So with the full set revealed, what would you want the next generation (theoretical expansion 4) elites to be?

(And let's assume they still don't give us land spear/tridents, even though that would be awesome and they could probably make so much easy money just by temporarily re-introducing old BL sets with the few new spear/trident skins).

    Personally:

    Warrior - Staff (BONK!)

    Guardian - Rifle

    Revenant - Warhorn

Thief - Mace or Axe (assuming Scepter is condi, if not then Torch)

    Ranger - Rifle

    Engineer - Longbow

    Elementalist - Longbow

    Necromancer - Mace or Hammer

Mesmer - Shortbow, MH pistol, or Warhorn

I want them to add new type of weapons to the game. Anet generally loves to add things in expansions that people hyped and really wanted in the past. The only thing so far that they didn't add is a new race (mostly tengu). This time when people saw the new mesmer elite spec silhouette, most of them, including me, thought it was spear and hyped as fuck. I think Anet can actually take this into considiration for their next expansion and start adding new weapons like spear, great axe etc. It's not hard to do like a new race and would become such a great addition to create hype for a new expansion.
I would come back for scythes, and dervishes, definitely dervishes.

I mean, Revenants basically are modern dervishes - just channeling historical legends rather than gods. You could do a decent job of simulating one with a scythe staff skin and a dervish outfit while playing a Revenant.

    A few things.

I don't get the obsession with spears, overall they suck as weapons. As far as GW2 goes, if they added in new weapons, this means they would need to add in a new Legendary, and then people would cry that there was only 1 legendary of the new weapon, and want there to be as many legendary weapons as the all the original weapons, which is we all know would happen.

I don't think new races will happen either, given how story driven the game is, it might be more trouble than it's worth to have do a whole new story line and arc to add in a new race that fits into the current narrative.

    Okay, a few things:

    1) Spears are literally the main weapon of medieval warfare. They should be a staple of fantasy games in general, and they are quite mechanically different from other weapons.

    2) We already have a legendary spear from the base game. They're only 1 legendary short of other weapon types.

In regards to race and story, they also added a new class that did not exist in the lore of the base game, and yet that did not prevent characters from playing that story. We also know what the Tengu have been doing (fuck all) in regards to the world, so a short story introduction would be deemed acceptable.

The greater challenge in both cases would be retrofitting new skins into old weapon sets, and retrofitting a new race into old armor sets (not that they seem to be good at preventing clipping anyway, as any avid fashion warrior would tell you).

    1) Spears, as in the Pole Arm, which is what you are referring to regarding Medieval Weaponry, is little more than a knife, dagger, or awl, on a 12 foot pole, is only effective when used in stacked formation with a lot of other people, typically a phalanx formation.

Outside that situation, they suck, like, OMG, you may as well break the dagger part off, and try to stab people with that, level suckage.

They pitiful against Shields, They Don't work well against Heavy armor, or even chain. Overall, they are a peasants weapon, and again, only viable when used in large numbers and in formation.

This is pretty much the last weapon some hero would be using.

You would have a million times better chance asking for a Lance, to go with mounts, in a game like GW2, then you would of trying to convince someone that a spear was worth a shit.

As far as I can figure out, the only reason why Spears get any love, is because they have a rather large following among Anime crowed, and those are mainly the marital arts style short spears, called a Qiang Spear, being around the same size as a quarterstaff, and being pretty much nothing more than a quarterstaff with a knife on the end of it, while those are leagues better than the European Pole Arm Spear for actual fighting, the reality check is, they are still.. Just as far as game mechanics would go, just Staff with a Pointy End on it, while deadly AF in real, but, then again, so is a quarterstaff, but if the game already has some kind of staff, the Qiang Spear would be redundant.

    2) That is an Aquatic Spear, better known as a Harpoon Spear, sometimes just called a Harpoon, with GW2, I wager they called that a spear, to remove the confusion from the harpoon gun, but, this weapon is not to be confused with the pole arm spear (That was widely used in Wars in Europe and many other places for most of the Medieval Ages) or a Qiang which is a Quarterstaff with a Pointy End.

For the life of me.. I will not get the obsession by some people, with wanting some awkward ugly ass inefficient Pole Arm in a game.

