DVI-D is Digital.  DVI-A is Analog.  DVI-I can be used to supply either a digtal or an analog signal.  VGA is analog.  In that image the only connector that will not work with a digital signal is the last one. The DVI-A cable will NOT work.  -A = Analog, -D = Digital, -I = Analog or Digital.

You do NOT need a separate connector with a power supply.  That is bullshit.

In your first post you mentioned trying a HDMI connection.  So I'm confused, lol.
So am I since that totally bypasses the whole DVI thing.

Yes I did that too but the converter I used is not active it looks like a short pen drive. Like this

Image result for hdmi to vga

This does not work because the HDMI in the card has no analog stream so you need an active converter is what I read.

I tried both the HDMI and the DVI-D converters they both don't work

Oh you mean the monitor doesn't have a direct HDMI input?

I had no idea been using converters for all the monitors in the house. So should use the HDMI then for future reference ?

Looks like for now you can plug it into a television untill you can get it figured out.  The HDMI cable will work when plugged into a television.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Then yes, the only DVI cable that will work is a DVI-D cable.  A DVI-I cable will have four extra male posts that will be incompatible with that connection since it does not have the four female ports needed.

Monitors with either DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort will work with that card.  You can also use a cable that converts between any of those three ports.  This may open up your choices for a new monitor.  Just no VGA.

This incompatibility is not your son's fault.  Any of us could have made the same error since most graphics cards have historically been able to provide an analog signal from these non-VGA ports.  And if you purchased based on recommendations here then that error was made here and definitely not by your son.

Thank you all so I could just get a HDMI to HDMI  cable right one of my older monitors has a HDMI slot. That should work and save my son some cash and I can take his new monitor for my computer and give him my monitor. My Dell S2240L monitor has an HDMI slot. He just bought that monitor for the computer and it was probably budget one so has only VGA slot.

I don't blame him at all and no  one recommended it here he just bought this on his budget. He earned it working as a waiter long hours too poor fellow.

I feel awful that his first foray into this buying things for himself has turned out quite poorly  so trying to help him out a bit and thanks again.

Now don't forget when you upgrade your alienware it will probably have the same problem.

Every one of us has gone through what your son has.  We've all had systems that just would. not. work.  At least until we found out what was wrong.  It comes with the territory.  Let him know that.

Well, at the end of the day, it's likely that the number of F-Bombs dropped was > 0. However, as long as "things thrown" and "things smashed" == 0 then I call it a success!!

    I think this should work:

    https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-Gold-Plated-Active-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00ZMV7RL2/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1483996479&sr=1-4&keywords=hdmi+to+vga

But considering the price of that monitor, it might not be wise to spend any money on adapters to get it work. At least not unless you can find a place that allows you to return the adapter and get refund in case it doesn't work.

Yeah. I can't even remember the last time I saw one with only analog.
