It also depends on what the story is. So you have something labeled a demon dose not make it a demon from Christian influence. Demon that is from the bible, its root/translation comes from the meaning "To appose God". So the demon in WoW do not conflict with the bible. They are not real demons. They are creatures from another realm that want to conquer the universe. Some devs just dont know what the term Demon means.
More like some Christians don't know what demon means. It's not a Christian term, it comes from ancient greek term daímōn that used to mean different lesser deities and spirits before someone used it when translating Bible.
My take is that if people are THAT religious, they are likely not playing video games.
Maybe in some cases, if you talking cult like religious zealots, but folks who are part of a religion do in fact play MMOs; and mostly together. I've seen plenty of faith type guilds in MMOs.
Demons, Necromancers and co aside, I have a question for you people:
Do godless, brutal, super egoistical things like your typical Sith or like Game of Thrones bother you? How far is too far for you? Does hurting others and others disliking you play a factor in this for you?
My take is that if people are THAT religious, they are likely not playing video games.
I don't know; there was a Christian based guild in LOTRO many years ago and I think there was one in DDO too where they all played Paladin's and Cleric's.

Nope doesn't bother me at all in a fictional sense. Real brutal, super egotistical people DO bother me.
If the game is a bit "brutal" then I take it by a case by case basis.
So, for example, in movies, I have no problems watching gory movies like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on elm street because it's over the top. I'm not really interested in gore but it's not an issue.
However, movies where torture is a main focus or real life violence like mafia movies, bother me and I just don't watch them.
Over the top ridiculous depictions are a non issue. I actually like the game Agony, even with some of its flaws, and it's "hell" so of course things will be horrible. Non-issue.
But I would never play a Grand Theft Auto.

Splitting hairs. All I care about concerning the decisions I make is the meaning used in the bible. People can figure out what definition that fits their faith.
Doesn't bother me at all as it's just a game. No different than playing the Axis side in the Axis & Allies board game.
I have known players that try to play things 'right / lawful', be it in SWToR or in the SPG Drakensang: The Dark Eye where he wasn't going to pick pockets or bust up barrels for loot as that wasn't 'nice' behavior.
It's a game and you should be able to play how you want.

Thank you. Could you be a brutal, cold blooded asshole nobody likes in an RPG?
I'm an atheist, so demons and their like do not bother me at all.
That said, I prefer my games to be vibrant and colourful, happy places to explore. Demons tend to be found in pretty dark, gloomy places, so I'll avoid those regions if at all possible, just because it isn't fun to hang around there.
[nb nearly went off on a rant about religion, but stopped myself!]
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
Well, I was religious, lol. The priest used to tell me that there are people who were possessed playing games like dungeons and dragons, but yeah if you are extreme fanatics you probably won't be playing games with witches, warlocks, or demons. the closest thing to a game for them is bible story(if they are Christian). A more moderate religious people won't care they will play any game.
My take is that if people are THAT religious, they are likely not playing video games.

Tolkien was a Christin and was friends with Don C.S. Lewis author of The Chronicles of Narnia. Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings to teach the principles of Christianity without doing it as bluntly done in Chronicles of Narnia. The two of them used to debate what was the best way to do that.

Well, there is something magnetic to places like Innistrad to me. Even if I don't prefer that atmosphere at all. I just find (gothic) aesthetic in such settings cool.
I'm more of a Pirates, Guardians, Ragnarok, Ixalan type of guy. Serious business wrapped in very colorful silk. Fun, but meaningful experiences. SWTOR Smuggler, for another example.

yes. And by that I mean no. But yes.
It depends on the context.
In Skyrim, when I was a vampire Lord, I decimated Dragon Bridge. fyi, the game doesn't like it when you decimate dragon bridge and doens't send new people. Not even new guards. no attention to detail by Bethesda in that regard.
I was also able to play an evil Sorcerer in Balder's gate as well as an Assassin in Oblivion and Skyrim.
I tried Overlord but it was too silly.
However, I couldn't play a cold blooded asshole in a game like GTA. Too real. When it starts getting "too real" that's where I draw the line.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Thank you. I was playing SWTOR as a Smuggler(and Sith Warrior) and I had to remake those characters. Smuggler turned out to be a very cold, don Corleone type of character that everyone disliked and War ended up...man that was brutal! Couldn't stand all the betrayals and killings. I even became shocked and somewhat afraid of my Jedi Knight, that was one "for the greater good" nut and a half! But at least the results were VERY memorable and positive.
I can't play characters like that. I can go against grain, be an anti-hero etc, but that? That was too much, was a time for /reroll.
I'm a humanist of the atheist persuasion although I was once a catholic and spent 11 years in catholic schools.
In WOW it's not the Warlocks or Demon Hunters that turn me off because to me they're just fantasy based on fantasy. OTOH I do have a problem with Paladins because of the historical context of armored medieval inquisitors.
And don't get me started about lolis in other games.

As others have said, I am more taken aback by Trolls, gankers, and assholes then I ever would be by some fantasy class that gets their power from game based lore demonic sources.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

Yes. I've played many Star Wars games. I have yet to play a Sith of any kind. It's not a "religious thing" for me, just a difference in what I find fun and enjoyable to play for entertainment.
Game of Thrones would be interesting. I can see me as part of the "Wolves of the North", as they were more honest and trustworthy to me. I couldn't play as a Lannister or Targaryean(sp).
Basically, I'm a "good guy" that has fun helping others. Being a dick and an asshole has no amount of "fun" for me personally

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Whether I am for or against having demons in a game has mostly to do with what they drop.
Pieces of babies OK?

Demons and polytheistic gods and rogues and assassins dont bother me at all, it is a game, it is for fun and this life we live is so boring i want some demons and magic in my life.
But i wont lie, cheat, or steal in a game, always keep my word, i think if you are with other people in a gamw then how you play matters.
On a side note: i have no problems pking in games as long as it is part of the game, i have done it in the past, i used to backstab in my 20's but would never do it now.
A person could lend me an item worth $10,000 usd in entropia and id give it back. When people in entropia screw up their math, some guy wanted to buy something off me but ended up screwing up his math by a factor of 10, i told him the truth about what his math should have been and he gave me a tip.

They raged when the first Harry Potter books came out (teaching/glorifying witchraft to kids... yet ignoring imagination and the values).
I completely disagree with this black and white dogma...
That said, yeah I play casters... I do tend to play on the "good side" factions"... usually they need more players and it's my RP preference.
With Angel's, Demons, the antichrist... etc.
