The long answer: depends on why you left in the first place.
If you were ticked off by the complete lack of quality, forget it. It's worse. If it was content, welcome back.
I'd like to recount a story.
Once upon a time, I had a Master Ranger/Master Creature Handler. Among other problems, I needed money and it wasn't easy to come by with this profession combo. Could always sell camo kits, but like everyone else it ends up you have to be a miner in some form or another. So, resources it is.
One dark and stormy morning, I determined to check my harvestors and I came upon two aggressive Sith. I set my pets on the first one, a level 77 blue. After a few seconds, the target vanished into thin air.
So, I tracked down the other, a level 75 green. I set my pets to attack, but they just stood there in combat mode and did nothing. So, my lame pistol skills were required to take down the target. After several minutes of fighting, I finally bagged it, but I was wondering why I was only taking 10 damage a pop. I had faced this thing before and found them to be an excellent challenge, but that day it was doing hardly any damage at all.
Anyway, I decide to finish my run to my house, and on the way I noticed...my pets were in combat. So, I swung around, and found that they were not attacking anything, they were just in combat mode for no apparent reason. So, I stored them. Nope, they wouldn't store.
So, I ordered them to attack something. 'a' I said, 'a', and the second time I started...spinning in a circle. Slowly at first, then faster, and faster...and faster and faster. At this point I'm thinking WUTTT TEHHH EFFFFF!
Anyway, I take that target out finally, get to my harvesters and my house, and there is a bug nest inside my house fouling up the works. Couldn't pull with the pets or anything they were still in combat with their shadows and wouldn't store.
Finally I said, screw it I'm checking my sales and heading off planet. So, I got on my bike and started heading toward Theed. Unfortunately, the lag was so so bad that I kept rubberbanding over and over to the same location. I couldn't get into Theed, it was like a deja vu all over again! About 5 minutes of that and I finally got into the city. I went over to the bazaar to check my sales and I find...
I had sold no less than 8 items. Unfortunately, my email only reported 1 item sold. What happened to the rest of my money? What happened to my items? Is this game THAT BAD that I am actually losing my money and my inventory to stupid bugs like THAT?
I checked, and yes I had lost roughly 100k in items that were on the Bazaar that were sold, but it never updated my money nor did I get an email.
Meanwhile, my pets are still in combat over near my house, so it was time to head off planet. I headed off to Yavin, I had 2 harvestors there. They are both running, but there was no resource to collect at that site now so they were just expending money and power for nothing (and I confirmed that one). I collected the resources, reset them and started them back up, went back to the outpost and by the time I got there...I was so worn down by the stupid bugs and issues that I felt compelled to...
come here and complain about it.
That's right. That wasn't a story from Beta, that was 5:30 this morning. ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS PERFORM MY STANDARD MAINTENENCE AND LEAVE!
And what I got was a laggy and buggy experience beyond what I recall from Beta.
There are a number of reasons why this game has great potential now. There are even more reasons why that potential will never be realized, and quality assurance is A-NUMBAH-WON on that list :P

