Well as the concept of MOBA's evolved from MMOs and RTS, it would be nice of them to return the favour and actually make a MMO.
One of the amusing things you will get is things which don't make sense in a MMO that work fine in a MOBA. Just reading the above we find their is a port named Bilgewater. So who named it that, not the mayor I bet.
MOBA did not evolved from MMOs it was RTS. MMO had nothing to do with MOBA.
Despite what Wiki (lol) say's, it was a combination of MMO and RTS games. The MMO(RPG) portion came about due to player progression. The RTS portion is obvious.
@Scot much like myself, was around to see the beginning of this particular genre of gaming, it was well publicized then, and it holds true now that they (the original makers of the MODs) took their influence from a lot of game styles.
One must always remember: Wiki can be modified by pretty much anyone. Want to fail a college-level course? Cite wiki as a source.
Oh please by all means then enlighten me on what MMOs helped shape the MOBA?
I was there too. The answer is none. They came from Starcraft and Warcraft both RTS games. I owned both since launch. They had support for 10-12 players. There was nothing massively multiplayer going on.
But hey don't let reality get in the way of injecting MMO into everything.
On that note if Riot makes a four player co-op dungeon runner that will probably be called a MMO. So I really have to question if we are even talking about an actual MMORPG here. Are we?
We're not talking about an MMORPG. He never said MMORPG, someone else did.
What MOBA's took from MMOS was the concentration on the individual avatar, but yes the baulk was RTS. I think I am right in saying we also had MOBA games being called MMOs back in the day, until they found their avatar's feet as it were.
My point was, and still is, they were not developed in a vacuum, or unilaterally, they took influence from more than just RTS games. MMO"s being one. I agree that in the past people referred to MOBAs as MMO's and I do not agree that they are. Influenced by, yes. But not MMO's.
One of the best examples is what you pointed out, concentration on the individual. At any rate, it's not worth this much typing anyway. I have been playing MOBA's since they were just mods and I know what is accurate and what is not.
I was on here asking why these games were being called MMO like (or whatever phrase they used) when they came out, I can remember people putting MOBA's in with other new genre's as spin offs from the MMO genre.
But I am quite happy if people think they had a strong MMO influence or that we are talking out of our arses, all that's really important is getting a good MMO from LoL, they have the resources to put a lot of money into a project like that.
P.S I just checked the LOL forums and found posters on their still referring to it as a MMO, you had better get on their case.
Although its a big IP, do players of LoL think that fan base will want to play a MMO? We are talking about a very different gameplay format, it would seem to me that isf such players already had an interest in MMOs they would, but if not they will not go near it.

Well, Warcraft transitioned from a RTS to a MMO. You can't get much more different than that.

And their fans followed them, I played Warcraft myself, but it was more about what I was hearing about WoW that made me play WoW.
On that basis alone it looks good, but we all know what a risk studios think AAA MMO's are, well here is hoping they go for it anyway.
