if the system was not design to make money and cause players inconvenience an incentive to pay, why even event it? vs the standard old ways of just unlocking it as part of the game.
star war battlefront 2 you could " earn everything " realistically how long before the backlash would it take? was told weeks of non stop playing most people burn out long before then, so they spend money and people then bitch their supporting the $$$ broken system because they did not want sit and grind vs playing their game.
games don't need be $70+, games don't need endless $$$ ways to make them money, if that money did not go into Ceo pockets and went to paying developers more and making better games? sure, i would agree but when i see CEO making millions then lay off employs while they also make low wages, i lose interest real on quick on the " wow what great deal, paying only X for this dlc / lootbox / preorder / remaster. " but it your money so enjoy.
Well, at least they aren't a random chance from a box, right?
And right there you see how far gaming has fallen, being glad that they are going to cane us for money but not as much as they could have caned us.
Loot boxes are far far worse than this. (Addicted) People have wasted hundreds if not thousands of dollars on loot boxes trying to get what they want.
If they going to nickle and dime us, which is the sad reality of gaming today (I agree), then this battle pass system is the right direction to go IMHO.
You still have to play to unlock all the tiers within said battle pass. So its basically paid DLC as a way to look at it.
I blame Chris Roberts (only half joking) but he has invented ways to monetize everything and then when people complain the SAME excuse 'you can earn it all in game you dont have to buy it' nonsense from white knights and paid advocates.
Inthe end this is at least a fleshed out finished GAME, not a tech demo 10+ years in thats full of broken promises and crushed dreams.
Still doesnt make it right but gaming has now become a game (no pun) of perception as long as youre even SLIGHTLY better than the other guy youre OK. It like the old joke if youre running from something that wants to eat you you dont have to be the fastest just faster than the other guy thats goign to get eaten.

It may be more in the right direction, that's why I talked about people in my first post being happy they cane us for money because they have not caned us as much as they could have. That's a sad place to be, happy to get shafted a little.
As Aeander mentioned they keep coming up with new walls, payment elements and so on. If anyone thinks that's it, this is where the game's payment model will stand at launch, that's just wishful thinking.
This game has just managed to continuously poison it's own well with Spiderman exclusivity, mobile carrier skins, 5 gum promotions, and all sorts of other tacky bullshit.
I enjoyed myself during the beta, but this game is trying REALLY hard to make people hate it.
Selling an Avengers game should be the easiest task on earth.
Aeander is as big a Marvel nut as I am, when he starts to question what's going on I get worried.
I think this is less about Marvel and more about being repeatedly burned by games in this "looter" genre.
This is my problem as well. By the time i unlock my favorite hero "just by playing" I've already seen the whole game so i have no reason to see it again with the character I want. It's really not a good design IMO when you get burned before even playing your favorite character.
That isn't really my problem with any of the looter shooters. If the content is fun enough to replay, I'm happy with this process. The same is true of ARPGs.
No, my problem is that with the exceptions of Warframe and the Borderlands franchise, looter shooters have been tiny games. Destiny and Destiny 2 launched with barely any content. Anthem launched with even less. And now Destiny 2 is cutting its already embarassingly small content even further.
Because of Destiny and Anthem, I have to go into literally all looters going forward expecting them to be fun for like 2 weeks tops, then to run out of stuff to do. And Avengers' blatant, cynnical cash grabbing is really coming across as putting the cart miles before the horse, which makes me fear that it will happen again.
Also again, it's at most only $10, one time payment. Each premium battle pass let's you earn back the 1000 credits you spend on it. No time limit. This means you can just keep using those to buy the next pass and so forth.
And how long do you have to grind to get those 1000 credits back? How many players do you think have the time to actually do that?
In beta it was actually pretty quick to unlock the rewards.
