What Blizzard misread was how wildly out of control people's
expectations would be at Blizzcon, which they attempted to temper by
releasing an annoucement just before to try and rein people in but was
unsuccessful.
They haven't mislead anyone if they really have several other Diablo
games in the work, but players probably need to let go of their
speculations until Blizzard is ready to share.
Not surprising Activision stock took a bit of a dive, no doubt dumped
by either investors who made the same miscalculation as gamers did, or
just a dump in retaliation by butthurt and petulant fans.
Blizzard will weather the storm and likely continue to rake in the cash and this kerfuffle will quickly fade into the past.
For now, with that single move, they delivered the whole ARPG genre to Path of Exile developers for an unknown amount of months/years.
"they aren't in touch with their players" is just true.
No one in their current fan-base was asking for a phone Diablol
And as for WoW Classic, that news was just disappointing. Part of the $15 sub?! Nope. Not for a 14 year old game. It should be $15 a month for live, $5 a month for classic, and $18 a month for the bundle of the two. That way they could use the hot marketing term 'bundle' and for both you would be saving $2 a month by bundling.
They missed it with both of those.
The only thing good I think was Warcraft 3 HD. Everything else was a wash in my opinion.
They may or may not be in touch with their fan base but I don't think the "No one in their current fan-base was asking for a phone Diablo" is the correct statement.
More like "they want to expand their fan base so they created a game on mobile to do so."
The two are not mutually exclusive...

It isn't that they're looking to expand their fanbase and created a mobile game to do so (though I would contend this will do little to increase Blizzard or Diablo's fanbase) that's the issue; it's that they completely ignored their core fanbase at Blizzcon in doing so. Their core fanbase are PC users; Blizzard has spent decades building a PC user fanbase and has only recently put any focus on consoles (and minimal focus, at that).
Many have already made the accurate analogies, but I'll give it a go: it's like going to a Wizards of the Coast convention and finding out their big announcement for MtG is a general-subject trivia board game that's only connection to MtG is the art and flavor text. Nobody really wanted it, and those who did wanted it only in a "it'd be kinda nifty" way.
I think the only thing they are guilty of is making a presentation to the wrong people.
It doesn't really matter that "no one from their player base asked for it" as they want to move into the mobile space. As they should.
They are a game company and a publicly traded one at that. That means that if they are not taking advantage of trends in gaming in order to make their investors a decent return then they aren't doing their job. I don't really need to tell you that, you're older, but some people still haven't wrapped their head around that fact. I can only assume they have yet to start investing in their future yet.
So "sure" they used the wrong event to make this announcement or at least they should have done it in a different way.
Also, I listened to the moment they made that announcement and it wasn't as if the entire auditorium jumped up and started throwing rocks. There were quite a few people, more than some others want to acknowledge, that were excited and applauded.
if the idea was to reach out to "those" people then mission accomplished.

It’s not meant literally... that no single human ever asked for it. I mean , technically the guy who authorized the project asked for it.
I think the point is that there was no groundswell of their community that was asking for it.

And I think you're overvaluing an event that's merely expected at such shows. Applause after an announcement, to some, is as much politeness as it is excitement. Audience members clap and cheer in these situations when they aren't even paying attention to what the actual announcement even is.
The only folks who asked for Diablo mobile in any significant way are those looking to profit from Diablo mobile.
The fanbase that literally paid Blizzard's way (as a development studio) up to this year didn't want it. Blizzard tried to force them to want it. They failed, and Blizzard deserves the backlash for trying to force-feed their core base a mobile title. It really is that simple.
Personally, the only reason I was anxious for blizzcon this year, was in hopes of Diablo 4 or a PC Diablo MMO, hell even a diablo 2 remaster would have been better then diablo immortal. When i heard that was the big announcement, I said no thanks, and felt disappointment.
It sucks for me as a PC gamer. I do not play mobile games but I am well aware there are a lot of people who do. Kuddos to them for getting Diablo Immortal. I guess ill continue waiting for a new ARPG's style game to come out on PC.

I think that's a rather bold assumption and also unfair.
So if Diablo 4 was announced we could also assume the same thing? That those applauding really weren't paying attention?
We don't really know who really liked this or not. Especially the people in that audience who "truly" liked it.
I'm not one to assume that because some people had a seemingly positive response that they "just didn't mean it" because it doesn't align with my tastes.

