Amazing to think that after all this time (has it been 8 years now?), it would still take all that just to possibly get the game launched in three years from now.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Either it's too early and the game isn't ready, or it's too late and everyone has lost interest.

Again, I think the most important takeaway from this thread is that MJ seems to have totally withdrawn from the CU community.  His last post was in November and only a handful in the months prior.

That, more than anything is not a good sign.

Or maybe... he's grinding away and will pop up again with a  super-Jesus-patch...
This to me strikes a much more important note than the NDA in fact.

Lets be honest, after dealing with posters like Slapshot for several years, I can fully respect why he would need to take a break from the "Community" as it were.

Also, if MJ secured other funding by other larger backers, perhaps, given how abrasive MJ can be, he might have been told by his new handlers to lay off and let the PR professionals handle the PR part of the job.

As far as the NDA goes, at the end of the day, If there is nothing to gain by changing the contract, there is no motive to change it. Some people are just too daft to grasp that one.

He does not need to engage with anyone and he could ignore anyone who does try to engage with him. All he has to do is a post now and then, you must see how this looks bad?

    Kickstarters are a tricky business.

You need to promote your project like crazy to get the funds, and that promotion has to occur when there really isn't anything to promote - the promotion occurs at the exact moment any marketing person would tell you to hush.  I don't know how you'd keep the community excited and engaged over 8 years of development.
Well here is the thing...  the Kickstarter funding is a small percent of the total funding.  He has done no real "sales" since the Kickstarter other than leave his shop open.

It's certainly a bit unique in the Crowdfunded MMORPG space.

At the end of the day... interest from the backers has fallen off the cliff and with little to no real updates over some concept art or "pathfinding ai" there has been little to draw in new people.

I think the word I used earlier is apt...  apathy.  Most do not feel a strong emotion at all about this title... and that's probably the worst place to be.

I haven't been paying attention in CU that much as of late, kinda fell off my radar a few years back TBH, but, really, as long as someone is saying something, even if it's just some intern giving a paltry updates, that is all that really needs to happen. MJ himself does not need to get directly involved in everything all the time.

I mean if the whole company went silent, yah, that would be a worry.

But, as long as someone is sounding off to you all, that should be enough.

And lets not forget that JW "Caspian" never shut up the whole time he was ripping ya all off, in fact, last I looked, the guy is still spewing the bullshit.. so I would not use "hE nEeDs To TaLk To Us" as a metric of "All is well".

I think he's still doing his monthly stream along with a monthly newsletter, so it's not like he's gone dark.

I just haven't cared enough to follow much other than what I read others have to say on the subreddit.

Actually he skipped the last monthly stream because.. as the stand in said "Mark's really busy".

So maybe he's cooking up that Jesus patch somewhere that will make us Believers again...

The newsletter...  come on.. we all know nobody has opened one in years.
I just opened up the last one (number 86!!! SHEEEZZZ) and from skimming it seems he has left it up to "Kara" to take over the communication of it.

I really hope it's the Jesus patch.. because just capturing half of the old DAoC magic would make it better than most other games I have tried since.

I strongly suspect he's just avoiding any community interaction as he doesn't want to rehash things and doesn't want to deal with community ire.

Also, he doesn't seem to be very adept at speaking with the community. Not a strong point at all.

We have to come to terms with the possibility that he just used CU to earn funds to build his unchained engine. I mean... Ragnarok on Steam is LITERALLY an engine demo...

A person with any intent to create what he'd promised would've been further along with development 7 years in... He doesn't have the excuse of not knowing what to do like these other first time MMO kickstarter projects...

It's a shame that he sullied his name for 1.5 mil but maybe he felt like it was worth it for the cash idk... I've seen Dateline where people do crazy shit for even crazier shit so who knows...

As far as I know, the decision to develop their own engine was only made when commercial engines proved inadequate for CU's unique selling points.

And if they have already decided on their own custom engine, then it is also obvious to make more out of it than just a flash in the pan and immediately mothballed it again straight away.

And no, Ragnarok is not yet a proper engine demo, IMO. It simply lacks key-moments that cannot be achieved with any other engine.

I still read the newsletters because they provide endless source of entertainment. Like the people at CSE posting doctored screenshots of wooden dicks in them: https://imgur.com/a/Y293XNp

    That's a real screenshot from their https://camelotunchained.com/v3/ending-the-year-on-a-fast-note-thursday-december-23rd-2021/

Or like in latest newsletter, where after over 8 years of development, they announced that they finally started to record live sounds of piece of metal hitting another piece of metal:

The newsletters and the fancy webshop where you can spend thousands of dollars at one time.
Their shop is anything but fancy...  Maybe part of the problem.  He never pursued more backer cash seriously.
