If this gets over to developers and some posters on here that more modern is not always better  its a good thing. :)

I think FFXIV being probably the most consistently populated MMO since WoW proves that just fine. That game is far more old school than Rift's ultra fast leveling where most everything along the way is easily 'earned'.

Rift, when it launched, had a massive start but terrible retention and its player base fell off a cliff. I'm skeptical that the same wont happen here, but we'll see.

    I found the soul vendor.

    Pff the one I want.

How long would it take to get 2000 of that currency?  Is it something that can be accomplished quickly.  Or is it something you have to grind at cap?  I have no interest in playing ranged mage, so if I have to play one to cap to play my spec of choice, I suppose i'll pass for now.
2000 wouldn't take long. I've only closed a few rifts and have over 300 at level 14. Obviously as you get higher level you earn more too. At a guess by mid 20s.
That actually seems more reasonable than I originally thought.  I might give it a shot now, but atm playing FF15 and really don't have the time.  Hoping that this server doesn't disappear before I get a chance to play it.

I wonder more about getting the 50k needen for Frost.  That's a lot.

I'm looking to play a Riftblade, @Dragnelus where is that vendor?

I feel bad for you and anyone else that wants the souls that are really expensive.  I honestly assumed harbinger would of been the most expensive, or at least one of the most expensive.  I'll probably check the game out some@MrMelGibson

Thank you everyone who took the time to answer my questions.  Much appreciated

Hmmm, this is tempting but I have been reading on the Rift forums that they have nerfed xp gains on Prime, and that xp from closing Rifts is particularly bad. Someone said they ran out of quests for their level and had to grind mobs for two hours to get from lvl 12 to 14 (when the next quest chain was available).

Personally, I enjoyed playing Rift back in the day mainly by doing Rifts, invasions, and warfronts and keeping away from quests and grinding mobs as much as possible.

How are you guys finding it? Is it leveling too slow or are people just blowing it out of proportion?
Wait, they actually slowed down exp gain from how it was a launch?  Maybe they are learning.

There have been a few annoyances as well. I mean it's not like the game magically dropped its annoyances after 7 years. Most of the problems seem to be around zone crowding. I've not been credited for event participation and boss kills and have had some CTDs when tons of people are on the screen.

The game overall has been a bit crashy. I deleted all my mods to see if that helps. The good thing is the game offers to send a bug report and restart. Do this. It will auto log you back on and in the middle of what you were doing. I've actually had CTDs in the middle of combat and come back still alive and won the battle. I have the game installed on an SSD so that helps a lot.
Same for my (admittedly limited) time playing.  Had a few times where I crashed loading in, a few DCs in crowded areas, but not a whole lot of what I would consider classic "bugs" as in a mob that's unresponsive, glitching, etc.  All in all, about what you would expect from a new server rush.

I dunno how much time I can dedicate, so I may not be able to really dig in for a while, which is why I'm still anxious about an impending sunset date.  However, I didn't get a chance to experience Rift's original launch, so I wanted to see what it was like running around with full zones reference Rifts and invasions.

Pretty cool, save for the inevitable downside to a Zerg: mobs dying almost instantly when they spawn.

XP gains has been adjusted (upped), to fix this issue... Well, from a massively post I read while researching, I am not (yet?) playing so this is second hand knowledge.

Dev has just boosted XP for invasions, rifts, footholds, collosi and zone events. Enjoy!

When you're level 50+ 50K isn't a lot of planarite. Those 50k souls are expansion souls so they're not intended to be purchased early without a bit of pain.

I'm level 16 and have about 300 planarite, but I've also made a few purchases. Harbinger is on my todo list so I'm being frugal. Grinding rifts and zone events is really easy. Even from 1 - 20 there is a zone even almost always going on.

It's not planarite you're really grinding though. That will just come and pretty quick. It's the void stones and IRCs (individual reward charges) you want. IRCs are needed in dungeons for boss chests. Void Stones buy the really cool stuff. Planarite is a fodder currency  like plat.

For XP and levels. It's easy to hit a wall around 13 - 16 where you've done all the quests and it looks like an XP wasteland out there. This is what you do for that:
    • Dailies: These are something I avoid in most games to prevent overleveling, but are great extra xp here. They're mostly kill X and harvest/craft x quests. In each zone there is someone who will give you dailies for killing planar creatures and closing planar events (Rifts, Invasions, etc). The crafting vendors have dailies which also provide marks to purchase better recipes.
    • Planar Events: These are Rifts, Invasions, Footholds, and Zone Events. These give a few planarite per event. Rifts and Zone events give much better xp and rewards.
    • Dungeons: Run dungeons for extra xp and rewards.
If you get in a raid train for a zone event you can just follow the zerg from rift to rift and then to the boss. Having a mount for this is pretty handy.
The exp wall that people keep referencing does not exist at all ... If you que for the BGs .. Great XP and gear rewards push you right thru  the lvls..

Exp wall people thinking they are running in to is a good thing. Makes people go out in the world do other things thats the good part. The bad part so many lazy people out there wants a easy way to get to 50.

How are the dungeon and Warfronts? Are they popping quickly or do you have to wait for ages? Do you get into dungeons quickly as healer/tank like in most other mmos?

For tank and support fast! Like within 30 secs and in EU prime times.  I have no idea for dps. I tanked the third dungeon without knowing tacts etc :open_mouth: but one in the party knew tacts, so he explained I first died on the wolf boss but he told me to move it slow out of the light in melee range. (rogue tank is really awesome)

I think factions don't matter at all. (I am defiant) PvE you can group up, in pvp you get grouped up together, sometimes i am in the guardian team.

yah I started back on Rift today but I just started on f2p for now to see if I would enjoy it, and I am having fun.  Going to sub tomorrow for a month and see how it goes

is there any reason to get the special 30$ sub vs the 15?

You get a mount, a cosmetic cloak and a title. If you think you'll play for more than a month it makes sense to get it for the mount.

I don't like the mount nor the gear. So I can get 3 months sub for less than 30 euro. (from third party 30 days cost 8,99)

If new players want to try it out then they can without any cost on the ftp server.
If you played this game then got fed up with it, what's the attraction of starting again rather than picking up your previous characters?

The live game is pretty dead, you won't have people levelling up with you to do dungeons, pvp, etc, and the cash shop / minions crap is pretty pay to win. Also the current end game doesn't compare to how it was before all this.
