Yeah Thid was awesome.  Characters were high enough to start getting class defining skills but still easy to level to that range.  Many fond memories of Thid.

It's worth mentionning that DAoC was game #14 for the studio + most of previous games were multiplayer PvP (even though tabletop) iirc. And many modern games are created as first or second game for their studios thus have unrefined gameplay and questionable game design which wasn't tested in 5-10 games previously.

As mentioned by some posters they made some poor decisions down the line, but MMOs were so new then, no wonder they made mistakes.

It never went F2P back in the day, part of the reason it was so good. But I think you can play it now for free. Graphics will be a shock to you though.

Wanted to like it--really did. But strafing disabling your auto attack was a deal breaker.

I agree with this- especially "you had a choice" this is exactly what the "pure pvp" mmorpgs don't get, one cannot do without the other if you want a successful community.

I think it worked because rules were clear.  There were no toggle flags.  The war was woven into everything.

    Last 2 are lol.
fun is to each the individual, you can't say a game is fun as if fun for everyone.
3 factions is the exact reason i never cared about these weak pvp games,i need to see at least 20+ not 3.

My go to game of Unreal blows the doors off of ANY mmorpg for pvp,so to me it is not even close to being a debate.

Now if trying to argue best pvp for a mmorpg, well maybe your right but i wouldn't care because pvp does nothing to improve a mmorpg,it does the opposite,it makes the rpg worse.

Like most games DAOC had it's problems but let's be honest here, in 17 years since it's release there has been no game come even close to what this game had. I am still to this day completely shocked that nobody has tried to create a DAOC 2. The odd thing is, they don't need to do a bunch of fancy stuff for DAOC 2, just build the same game with updated UI.

Warhammer made an attempt, but it's biggest fail was that it was to complicated.. they tried to do too much fancy stuff in the game. You don't need all the crap that they come up with.. you just need a game that has the right base rule set and let the players create the fun.. that was the magic of DAOC.

DAOC was a very good game. Asheron's Call had way better PvP. Just sayin...
So good that i quit the very first day i tried it.I can't stand pvp in a mmorpg but i didn't even do any pvp,it was everything else that turned me off real fast.

I think we are talking about a game that was hanging around the time when gaming was minimal, each genre had little competition. If DaOC released today,i wouldn't give it the time of day.

Now this new game pretending to be DAOC2 and using every marketing angle they can think of based on DAOC,is not going to be any good either.

Pvp was amazing. I loved every bit of it. I leveled 3 characters to max and fought hsrd for Albion. That said, I still think SWG was better and the only reason I went bsck to DAoC was because of the NGE

I guess it was great if you were one of the stealth classes that could kill other players in 2 seconds...Unfortunately I was one of the ones being killed, so it was never one of my favs.

DAoC was ahead of it's time. I split my gaming hours between DAoC for Darkness Falls and EQ for the PvE.
    Good times...

You quit the very first day. No shit you hate everything not named FFXI. I love FFXI but when it comes to RvR, DAOC is by a long shot the best game on the market still. Best MMO to this day IMO.

Any of the tankier classes were a real threat to stealthers.  I remember tanking and spanking them myself on my Paladin.  It took a while with a sword and shield, but once I had survived the initial burst, they didn't keep up the sustained damage enough for things not to swing in my favor.  Of course, this was the rare occasion I got to fight with one without someone else intervening at any point.

Meh. I didn't play DAoC for the PvP as few actually did.. I played because at the time I was a huge fan of Mythic Entertainment and their past games and for the vastly underrated PvE the game offered pre Trials.

Out of 5k+ player pop servers only a few hundred were ever in the frontiers actively PvPing at once on average. Completely overrated and unbalanced.

Man I loved DAoC RvR ... I was dang good at it too (not a given when you're a support class). I got super good at ninja rezzes ... I realized if you rez and ran they'd come back to life where you were when the spell hit. So I'd rush out with everything hotkeyed, get just exactly into range, spam the button and run back, pulling my teammate along with me. I losts months of my life on seiges and battles and sneaky mean pvp. :D But anyway, I loved how the healers got crowd control too, and also they had the best system to keep people from camping, with bonuses on the mobs that grew or dwindled depending on how many times in a row their spawn was killed. Such a good game.

Unfortunately I hadn't had the opportunity to play DAoC but I only heard extremely good things about it. As a PvPer I'd love to get my hands on that game and try it out, but I've heard that it's quite dead these days.

EVE Online has overall the best PVP experience both from battle perspective and the whole alliance politic aspect, no game has come even close to that.

That's what I thought, not been following it but saw a F2P announcement somewhere.

New freeshard currently in open beta,  will wipe before launch.

Its a classic 1.65 ruleset with "quality of life" improvements which some friends of mine say are great and help get players to the RVR end game in a more reasonable time frame.

Give it a try at launch if you have always wanted to see what it was all about.
