beta will be sometime late next year.

You're going to have a tough time finding something that doesn't lean on a cash shop. Certainly nothing along the lines of DF.

I've had fun PvPing in Blade and Soul, Guild Wars 2, and ESO. But I don't think any of them are exactly what you're looking for.

It's not high fantasy, but Eve is probably the standard for open-world Sandbox PvP, and has been for quite some time.

SIRL = Sex In Real Life ! You should try it .

If you did try that, go for HFIRL = Having fun in real life.

Try that too? Well , check HHIRL = Having hobby in real life.

If you did try that too , and you still want to play online games with your wife , well .. the case is close ! I can't help you!

Thanks guys, my issue with DF New Dawn is that from the forums it seems like it is still in Beta.  They have moved their release date a couple times, plus with it being in Europe, and me being in NY, I'm not sure if there will be ping issues.  I never played Eve, but heard it is awesome.  I never got into it because I figured it has been out forever, so I missed the boat, and that it would be on the downside of it's life.

Darkfall online is one of a kind in that regards. Unforunately I already played DFO for 5 years and that abomination UW I tried, so I am kinda burned out on it. Wish both teams would pump out content already, ROA and DND.

Albion is like UO, but hear its dead already in beta. Unforunately all the mmorpgs that look good are in pre-alpha still; Crowfall, Chronicals of  Esyia, Camelot unchained. Its a mmorpg slump right now.

I have been playing Eve since Beta. regardless fo what people here say there is no real cut off in Eve between a really old player and a new one. It will take you about 3-6 months to be caught up to a day 1 toon in a straight up fight in a frigate. Which most of us these days fly frigates or cruisers.

Reason is, there is only so many skill points to train and you can really specialize to max out your training and match a toon with over 100 mil SP. eventually all thsoe Skill points are nothing more than capital ships and support skills. so you with 30 mil SP in a specific ship has the same shot at killing a day 1 toon in the same ship. Where is the difference? Knowledge. Knowing that Eve is not a spreadsheet game and understanding the mechanics behind it is key. position yourself in space and the right angles etc to match speed and angle to reduce the chances of a glancing hit etc. These are intricacies most players new to Eve do not understand or are aware of and think its boring because of how you pilot a ship in Eve.

its a challenge, but the real fun is when you find a group to hang out with and become friends with. Even day 1 you can help and be effective. You may die but your sacrifice is what caught the target and made him cry in local about losing his ship. Meanwhile, you get a brand new one free from your corp....

You help catch people and they kill em...eventually you become the killer etc.

I don't think he wants spreadsheet pvp.

The zones are instanced in AoC. I didn't get that open world feeling from it like I did from DF. They also seem boxed in with mountains channeling where you can go, etc. Not sure about BDO.

Have you checked out Mortal Online? I think it might be your type of game
Yes, this is the only thing I can think of that comes close to what OP is talking about. But still, hard to find a replacement for Darkfall.

I live in Seoul, so after the Darkfall NA servers got moved from California (to Texas I think?) the ping became a real problem. It was bad enough from Korea to LA but still not unplayable. If you live in NY, you may want to check the ping on the EU version of DF (get confused between New Dawn and RoA).

I want to try them out but I just know I would get frustrated by the ping.

I wont call it a PvP game - it is OWPvP but its more a sandbox builder

I am not convinced about Pantheon as a PvP game and it isn't out yet... In alpha or beta I think both Camelot unchained and Crowfall seems to have more potential (for PvE I believe in Pantheon though) but sin ce OP specifically mentioned about CU not being out yet I think the whole thing there is moot..

One game far closer to a release I think Lineage: Eternal might work. The Lineage games have always worked fine for PvP, the first Lineage is still me best open word PvP experience (GW for instanced, DaoC for RvR). L:E is sadly just still in Korean but I am sure we get a western version soon.

As for something not unlike Darkfall, maybe Mortal online?

Not an MMO really, but Conan Exiles might scratch your PvP itch:

This make suggesting a whole lot harder to the point of becoming brain-damaging activity.

    Games not mentioned ..... GW1 / GW2 I assume you have tried.

Pirates of the Burning Sea has an interesting take on PvE / PvP1 / PvP2 - you would want to be a Pirate. This may seem obvious but most players are Privateers working for their chosen country. Which is why I put PvP twice. Even the PvE is tied to PvP1.

Crowfall is not out yet either of course.

DAoC? The PvP and PvE were pretty integrated though back when I played. You really had to PvE.

ESO? Not an obvious choice but like DF it has PvP campaigns that reset. Totally self-contained and designed in from day 1. Other than getting out of the solo starter area + a bit if you haven't hit level 10 - you don't have to touch the PvE. (Although a PvP zone with quests to lure PvE players in as well .... not part of the campaigns though)

Beyond that I think the obvious options have been mentioned: B&S, BDO, Lineage, MO, ....

Eve is the absolute worst advice people on here ever give anyone. As a beta tester in 2003(ish), original player and then two separate attempts to go back, I can tell you from first hand experience that it is one of the worst games, still around, to start out in.

There is no skill "cap", the skills can go on seemingly forever and they all operate on offline timers. You will never learn the skills the 1-10 year old accounts have racked up over the time.

Apart from skills, you will always be handicapped and at a huge disadvantage. You will never have the billions of ISK saved up to simply pop out another ship if you blow up. You will never have the hundreds of friends rushing to your side the second you enter low sec space. You won't have the equipment or the same ability to replace it as a veteran player does.

You will be alone. You will experience the vast void of space, first-hand when you start a new game now. No one will be there. No one plays the zones you'll be safe in. The only way to meet people is by travelling to the sectors pirates will gank your newb asses in the second you enter.

Eve is anything but a "newbie friendly" game and this goes as far back as 1 year after it was released. The only thing people on forums like this recruit newbies for is fodder.

It is still sometime until it is out, but Crowfall has entered the testing phase. I for one am stoked for the big world, non instanced pvp
