Because more people voted for ESO? Just like AC: V, people voted for it because they like the game. Don't be surprised when a majority of others don't share your interests. Apex Legends won... again. Does that surprise you too?
Most of those games wouldn't be my choice either, but this is a popularity poll to find out what the majority of people like, not what a few posters think everyone else should like.
Half the comments in this thread make me think there are quite a few people who don't understand how voting works.
Its the same reason Next Island is the 2nd ranked Best MMO on this site , there is an excessive amount of fraudulent accts made for the sole purpose of voting games up ..
If they cared to to get the actual pulse and an accurate read on this community the Poll would be thru this site with members that have 100 post Minimum for starters
Are you saying people made hundreds of fraudulent Google accounts? Because that isn't very easy to do anymore and a lot of effort just to sway an inconsequential fansite gaming poll. I mean do you actually have any proof of your claim? Having proof and evidence is important.
very fast and easy to make dozens of Google accts .. just Google it ..
and ill add .. its not inconsequential, it eqautes to advertising and sales .. There are entire buildings filled with people to do such things ..
JFC. Game developers announced on social media to go vote for their game with a link. All their followers then come here and vote. There’s the big conspiracy. You can all go home now. Goodnight.
I love the MMORPG awards. Every year it's: Lets Vote for the games we all like! As long as you vote for the games we tell you to vote for.
It's just about as legit as some recent elections. In similar fashion to the election comment, then the same few posters come in here to make comments about how they don't really like the games they were forced to vote for and then the other side of the crew shows up to set up their arguments against, either white knighting said games or bashing the people that support said games.
It's truly amazing, like Christmas when I was a kid half my family was Vets the other half hippies and they all got together and got drunk. Like a monkey shit fight at the zoo. Ahh what an awesome childhood.
At any rate the arguments are about nothing, until we decide what the "list" is and then vote for the final outcome, it's just this site manipulating us into thinking there is some sort of content here.
Merry Christmas! Shitters full!
You can write in whatever you want. It's like people who bitch about elections choose to remain uneducated about how it works and their "legal" options.
1. Sign in to your Google account to vote.
2. Write in your choice.
3. It really can't get any more democratic or legit than that.
People bitch because they find out the majority of others don't share their interests and then complain that it's not fair.
Well that sounds all fine and dandy on paper but reality is that if something isn't listed as an option it is EXTRAORDINARILLY unlikely that a write-in would win.
Here for example is a chart showing total percent of write-in votes for US Presidential elections from 1992 to 2012. That is not 12% it is 0.12%
Reality is that if an option isn't clearly listed it's got a near zero percent chance to win unless its some tiny election with 20 people voting or a unique circumstance with a super well known candidate that has a campaign behind it.
Thus I elect not to choose from the poor candidates presented and voice my displeasure. That after all is also the way democracy can work.

Agreed. It's highly unlikely that a write-in will win. I could have written in Howie Hawkins for my presidential choice and it would not be likely that he won the presidency. However, a write-in will rob one of the common options of their vote. If I were going to vote for AC: V but wrote in The Outer Worlds, I don't expect the latter to win. It could be though that AC:V would lose enough votes that another option might have won.
Hatefull's claim is that they could only vote for the list of provided games. That is absolutely not true. They could have written something in. And if they truly cared about a write-in winning they could have opened a thread about the issue and campaigned for all of us to support their write-in choice.
They're complaining afterwards using weasel words like "forced" and questioning legitimacy when it isn't true. It could be better and they should make those appeals for next years "awards".
Maybe next year they should have a Nominations post to actually solicit input and get a better representation of their community. In case you can’t tell, I’m very disappointed that they could not find one single PC RPG to list. To me, that is simply inexcusable. I don’t even have a favorite that I am pining for... I just find a list of purely console games to be ridiculous given the depth of RPGs that appear on PC year after year.

You know, with only 1400 total votes this is exactly the sort of election where a write in vote could pull off an upset, assuming there was an organized campaign to do so.
Can't be compared at all to Presidential Elections where one needs really big money, a large information / disinformation program, solid voter recognition and increasingly in recent years backing of the court system to win.

