no, did you read their statement at all?
Blizzard wed like to make it clear that the scan does not review or retrieve anything thats personally identifiable.
Blizzard If the scan alerts us that hacking is taking place, we take action against the account, basically cutting off the access of that account to the game. Note that we have absolutely no need for any personal information from the players machine to take that action.
Blizzard That is, we can completely do our job and shut down a cheaters account without gathering any personal data from his or her computer.
Blizzard Again, we have no use or desire for any personally identifying information that a player may have on his or her computer, and this particular security measure we have in place for World of Warcraft does not look at any such information on a players computer.
They just look for processes that do something with World of Warcraft while running it.
And to all that are only going to play online games that don't have measures like this good luck to you. They are practicly non existant. A other thing that I don't understand is why people make such a fuss about being monitored in games, hell you are watched all the time irl. Video cameras, Cia, fbi, credit card tracks every single step you are taking. Somebody always knows what you are doing. Specially in countries that have had terror attacks. Usa and Uk are prime examples.
Yeah some people take a bit of gossip and run with it with out hearing any facts first and defend their position vehemently my guess is so that the don't seem wrong. You can see some of them on this post. I love the people that just want a littile more information or take a wait and see approach before before draping themselves with the American flag and crying foul. They make it worth while

I have a tendency to agree.
Cheaters do more to ruin a game than most developers, and that says a lot.
Under normal circumstances I just wouldn't care if they crawled off and died, and I really don't care about their rights being violated. In my opinion, they sacrifice those rights through their own actions.
From what I am reading on some of these hack sites though, what Blizzard is doing is not stopping them from cheating. Those that it did stop have been corrected within 48 hours anyway, and are running again.
So again, what was the point of scanning everyone's computers?
I think it's a popular assumption that those taking part in the cheating are the ones griping the loudest. Maybe, but I just don't see it in this case if they aren't being caught anyway lol.

