But my first thought was "Well this OC person ought stop shit posting on every game out there and do something productive"
You do realize that the MAJORITY of games and their devs are NOT giving us their HONEST effort, they are in FACT running a business, one designed to make as much money from as little effort as possible. NOBODY gets a free pass in this world and nobody is giving you their honest effort in the game industry. You can look at developers EXACTLY like you see Twitch Streamers, the vast majority are out there to make money and NOT to simply SHARE the love of gaming.
If there are 500 in a row crap games or all looking like some weekend warrior made them, why should anyone give them credit when all they are doing is trying to scam us by trying to sell us crap? I'll tell you how it works, devs make a great game that warrant our money, they are trying to SELL us a product, you do that with good effort and a good product. You do not simply sell us something and expect accolades for nothing.A business MUST earn respect and EARN it's money, nothing is for free, not money or accolades.
Go build a house, your tradesman all do a crap job, what do you do praise them for trying?Your likely going to complain, tell them to get it right or they don't get paid, that is how the REAL world works and that is how the gaming business works.
Funny you used my field as an example, but, there are a few things.
First, is for a larger project like a whole house, I get paid up-front. Because there is no way in hell my company is going to front that kind of project, (some rare exceptions have happened with very long standing dependable and very profitable clients, but that is not Joe Average)
With that said, unless they are a sub, I have to pay them by the hour, so if they do a bad job, I am still legally obligated to pay them for all hours worked, my only real option at that point, is to pay them and let them go.
Blah.. Blah.. Blah. some other shit no one cares about.. Anyway.
Now, I am sure I shared far too much about that crap already.. but.. you know what I love.. above and beyond everything else, I fucking love it when the Home-Owner-To-be, who can't put a nail in straight, tells me how I should be doing my job.. every professional just fucking loves that. /s
And games are not the exception.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

Generally I would think an entire house would be some sort of escrow arrangement, with funds being released at agreed upon milestones of completion.

What bothers me about the way he is acting is not so much that he's acting like a child. To me, his behavior just shows how defensive he is about how shitty his company (and by extension him) is being to the fans/consumers that paid him money for a specific task. It's scummy and people are calling him scummy and he is reacting like a defendant on Judge Judy.
People gave him WAY too much credit up until this point. It was all based on a prehistoric game, that people loved, in which he was not the sole vision behind. He was not able to work his magic and make this CU thing happen after all. His legacy will likely be one of failure and I'm sure that is extremely irritating.

Just to be clear the forum trolls were giving him shit after he announced the 2nd project right?
Wouldn't the normal reaction to backlash after such a huge announcement be appeasement and reassurance? Why would someone with so much industry experience fly off the rails at some forum random? That type of behavior makes me think that CU is in worse shape than we'd all like. Defending yourself is one thing and alright for anyone to do but his specific reaction there seems like a man in a tough spot. Hoping CU is still a go.
This is just one example of how Jacobs is talking to people who don't support him in the comments to the Massively article. I'll let you make up your own mind as to whether this is how the head of a company should be interacting with the public.

Thanks OC for once again, doing that lying thing you do so well.
You’ve been saying for years, when you are going to livestream and we did. And yet, even though we showed what are engine can do and Eliot got to play it live himself (and he commented on it), you’re ignoring that just to shitpost me and CU and our engine.
I hope you’re getting paid to do this, at least part of my job is to talk to the community. You spend a lot of your time shitposting me, other games, and anybody who dares to question SC. At least I’m making two game and an engine. What are you contributing to the world OC?
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, you’re WKing SC, attacking anybody who disagrees with on their threads and me/CU here.
Yeah, big accomplishment. You must be so proud.