No, my point was that it's quite clear how differently the reaction was to this than other announcements Blizz has made at Blizzcons.
Neither one of us can give a roll call; so all we can do is judge reactions relative to one another. The evidence doesn't say there's a huge slice of core fanbase that desires a mobile version; the reaction Blizzard got tells us the opposite. Your point is to try and avoid the relative comparison in an attempt to assert there's a significant portion of the Diablo core that wants this. But all evidence points to the contrary
EDIT- remember, this was the first time many folks noted booing EVER happening at a Blizzcon. That booing happened in relation to THIS title announcement.
Being that i actually talk when i play games and listen to others talk and watch streams and listen to chat and the players,i have NEVER once heard anyone mention they wanted a Diablo mobile, never even once.
Further more Diablo is not even about grouping or talking,so how would Blizzard know anything about what the players want, they heard it from 50 people at some Blizzcon 5 years ago?LMAO.
Blizzard if anyone has been living under a rock,is a FOLLOWER,they are always late to the show and just copy other current trends.
They were very late to the TCG market, very late to the moba market, they simply copied EQ for the Wow template. They try to make subtle changes to pretend they are some creative developer, bottom line is they are just aiming at the current trendy markets.
Mobile has been ripping up profits for many low budget devs,Blizzard knows this but has never been good designing games for themselves outside the PC.This is the same reason they struggled so badly trying to make that secret Starcraft Ghost for console, they had to outsource the idea and apparently failed a couple times.
Do i even need to point back at the pathetic obvious>>>the Pandarin lol idea, but hey they claimed they weren't moving in right on top of the Panda movies,oh of course not,we believe you Blizzard....sigh.

I'll wait and see if, once it launches, it is successful. I think that will be more telling. I bet it will be. I bet that mobile players will find it fun and that we will all, once again, realize that super-fans are not the group to make judgements about the regular, casual players.

The issue has always been about how Blizzard used Blizzcon to announce this like they did; they could've included it at some random gaming conference as a part of their overall presentation and nobody would've batted an eye.
But that's what it means to be out of touch with your fan base: trying to hype them on something you should know isn't something they'll be hyped about. /Shrug
My opinion is Blizzard's name and IP will mean nothing on the app store, and the title will not be unusually popular relative to that market. That doesn't mean it won't be profitable. It will have a group of whales who drop the majority of their mobile gaming funds on it each month, like numerous other mobile games.
It won't be ground-breaking. It won't be innovative, unless there are big changes and additions that have yet to be announced, and it isn't even really being developed by Blizzard, but by NetEase with Blizzard's direction, apparently. That gives me doubts it will even achieve the traditional Blizzard level of polish. The title appears to be everything Blizzard ever avoided to earn its place within the industry. And they announced it as if fans should've been expected to welcome it with open arms. You can't get more out of touch than that.
And they announced it as if fans should've been expected to welcome it with open arms. You can't get more out of touch than that.
Well, like I said, they may or may not be out of touch. I do think it was the wrong venue/event to do it as players would be expecting something like Diablo 4 or "Diablo the MMORPG", etc.
But it is possible that among those in the audience or those that play Diablo 3, that there are people who like the idea.
of course, some of the "super fans" are going to decry it and downvote it as they see a chance to do it. And then point to that as evidence that "no one wanted it."
But we've seen too often in the past that just because people say they don't want it or like it doesn't mean that there aren't others who do or that those initial people will eventually be won over.
how may times, on this forum alone, have we seen someone make a post saying "I originally hated the idea but decided to break down and try it ... " with some people actually changing their mind.
Look I get it, I was disappointed as well (though truth be told, I'm more disappointed on the direction of their Diablo 3 art design and secretly hope they go back to a more gritty rendering of the world ... won't happen but there it is ...) but I'm not going to make a blanket statement that this is going to be a failure and that it isn't possible that it will be a hit.
After all, the original World of Warcraft games were real time strategy, they never entered the mmorpg genre but they did and they did extremely well. Why can't this be the same thing, they enter the mobile arena and have lightning strike again?
I know people "say" that World of Warcraft was only successful off its name in the RTS world but most of the people I know who play it (well, all but one) never played the Real Time Strategy games and only knew World of Warcraft from their friends/family playing it or advertisements.

Trying to connect this to there stock is a bit of a reach the entire market basically dipped and always does before an election .Not to mention that Blizz is the smaller part of ATVI altho strong they have the least MAU of the 3 in Activision/King/ Blizz . so again we are going to attribute the stock drop for ATVI prior to an election to just what amounts to 1/3rd of the corp solely in Blizzs lap ..Stop it , the dip is because of the election ( i have not spoken to a single person that sold there stock because of Blizzcon). There are alot of things globally effecting the entire market right now that would attribute any slip to also , before i would blame Immortal , to the contrary it should be a strong addition to the Blizz stable in the future
But to continue thru there article they are correct and i pointed out Blizz could have lessened the PR blow with a D4 Teaser/Trailer , and yes they have been working on D4 for a while
Market went up overall on Monday, same day Activision went down....but so did Apple.

