At least the poor saps who have to work on this dumpster fire (and can't get a job at a studio that actually ships products) still can get a paycheck. Granted, the majority of the incoming "more-money-than-brains" funds coming in go to the Roberts clan, but still, poor saps are still employed.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.
I feel bad for the original backers, but anyone continuing to dump money into this one is an example of natural selection at work, and will deserve what they get (gaming's most expensive minimum "viable" product.)
From what I understand the company is a toxic environment so "not so much."
According to rumor, the company collapsed back in 2015, then 2016,2017... All glassdoor review of said ex-employees have been proven fake... the community is great.
You have been deeply misinformed
Amazing people still are so blind to donate money and buy ships that will never fly anywhere.
I wont pay 1 cent
+70 so called concept ships (you guys name jpeg)... flyables inside a system with several planets, moons, asteroid field, stations, caves... prison.
That the new definition of 'never' and 'anywhere'
Im a backer pledging just the base package. The game is not coming out in 2021, its not...unless they decide to launch an MVP. SQ42 think was going beta last year and got pushed back to Q3 2020. And that will most likely be delayed again, having a possible release date later on 2021 most likely.
Once they release SQ42 then they will release Star Citizen. So you can expect the game in 2022 or 2023 if there arent more delays. But tbh the game keeps expanding its scope so unless its in MVP as i i wrote before the game wont come out until at least 2025.
The higher numbers you saw included the pre-launch marketing costs, which were substantial. So, total cost to launch swtor was somewhere between 250 and 350 million depending on which source you want to believe. Also, SWTOR wasn't / isn't an MMO (can't help myself, it still pisses me off!)
On topic....
I had pretty much written off SC a long time ago, simply because it was crowd funded. However, my friend paid enough to get into some of the testing ages ago and he says the fundamentals of flying your space ship is actually really good (he has full hotas, vr, cockpit chair etc) and more engaging than elite. It's just the rest of the game that is a bit patchy. So, that's gotten me interested in playing.....if it ever releases......and the business model is any good.
I think my biggest fear for this game (outside of if it'll ever release) is whether a new player will actually be able to get into it or not. All I ever read is ever more features being added to the game. Is it actually going to be accessible to the average gamer?
For example, Elite: Dangerous seems to have about half of the features - or less - than SC and yet it's a nightmare to get into it. There's a few tutorials, which you will never remember 100% of, and then thats it, dumped in the galaxy. If you try to do the obvious things (combat, exploring) chances are you'll be dead very quickly.
I've put 100hours + into ED and still don't understand half the shit in the game.
If SC ends up being similar, or even more complicated, then chances are most players will be turned off very quickly and the target market will be limited to the players who funded the development.....who've already paid for the game. Making sandboxes accessible has always been a massive challenge and I don't think anyone has really managed it before. If SC doesn't, then it'll suffer the same fate as all the others.

"A [as in one] system?" Weren't there supposed to be multiple star systems? If it's taken them this long to produce one, what's the ETA on the remainder? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I genuinely would like to know what backers think about this.

its a dream, a con artist dream, but is still a dream
Pretty sure it was the Star Wars MMO, also roughly 300 million. I'm sure they'll top that, though, by the time the game comes out in 3021.
OK that was the one I had in mind but didn't realize it even got over 200 million.