okay.. Hackers exploit weaknesses in a security system to gain access to a machine. are people that are using 3rd party cheat programs hackers by definition? no. they are cheaters. but they are using the same techniqes to cheat in WoW.
Scanning your game directory folder, running processes, RAM is just one line of defense. thats one way that the cheaters cannot get in through. now even tho they have found a way to get around the scans doesnt mean that Blizzard should give up the scans all together and focus on the new way that cheaters are gaining access.. you don't give up one line of defense to make another defense stronger.. you keep that one up.. and build another.. and another.. and another. it's an on going battle. and really anyone that is determined to cheat will be successfull eventually.. atleast until the developers catch on to their trick.
point being if they drop scanning and focus on what cheaters are doing to get around the scans now. then the cheaters will just resort back to what they were doing to be able to cheat before scanning started.
the thing that gets me about everyone huffing and puffing about illegal search and seizure is
1. it's not illegal when you consent to it
a. you get searched before you enter a venue for a concert. you consent to it if you wish to enter
b. you get searched before you get on a commercial airplane. you consent to it if you wish to take the flight
now while that may just be on you physically to protect the lives of other people.. in sence it's the same thing here. only they are protecting their customers that play the game fairly from people that wish to gain an unfair advantage over you. not as life endangering as terrorism. but security in any form is still important. also i've heard people on WoW forums say that Blizzard should fix the server side code to not allow any kind of abnormal code in the game. well the simple fact is that no system is 100% secure. they could do that, but cheaters would still find a way to cheat. it wouldnt make much sense after all to just put it in their TOS that you cannot cheat, and not activley try and search out for pepole that are in fact cheating.. would it? would it make sense for the government to say "you cannot murder anyone" in a law, and then not go after people that actually commit the crime? sure you can't scan people to see if they're planning on killing someone.. well in some cases they can.. but in this case blizzard can stop them from cheating this way before they actually cheat. bravo in my oppinion
2. the TOS is a contractual agreement that you accepted before you started playing the game.
before doing anything in this country or most other places you usually have to agree to some kind of agreement. buy something at a store and you agree to an agreement usually posted all over their store about their return policy if you wish to return what you bought. open a banking account and you must agree to their terms.. like you may not withdraw X amount of money.. or X amount of money must be in your account or else it's closed.. and so on. contracts are there not only to secure your rights within the agreement with the company or person, but are there to protect the company or persons rights in the document as well. Unless you can find a loophole in the agreement your bound by it. the beauty thing about MMO agreements are that they can be canceled at anytime by you if you wish not to agree to it anymore. without penalty. Blizzard forces no one to play their game. but if you Choose to play then you must agree to the contract that they ask that you sign. now on the subject if the items in the contract are legal or not.. that is true.. you obviously have something if the contract said that you must kill one person a year or do something else that is illegal.. or that they can do something that is illegal. but this. what blizzard is doing is not illegal. if it were Microsoft, and any other company that uses the same systems of property security would have gone belly up by now.
3. I understand your concerns with people looking through your computer
but Blizzard isnt looking through your computer. the program run within the WoW.exe looks through parts of your computer that could be used for cheating, or has evidence of cheating taking place. then if evidence if found a notice is sent back to blizzard that cheating is indeed taking place so blizzard can shut down your account. as they have said no information of any kind is sent back to them except a notice if your cheating or not. it's the same kind of system that i have experience working with, and can tell you for a fact that thats how it works.. look around the cheating forums and pages and they will say the same thing after taking a look at the system. you have more to fear from going to a simple webpage that actually collects peronal information from your computer everytime you visit, to spyware that logs your every action. to the RIAA that if they are successfull can scan your entire hard drive or drives without your consent or knowlege for stolen copyrighted material. it wouldnt even matter if you downloaded any copyrighted material in the first place.. they could do it randomly. all they would have to do is leave a note at your states attourney general's office saying what they did. and if they are successfull in being allowed to do it.. it will be completley legal.
4. about the collecting of demographic information by blizzard that people decided to complain about after blizzard shut up all of the scanning complainers on their board.
for a computer game company demographic information is usually hardware type, OS used, type of connection, your geographic location. used to see what hardware is more popular among their customers, how fast their customers can connect to the internet (used in some cases to improve client side lag if they can), and geographic location to see what parts of the world the game is popular in. TV networks have been doing this for decades. software and hardware companies have been doing this since basically the first personal computers. it's only good business to know who your customers are, and what they like. would you rather want a blizzard rep to come to your house, sit down, and ask you a ton of questions to get to know you?
in conclusion. Blizzard is not snooping around your computer for whatever they like. they have told you that they are looking for two specific programs in specfic locations that could lead to a breach of their security systems in place. they are not collecting personal information from your computer because nothing is being sent to them except a notice saying if you are cheating or not. your pr0n, and pirated mp3 collection is safe.. atleast from them.. heh

Holy crap let me fax this document to my lawyer to decipher. Ok done. I have to agree with master shakes, they do this for your own good. I find this thread more than likely to be a troll against the blockbuster that is WoW.
In this case only, don't hate the game, hate the playa.
You don't have to let them scan your system. Just click the "Decline" button or whatever it is when you see the EULA/TOS and there you have it. They can't scan your system because you're not playing.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
You agreed to let them scan your computer when you installed the game, so there's no legal action you can take. Go ahead and stop playing their games if you don't like it, but there's nothing you can do about it.
Hopefully I quited before this trash of scanning come out. Good luck for you that still play the game. There's only one way for me to come back, no fees. I'll pay for an expansion, I'll pay for notory new content, but I'll never pay again a fee to play any online game. The right thing to do is to charge for expansions... minor patchs/minor fixes/minor addons dont worth a month fee... ANY GAME!!!. Enough said. Cheers