And that cash shop argument about ESO is pathetic - you can definitely play the game without it, which can't be said for other games like Black Desert.
This generation makes me more sad each new year - they expect AAA games to be free to play without cash shop, without having to fork out a cent, as if developers where people living from love and fresh air and not needing to feed their families like we all do.
Maybe if people would actually read posts instead of assuming the premise.....my complaint is not with the cash shop itself, it is the FACT the ONLY thing in the game that gets regularly updated is the cash shop. No matter what else is wrong you can guarantee they will have some new fking item for sale next week. That is my gripe. Stop working on new things to sell and fix your fking game.
It's not about the cash shop....holy shit read. My point is they are more focused on keeping new items for sale in the cash shop than they are improving the game and fixing things that are wrong. My problem is not the cash shop itself. I should not even have to explain this is, was pretty clear.

Yeah if there was an organized campaign... and I would refute your contention about Presidential comparisons. I bet the same percentage of write in votes were received. People have been trained to click a box. If there were just blank spaces and you had to type in each vote I bet they wouldn’t have had 100 entries.

I strongly suspect they are different departments within the company.
It's not just one group of people who make the decision "well, let's work on the cash shop and put down game development for a while.
I'm sure you MUST know this but you seem like you don't.
I'm guessing they are working on issues but haven't actually solved them yet as they have acknowledged that they are working on things.
They do release all sorts of content. Might not be the content everyone would like but there it is.

I am well aware these are just a popularity polls, which again, makes we wonder why WoW didn't win, when it has more active subs than the population of the other top 3 MMO's combined.
Because WoW didn’t post this poll on Twitter. Most wow players are too busy playing the game. And when they’re not playing, they’re mostly on Icy Veins or Wowhead.
The choices and voting results speak volumes about the level of inadequacy we accept as game players. I played and enjoyed ESO for many years. For the game to win best mmo basically screams this is what is acceptable in this day and age. Even as a fan of the game, and with my limited knowledge, I know the wrong message this sends. Here's your chance to vote and perhaps make a statement about the sad state of affairs we presently experience. Instead the result is the same thing from previous years as we continue (apparently) to be disgruntled with the current mmo market. Congratulations game players, you continue to be hypocritical, sanctimonious, and duplicitous with your complaints about the industry and wonder why things continue as they are. I imagine the gamer players with the capacity for critical thinking doing face palm after face palm.
It's not about the cash shop....holy shit read. My point is they are more focused on keeping new items for sale in the cash shop than they are improving the game and fixing things that are wrong. My problem is not the cash shop itself. I should not even have to explain this is, was pretty clear.
Money goes to what makes money.
This is why I don't like frivolous cash shop items, it's like "We are gonna make our money selling a dress and then just kinda guess what content the players want"
If they made and sold content, like Dungeons, Open World maps and the like, and put the skins/mounts/mini's/loot/etc, In that content, made it all bound to account, that would be the best option.
Players buy the content, they play the content, they earn the rewards, everyone goes home happy.

Another year with the same comments and complaints from many of the same names...
It all boils down to...
- "A game I don't like won"
- "The game I like didn't win"
- "All the games sucked"
- The cynical, catch-all "the winners just prove how bad everything's been (because the game I like didn't win)"
- A very light sprinkling of reasoned, thoughtful comments.
Welp. See ya all next year for more of the same!
Personally, I'm kind of surprised to see ESO take it over WoW. For myself, and others I know who play it, Greymoor has been "more of the same with new scenery"; short (but mostly well-written) storylines, delves, dungeons, world events, motifs.
Antiquities is a new system, but it's really just another grind to keep people chasing shinies, and will quickly become "more of the same" as well.
ESO's current model has become old and predictable. It needs something to shake it up a bit more.
The level scaling hasn't aged well, either. Once you hit the mid CPs, most overland content, and even some dungeons, become easy. Enemies become a nuisance instead of a challenge; speedbumps between you and your destination. Anything short of soloing group content is brainless.
OTOH... Shadowlands seems to be bringing back a lot of folks I know who'd given up on WoW, bringing some significant changes, and they're legitimately excited about it. So, I'm surprised to see the outcome there. No opinion for or against it, though. People like what they like.

ESO vs WOW... preferences I guess. ESO sucks me in more, I go ESO (have a sub).

I am well aware these are just a popularity polls, which again, makes we wonder why WoW didn't win, when it has more active subs than the population of the other top 3 MMO's combined.
Can't be compared at all to Presidential Elections where one needs really big money, a large information / disinformation program, solid voter recognition and increasingly in recent years backing of the court system to win.

Polls, just like elections are won by getting people out to vote for their favorite and not necessarily representative of the will of the entire population.
Which game made more money is what really matters....which probably was one of those new mobile gache games I'm thinking....
