I know people like Bcbully and Ikcin equate the numbers playing MOBAs to indicate the huge popularity of PvP. I don't disagree I myself love PvP in MOBAs I play. That is because it is an even playground. That does not mean I'm going to PvP in an MMORPG .

Problem is that it is so very easy to drive people away with poor systems. They can easily feel that the there is no hope to overcome the odds especially when the system allows groups to gang up on players and out level and out equip them. You need a good regulatory system which a lot of developers are too lazy to implement and too afraid to because it might piss of the hardcore gankers. I dislike PvP because I have never seen the fairness in it and I liked it in MOBAs and even in DAOC .

I think DAOC was amazing because it did it a lot right. I wish more games could replicate the formula.
MOBA's are a seperate genre, its a huge one obviously as is the survival BR genre of which Fortnite is probably the prime example, but the players who play those games are almost entirely seperate from the MMO playerbase, perhaps thats why the PVP playerbase for MMO's is so small and why it remains 'small' because the players interested in PVP prefer short matches and/or timed games and aren't really interested in games with persistent worlds and a large player numbers, better to be a big fish in a small pond than a minnow in shark infested waters, because MOBA's and even BR games don't involved all that many players, so the possibility of one person or a small group of people 'winning' is much higher, PVP is competitive after all. :p

Also -- in before they come in and say "pvp is never fair" and "real life is not fair" etc.

I'm fully aware that they are a separate genre altogether but so many people argue that Battle Arena and games like Fortnite and survival games all prove that PvP is very popular and should be shoehorned in every game and done so without consent because the numbers prove it is the cat's pyjamas.

Open World PvP is awesome. If you can't handle it then get better organized. Quit crying and get some friends and organize a strategy to beat the PvPers. Crying babies kill games not the system. Most PvE players I run across simply don't belong in mmo's. They want their cake and eat it to. They don't want to suffer and get better. Guess what dying is good. Yes over and over repeatedly dying is good. It teaches you how to play your class.
People like you are the reasons these games die. Why? Because like a criminal on the street, you're an opportunist looking for easy targets. The second those targets decide to move on and leave you with people who can defend themselves, you and your ilk are the ones who turn into a bunch of crying babies. If that weren't true you'd have no problem with the existence of PvE servers, and that's a fact.

You pick on the weak to make yourself feel strong, yet when only strong remain you realize that you've been among the weak all along. It's sadistic and pathetic at the same time.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

The problem with PvP in MMORPG is that it is difficult to mix substantive progression with PVP.  If a person can earn levels and become substantively stronger than another player there will be abuses - those that hunt low level characters.

This is why Battlefield (PVP) can be so wildly popular - while games that have progression and PVP are wildly unpopular.  While there is some progression in Battlefield tthe fact is that even a noob player can be just as deadly as a fully geared player.  If you're going to have PVP you have to have an even playing field.

The idea that most people are too weak to handle PVP is just flat out wrong since there are many huge titles out there that have even PVP.  What isn't wildly popular is being new  to a game and having hours of work stolen by people against whom you literally stood no chance at all.

The justice systems I've seen so far have been so easily circumvented as to be comical.

But if you like to PVE your way to the center of a dungeon only to engage the liche lord - and have him half dead in cutthroat battle only to have PiMpM@sT3r ride up, one shot you in the back, finish the liche and take your stuff by all means keep playing.   Whatever.