Those Experiances, and a complete disreguard for the actual storyline of Star Wars, as well as other gameplay issues is the reason I cancelled my accounts after 2 years.
When I say gameplay issues, I don't mean, the lag, I mean If I have a crafter, and due to the "new" leveling system, I need to check my harvesters, I have to have a combat skill, or I need a bunch of friends, with large creatures just to go out and check them.
I'm not a big fan of forced group play. Especially when I get online and no one else in my guild is there. And that happens alot with every game I've ever played. It is my firm belief that MMORPG's as a whole, who attempt to force group play, are not grasping most players desires. I always felt gameplay with other players should be optional. Especially when they put things into the game, such as crafters. Let's face it, how many games have you ever played, has group crafting???
Originally posted by shugoo i think swg has lost its lust after a whial is it worth buying the total exspirienc?
Ummm.... yeah.
Despite the fact that the game is appallingly broken in places and alarmingly bent where it's not broken, despite the worst customer service in all of MMORPGdom, and despite the army of whiney "I wanna be a jedi" losers, SWG is kinda... well... the best sci-fi genre MMORPG on the market at this time.
/sigh
Yes, I know that's pathetic, but if you have to play an MMORPG right now, it really is the one you need to try. And this is from someone who thinks the CU sucks big roosters compared to the classic game.
Although i despised the new planet ( i hate follow the yellow brick road content) , the one good thing total experaince package got me was a barc which of course promptly sold
Find a busy server Ahazi bria, chillestera, create go see what post cu is about
On origanal server go to lok/ or mining and watch as folks form groups wait for groups, gripe about groups
Depending on when you left content has been added, revised, improved
New planet brings actual useable equipment with quest rewards, if you stayed for a while enjoyed untill a certain point, it most certainly is worth it to take a peek at it again and see what has changed
Please take Wepps posts with a grain of salt, I think the SWG developers ran over his dog or something so he has a personal grudge.
He gets all the bugs that none of the people I know have ever seen (I've been a crafter since day one and they only time I've ever lost anything off a vendor was though an exploit people were using, and when I forgot to get it out of storage in time).
Then there is the fact that he must not read the Launch Pad. If he did he'd know when he gets locked in combat mode all he'd have to do is hit escape.
Yes the game does lag, but this can be highly exagerated when you have a personal vendetta against a game.
ok they may have more players .. but shees .. look at the game .. it doesn't offer that much to keep grownups interested .. get's boring fast .. and quite repetitive.. and rather ugly .. and when do you see any of those 3.5 mill players --> not much .. the highest groupage of players at the same times doesn't even get near the ones star wars galaxies has .. so the player interaction is much better in swg !
I recently cancelled my subscription for the third time (3 days ago).
I'm one of those people that pays the 15 bucks to log back in and see how things have changed after the major expansions.
Why do I keep cancelling?
Han Solo is cooler than Luke Skywalker.
Because this game is geared toward Jedi (which there should be few of) and not as focused on progression for the other major professions.
There are a LOT of jedi in the game, but going jedi is the only way to keep playing this game with progression in mind. I don't want to be a jedi. I wanted to be a smuggler. There aren't supposed to be any jedi at this time, but there should be plenty of smugglers.
I'm also one of those people that can play this game for a month and see just about everything there is and have enough. I'm a lvl 80 and now I realize that the major way to keep progressing is to grind out Jedi. Jedi are supposed to be running around either solo or with one other Jedi- their mentor. I had no idea there were so many Jedi until after the "Combat Upgrade". Now Jedi are forced to get into groups of 8 people and kill large green cows (bols) just to get their experience points.
I cannot explain how frustrating it is to battle a large green cow that can incapacitate me or kill me; while if I kill it I only get 1 (one) experience point!! Seriously, that's dumb.
Even though MMORPGs are multiplayer by design, forcing people to be almost completely dependent on others is ridiculous. There are a lot of people that like to experience the game on their own (aka soloing) and then once they feel social they can hang out with people in cantinas, etc. That practice is extremely hard now. There are very few creatures out there that you can kill that give the amount of experience needed to make progression feasible on your own.
If they just had things like persistent Jedi mission terminals, they could get around this.
Yes this game is laggy, but if you try turning off shadows in your ingame graphics selection the game is twice as fast. Graphics lag was always a problem for me, and rubberbanding was occasional. Cities with lots of other players are downright horrible. If EVE online can get 10k people on one server and have apparently no lag whatsoever, why can't SWG?
Oh, and lots of lag and bugs, bugs, bugs. If only they had mission terminals for Carniverous Bugs and Seething Lags!
But if you're reading this you probably knew all of the above already.

Speaking of personal vendettas...
Why is it that every time I make a post that is critical of the lousy game design and quality assurance, you seem to take it personally? Did I pee in your SWG holy water today? Maybe you are just the extra developer assigned to external forums to make sure people aren't saying too many negative things out here either.
Seems to me like the last is likely, because I have never met anybody else in my life stupid enough to blindly support a completely broken product except those that work for the company in question. I know they are there, but it just boggles the mind that they could possibly string sentences together.
You obviously don't have a Creature Handler, or else you would have known that the escape key does nothing to pet combat, only yours. You obviously didn't read the post, because I didn't say 'vendor'. The items were on bazaar, and this isn't the first time recently. Neither is it the first time you didn't bother to read somebody's post before responding with lectures about how we should all just bow to SOE greatness upon entering this zone.
As to the lag, it has been getting consistently worse with each passing patch since CU. Everybody I know in the game seems to want to comment on how bad it has been just last night and today...except you, who thinks everyone else is exaggerating.

