My guesstimate is SQ42 being about 3-4 years away, if all goes well. This is based on how long it takes them to release features in the multiplayer part.
Keep in mind 3.0 was expected last winter. It is delayed by a year, and some of the promised features were pushed back. Not saying it's a scam, a game is clearly being developed, but thinking SQ42 is coming next year is very optimistic.

It's not optimistic, it's stupid and has no evidence to support the claim.
When the Crysis 1 deathmatch network code gets replaced with network code that doesn't force the Star Citizen "persistent universe" multiplayer into a continuous stutter at 1-15 fps, we can start enjoying the content that CIG has created. I'd say that whenever that time comes, the game will be in a playable state.

I think you should hold off on your guesstimate until 3.0 is out of PTU. Then compare features in 2.6 to 3.0.
Remember if the networking stuff they were working on last year had "passed muster" 2.6 would have been released as 3.0. It didn't and more work was needed. Whilst they were doing that though they have been adding other stuff which would have been in last years 3.0.

Whether your estimate will have any basis ....
3.0 could be bug free and released NOW as well as every other mechanic they have in mind (which is definately NOT the case with 3.0 as there's still lots of mechanics missing from 3.0 that they haven't even started working on but anyways, I digress) and an estimate of SQ42 being out by mid next year would still be a really stupid estimate because it takes a lot more than half a year to create CONTENT for a single player game even after all the mechanics are in.
only true fanatics are invited to these tests anyway
After a few weeks with the Evocati testers the Alpha builds are available to ALL backers. For months. Until the next build.
And through the regular Free-Fly-Weekends available to everyone for free for a time.
So your "only true fanatics" are actually ANYONE that wants to test it. Even for free for a limited amount of time. Or for an unlimited amount of time with a basic starter package (in my country its 54 Euro).
3.0 created a lot of space and areas but as a game it looks very empty, feels like they spent so much time and energy to make the tech work that there was no time to fill it with worthwhile things to do.

First they create the framework, THEN they add content.
Which is not so hard with the tools they have shown in Offenbach/Frankfurt.
So we backer playtesters have some missions to test at the moment, some mission givers, a few crashed ships, several ports with shops, moons etc. Enough to find the framework bugs.

I guess that is the downside to having to get something out before the anniversary sale. As that guy said in last week's ATV, this is an MVP for 3.0.

As they said before ... they aim for regular updates. What is finished until then goes into the build. What is not finished they work some more on until it is finished.

You are right, but the focus of 3.0 isn't content. The focus is creating a framework for the future patches. 3.0 is a framework for future patches.
this game has been in APLHA for the last 20 years... just so they can keep from actually commercially launching and keep people ( aka suckers ) funding their development and buying their "modules"...
I buy and play games when they are commercially launched not when they are development.
and the website is so badly constructed that you cant even find out what to download to actually play the fucking thing

Someday someone will explain the concept of crowdfunded games to you.
Games that would not exist without crowdfunding. Therefore you could not play them as they would never be "commercially launched" if not for those "suckers".
Can anyone tell me 1) whether this game is even remotely close to being released and 2) whether it will still be worth playing at all on release if I've not spent any money on the game at all during its development.
Thank you
ad 1) I expect the Solo game in mid 2018 and the beginning of the multiplayer game later in 2018
ad 2) Absolutely worth. Join an org/"guild" and they let you fly whatever you want (large or small, solo or multi-crew) no matter what big or small ship you have at the start. Many orgs have A LOT more ships than members.
If you knew Star Wars Galaxies in the early days, shortly after "Jump to Lightspeed", when it was still a sandbox and not a WoW clone .... SC will be comparable to that. Which is a good thing :-)
Have fun
Really? You people now have a nerve to compare SC to SWG??? Like, really? SWG had a rough launch, but it was a game with all the parts together. Yet all those "free weekends" of SC only show that it's a Crobert's Monster, stiched together from a bunch of tech. demos. Geez.

Funny that THE MAN himself, aka C. Roberts speaks about 3.0 as the next Jesus Patch, not as a "framework". Especially when you remember feature list from 2016 Citizen Con... People have such a short memory.

I played SWG for 8 years. From Day 1 until they switched off the light. And still play the EMU version.
I joined the Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign because i consider it a worthy successor to SWG.
Yes, i DEFINITELY "have the nerve" to compare SC to SWG. Like - REALLY !
And lets compare launch histories after SC has launched, shall we ?
Hmmm interesting, interesting.... Can't wait to hear about more updates about the game. It's like my favorite reality show.
So now the basic frame world of 3.0 is a reality, which is pretty awesome, but if they can't fix the lagg everyone are talking about, then nothing really was accomplished. More so, that the active population and amount of AI in game are really small now, and still its lagging so badly.
And thus, I'll be focusing my attention on whether they manage to optimize the game properly.
We all knew creating such a world can be possible, but the problem is to make it playable, to have strong enough servers to run it, but as time passes, technology does advance, i won't be surprised if they will leave the network code whatever to be one of the last things they do, waiting for technology to catch up with the ambitious game design.
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics. Reply Add Multi-Quote

Leaving network code to be last is not possible because they need to be able to test how their designs work in practice.
@roaland Just do your homework first and you'll be fine. A lot of stuff is in the stages of being released. So read the forums first to understand where the game is currently. A free to fly weekend should be coming up, so you can test it out first.
yup I've been telling myself to hold off till 3.0 for that very reason. If they can take all of 3.0 live and have it sustained, I'd say they have a winner.
Someone may need to correct me on this but I think I read something about 3.0 being scaled back from the original presentation with a lot of things to be added later.

The scale of 3.0 is known for long now, since the production report was posted.
Aside of that, what was demoed in the original presentation is in the current 3.0.

that's the very reason I've been watching 3.0 so closely. If they can pull off 3.0 I think they'll be ok. but even though they've been working on it for a while, it won't really be known until it all gets to the PTU Server for Evocati testing. 3.0 is the bellwether for the rest of the game imho. If they can't get it stable, the game flops if you ask me. just my 2 cents.
He posted this update about a day ago. I like this guy as he does a good summary of the current state of the game. He puts the latest information in one video.