Should really add some context for Oleg's posts. He did nothing but troll in those comments, to the point where the staff went in and locked both of his comment chains because of how trolly he was being.
It should come as no surprise to see people lose their patience, we all do it.
never defend bad behavior as their only human, that just lets shitty people be shitty. look up the word professional. i'll save the lazy some time and post one of the text from a definition i found.
" c (1): characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession
(2): exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace "
if all it takes to break you is random text, your already doing some thing wrong. same with every other justified reason people snap, you had a choice before then, you just wanted to use aggression to solve it and since we allow it for X reason, it bleed into normal behavior and that's the " grey " area were some times it's ok and others times we " feel " their wrong and wonder why it accepted.
I don't understand why you are still so hung up on this. You have already stated you do not like this and that you are getting a refund.. Why not move on or are you trying to be like OC and dump on the game cause you do not like what they are doing?
...because like he said, he is "anonymous shitposter and has nothing to lose".
Though, dare not to pay him the same favour in return.
Dev's today need to have a really thick skin, especially those that are doing this crowd funding stuff.
You can't really get through by just ignoring it, that is in fact how we got there in the first place. What is needed is to (re)learning how to say fuck you to your customer politely and in calm manner, not just as a result of frustruation and losing a temper.
However, it would take a much broader change to be effective - not only the devs(business) side needs to stand up and put limits to behavior that is no longer acceptable but media as well....gonna be a long haul to get there tough...if ever...

It's a good time for one, with Stage Three of our alpha around the corner in April.
I think the problem is that this site, along with any part of the internet that cankers for presence is that it has decided the only way to do that is to become more like the epitome of social media. In the past professionalism, depth and nuance were the hallmarks of a good gaming forum or magazine. Now it is sensationalism, bite sized items and narrative. This started under Bill and Susie, they were not immune to the sea change brought about by Facebook and Twitter. But they did hold to the old school way more than the new editors, maybe that's just down to age?
Also some of the articles like those of Red and Bradford are good, indeed all the writers on here can write a good article. It is more about what is being chosen to talk about, which increasingly must conform to social media criteria. I should point out that element of "showbiz" was always there in gaming news, it's just now pushing everything else out.
In your case SoL decided not to keep doing updates which is a cardinal sin from a social media perspective. Unfortunately "gaming news" is now all about the buzz and the hype and you are not performing like the trained social media monkeys you now must be. Indeed it would be great for your social media presence if one of your team could do videos where he acts like an absolute idiot, pulling funny faces and making banal jokes. That's where we are today, this site just reflects that awful fact.

The house and the contractor are not really a good example. If you don’t pay the contractor he gets the house and the land the house is on. I don’t know about where you are, but where I am the land is worth much more than the house. Many many cases of contractors not paying the subcontractors and the unfortunate home owner finding out they have an unexpected lean on their home. Many very reputable contractors but there are just as many that are here today and gone tomorrow.

High end contractors do not get money up front, your second sentence had been 100% correct IME, Bank would walk thru with us every 2 weeks and release money for paying subs , I still consult for a company that i did work for , for over 20 years , No money was up front Ever..
But you cannot walk in there door without a 5mill home to do ,and financing locked up..( ive done homes up to 38 mill) unless you are a previous client , Was just out to visit a former clients home that is a getting a 1.4 mill Garage on the property..
We do alot of work for celebs , Sports Stars , and Goverment officials , ive even met Buffet at one clients home..At a party when the house was complete , that was a 23 mill home in 08 .. The homes generally take 2.5 to 3 years to complete ..
But on topic , ive gotten into discussions here with MJ and called him out on some of the Warhammer issues that he fell short on .. Its a very long thread .. I also said he could not dleiver CU in a timely manner and when he does it will not have all the features and clases he has sold the public .. I still stand by that