i came back to SWG to test out the new changes and revive my old character "jessian Kaaneo" on the Eclipse server.
i took a year out, after getting banned Complaining about the amount of jedi in game, and the disregard of the ACUTAL storyline George lucas invented.
the game at the start had, pokemon battles. AT_ST walker battles and the dreaded holocron craze in 2002
so anyway, the last 2 weeks i spent time online, grinding my pilot. My master bounty hunter was revived after my clone legs were removed and i preceded out of the wilderness in Naboo where i left him.
im not going to bore you lot with long post. the CU is a sheer mess, its like a major project given to inempt programmers that havent a clue how to program. The only way you can win in pve. is fight your own level, one at a time or get a group of 80s to help. pathetic. i want a game, where i can go grind on my own, when i have the time and not be forced into groups with, you guessed it. JeDI wanna bes. this game is KOTOR online now.
Saturday night i logged in to find 30 padawans that just got it over the course of the day. its too easy to gain xp in groups grind for months solid and bingo join the jedi club.!!!!
Now heres the thing that pisses me off.
Yoda dying in his hut turns to Luke skywalker at the end of ESB, "luke, the last of the jedi you will be..."
In SWG the timeline is gone, non existant.
i will not be renewing my subscription come October when this cancelled account dies. and my whole experince of playing Stars wars mmorg has been damaged for good.
If you like me love star wars, and all it stands for, please this game is not SW.
Like I've said before, it's not a vendetta, tell the truth and I'm fine with it. making stuff up to support you baseless claims is not the way to get me off your back.
Why is it that every time I make a post that is critical of the lousy game design and quality assurance, you seem to take it personally? Did I pee in your SWG holy water today? Yes that's me I'm a dev, you're brilliant you've caught me.
Seems to me like the last is likely, because I have never met anybody else in my life stupid enough to blindly support a completely broken product except those that work for the company in question. I know they are there, but it just boggles the mind that they could possibly string sentences together.
And I can't beleive there is anyone stupid enough to keep paying for a game when they hate every aspect of it. When they hate it so much they feel they have to make things up to keep people from playing it.
You obviously don't have a Creature Handler, or else you would have known that the escape key does nothing to pet combat, only yours. Actually I do have a CH, but I haven't had that locking combat mode for quite awhile now. It just keeps happening to you. And I've also been using the Bazzar since day one, and NEVER had anything disappear. Again one of those very rare bugs that of course happen to you.
As to the lag, it has been getting consistently worse with each passing patch since CU. Everybody I know in the game seems to want to comment on how bad it has been just last night and today...except you, who thinks everyone else is exaggerating.
Ohh, so it was bad for two nights. and speaking of not reading posts: I said "could be exaggerated". Oh and while on were on the subject of not reading, care to respond to the 10 or so other threads where I've proven you have no idea what you're talking about? Oh wait you can't you had those deleted.
Wepps I think you're a sheep. You think it's "cool" to bash a game so you do it mindlessly because it's the "in thing". I would have some sort of respect for you if you actually could defend anything you say, but you can't and you don't. You simply ignore it or have it deleted.
You don't like the game? Great STOP PLAYING IT DUMB@$$.
I think the question is can you stand the game as is w/o the expansion? If you enjoy the game as it is currently "working as intended", then by all means, buy the expansion. But dont take my word for it, I cancelled and uninstalled this cruel joke of a game about 1 week after the CU hit. I still talk to my guildies and some of them actually re-upped despite my warnings. I guess it couldn't be all that bad.
But they wont fool me again! Up yours Darth Smedley!
See Wepps, I'm not all over Wakizash and he posts negaitive stuff. The difference is, his just posting his opinion, he's not making a bunch of crap up to make his opionion seem more valid.
After having played since beta 3 up until just after the CU, and having seen everything up to (but not including RoTW), and having spoken to many, many friends who still play it (though most are scaling back owing to boredom or are cancelling their subs), I can only say that there are better crafted and managed games out there to spend your money on.
Even though the fans don't like to hear it, SWG is a dying game and barely rates a mention by even the SOE marketing folks these days. Check the listings on any MMO based site or mag and SWG is like some half forgotten red-headed step-child. It's really become everything that they (the devs) said they didn't want it to become and is pretty much all about being a Jedi and nothing else.
Space is boring after a while (heck mining in Eve is more interesting that the carebear fluff they call combat in SWG), the new "content" is mostly just a rehash of the old content but with pathing added, and everything else is geared towards Jedi. They are progressively taking everything out of the game that gave its uniqueness (battle fatigue anyone?) and replacing it with cookie-cutter based stuff, reducing the game to a bland same-ole, same-ole clone of EQ but with a Star Wars skin.
As they said in the movies "nothing to see here, move along, move along"