Originally posted by toria would that be then, if that is the case of them scanning the drives, i found a log file, on my desktop,. after i played WoW..
that has nothing to do with the hack/cheat scanning. That log file appearing on the desktop is a small bug from last patch. It's supposed to be saved in you main wow folder. It's a couple of logs the game makes to see that everything has loaded correctly. And for mod makers to see if their mods load correctly and so on.
to all those thinking blizz is invading privacy they are not they are within their legal rights. u signed the agreemant if you didnt read it thats your fault not theirs. also none of your personal info is going to them. the reason they do this is to protect everyone that plays the game by finding hackers and cheaters that may have a program that gives them a unfair advantage. if you dont want ur comp scanned click on decline, unistall, and play a console game
im not over powered! look it took me 10 minutes to kill that guy

that would be a logical route to go for us the players.. it would force development companies to foucs on quality instead of quanity. if they get all of their income through box sales and not from monthly subscriptions it would be in the companies best intrest to release quality expansions so people would buy them. unfortunetly these companies.. like every other company is in this business to make money. and the most logical route for them to do that is to make an MMO with a long grind that keeps us in the game for a few months to a year or more. and take monthly fee's along with box sales. don't get me wrong. i love WoW and think it's a beautiful game. it has it's low points and bad grades. but in this genre you have to go with what you think is the lesser of the many evils. whatever game you think you will get your money's worth and enjoyment out of the best you should go for no matter what anyone else tells you is fun. take me for example. I love quests and pve. I pvp sometimes, but not often. after i left SWG i had friends pulling me in both directions to WoW and Guild Wars. the Guild Wars people's main point was that there wasnt a monthly subscription. but with the lack of things to do other than simple missions and PVP it didnt sound like a game that i would enjoy. So i chose WoW for it's far greater amount of content, RPing ability (sorry i just have a thing for drunken drawfs), the fact that not every area outside of towns are instanced.. ( i like knowing that i'm not alone when i'm out in the world), and a number of my friends from SWG were already in WoW eliminating the need for me to find new friends. sure it has lag (what game hasnt).. sure it's devs can sometime seem that they have hampsters running on treadmills in their heads (what game devs don't?). and yeah some of the community are ignorant 12 year old kids that piss and moan because they can't pwn everyone.. or are 12 year old kids trapped in adult bodies. but for me the positive in the game far outwieghs the negitive. but thats MMO gaming.. it's like buying a car. more than likley your going to want to be playing it for a while. so might as well choose wisely and pick one that you'll be happy with. atleast until the new model comes out.

This is a bit off topic but, have fun playing on crappily maintained servers then. If you aren't ever gonna pay a monthly fee again then you're not gonna play any MMMORPG worth playing more than a week or two, period.