At least show what MJ actually said:
Mark Jacobs
OC, as usual, not a lot of truth in what you said but hey, that’s your gig when it comes to me and CU. But hey, keep hurling invective at me, WKing SC and insulting anybody who dares criticize it. OTOH, the only people I’ve called trolls are the same people, who say/have said the same things about me and CU, time after time, year after year. And in some cases, one didn’t even bother to read the article or see the stream. And yes OC, you are one of them now, a troll. But please, keep making stuff up, you’re really good at it and you make me laugh! But hey, here’s some examples of your disconnection with reality:
1) He convinced himself he is a good guy and everyone who disagrees are trolls and bad guys. Hmm, there’s been a lot of negative posters here and I’ve addressed all of them other than you, Apollo, and Buddy with 100% polite responses or no responses at all. And not once did I call any of you bad guys. And on our Forums and here, people are entitled to voice their opinions as long as they are opinions and not posed as statements of fact. But hey, why let the truth get in the way of an attack on me from you.
2) Where CU is amazing and millions play it Actually, I’ve said the exact opposite from day one and you know it. We are a niche game and that’s what I expect from it. It’s not the type of game that millions would play and pay for as a sub-based game. But again, facts are tough for you, I know.
3)7 years after taking millions of backers money and producing nothing but an empty shell of an engine An engine that can do things that no other engine has shown that it can do. And gee Mr. OC, didn’t Eliot even say that the game’s ability to handle hordes of NPCs was impressive? Oh, and aren’t you always complaining that we don’t ever livestream things? So we do, and showed it live with CSE folks, then with Backers.
4) Where he is a prophet and only he can save MMO genre. Wow, when have I ever said that OC? I certainly didn’t say it today since Colossus isn’t an MMO. And I didn’t even say that in the KS. And, as you know, I’ve even said here about the other, currently successful MMOs. You must be confusing me with somebody else who thinks he is a prophet.
OC, you are a troll for one reason, you have done nothing but attack CU, myself, CSE for years no matter what we do/show. And at the same time, you search the SC threads looking for anything bad that people say about Chris or RSI and defend him/it while also looking to deflect it, at times, by throwing shade at us.
So, enjoy yourself OC as I head to bed. I’m sure you can find some other things to make fun of CU or me that aren’t true either.
Oh, and here’s a bit of irony in your post: “He looks at not what he has done so far, but what he could do in his wild dreams.” Gosh, who does that sound like? I seem to remember that you always talk about Chris’ vision and his willingness to push the envelope, try new things, expand the scope and you defend it to the end.
But, even if that was true of me, and it’s not, I guess it can’t apply to me, only to your chosen one. But hey, facts and all that stuff again. Good night OC, have a great weekend!
Bet you thought I was asleep, didn’t you? You’ve done this before, make these kinds of posts when most normal east coast folks would be asleep. OTOH, I’m here talking to some folks, posting on our Forums, and getting some work done. sometimes they are deleted by MODs sometimes not. We’ll see what happens with this one.
Mark Jacobs
Not bashing Chris at all OC. As you know I’ve defended his vision in SC posts every so often. But, if you are going to commend somebody for having a vision that exceeds his current capabilities and then attack somebody who you say is doing the same, then you are a hypocrite. After all, didn’t Chris expand SC from the KS because he had a vision of doing something great? And at the time, he didn’t have the capabilities then, did he? But he did it anyway because he believed in his vision and there is nothing wrong with that when he delivers on SC and all the cool stuff he and they are working on. But, if I was the guy you said I was, then I should get the same free pass shouldn’t I? Fortunately for me I’m not. I have a much smaller scope in mind for FS:R and CU and I’m content with that.
Oh, and as usual with your posts, more lies from you. Please show me these walls of text I write every day. I post on MOP, my Forums, and MOP, my Forums, oh yeah, forgot, MOP and my Forums. And as people on my Forums could tell you, I hadn’t been posting there a lot over the last 6 months. Guess that was because I had a vision/design for a new game that we could develop at the same time as CU. Just too busy I guess.
You’re doing great OC, keep hurling invective and lies without addressing the lies (such as me calling everybody who disagrees with me trolls and/or bad guys) in your other statements. It’s terribly amusing, and you’d make many a politician proud, you do it so well. Like I said, predictable.
Mark Jacobs
Thanks OC for once again, doing that lying thing you do so well.