What Blizzard misread was how wildly out of control people's expectations would be at Blizzcon, which they attempted to temper by releasing an annoucement just before to try and rein people in but was unsuccessful.
They haven't mislead anyone if they really have several other Diablo games in the work, but players probably need to let go of their speculations until Blizzard is ready to share.
Not surprising Activision stock took a bit of a dive, no doubt dumped by either investors who made the same miscalculation as gamers did, or just a dump in retaliation by butthurt and petulant fans.
Blizzard will weather the storm and likely continue to rake in the cash and this kerfuffle will quickly fade into the past.
stop blaming gamers, it was an error on blizzards part. It's a franchise with a primarily pc fanbase. They hyped up diablo as their center piece only to announce a mobile game. That's like bethesda's fallout 4 reveal actually turning out to be fallout shelter and nothing else. It's a result of being out of touch with thier fans. Read mark kern's twitter if you want the best description of what happened. Now stop being a shill.

It was an error on their part. People will live another day to play the diablo game of their choice. No one died because of that announcement.

Lol Kyleran the shill.. wtf ..
And its funny how people want to ignore the fact that Blizz is part of Activision who also own King (Candy Crush etc.. ) ATVI entered this mobile market in 2015 and has a part to play here in having Blizz expand D3 to mobile , most likely to increase Blizz MAU numbers as they were lowest in stable last year ..
Lol,and Mark Kern .. really hes been upset and butthurt at Blizz since they chased him out , then REd 5 chased him outa Firefall ..... He needs to get a job ..
The real problem is that the Diablo franchise has been neglected for far too long. Reaper of Souls was a great expansion, but the game has gotten very little support since.
I question Wyatt Chang's leadership. I questioned it before this fiasco. This ill-timed decision was just icing on the cake after years of what essentially amounts to maintenance mode. You (Blizzard) can have your mobile game, but you should also be doing a better job on the franchise popular, and no other developer would get away with this for as long as you have.

My posts aren't asserting it will be a failure. But, let's assume I did assert it, and allow me to answer the question: because this isn't even a Blizzard game, from all we've seen. It's a NetEase game using Blizzard's IP.
It will likely be monetarily successful. Anyone with the dough that Activision Blizzard has should literally be able to buy profitable games from the mobile market; it's not really that hard when you partner with someone like NetEase. Hell, take a board game, convert it to an app, include in-app purchases.
Blizzard signaled they were willing to sacrifice their core fanbase to swipe some of that cash grab; does anyone really think we'll have a rennaissance of complex mobile gaming while 6 inch touchscreen controls are still the primary means of interfacing? Does anyone really think that bright, innovative ideas for IPs and gameplay design are hanging out on an iPhone? I haven't seen it. The reports suggest the UI and controls for Immortal are par for the course. That's because devs don't have any options; touchscreen with about 2 square inches for UI or bust. Not to mention that the most involved of mobile games sucks battery life like a Brazzers model marathon. Folks don't use mobile phones primarily for gaming, and the touchscreen isn't a versatile tool for fast-paced, precise control input; as such, game devs are highly limited in what they can do with it.
That's why fans are mad. That's why Blizzard comes out of this looking like failures to their core fanbase. That's why so many are upset.
It's everything Blizzard built a name avoiding, all condensed into a singular capstone announcement at the end of the first day at Blizzcon.

So you do not think that most of that diablo fanbase will not come back for a D4... Sure not all. Some will simply have moved on no matter.
Me... I think them be coming back.. in piles.
So... Then you have the D4 monye, the immortal money and with no real damage to the brand at large...
But that is just my theory, no more or less valid than yours. But perhaps a bit more balanced.
That depends on when Diablo 4 releases. The Diablo brand isn't the holy icon of gaming that it once was, after controversies surrounding Diablo 3 and years of neglect by Blizzard. Now, there are competitors in the genre (namely Path of Exile) which have eclipsed Diablo in popularity.
Diablo 4 needs to not only be good, but also timely. If it is still years off, the Diablo brand may no longer be synonomous with its own genre, mark my words.

I said fans are angry, and they have every right to be. It seems you and others, in a rush to respond, want to try and assert points that aren't relevant to that to try and rebuke the idea that fans are angry or have a right to be.
None of what you said is applicable to my posts in this thread.
That's true. I mean, how do we really know that "no one asked for it?"
It’s not meant literally... that no single human ever asked for it. I mean , technically the guy who authorized the project asked for it.
I think the point is that there was no groundswell of their community that was asking for it.
Your correct. But I do think they are looking to expand into mobile and what better way than to get some people in your customer base to try the game, love the game (they hope) and spread the word?
Because, again, as I mentioned above, isn't that partly what happened with World of Warcraft? People played the real time strategy games, they became interested, they might have brought some friends into it so there was a small core of people and then they advertised the crap out of it and got "everyone else."

It sucks for me as a PC gamer. I do not play mobile games but I am well aware there are a lot of people who do. Kuddos to them for getting Diablo Immortal. I guess ill continue waiting for a new ARPG's style game to come out on PC.