Originally posted by Stuman I can only say that there are better crafted and managed games out there to spend your money on. --> True. However, many people are interested in living in the Star Wars universe and not a generic fantasy world. Even though the fans don't like to hear it, SWG is a dying game --> Please define dying. "Dying" in a MMORPG usually means a radical drop in subscriber numbers (not the case), downtime extending over days and servers being unstable (not the case), the dev team falling apart (not the case), sales of new boxes minimal (not the case). These are facts. That MMORPGs need bug-fixing is not an indication for dying but its the norm. So please define dying. If you have FACTS and not only opinions, that would be appreciated too. and barely rates a mention by even the SOE marketing folks these days. --> You have NOT seen the ad campaign in US TV I assume ? Check the listings on any MMO based site or mag and SWG is like some half forgotten red-headed step-child. --> Untrue as I have pointed out in a previous post that has links to about 7 reviews from different sources, with ratings from 4.7 to 9.4 .... which shows that the press is as much divided over SWG as the players are. The average is in the high 7 (which is the case for most MMORPGs with the exception of WoW). Again these are facts you can verify. It's really become everything that they (the devs) said they didn't want it to become and is pretty much all about being a Jedi and nothing else. Space is boring after a while (heck mining in Eve --> NOTHING is more boring than mining in 1.0 space in EVE. NOTHING ! You can get rich from it, but your IQ will rival a pot plant after a while. is more interesting that the carebear fluff they call combat in SWG), the new "content" is mostly just a rehash of the old content but with pathing added, and everything else is geared towards Jedi. --> I disagree with that assement. Read the Test Center notes with the new pet rules for instance (you can now learn abilities from pets and then train them to other pets .... nice steal from WoW IMHO but if it makes the creature handler profession more interesting in SWG I am all for it). They are progressively taking everything out of the game that gave its uniqueness (battle fatigue anyone?) --> LOL. What uniqueness has been added to SWG by battle fatigue ? Players STILL visit the entertainers for their buffs - you dont need BF for that. and replacing it with cookie-cutter based stuff, reducing the game to a bland same-ole, same-ole clone of EQ but with a Star Wars skin. ---> An example ... I have watched Warhammer Tabletop evolve through multiple editions. Although I had to /puke over "thumbing down" of the rules over the years to "make the game attractive for the average 12 year old" I had to confess after a while that newer, more streamline editions ARE more fun to play - faster, more dynamic, less bookkeeping. If I want monster complexity I could play Avalon Hill games or Advanced Squad Leader. Its the same with SWG. Yes, they may have started with some innovative ideas. Those did not work well. They have changed it now. IMHO its more fun now. More complex is not necessarily better (best example --> WoW). --> Have fun, Erillion As they said in the movies "nothing to see here, move along, move along"
Originally posted by Erillion Originally posted by Stuman I can only say that there are better crafted and managed games out there to spend your money on. --> True. However, many people are interested in living in the Star Wars universe and not a generic fantasy world. Even though the fans don't like to hear it, SWG is a dying game --> SWG is a dying game, way back in 2003 Eclipse was a Heavy populated server. i went back there to find 60% of the population PRE CU left. the new players in game didnt know the game from 2003. Why dont you create a character and find one server HEAVY!
and barely rates a mention by even the SOE marketing folks these days. -->I have NOT seen the ad campaign in UK TV, does Europe not apply? Check the listings on any MMO based site or mag and SWG is like some half forgotten red-headed step-child. --> 9.4 What magazine gave this game 9.4 and heres the thing. the magazine got PAID by SOE to give it 9.4 that is how reviews work! It's really become everything that they (the devs) said they didn't want it to become and is pretty much all about being a Jedi and nothing else. Space is boring after a while (heck mining in Eve -->You didnt answer his question, SOE have hands tied behind their backs, this is due to the fact, if lucasarts wanted to remove the jedi from the game with permadeath [which SHOULD be implemented from start] then 80% of the population would quit. No jedi, no kiddies. is more interesting that the carebear fluff they call combat in SWG), the new "content" is mostly just a rehash of the old content but with pathing added, and everything else is geared towards Jedi. --> I agree with that assement. dont bother reading the Test Center notes just go out there and look at the amount of jedi involved in high level groups within your own server. This is supposed to be based after ANH and ESB, yet we have 100000000s of jedi running around, worse still we have imperial jedi [] and rebel jedi, HOW unoriginal can SOE really be. JEDI are in hiding, not out in Imperial bestine killing worts. They are progressively taking everything out of the game that gave its uniqueness (battle fatigue anyone?) --> Battle fatigue was in game as content for the entertainers and dances to deal with, now you dont need to visit them, WHY? The only qoute that is needed to explain the anomosity between die hard fans of Star wars and SOE is simple, straight forward and shows the pure significance of Luke Skywalker. "LAST of the jedi you will be..." Yoda croaks...
How many Wookiees (or Rodians, or Tweliks or Zebraks or Bothans or Mon Cals) did you see in the Imperal army in the movies or books? How many Wookiees did you see chilling out with Tradosshens in Cantinas in the books?
All of these things go "against continuity" yet the only thing you have a problem with is jedi? Why is that?