Investors covered our 2019 calendar year (and half of 2018), and are covering the bulk of 2020 to-date, so we've been able to get away with zero social media presence for the past year because we have been in closed alpha with our early access community plugging away and no need to drive revenue in pre-order sales, thus no need to promote anything.
Coming up on April of this year and moving into Stage Three, we're moving back to regularly publishing updates on social media (we started last week) ahead of the re-opening of our pre-order store in mid-March.
Given that we're roughly two years from our launch window, we're starting to do publicity for the first time ever, and the irony here is that we aren't going to the "gaming media" sites as our primary contact. Instead, we're leveraging content creators and influencers on a global scale starting with our affiliates in mid-March.
Reasoning? All of the things you mention. And, as a rule, we get far better results working directly with the influencers and content creators of the gaming the world. Not only are their fans and followers tuned in to what we are building, but they themselves are passionate about what we are building, and they aren't generating revenue based on clickbait advertising, but rather on creating actual quality content.
Using this site as an example: some time before Bill left he posted some article about most anticipated MMORPGs launching in 2019 and included us on the list, despite us never having confirmed a launch date at the time. When we contacted him to please remove us from that list as it was confusing people with false information, he never got back to us and the list continued to promote us as one of the top games coming out in the 2019 calendar year. Probably still has us listed. (yes, it does: page 3, https://www.mmorpg.com/columns/the-list-the-most-anticipated-mmos-of-2019-1000013313/page/3, with a stated "early 2019" release. WTF LOL)
At no point in time did Bill reach out to us about a publishing date. At no point in time did anyone from the MMORPG staff reach out to us to verify anything, whatsoever. And despite multiple requests for them to fix their faulty reporting, it never happened. Despite our FAQ page, at the time, clearing stating that we did not have a publishing date in mind yet.
Then there was the time Susie and I had a bit of a tussle in the forums in 2018 or whenever it was, for no one having ever updated our page despite us having tried reaching out and contacting them for some ridiculous amount of time (I think it was 18+ months and 6 or so email requests, been forever ago so memory is hazy). Only after raising a stink on the forums did our page get updated (emails went unresponded for the entire time previous). And I then got a warning flag on my account for being disruptive and disrespectful.
So yeah. My confidence in the once-great MMORPG sites is pretty much nill. That's why we prefer working with streamers/content creators. Not only are they passionate about games, but they actually reach out and want to do interviews, their followers are passionate about our Q&As and live sessions, and they drive sales.
I'm all for gaming media sites if they have quality journalism and professional staff who love their job and do it for the craft, not for the clickbait. But if not? Well, there's a great big wide world out there with a whole lotta content creators who are eager to work with us and I'm more than happy to give them the exclusives if they are going to drive sales and publicity for us.
More on-topic: I totally relate to how Mark Jacobs has reacted to people. I've done the same. And I'm absolutely unapologetic for it. I'm not going to tip-toe around trollish behavior; I'm going to confront it. And it's directly a "for better or worse" thing. Because the better option is obviously to just ignore it. And you can, for the most part, ignore the majority of the trolls. But sometimes you just gotta reply to the assholes for being what they are. For better or for worse.
I'm sure anyone who has been here for the past five years has been witness to me doing the same on MMORPG.com, especially in the 2015-2016 era, before I stopped giving a shit and focused on our early access community and only them.
Nah in the real world if you don't like the house you hired people to build you just don't pay them!
Even during Dark Age of Camelot days he would speak his mind on the VN Vault Boards. I think it is better to just be who he is why would he change or become timid, he is not one to pay lip service nor be cowed I guess. I prefer this reaction to feigned courtesy.
I would say don't give up on gaming forums and sites, there are solid articles on here and the staff show they are fans by streaming games that came out years ago or doing an in depth look at the likes of Lotro which is already written of as too old by many. Also you can't blame the current crew for the mistakes of the old crew.
I think we need to engage with gaming journalists, make them realise the Twitter model is not good for a magazine format or that matter a gaming TV show! The staff here have displayed professionalism but the siren like call of a more social media approach increasingly draws them in. Instead of seeing the lack of activity compared to social media as a weakness remember these are all fans, that is a strength. Unlike social media where somebody who has no intention of playing the game (possibly even the genre) can turn up and comment on the latest "fiasco" (whatever the truth), we are invested.
But my first thought was "Well this OC person ought stop shit posting on every game out there and do something productive"

Interesting, I never hire contractors who ask for any down payment up front, figuring they are living too close to the edge making them a risk.
Generally I would think an entire house would be some sort of escrow arrangement, with funds being released at agreed upon milestones of completion.
Your last comment reminded me of the movie the Accountant, when the hired assassin dismisses his employer's suggestions with a sarcastic "I just love when people try to tell me how to do my job."
Tell me, do you like people telling you how to do your Job?
I mean you might be the one gracious soul that loves having people that don't know how to do your job, telling you how to do your job.
I excel so much in my job people are too much in awe to even think of making a suggestion.
Cheers

