Gender lock here is for a reason that you discover as the story progresses.
I thought that this would be BS hype. NMS kind of hype. After the reviews, I hemmed and hawed and decided not to buy it. But then I did. 12 hours in, I'm engaged. I'm constantly looking around (like Skyrim) for what else they have. Some nice little things are like listening to story tellers in town or the music and just sit there. The one story was a good 5-7 minutes of backstory. Then it looped but still. Drew me right in and I found myself wishing I could hush the people having idle conversations behind me (that didn't seem to loop).
The creatures feel right. Not super predictable but as they get stronger I am noticing their patterns. As I play I've changed weapons for different creatures. I may save some arrows and kill some with a spear while others I decide it's too risky and bow them to death (or tie them down with ropes and beat them senseless).
The one thing I wish I'd have been told is to farm boars/turkey/raccoons much more early on for bags. Their "rares" are needed for 2nd and 3rd tier bags and they're not as plentiful as one might think.

I figured that out pretty quick when I got my pre-order goodies. Bags are made with animal content, same for health potions. For that reason alone I've been hunting the wildlife for quite a bit already and because of that I already have a lot of green and blue materials from them. I figured to keep them and see what I need them for later on (thanks for clarifying it )
Loving the game on pro, poor PC elites really don't get it. If you love gaming then why just own one format and then cry when a great game comes out on another format. This day and age you are doing yourself an injustice by not owning at least one console.
Could not agree more. These days, the PC isn't the only 'master race' anymore and SONY has shown that with the PS4 Pro and Guerrilla with Horizon, while the PC 'evolution' has kinda stalled for the last decade with only the GPU squeezing out more power for games.
If HZD is setting a standard for coming titles on the PS4(Pro), then I really think that the 'PC master race' elitists are in trouble, because more and more companies might develop for consoles (only). After all, consoles is where the (gaming) money is...

Also, Sony is clearly seeing how Microsoft is killing XBO by releasing all their exclusives on PC. Sony is playing it smarter by focusing on hammering its user base with several PS4 exclusive games, increasing sales even more.
Actually, the Xbox has dominated sales lately in consoles. Sony is throwing a lot of money away with these PS4 exclusives. Typical Sony, full of not so bright execs. Literally the dumbest decision ever to not put a HD Blueray drive in their newer consoles is really hurting them.
The thing about Sony exclusives is, that they are all 3rd person adventures. If you like any other genre you are out of luck on PS4. It makes sense, because they looks the best on promos and generate a lot of hype.
But the money they put in to them have to be enormous and they have to be sure its worth it. They even pay devs of other games to NOT be on other systems (especially Xbox, but sometimes even PC).
But honestly as a consumer without PS4, I have to really apprise the XBox play anywhere titles and most importantly XBox x PC cross play. This feature alone makes Gears of War 4 so much better value for me.
I am not sure if this move is worth it for MS. I think a lot of people are bashing MS for this move, because of Sony exclusive like this one. But I see it as VERY brave and pro consumer move, thats worth of praise and I hope it will pay off in the long run.

I have a PS4, but, not getting the game, from what i've seen so far the game itself looks good, but it has the same problem that The Crew and Watchdogs had, the main character that you play, if you don't like them, then the game is pretty much ruined, and that is the problem with Horizon zero dawn, the character you are limited to playing, i detest.

When you add in the fact that 95% of us cannot stream 4k video, if you want to actually see 4k on the beautiful TV you own, you will need such a drive. I'd have like to have had a HD Blu Ray player too but I won't go so far as to call them brain dead. The PS4 still has a 2:1 install base on the XBox this console generation.
Your mount can run shit over. I grabbed a "ram" mount and went loco on boars and turkeys, foxes and rabbits near the "Stadium" (don't want to give it away if you haven't been exploring). He's also useful on Cultists... Run in full speed, dismount, shoot a couple of arrows while he goes full Bronco, and then hop back on and circle around for another charge.
Took out a couple of the flamebreathers, 2 saws, 4 watchers and about 10 cultists in one fight in particular (it may have been my fault I dragged them all together... and it was priceless)
Only bad decision SONY made for the Slim was to remove that digital audio out jack IMO. I know it saves a couple of $ in sales price, but WHY? The console supports Dolby DIgital / DTS and now you have to be creative to loop the sound from HDMI back to your amplifier (would not work on my old TV). Or perhaps SONY did this on purpose to make it a 'selling point' for the Pro (as if the thing didn't have enough selling points already )
Also, as @Grakulen already stated, what's the use to buy a XB1 when the thing actually is a mediocre Windows 10 PC (if even that - my 10 year old CPU performs much better) and you can cross-play all XB1 games on your PC if you have Windows 10 installed on your system..? IMO one of the worst 'marketing' decisions Mickey$oft ever made (other than to fork out an other $10 for selling XB1 games, while they're still normal price on Steam...)

I'm no XB1 hater, though I am a Mickey$oft hater. Reason I've never bought a XBOX is because the games available on them are just not the ones that appeal to me. I'm more a jRPG lover, and for that PlayStation is just a better platform ;-)
It's not about the PC elite race or any such crap I just suck at the playstation controls so I always hesitate having to buy a new console or get another device like Xim to play the game with a mouse and keyboard plus I bet this game depends on fast reflexes another weak aspect for me.
Maybe I am blind, but I cant see any source there? I am asking because I think there are none as MS said they wont release any numbers, so you can keep your fanboy pitchfork in the ass.

Controller hater here. I have to use Keymander to play Destiny so that shows how much I suck at aiming!
I have had zero issues playing HZD so far with a controller. Their are a few perks/skills/whatever you can get early on that slows down time to make aiming easier. Plus the Spear is OP as hell IMHO. I beat the first tutorial Boss-type thing solely by melee, didn't fire one shot (because I screwed up and fell off a rock in front of it O.o ). I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy a time I have had at ranged combat, although I am only a few hours in-game so I expect it to get a little harder.

I'm maybe 18 hours into this game and I'm really impressed. I've never played a console game with combat that is this responsive. Once the controls became second nature, it really opened up combat and I found myself engaging with enemies for the challenge rather than try to sneak around them. The beauty of the game is well reported, even on a regular PS4 (1080p), so I'll skip that analysis. The absence of zoning in the game is remarkable. I've never really had issues with zoning in games but now seeing a game without it, I want all future games to follow suit.
I think they could have done a better job with the level and skill system though. I wish developers would stop this practice and limit a single play through to 25% or so of the available skills. Doing so would foster the desire for additional playthroughs and also make my decisions feel like they actually matter.
Oh, and by the way, I haven't seen any lag/judder yet and I've had no bugs so far, which may be a first for me for games played on day one. It's good to see a developer actually finish the game before it's released for once.

I think one of the reasons why Microsoft is pushing the whole UWP thing for Win10 is because XB1 userbase is not very good compared to the PS4 userbase, whether or not UWP will eventually compensate for the disparity though, is a good question.
For record I have an Xbox 1 and no PSs. (Full disclaimer I have 4-PCs, 3-DS, 2-3DS, Wii and WiiU)

It is quite wtf, but for me they don't feel out of place. Think due to them not going overboard with the machine types and keeping them similar to animals we know of and at some point existed irl. They did a good job with the prehistoric-esk meets futuristic world. Also think this is revealed overtime as the story unravels
