As much as I love VR, I don't see it ever becoming a de-facto way of playing games for mainline.
I'd love for it to certainly be built out more as an actual option for more games, but I'd want it as exactly that. An option.
We have cloud gaming and VR on the horizon as the de-facto way to play. Considering both increase bandwidth usage and cloud is the cheaper though not better way to play (a platform at home is better), I think cloud will win out.
You are mistaken. Cloud is the more expensive way to play. Bandwidth is far more expensive than flops. If you're comparing how expensive it is to play on a PC to streaming, compare the PC running at low settings, not max settings, to get something more comparable to the cloud experience. The cheap laptop can handle low settings in most games.
I hope you are right, but this is about perception as much as reality; if players believe the cloud will be cheaper and sufficiently decent looking that is the way we are headed. I can only hope that players realise they will be taking a money, graphics and lag hit for the cloud dream.
At some point, people will look at price tags and see that it's cheaper to run a game locally. The prices that companies charge for goods and services is closely related to the cost of providing those goods and services. Charge too little and you lose money. Charge too much and competitors swoop in to undercut your prices and take your market share.
And rendering a game locally will always be cheaper than streaming it for reasons of physics. It's cheaper to send data a millimeter inside of a GPU chip than hundreds of miles over the public Internet. When you think about it that way, it's obvious not only why it's the case today, but why it will always be the case.
There probably will be a market for stupid people who think that cloud gaming is cheaper because they save a little money on hardware up front, even if they spend a lot more later on a more expensive ISP. That's kind of like how rent-to-own furniture stores have a market, but it's not all that big of a market.
*I* decide what games *I* play. If ALL games go to "VR", I have LOTS of old games I still enjoy on my "old, decrepit, and outdated" PC.
If VR is the "objective future" of gaming, have fun
I am not sure if I would "Objective Future" as more an inevitable future, much in the same way Phones/Mobile Handheld have become the current platform of gaming.
I was just watching a video of someone playing GW2 on some handheld.
As I theorize it, it's just a matter of time before we use AR type systems in everyday life, currently IIRC, the largest hold back is the transparency screen tech.
But, once we resolve that, establishing transparent "headsets" it will become what amounts to digital sunglasses, allow us to interface all the systems our phones can provide, which, while will include a great many other things, it will also involve games.
I would almost wager a bet that AR Pokémon will be one of the first games to be made.
My Guess also would be, with the rise of e-sports, VR however will, in time become more a direct gaming platform, and as opposed to watching football games were real people play in a real arena, we will watch Influences and streamers playing in virtual battleground on VR.
I can also see things like the Meta-dome, or whatever the fuck it was, starting up, once it is not some cluster fuck of a money grab, I could see something like Second Life, or Entopia, also becoming a contender, if they update to a more modern system and graphics.
All things aside, I really believe that MMO's/MOBA/FPS arena like games will become the largest playground of VR type gaming.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
Give it a couple years and some other tech will come to the forefront, and the Oculus will be $5 at the local thrift store.
At the rate Zuckerfuck is burning money, investors, and user goodwill, it won't take years.
Idk... it seems to be doing pretty well as a whole. Niche, perhaps, but at one point all of computer gaming was. I'm not going to make any grand predictions about it, but it's great for what it is; I use it for less than 10% of the time I game, but each time I do it hits this strange spot that nothing else does.

Plenty of articles the last few days, including ones pointing out even Meta employees won't login to it and how even the simple addition of avatar legs was actually a motion captured lie. Oculus Quest 2's are being dumped on an average of 6 months after purchase. Facebook and Instagram are both hemorrhaging users. Zuck has even fired the team responsible for telling him when something is a bad idea because feels bad, man, while also getting ready to lay off more "lazy" workers. And we won't even mention he's dragged the company, and his own, value down 50% in just a few months and it's still dropping. Seriously, you should check the net. Meta is a clusterzuck of an epic trainwreck.
Right... so... regardless of what you think of Meta, much less its flagship app, neither of these equal VR as a whole. It could very well be that "Horizon Worlds" which... I honestly hadn't heard about before just now, is simply "too buggy" like it says in the Verge. Could it be that there is an alternative product that is much more polished and preferable like, idk... VR Chat? Whenever I use this it seems fairly well populated and intuitive. I don't know all the ins and outs of Zuckerberg's business model, but alternative products are usually a pretty big consideration.
Interesting bit on the Quest 2; I've had mine for about six months and still use it. I'm not saying you're wrong, and I've been a VR user for... probably longer than the average Quest owner (since the 2016 GearVR days), but... I'm not really sure whether to interpret that as "good" or "bad"; how does it compare to, say, console owners?

About the point that Meta has problems with falling value, well thats not really related to VR as such.
The problem of the company formerly known as Facebook is that Facebook fails, not so much that the Metaverse is a stillbirth.
Personally I dont see any value in either. Facebook offers no unique service whatsoever and makes it money from violating the privacy of its users. While I am no fan of the advertisement model that other sites like YouTube or Google use, its still nicer. And, again, there is no point why anyone would need to use Facebook, other than a certain monopoly.
And I dont see any additional value in the Metaverse whatsoever, thats just an attempt to gain a new Monopoly after the old one clearly started failing.
There's nothing more important to an MMORPG than the ability to feel like you are an unique character in an emergent and socially engaging game world. VR will always do this best.
VR will improve the social aspects that people find lacking today because people will be much more inclined to seek others out.
VR will improve the one dimensional gameplay style that many MMOs have today since you will have to pay more attention.
VR will improve the escapism/immersion aspect and you'll be able to live basically a second life if you want to.
VR will improve your character/individualism by allowing you to express yourself much more and give you much greater agency in the world.
I expect that in the 2030s, VR will dominant MMOs and the idea of playing such games on a monitor will be laughably archaic and passed off as retrogaming. Obviously by that point all the current issues of VR will be fixed and no I'm not talking about some silly Matrix brain interface because that's fantasy, I'm talking about headsets like out of the movie Ready Player One.

Not gonna happen. If a game is to immersive, then no one will play it. People will not walk 20 minutes from one town to the next with a helmet on. No one wants to play a game that makes them physically exhausted. you're trying to outsmart a situation, not go to a gym. Nintendo wii proved why this should never happen. except the fact that some sandboxes should exist for as long as they can to see how it grows and why people left for a while. fix what broke it. stop making us move like were military soldiers and stationed at the next war. let us live in our home, whether it be uo, eq or wow. no one wants to risk going blind either. i want to get my red hat and my red ball and go outside.

C'mon, it's a gimmick. It's nots gimmicky as it was last time they tried to push virtual reality, and there's lots of potential, but in the end it's uncomfortable, mildly nauseating and restrictive.
I have a decent enough PC, apparently it is good enough to use VR on, but i do not, simple reason really, there isn't a single VR option out there currently that meets my minimum requirements, its over priced garbage presently, if at some point in the future there is a decent VR option then maybe, but honestly, i do not expect to live that long so the reality is that VR is a 'not in my lifetime' technology.