( i like knowing that i'm not alone when i'm out in the world), and a number of my friends from SWG were already in WoW eliminating the need for me to find new friends. sure it has lag (what game hasnt).. sure it's devs can sometime seem that they have hampsters running on treadmills in their heads (what game devs don't?). and yeah some of the community are ignorant 12 year old kids that piss and moan because they can't pwn everyone.. or are 12 year old kids trapped in adult bodies. but for me the positive in the game far outwieghs the negitive. but thats MMO gaming.. it's like buying a car. more than likley your going to want to be playing it for a while. so might as well choose wisely and pick one that you'll be happy with. atleast until the new model comes out.
while i agree with ur post it has nothing to do with the topic u might want to read it before you post I was replying to Cr7pt0r's post nubcakes. come back when your a mod, and can tell me what to post and where to post it.
i was simply saying how you were talking about game mechanics in a post about blizz scanning comps and yet u take it offesively for what reason i dont know, also i wasnt telling you to post anywhere again i was just pointing out that ur posting in the wrong topic
i take it offensively because just two posts into this forum you come on and say "no you can't talk about that on this thread".. is like me joining a debate team and in the first meeting telling someone that they can't talk about whatever they are talking about now until a later debate. like i said. when you become a mod and can decide whether or not a post should be in a certian topic you are more than welcome to delete it from the thread. I know what this topic is about. i've posted over 15 times in it. the subject has been beaten to death already, and those involved in the topic up to about an hour ago seem pretty much content with what has been discussed.. of course you have the people that don't read the entire thread that come on and restart the discussion by posting what has already been posted 70 times now. so what if it's off topic.. it's a discussion board, and we're discussing. i didnt really see the need, or logic to create a new thread to reply to a post that i was intrested in replying to just to please everyone that gets a mayfly up their arse everytime a post doesnt 100% conform to the topic that has already been discussed to death. thank you for your time, and please come again
To stay on topic I'm glad Blizzard is doing something to combat Hackers and Cheaters. Keeps the game fair and fun for the other 99% of us fair gamers. And what's the deal with you people accusing Blizard of spying in on your personal info? You actually think you're so interesting that a major company like Blizzard cares about what sites you visit or where you live?
Originally posted by Cr7pt0r Hopefully I quited before this trash of scanning come out. Cheers
that would be a logical route to go for us the players.. it would force development companies to foucs on quality instead of quanity. if they get all of their income through box sales and not from montly subscriptions it would be in the companies best intrest to release quality expansions so people would buy them. unfortunetly these companies.. like every other company is in this business to make money. and the most logical route for them to do that is to make an MMO with a long grind that keeps us in the game for a few months to a year or more. and take monthly fee's along with box sales. don't get me wrong. i love WoW and think it's a beautiful game. it has it's low points and bad grades. but in this genre you have to go with what you think is the lesser of the many evils. whatever game you think you will get your money's worth and enjoyment out of the best you should go for no matter what anyone else tells you is fun. take me for example. Odds are peoples doing reprehensive stuff are afraid...or folks that see their liberty jeopardize with recents security stuff are over reacting on this.
Honestly, unless you have illegal stuff on your computer, and I dont mean a "free version" of Microsoft Windows, I mean something really nasty...there is little reason to be afraid. Many peoples would just stop buying computer rather then pay a new Windows...and Microsoft is well aware of this fact (no matter how much they argue, they know that less computers = less pull on others to buy computers, having 50% customers of 50 millions that buy Windows is much better then having 100% of 20 millions...especially for a multi-corp like Microsoft, since they have share in many computers...and many others products folks may buy). Unless you have highly illegal stuff on your computer, in which case the FBI could be on your track anyway, and guess what, the FBI have the right to scan your computer while your on Internet...if the FBI order Blizzard to give them their code to scan your computer, Blizzard have no choice but to comply or leave the USA...I am pretty sure they will give full access to the FBI or even do the research for them on free time.
This is an example of why Canadian governmental agencies dont accept to deal with American companies, they want companies that will say no to the FBI and tell those agents to go talk with the appropriate governments if they want some info...in all honesty, small companies in Canada cant complain, it mean American companies cant hope to get a contract, because they have to obey to American laws and this is unacceptable for Canadian governmental agencies...In turn American companies open Canadian smaller companies which are completely independants except for profits, which return in the USA...so those small Canadian subdivision have to abide by Canadian Laws and would refuse any request from the FBI, telling them to pass throught the canadian police forces...which is a key factor to get contracts from canadian governmental agencies. I dont know if the local companies have to give private information concerning foreigners to our local polices forces...I suppose they have to...but I dont know from this perspective, but I assume American governmental agencies would refuse any non-American company for the same reason, to make sure they dont give the info to "foreigns polices forces".

And Wepps is a troll

It should be thrown with great force"
no, did you read their statement at all?

Lol, given that most of the players are males between the ages of 15 and 35, I don't think thet really have to scan your hard drive to figure that out
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
You agreed to let them scan your computer when you installed the game, so there's no legal action you can take. Go ahead and stop playing their games if you don't like it, but there's nothing you can do about it.
Cheers

that has nothing to do with the hack/cheat scanning. That log file appearing on the desktop is a small bug from last patch. It's supposed to be saved in you main wow folder. It's a couple of logs the game makes to see that everything has loaded correctly. And for mod makers to see if their mods load correctly and so on.