I think a lot of other game developers are looking at this, and really rethinking that whole CrowdFund thing, I mean, really, who wants to deal with a bunch of entitled arm chair developers that also want to roleplay investors.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I still stand by that
LOL, I feel some serious pity for anyone that reads that, and thinks they will be able to vvvcommission a multi-million dollar project without paying a deposit.
That's hilarious.
But back on Topic.
Personally, I think MJ is just going to be another fine example of why Devs should not waste their time, or risk their reputation, interacting with the community.
They should hire PR reps that can sanitize everything before it goes public.

Well , its different ,in most cases, the money is paid to the Bank( the Bank inspects progress bi-weekly ime) , the bank releases the money as i said ....
It just does not work that way at that level,( simply giving your Contractor 33% up front for example )
The example i gave in my last post , that project started at 18 mill and when done after 3 years of construction was 23 mill , the Banks/Architects /In Designers/Art Curators /Historical Society / Insurance etc .. have a say every step of the way, parameters are set and must be met under heavy scrutiny

I'm all for engagement, but that requires the gaming media sites to reach out and ask for Q&As, interviews, podcasts, vodcasts, game streams, and more. Not simply rely on the latest Tweets/blog posts/YouTube videos to go out and then post a link to it as "news".
Meanwhile, streamers/bloggers/content creators regularly reach out to us (dozens per week, sometimes) wanting to do interviews, stream our game for content on their channels, have Q&As with our team, and etc.

I mean you might be the one gracious soul that loves having people that don't know how to do your job, telling you how to do your job.
People gave him WAY too much credit up until this point. It was all based on a prehistoric game, that people loved, in which he was not the sole vision behind. He was not able to work his magic and make this CU thing happen after all. His legacy will likely be one of failure and I'm sure that is extremely irritating.
Cheers

Wouldn't the normal reaction to backlash after such a huge announcement be appeasement and reassurance? Why would someone with so much industry experience fly off the rails at some forum random? That type of behavior makes me think that CU is in worse shape than we'd all like. Defending yourself is one thing and alright for anyone to do but his specific reaction there seems like a man in a tough spot. Hoping CU is still a go.
if all it takes to break you is random text, your already doing some thing wrong. same with every other justified reason people snap, you had a choice before then, you just wanted to use aggression to solve it and since we allow it for X reason, it bleed into normal behavior and that's the " grey " area were some times it's ok and others times we " feel " their wrong and wonder why it accepted.
they annouce direction.. dont like it? ask for a refund.. no problem.. and move to another game..
Though, dare not to pay him the same favour in return.
Are you new to these boards?
However, it would take a much broader change to be effective - not only the devs(business) side needs to stand up and put limits to behavior that is no longer acceptable but media as well....gonna be a long haul to get there tough...if ever...

2) Where CU is amazing and millions play it
Actually, I’ve said the exact opposite from day one and you know it. We are a niche game and that’s what I expect from it. It’s not the type of game that millions would play and pay for as a sub-based game. But again, facts are tough for you, I know.
3)7 years after taking millions of backers money and producing nothing but an empty shell of an engine
An engine that can do things that no other engine has shown that it can do.
Oh, and here’s a bit of irony in your post:
“He looks at not what he has done so far, but what he could do in his wild dreams.”
Gosh, who does that sound like?
Cya!
We had Empires run by Emperors, we had Kingdoms run by Kings, now we have Countries...
Then you get sued by that company.
That's hilarious.
But back on Topic.
Personally, I think MJ is just going to be another fine example of why Devs should not waste their time, or risk their reputation, interacting with the community.
They should hire PR reps that can sanitize everything before it goes public.
Meanwhile, streamers/bloggers/content creators regularly reach out to us (dozens per week, sometimes) wanting to do interviews, stream our game for content on their channels, have Q&As with our team, and etc.
I go where the interviews take me.
