At a time in gaming where several say a game has to have multiplayer to succeed, Obsidian steps in to show off their latest foray into the single player RPG experience with their newest game The Outer Worlds with the help of Private Division. A new title that is part of a new IP for them aims to prove that they are still one of the best companies around in this aspect of gaming. I had an opportunity to visit Obsidian’s headquarters recently and get a look at the game and what it’s all about.

    They seen to be going out of their way to not talk about the details of the lead character. How involved will character creation be? Will there be little character creation, just put a helmet on him and he can be anyone, like Warframe. Will the lead character be voiced or silent?

    I have faith Obsidian will deliver the goods. Mortal Kombat and the Outer Worlds were the biggest highlights of the Game Awards for me.

    This may well be a convention now but I have not noticed it before. The game is played on three platforms, PS4, Xbox and Steam. Windows or PC's do not get a mention, we play on Steam. :)

    It wouldn't be surprising if it does end up being similar to Fallout given that they developed Fallout New Vegas.

    It will be as Fallout as can be, probably, with the two at the helm being involved in the original Fallout.

    This looks so much better than Fallout anything could ever be. There is a vibrancy and campiness to this sci fi setting that adds a ton of character.

    This seems, to me, more interesting than the Fallout games. It's not the color but has more to do with the humor.

    That's a large part of it. I also think that there is something of a "brave new world" feeling to it. It isn't hopeless and futile like a post apocalyptic setting.

    You have to consciously work for it to romance a companion in FO4.

    Avoiding it is literally a matter of not choosing that dialogue option if it comes up, which won't come up unless you tug the companion around and make them like/idolize you.

    The same is true of Persona, by the way. You have to really work for a romantic relationship and max out that social link. But even if you do, you have a dialogue choice to friendzone that character.

    I'll definitely be playing this but I hope they keep churning out the isometric cRPGs as well. I want a Tryanny sequel.
    I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

    Maybe it's going to be available on Win, Mac and Linux so it's easier to say Steam?

    They created Fallout 1 and 2. They're the creators of the entire IP. Bethesda just owns it legally, not creatively.

    Some people at Interplay went on to form Obsidian. The people in that group are also associated with Troika, Black Isle, and inXile. Those stuiods created Fallout 1/2, Vampire/Bloodlines, Arcanum, Wasteland, and some very popular D&D games.

    That's not a guaranteed win of course, but they're not some group of copy cats chasing Bethesda. If anything I wonder if they find FO4 and FO76 laughable and feel they can do better. Developers can be like that and it's obvious to me that Bethesda doesn't really get the Fallout IP.

    This game might literally come out and illicit review snippets like "what Fallout should've been since the change from isometric," due to how badly received FO76 has been.  I doubt Bethesda releases another Fallout title prior the Outer World's being released.

    Woe to Bethesda if Obsidian releases this game relatively bug-free, too.
