You know I have posted a few "lets try to keep calm guys" over the past couple of weeks and I have just realised why. We have not had a new Western MMO out in years, CF and NW have stirred us up as it where.
I suppose then if I was to frequent Korean forums posters would be exploding all the time as they still have multiple releases each year?
I'm sure the curmudgeons on Korean forums are regularly waxing eloquent that Lineage 1 is the only "true" PVP MMORPG with all newer games being trash played by carebears.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were Korean versions of every "character' here on these forums.

Well thought out game with lots of options for players in many different areas. World is alive and beautiful. Awesome fun with friends!
Agreed. The world is lush and like you mentioned, feels organic and natural. The ability to jump over objects and climb some surfaces feels smooth.
The crafting has me excited. It's detailed but not overly complex. Materials pull from local storage which is a blessing. Both storage and auction trader are local to the town.
I really like how open weapon and skill choices are and not having that defined by a class. The same weapon on two different players can play very differently depending on skill choices. A sword and shield defender will feel and play different than a sword and shield damage dealer.
The action combat is challenging and I like how there isn't a hard tab-target lock. Swings can and do miss, sometimes wildly. Arrows and bullets have weight. There isn't an unlimited magic arrow/bullet supply. Real combat is messy and this feels much more like real combat than typical mmo combat with programmed hotkey sequences.
Some criticisms:
1. Party member icons should always show on the compass. They don't, or I couldn't find a way to make this always happen. It's a problem in town when there are many players nearby, less so out in the wilds.
2. Faction progression perks are a random "pick one of three". It feels haphazard and not very deterministic. Why? Why not just have some sort of skill tree like weapons?
3. Combat animations could be more fluid. That might come at a performance cost though and New World has a strong PvP element.
4. Animal skinning is open loot, meaning anyone can skin the corpse you just killed and they sometimes do. I wish that there was a very short (1 to 2 minute) lock on skinning corpse kills.
Overall, New World is an excellent game and clicks a lot of the things I've wanted to experience in an MMO.
I'll agree, it's not perfect but it's defo good. I love the night tme and the lushness of forest..
We ran to Brightwood last night. It was dark, and the environment was FANTASTIC. Gloomy, foggy with coffins on the side of the rd.

I assume the game doesn't allow you to build your own base/town? I realize it's an MMO but the gameplay seems to want to support features from survival games. Especially since it seems groups are trying to claim land.
I will give it to Amazon. They performed a masterstroke with the marketing PVP/PVE debacle. They have successfully marketed their PVP game to PVE'ers. I haven't seen this done since DAOC.
This game will absolutely crush the "PVP" populations of PVP games out there now, like Albion, Eve, Crowfall, and Mortal Online 2 if it holds onto these PVE'ers. All these Whiney PVP'ers talking how this game was a PVE game now, because it doesn't have full loot or is flagged PVP. Watch how most of those people are going to be playing New World. One thing more important than all those hard core PVP mechanics is "Easy Targets" which New World has tons of.
If New World releases a bunch of PVE content maybe they will be able to hold onto some of them. With no new big PVE MMORPGs coming out I cant tell how long PVE'ers will stay.
Watch next year how PVP players will downplay Crowfall and Mortal Online 2 horrible releases, as they praise New World as the top PVP game of 2021. This will be the go to game to show PVP is still viable in MMO's.
Last night I saw shit tons of flagged players running around solo ganking, as well as in groups besieging holds, camping outposts, running city to city; of all levels. It was funny watching people capping players with rifles from the tops of hills. Lots of ambushes.
PvP is alive and well in this game and If you want it it's easy to find so far. There are PvP missions to keep you busy. Reminds me of the old days of SWG to be honest.

No building of towns although they can gain levels but not sure if and how that changes the town's appearance. Houses in towns (only place you can have a house) are instanced sort of like BDO: when you're inside you can see the town including players outside but they can't see you.
Territory control is all about controlling tax rates, etc. in a zone and giving some extra buffs to the controlling faction in addition to the individual buffs you have from your reputation in the zone.

I think the term for this type of housing is actually fazed.

That's great to hear. I love this kind of implementation for housing.
IDK much about it yet but from what I've read there seem to be a lot of buffs to be had from having trophies and other items in your house so not just cosmetic. I also like that even though I expect, I'll have all my trophies in a pile in the middle of the living room