quite simple. The EMPEROR would have killed the vast majority of them, Darth Vader himself took it upon himself to remove the jedi.
yet, we see thousands of openly active imperial and rebel jedi fighting in the streets of theed, bestine, coronet and dantooine.
but im afraid, this KOTOR wars will come to an end.
I don't really care about alien races being imps. That doesn't impact my gameplay. 1000's of Jedi running around swatting lightsabers at anyone in range DOES impact game play.
Why? 1) Jedi are unbalanced in PVE and PVP thus causing massive balance issues in both aresa. 2) Jedi are unbalanced in PVE which causes "High end" content to be much more difficult than it needs to be so that it's still difficult when you have Jedi in the group.
Basically it boils down to this: Aliens in the Imperial military, while annoying, doesn't affect my gameplay. Jedi by the dozen does.
Get rid of the gameplay issue by either making Jedi no better than any other profession and removing xp penalties for jedi or remove Jedi altogether.
Once we deal with THAT issue THEN I'll worry about Wookie Colonels in the Imperial Army.

Everything matters, when you are building a game based upon a SAGA that has (at the time of development) been in existence for 26 years.
A lot of people complain because games are generally made by businessmen these days, and they don't really provide the kind of gaming content a player is looking for...."Games made by gamers" is the phrase of the day.
Well, in Galaxies, the game should have been designed by sticklers for details concerning the existing SAGA of Star Wars. THIS one issue is the one that drove many away from the game initially. It JUST - WASNT - STAR WARS.
When you discuss how 'aliens in the Imperial Military' don't effect your game play, well this one product compared to all the others in MMO history is THE ONE that should have had that kind of detail, especially in those things which are obvious to the fan-base and therefore potential player-base.
It doesn't bother you. And that's fine! I'm positive it doesn't bother the vast majority of people yet playing the game. But there are significantly more people that would have liked to have seen ACTUAL CONTINUITY with the saga, and therefore this lack of detail which is a quality assurance problem caused many to leave pretty early on.
You make an Anarchy Online, you are free to do just about anything.
You make a Star Wars, and you pretty much are limited to the existing saga. The fans expected it.

that being said, MMO's can't truly stick to cannon. not without forcing players to do certain things. SWG was built around choice, there is a lot of freedom in the game and that is both it's strength and weakness.
it's a total player run economy, so it's impossible for goods and services to avoid being inflated. it's a game where any player picking any race can be any profression in any faction, so it's hard to stick to the "Aliens not allowed in the Empire" thing without placing massive restrictions on the choices available. Sure other games do it, and that's part of their mechanics. SWG is about choice, and with hundreds of thousands of players with the freedom to choose, you're just going to get things way out of line with what the original saga made available. maybe SWG should have been built a lot more linearly (is that a word?), maybe more rules and limits should have been put in place, it doesn't matter. The genie is out of the bottle so to speak and the ability to choose can not be revoked at this point.

Ummm....

The game is a ok but that can change with the next patch or expansion or even better upgrade /cough.
Oh you have to act like a Sunday school student on their forums or you will be prema game banned.
Oh btw WoW has over 3.5 million users and SWG 300k if that, so its fair to say the WoW is 10 times better then SWG based on happy customers.

ok they may have more players .. but shees .. look at the game .. it doesn't offer that much to keep grownups interested .. get's boring fast .. and quite repetitive.. and rather ugly .. and when do you see any of those 3.5 mill players --> not much .. the highest groupage of players at the same times doesn't even get near the ones star wars galaxies has .. so the player interaction is much better in swg !
My name is...

Well, the total experience is more.
More bugs.
More mind numbinly boring quest.
More Jedi.
More money for a monthly subscription than any other game on the market.
And finally, more junk released by SOE, in the never ending stream of crap that is SWG.
There are plenty of other games on the market that would be money money better spent, than SWG.
I'd have to say it is definitely NOT worth buying it.
In this case, more is LESS.
Yes, it's worth it in my opinion.

We have another one.
Jessian,
How many Wookiees (or Rodians, or Tweliks or Zebraks or Bothans or Mon Cals) did you see in the Imperal army in the movies or books?
Basically it boils down to this:
Aliens in the Imperial military, while annoying, doesn't affect my gameplay.

The fans expected it.

i actually agree 100% with Wepps.
that being said, MMO's can't truly stick to cannon. not without forcing players to do certain things.
