If anything it's now working a lot more like real sports with all of its pay to win.
That makes no sense to me. What's happening in some sports is athletes and teams are paying big sums of money to prepare themselves or their players in the best possible way. That happens in games as well and noone is complaining about it.
The key to fair sports is once you stand on the starting line or on the pitch, the conditions and rules are the same for all the players or all the teams. Paying money to change the conditions or rules in your favour would never be accepted in sports but for some reason it seems to be accepted by some people playing certain video games.