The difficulty ramp up in New World is pretty brilliant. The starter zone is totally ez-mode and gets the player on their feet.
The early zone mobs can be difficult, but are mostly manageable. As you branch out and explore it can get deadly and mean quickly. I got one-shot last night just by getting too close to a level 25 Corruption Portal (I was level 12). Later I travelled through some zones just a little higher level and nearly got wiped a couple of times. I was able to barely kill the level 19 undead that I aggro'd but it I had to run, kite, and heal a lot to do it. If it had been a fast mob like puma or wolf I'd have been dead.
This isn't your typical open world faceroll, which I was worried about for a bit. It is hard and while groups aren't required, they make everything safer and run more smoothly.
Fishing is an absolute blast and a very fun mini-game. No AFK'ing and macroing the fishing. That's for sure.
I also really like how various gathering and resource processing disciplines are inter-connected. Fishing is relevant in cooking and alchemy. Harvesting iron is useful for nearly every crafting profession except maybe cooking.
I still haven't figured out where to find precious gems yet.
Since respecs are free up until level 20, I switch my attributes over to int + dex and went with fire staff + rapier. I had all light armor but I'm going to mix and match leather and cloth for better survivability. I'm having a blast.
Sometimes while fishing you might get a treasure chest, if lucky. That's the only place I've found gems so far. Not sure if there are ways to harvest them yet; I'm sure there is.
I have gotten some rusty swords which I was able to break down to iron ingots. I found that very useful since finding a fresh iron node can be tricky.
I find tons of Iron and Silver nodes (gems are inside ore nodes), have lots of crystals from them too. I might have a piece of gear that increases the ability to find gems and other stuff by 1%. I read for whatever reason that 1% makes a huge difference. Statistically it shouldn't but maybe it starts enabling it who knows.
This map should get you started on where to find them. Its definitely not all inclusive, I have found many different types of nodes that are not on this map. But I have found that if its on the map, that the spawns are mostly accurate.
Once you get high enough in levels the nodes will start appearing on your hud, and on your in game map.
I’ve been enjoying myself, stayed up till 2:30am last night playing. I want to learn as much as I can before launch. Nice too be gaining interest in an mmo these days instead of losing it.
Here is to hoping for a tame cash shop. The one in game for beta is too good to be true.
My biggest concern is WHY are these people jumping in?Why is it a concern well hype and popularity are a huge motivating factor and can garner a less than average game a lot more money than it deserves. A popular trend can also snowball and have tons more jumping in on a whim. So i wonder how many actuall yresearched this game, had a distinct TYPE of game they were looking for compared to how many are just throwing money blindly at the new "IN GAME ".
if the vast majority are actually looking for a game like this and feel it meets their criteria for quality "if they have any criteria"then great enjoy the game you sought out.I somehow feel the very high majority are jumping in for no reason other than addicted to spending money on every new hyped game that comes out,i call this "foolish spending".
Contrary to a lot of people on this site, the majority of casual gamers actually don't research games and just go for whatever looks fun or different to them. New is always a plus.
You can refund the game after playing the beta, which is what a lot of people that did research the game plan(ned) to do.

I'm finding that, more so than any MMO I've ever played, your own play style with different weapons and which type of armor you choose to wear have a huge influence on solo difficulty.
I'm currently kind of a spazz when it comes to using my pinky on the default "Left Shift" to dodge (I've now rebound that to make space bar my dodge and left shift my jump and that's definitely better for me) or timing blocks so a play style where I kind of do the noob "face tank" shuffle suits me best for now.
It's why I've come to love the Hatchet's Berzerk skill: It gives you a 15 second buff that when enhanced by passives, not only gives you a 20% damage and 25% run speed buff, it also makes you immune to stagger and makes your attacks uninterruptible. On top of that it gives you a HOT for those 15 seconds and clears any de-buff on you when activated.
It's a skill made for standing there and duking it out without "bothering" with the defensive mechanics. The hatchet is more beginner-friendly and forgiving in that way than any other weapon IMO.
I've been spending a lot of my time, checking out all the different weapons, that's actually my main goal in the beta, other than just familiarizing myself with everything else (love the crafting and best fishing ever in an MMO ) and leveled to the same degree which weapon you use can be a critical factor for the difficulty at any given time.
It makes sense since in NW your weapon/armor choices define your "class" and role so some weapons will be more suited to your preferred style you may have brought over from other MMOs.
I do want to pay Fire Staff / Ice Gauntlet as my main spec eventually but for now my solo fight success rate is much, much better with the hatchet. I just need to get good to do the other weapons

Just a tip for those with inventory issues. If you do like 3 or 4 PVP missions, you will have enough faction points (1000) to buy from any of your faction NPC's an item called. Minor Rune of Holding (an ingredient), this will allow you to craft easily a bag/satchel at the outfitting station. You can run the same mission over and over again for easy faction points. Basically go to x spot get some iron ore or get a crate, come back, stuff like that.
This bag will allow you to hold 100 more inventory which helps a lot.
As a side note, around level 20 I also got a quest from the innkeeper that has a reward for a similar satchel. I am not sure if you have to do some pvp missions first to get the quest or not. I am guessing its a PVE way of getting the same item.

The bag I got from questing didn't require me to do any faction missions, but it is less storage than the one you can craft.
I don't know if you had a higher level quest and got a better bag, but I got my bag through questing at around level 12.
ahh, I crafted my bag using the rune (100.6 increase), not sure what the inn keeper quest was for storage. Never completed it.

Whats the PVE quest bag 75?
50.
I also crafted my 100 bag by buying a rune of holding from thei faction shop. I even had a random drop I used in the crafting that reduces skinning mats weight by 6% or so - didn't even know I had that until I clicked the crafting enhancement icon just to check and there it was in my storage shed

I just wish I could program a weapon swap macro to my mouse, but I can't think of a good way to do that. I really hate having to fat finger 1 & 2 quickly.
You don't need a macro. The "Swap Active Weapon" command is unbound by default. You just need to bind it to some unused key and assign one of your mouse buttons that key.
It was one of the first things I did and it works great.
As to dodge I tried it with a mouse button but it just felt awkward for me. I know a lot of people dislike double tapping a directional key to dodge but that's actually my preferred method. I wish that was an option.

PvP isn't always an option so I'm trying out the PvE aspect to see if it's robust enough to hold the game over when PvP is dead.
Maybe it's because the environment is bustling with players that the game seems fun and alive. So far everything is pretty fun.
Territory control is all about controlling tax rates, etc. in a zone and giving some extra buffs to the controlling faction in addition to the individual buffs you have from your reputation in the zone.
EDIT: This is an article from February '20 so I'm not sure what if anything has changed:
