Three Indicted on Federal Charges in Call of Duty Swatting Death - MMORPG.com News

Federal prosecutors have announced that three men are facing criminal charges in the swatting death of 28-year-old Andrew Finch in Kansas. Tyler Barriss, the suspect accused of making the call to local police that led to Finch's death, has been awaiting trial in Kansas for involuntary manslaughter. However, federal prosecutors building their case have also indicted 18-year-old Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill, 19, for their parts in the Call of Duty swatting incident in December 2017.

I am from Malaysia. We have the death penalty for trafficking drugs and we just overthrew our corrupt government without any violence by using the ballot box. Guns are basically never held by citizens and well our police...let me just say we do not disrespect them. Immigrants we leave them to die in their boats as they will be shot if they try to land. So in the light of that where I come from swatting would have been handled with those shits losing their life probably. It's death penalty for most crimes involving death including kidnapping. Child rapist are put to death.

This wasn't the death of a Nerd, but an innocent father, who leaves behind a devastated family!

The intended Swatting target used to live on that address, but no longer lived there. Read the darn article.
This could have just easily been you or someone else innocent.

This prick deserves to be put away for life!

PS. I fully agree that police brutality in the US has become pretty scary. It's completely crazy that some lunatic can just call the police and get someone executed this easily. Why hire a professional hitman, when you can just call the police and let them do it for you! Crazy shit. Worse, that this police officer again just gets away with it.

Those are not my feelings about immigrants I'm just telling you what the laws are in our country and how they treat certain issues. My feelings don't come into it except the child rapist they deserve to die.

The government talks about Indonesians the way Trump talks about Mexicans. I used to live in a southern state so they used to shot the boats if they came near so these people don't land (unwritten and not publicised policy). Asian countries don't have the luxury of looking humanitarian because of the fragile political situation in our region.

 Our country is a huge melting pot of different races and religions and they are very scared of upsetting the balance. The poor Rohingya there were left in camps ignored and later they found mass graves of the people who trafficked them killing them.

I am just telling you how it is. I suppose the way I wrote that was heartless but that is how it is.

For all of the people demanding the cop get punished I would suggest you actually look into the story. The officers were told that a man had killed his father and had his brother and mother pinned in an area of the house planning to kill them as well. On arrival the officers demanded the man come outside and when he did it was not immediately apparent he was unarmed. He complied with the officers who told him to raise his hands, but then he suddenly dropped his hands to his waist-line and the officer believed he was reaching for the gun he supposedly used to kill his father with.

The officer had every reason, with the information he had at that moment, to believe that he posed a real threat to the officers on the scene and those still in the house so he took the shot. In his line of work these scenarios very often end with cops and bystanders getting killed when an officer hesitates.

It's sad, it's unfortunate, and the family this poor guy left behind deserves justice for what happened but that is no excuse to punish an innocent man who did his job with the information he was given.

Well I'll only say that in my country such an incident could never happen, because no one is allowed to shoot willy-nilly. The information they were given? Seriously? They call out someone who has supposedly killed his father and is holding 2 more as hostage would follow their instructions and would 1.go out, 2.not yell and they would think he is threatening? Also how come there are so many police officers there and they are showing literally the shittiest quality footage with a crappy angle? Also why are they showing just this and not the whole video. There is so many shady things in this that I'm surprised that people aren't catching on that the police officer fucked up. I'm not saying that on the drive there he was thinking "I'm gonna shoot someone", but I'm saying that he either failed in his training or the training they get is just horrible. Either way the police officer fucked up.

I will agree If, and only If the person shot really did lower his hands to his waistline as is being reported.

Even so I do feel too often our police react to fear a bit too early, especially in situations such as this and more training is required.

I've taught my children to always listen very carefully to a policeman if ever in a "guns drawn" situation and do exactly what they tell them to do.

No talk back, no arguing, no movement outside of what is instructed.

A sad situation for everyone involved and they do need to make a very public example of the defendents.

It's an extremely difficult situation. I hope both parties can find peace with it. I hope the CoD kids capitalize on what they've learnt, who knows maybe they'll save a life one day. As for the father's legacy, damn. Fucked up. I am pretty sure they don't wish to ruin 2 persons lives though. So stop picking sides you bored numbnuts.

They are what 18,19 you're telling me these two were not aware of what lethal force they were unleashing. Of course they knew perfectly well that someone might possibly die or get seriously injured which was exactly why they employed a serial swatter ( That fellow gets life even that is too good ). They knew what they were doing and should now face the consequences of their actions.

In all my life I can safely say I have never done anything as a prank that might result in the death of a human being.

After news reports of Finch's shooting surfaced, Gaskill sent Barriss messages on Twitter that said:

"Need to delete everything"

"This is a murder case now"

"Casey deleted everything"

"You need 2 as well"

A forensic examination of Viner's cellphone turned up messages where Viner told another person that he'd threatened Gaskill with a swatting before Finch's shooting, according to the indictment.

Some outgoing messages sent from Viner to an unknown person on Dec. 29 were deleted, according to the indictment.

One of the deleted messages said "I was involved in someone's death."

Another said that Viner told Gaskill "you're getting swatted ... I then gave the guy his address."

Whereas I think you lack empathy for the victim. He can't make peace with it any more, he can't do anything ever again because of criminal actions of others.

We can't even begin to repair the damage that has happened. All that's left is to decide the consequences, and hopefully find a way to prevent the same from happening again.

I won't argue about right and wrong, but I'll say this. I'm a lot older than those 18, 19 year old kids and I do stupid shit that in hindsight I realize that it was really, really stupid.
Also I highly doubt they ever imagined that someone could possibly get hurt.

Nowadays nevermind 18,19 even 28, 29 is too young. People simply mature slower because of the environment in which we are being "raised" in these modern times.
For me for example the difference between a 15 year old and a 25 year old kid is almost negligible. True as a 25 year you might have "responsibilities", but in most cases their way of life doesn't differ as much as someone who is nearing his 40's.

Making headline news and giving a decade or two in jail to someone responsible is a great way to get people to realize.

One of the most important aspects of punishing criminals is that the knowledge of punishment will deter future criminals, and right now this case is likely very effectively preventing future swattings. Whether right or wrong, it's effective.



Though personally I think that maybe Gaskill should be excluded from the charges. Those charges should be aimed at the person who committed the swatting, and the person who requested swatting, not at Gaskill for talking trash on internet.

You call people "snails", "bored numbnuts" and then you say they do not have enough "empathy", I assume you cannot see the irony there? It seems in your world empathy is a reason to presume no one is wrong, no one deserves a prison sentence?

Later you mention that we have all done something some thing cruel or dumb when we were kids, for me dumb yes, cruel no. Nothing which might have cost someone their life, and I would wager for the baulk of the population that is the case.

I doubt they will get the full sentence anyway, the fact they are still in there teens will no doubt be taken into consideration. I really can't see were you are coming from on this.
