What we are experiencing now and the extremes will change as the only thing that is certain is change itself. I believe in the future this will be another milestone. It's how things develop there is always extremes in everything.

Yeah well things change. New generations come along and have their own ideas. Old farts just overstay their welcome.

It's been a long, long time since any movie studio or game developer thought of me as their target demographic. They're selling to Gen Z now, not you or me.

Well, I think there's a clear difference between some legit concerns (the climate, pollution, etc...) and dangerous liberty killing ideologies. I'm a child of the 80s (born in 1968, so I lived my best years during the 80s) and freedom was way better back then. Nobody was offended by some joke about a minority, actually, a black friend of mine knew the best jokes about blacks. It's over now, you can't laugh about anything even remotely offensive to some minority or another. I find that VERY scary.
Wow. Let me get this straight,  Not being able to tell racist jokes is scary to you?

    Maybe you wrote that wrong.
The thing is, people have ceased to allow themselves to laugh at themselves.

Case in point, If someone tells a Christian Joke, that mocks Christians,  people laugh at it, even Christians, because they have the self security to laugh off these jokes.

The problem arises, not that people cannot tell a racist joke, but when we as people longer possess the self security to laugh off any humor directed at any character of our person, be it race, religion, gender, sex, disability, etc.

I believe something was lost, and it was our ability to take a joke as a joke.

Personally, I blame internet trolls for that one, mainly, because they would fire off barrages of racist/sexist/hurtful insults and personal attacks, and then when called out, they would try to hide behind the like "What, can't take a joke" and slowly, it became a resounding and abrupt "No" in a solid move to silence them, and I feel that is where the whole snowball started, and it's been rather effective.

I wouldn't have seen his post if you hadn't quoted it. Thanks for understanding what I was saying, unlike "bcbully".

A joke about black people, about inhabitants of a country (we have a lot of "Belgian" jokes around here), is not automatically "racist".

That too is part of those liberty killing changes by the way: abusing words like "racism".

A referee here got into trouble with some associations as he had to designate a specific player in a group of players, and he dared to say "the black guy"... which was logical since he was the only black person, but apparently for some "woke" morons this is racist.

I'm not understanding. Again, maybe I'm mis-reading something.

Do you mind giving an example of a joke about black people?

I've seen a lot of people entirely miss the point of this change.. Some thyink it is a woke thing.. others think it is misguided virtue signaling...

    It... Is... About... MONEY.

The people who hold big stock in Blizzard want this entire thing swept under the rug and then want the rug nuked from orbit. The quickest way to do that is to scorch the earth and then never speak of it again. Because we meat popsicles move on to the next crisis and the vultures swoops on in and the entire stockmarket keeps on rolling. They give not a single fuck about your account or the accounts of another 100 angry people.

But to keep the name in could lead to people bringing it up... Could lead to more controversy... Less money.

Does it really matter to anyone if they change the name... No not really.. Well apart from the IRL McCree perhaps... Being forever branded by this... But the thing is, not taking action would cost more money log-term than this does short term... Most people comes back, will come back to OW2 and the rest most likely fit in to the regular churn. If not, they would not have done this.

Because it is all about the money.

Everything for profit companies do is about money. It goes without saying. What makes for interesting conversation is whether or not the actions a company takes will lead to that desired profit or undermine their efforts.

In a subscription based game the company does care about accounts because each active one is money. Changes made they believe may cost them some accounts are done when they feel inaction will result in more accounts lost.

Just saying everything companies do is for money means you really do not understand how complex corporations and their problems are. But it is apparently a fun train to ride on.

One can tell racist jokes, provided that race is white. One can tell sexist jokes, provided that sex is male. Combine the two and the sky's the limit.

Despite being a while male I somehow manage to endure.

What should be scary about blanket restrictions on jokes is that they apply irrespective of the intent and nature of that restricted.

While some jokes about white people are made out of malice and with hostile intent many are not. If one were to apply a blanket restriction on them it would suppress those baneful but also all those meant in good humour.

Whatever social benefit prohibition of these jokes would bring is outweighed by the certain social cost of it being applied as the brush used is overly broad.

Another problem is that people are getting upset about the stuff that they could watch. Problem isn't that your teacher, boss, etc. are joking with you. Problem is that someone somewhere has released a comedy special that I didn't watch, and was never going to watch, but I know it has stuff in it that must make me upset on the behalf of other people so I will try all I can to ruin that and the person behind it.

Alright, well, lets see, I'll lay on you one of the most racist, stereotyping jokes I know, and if you are the kind of sensitive soul that cannot handle such, well. don't read it.

Employee: Boss, Boss, I messed up! Help!
    Manager: What's the problem?
Employee: I messed up the condom order, as opposed to getting Small, Medium, and Large, I got XLarge, XXLarge, and XXXLarge, what do we do?
Manager thinks for a bit "Not a problem, just put them on an end cap, and label it "Black Man's Special"

Alright.. so.. there is a joke.. how did that make you feel?

Personally, I find the largest problem is a lot of "Humor" in our world, is that it is not funny, it is insulting, and not all humor need to be a put down or a mockery, even if it can be racist as all hell.

Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

Sticks and stones mates. Sticks and stones.

Offense is taken never given. You cant offend someone who doesnt offend himself by taking it into themselves. Some people get offended over real hurting grounds that are hard to cope even by the most stoic ones but most of people get offended just for the sake of it. To feel something. Even if its completely selfmade anger from nothing.

Be it to forget their shitty lives and empty heads or to project some previous anger or selfhatred towards another being thus trying to give themselves a free card out of "you reap what you sow".

You cant legislate on "feelings". Thats were things start to go out off hand and the reason why the western world its where it is.

Justice was blind for a reason.
