Demons, Necromancers and co aside, I have a question for you people:
Do godless, brutal, super egoistical things like your typical Sith or like Game of Thrones bother you? How far is too far for you? Does hurting others and others disliking you play a factor in this for you?
Yes. I've played many Star Wars games. I have yet to play a Sith of any kind. It's not a "religious thing" for me, just a difference in what I find fun and enjoyable to play for entertainment.
Game of Thrones would be interesting. I can see me as part of the "Wolves of the North", as they were more honest and trustworthy to me. I couldn't play as a Lannister or Targaryean(sp).
Basically, I'm a "good guy" that has fun helping others. Being a dick and an asshole has no amount of "fun" for me personally
And I'd prefer to be Han Solo or Flynn Rider or such characters. Light Side Smuggler. Good natured Rogue. As I describe Smuggler's LS story: Fixin Things. And it's amazing how much things he fixes, all with metric tons of panache. BEAUTIFUL!
I also quite like Ebonheart Pact's pirate story in the beginning of ES:O. But what else is new, me and the smugglers etc. It's possibly one of the best things I experienced in ES:O.
Demons no....spiders though...ya hate em IRL and in games.
I always play hunters/pet classes, and even if spiders were the best i would never use one.
Like others, i doubt someone that was so extremely religious, that the things like demons bothered them, would play games to be bothered by such stuff.
More in games now-a-days to worry religious people about than demon pets. Came across a real porn game on steam.
Recently change the place where you always get the pop up for your age? Well i clicked that to go away and now i see some strange stuff
You can evaluate the advancement of human race by how quickly we abolish all religions.
This is such an odd quote, given that religions have led to many of our scientific advancements.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

More like science has been made despite religion.
Religions tend to come with beliefs that something is already known and can't be wrong (because religion says so), or that something can't be known (because religion says so). Religion rarely advances science, but often hampers it.
EDIT: This doesn't mean I'd think human race could advance by abolishing all religions. Religions can have benefits, but advancing science is not one of them
Can I just say that I love the general tone and civilised responses in this thread? When I opened it I was somewhat afraid to read the replies. Thanks guys

Sorry, we got one that couldn't help themselves... now we're tip toe'ng on forum rules about religion.
I personally don't let any religious views affect my enjoyment of video games. I think the Shin Megami Tensei series have used religious content the best.
On the contrary, if a game gets censored because of it then i will likely not pay for it. Might even get it by other means unless there is an uncensored version.

And what recent advancements have those been?
Religion was needed to get us to a certain point just like many other primitive rituals and beliefs had before religion came along.
But as with all things that are past their use, time to put them aside and move on.
I was trying to be nice and not call you out, why don't you just stay on topic and say something like "I don't have religious beliefs l, so it doesn't affect my GAMEPLAY"... or whatever.
Atheists do have humanistic/secular morals, so you could discuss GAMEPLAY from that perspective too if so inclined.
Nobody is preaching belief or non-belief here. Carry on.

Odd, because the Roman Church was the purveyor of funding scientist all through the middle ages, people like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, got most of their funding through the churches, understanding hereditary traits was discovered by monks. Even raging asshats like Galileo, had their work funded by the very church they mocked.
So, Religion has been a forefront of our development as a society. Not only that, most scientific documents have often been held and protected by the churches in times of war, and Churches have historically functioned as massive libraries as well institutions of of education for their members.
In short, without religion, we would have lost more progress than we ever made.

In a relation to Fantasy Video Games, this is often why Churches are designed to look like fortresses, and often full of catacombs, which, have their own quest hubs and pits into the nether realms of hell.. but that just makes great story.
In any case, Churches were designed to be safe houses for people, in many fantasy video games, often based on european style history, this art design gets carried over with churches being impressive structures and "Religious" classes, like Clerics and Paladins being healers and protectors the people and history.
Often, in fantasy settings you will have other classes like Druids, Shamen, and the like, that are also the protectors and keepers of history, often in other means, like song, chants, etc, as opposed to deep crypts full of scrolls and gateways to other planes.
Always kind of enjoyed the history of where some classes came from, and some of their historical influence. In cases like Paladins, it was not the Crusaders that were used, but in a sense of Irony it was Sir Lancelot, that is often depicted as the paladin of history.
With Lancerlot being a person of pure heart, yet a Knight that serves Honor for the sake of Honor in it's own right, and willing to tell the King to kiss their ass.
This was also why unlike Clerics, in D&D Paladins didn't need to declare a deity, they could serve Honor for the sake of Honor.

For some reason, your description made me have Diablo 2 flashbacks... that was a one of a kind game.
Especially if you played it live when it launched. There were guilds and everything.

The Catholic Church still says the world is 6000 years old and would still say the sun revolves around the earth if they could. Come on man the church still teaches we all came from Adam and Eve.
Hell they got that money by literally selling salvation. Is that what people living through the dark ages needed?
Look Idk what gets you there knitting, kunfu, or the church. Let’s not pretend it is what it isn’t though.
Statements like the one I quoted I believe are part of the reason why I like wicked roles.

My friend, please believe whatever you want to believe. I do not believe your linked wiki did you any favors, I won’t even go into wiki being your source. We have differing opinions on your link and your view on religion. That’s ok.
Will try to get this thread back on course before the moderators wake up today.
While I am a religious person I came to my faith later in life and I am always very conflicted on my beliefs, Thomas would have been a good nickname for me.
Never was one to be concerned about religious connotations in video games however my wife on more than one occasion has questioned why I play such especially fantasy RPGs as she's definitely one who feels they edge too close to the "dark side."
I've never had a problem playing a mage but truth be told I've more often played as a cleric or paladin and rarely as a thief or warlock.
I don't play "evil" characters and I recall quitting SWTOR after finding the storyline of my Sith character too dark for my liking.
I would never play as a demon however, while I never played it I recall a game once made called Angels and Demons (or something like that) and while I would not have avoided it just because of the subject matter, I know for sure which side I'd be playing for.

There's a few MMOs and other games with classes who interact with demons and use them to their advantage. The most obvious example I can think of is warlocks in WoW. Out of curiosity, and without passing judgement one way or the other, does anyone have an aversion to playing these classes because of religious beliefs?

A small group getting lot of wealth and power always creates science and arts as they can focus on more leisurely pursuits instead of mundane concerns. The question is not whether catholic church does any research at all.
It's a question of speed, and Catholic church is a good example how scientific advancement slowed to a crawl for a thousand years when they gained power from the non-religious government at the collapse of Roman empire, and only picked up again once Catholic church started to weaken.
Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