    3) Classes do not have their own story, each race does. So they could add a million classes and nothing would change for the Sylvari Personal Story. be a Sylvari Pants Shitter or Ass Grabber, makes no difference to the story.

And the Tengu doing "fuck all" is is exactly why it would be hard to explain how and why the hell they became the PACT leader and World Commander! .. don't you think?

On the matter of spears, glaives, and lances, they would essentially all fall into the same category. There would be lance, glaive, etc. skins in the polearm family. Moreover, with comments like "ugly ass inefficient polearm," it's apparent that Ungood is projecting his aesthetic preferences and little more.

Read a novel like the incredible Stormlight Archive series and tell me that the spear fantasy is not valid. Play a franchise like Fire Emblem or Langrisser where lances/spears are one of the main weapon types and tell me they aren't awesome.

Spears never vibed with me, firmly falling into the 'boring' category.

And then I started maining them in Nioh 2, now spears are the most badass weapon ever.

I don't dabble in anime much but Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit is a great watch for spear lovers.

I also don't get the hate for spears, yet love of staffs at the same time.  ??

Battle staves are a different kind of fantasy aesthetic that I am also very much into. Spears/lances evoke the dragoon/soldier aesthetic, whereas staves evoke the monk.

Personally, if I had my choice of a new weapon type, it would be martial/unarmed. I would love to punch things to death.

They are pretty fun in Dark Souls, For Honor, FF14(Dragoons), Monster Hunter and other games. It all depends on how well the developers make the combat using that weapon. I think it could be fun in GW2.

After playing The Icebrood Saga, I wouldn't put it past ANET to add playable unarmed/gauntlet combat in the game since it's already there.

Ideally, because overall, the Pole Arm Spear, is not a good weapon, and yet people fawn over it like it some amazing thing. It's a 12 foot (4 Meters) long pointy stick.

The Qiang Spear, or Martial Arts spear, which is the spear used in most Anime and Asian stories, which is really just a Quarterstaff with a blade on it.

I mean, anyone that has held a Pole Arm spear, would realize that this was not an overall good weapon, and I encourage anyone that has some fantasy of spear fighting, to go pick up one of those 12 foot spear pole arms, and see how it feels.

really just a Quarterstaff with a blade on it.

    So a spear.

Spears are also typically more around the length of 6-8 ft and can be shorter.

I'm not sure why you're so fixated on the 12 footers.

    Lets not make this personal.

But, if you ever want to go spar, I'll be glad to get my RenFair-Armor, Shield, and Mock up of a Longsword so I don't hurt you too much, and allow you your oh so vaunted pole arm spear, and see how many time I will get to beat your ass into the grass before it dawns on you, that, spears suck as a stand alone weapon, and you suck at using one.

    Well...

It's 2021, If Person 1 swings a polearm at Person 2 i'm pretty sure Person 2 will be flexing his second ammendment on that day. No matter how fancy his spear moves are... you know the rest.

No, a Spear, as in the Pole Arm, used though most of Europe, is in fact 12 feet long.

The Qiang Spear, as in the Marital Arts Weapon is 6 feet long.

To really grasp the difference, that would be like someone saying they wanted a Greatsword, and really talking about a Nodachi.

    They are very different weapons.

Equally so, if they have a Staff in the game, they can just put a pretty little blade graphic and call it a spear.. that should be enough right?

Says the person obsessing about not accepting a Staff with a Pointy end as a Spear.

I mean, if reality can suck it, what difference does it make if they give you something, called a staff and make it look like a spear.. it's a spear-enough right?

    Well here is your Spear..

They are pretty fun in Dark Souls, For Honor, FF14(Dragoons), Monster Hunter and other games. It all depends on how well the developers make the combat using that weapon. I think it could be fun in GW2.
    I meant in real life.

Says the person obsessing about not accepting a Staff with a Pointy end as a Spear.

I mean, if reality can suck it, what difference does it make if they give you something, called a staff and make it look like a spear.. it's a spear-enough right?

    Well here is your Spear..

Melee staves are a bludgeoning weapon. Spears are a piercing weapon. This should be obvious.

It does not matter whether your LARPing ass considers spears effective weapons. It matters whether they'd be fun or different weapons, and the answer to both is yes.
