So apparently Mark is going to explain what he's really been working on "soon"

Excerpts from his "monthly" email. (emphasis mine)

"Hey everybody! Sorry that this update came in July, not June - best laid plans and all that. I know, you’ve heard that before, but there are a number of reasons for the delay as well as my absence from the livestreams. Hopefully (fingers, toes, and eyes crossed) I can talk about them for the next update or even before that!

Other than that, things are going well: job reqs being added, interviews and hiring ongoing, and yours truly is spending way too much time talking to people about things that are not game design. So, I do apologize for my absence, and I will certainly explain it in excruciating detail the next time I do a livestream."

Probably trying hard to find the money to stave off insolvency is what I'm guessing he's been busy with. (or selling it all off)

Also this closing blurb. (again emphasis mine)

"As per above, I do apologize for my absence in the livestreams lately, but fortunately, I’m still here and working on a number of things for both CU and CSE.

And even more fortunately, nobody is relying on me to write code, make art, etc. CSE has a great team doing all that and while I’m being pulled in other directions, it’s all CSE-related (no health issues or stuff like that), so it’s all for the good."

    Fortunate indeed. ;)

I think all it signals is what many including me thought years ago that crowdfunding doesn't really work for larger scale game development projects for a number of good reasons.

The uncertainty of funding is probably one of the biggest challenges and even with a steadily increasing cash flow (i.e. SC) there's no guarantee of a finished project, at least not in a reasonable time frame. (10 years or less)

MMOs will still continue to be built, but most likely not with designs many here on this site would favor.

MMORPGs in the classic sense are probably gone for good, at least in terms of seeing anything new and with AAA or even AA size or quality.

There's still a few hopefuls I realize, Ashes, the LOL spinoff, Bethesda's new one or hey, maybe even GTA6, who knows.

There are certain games you know deep down will never get finished rather at the start because of signs or a gut feeling you will be right to trust it theres no point in being in denial, as for me I am a believer in what I see, if I see incompetence over and over delays and money milking and best of all broken promises I Avoid your game like the god dam plague just like it deserves to be

I backed "City of Titans." It is going on TEN years since they crowd funded. I still get "updates." It is a small team creating this MMO so I am not holding them to a standard I use for AAA companies.

Will it get made? I don't know. Will I play it if it releases? I don't know.

I pledged enough for the game and a couple of months of "subscriptions." I'll certainly give it a try, but not holding my breath for a "great experience" like I had with City of Heroes :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

To the opposite of some here (not you!), I don't wish the death of games others enjoy. I don't really need to mention all the asshats who wished New World's death, for instance, that's an attitude I just don't understand.

People have been waiting for Camelot Unchained for years now. I really hope they get a decent game they can enjoy, just as they probably enjoyed the now very old DAoC.

What's wrong with him delegating comms out to someone else? Any time his name is attached to something, it seems there is plenty of criticism (deserved or not) and he's seemed more then willing to engage, usually to his own detriment PR-wise. Pretty sure people here have recommend he not take the bait and let someone else handle socialization/communication of info. So it seems like a bit of "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

That's true. The game struggles with performance even without other players around and even on most modern hardware. You get like 20 fps just by standing in grass field in their "Golden Plains" zone, on a PC which can run Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings without DLSS enabled at 1444p.

This is the primary reason they are not showing any gameplay and instead tell bullshit to people for an hour on each of their livestreams.

You think NW is worth a few months of fun right now?  Once I've completed all of the quest based content in FO76 on my new sniper build I'm probably going to move on until Pitt drops.

I'm just not into doing endless dailies and event runs (though a couple of the new, open world ones are pretty fun) so maybe NW, buy to play so why not?

Can't see a return to LA any time soon, unless new landmass content drops maybe.

Honestly, if you have never played, you're definitely in for at least a few months of good, immersive fun. Just wait until you're out in the world hearing the job of the sound team too, it's just as great as the graphics.
If the upcoming summer event is even just half as good as the winter one, it'll be a blast.
And for the first time in a long time, I'm enjoying endgame PvP in a MMORPG. With my guild, we do invasions, wars and OPR/Arenas every day. There are also politics involved with the three factions, sometimes it's more interesting to support an attacking faction that is not yours in order to get a town back up and running instead of ignoring it and letting and inept guild control it.
I'm Marauder, and tonight, we're going to help some Covenant dudes to take over a city managed by a syndicate guild which doesn't care at all and let's all the installations rot.

You mean something like Star Citizen, which was crowdfunded with like $400 million, been in development since 2011 and is still far from being finished?  ;)

Yes, yes, we definitely NEED more things like these  :p

All jokes aside, while crowdfunding may theoretically lead to good MMO games - it has more chances of making yet another failure because there's no financial responsibility and developers will keep thinking that "I should definitely try to kickstart my unimaginative garbage even though I have 0 experience with managing my own company all by myself and/or developing my own complex game engine needed for the complex project, the worst thing that will happen is I will have to close down and make few people on interwebs disappointed, with no legal obligations to those people, which is not a big deal, I can always try again later once enough people will forget about my previous failure".
With us really only having Albion Online as a CF MMO that has made a name for itself, the track record is poor. But where else are we going to get MMOs using templates which are not just WoW (ish)? AAA has all but abandoned MMORPGs, and NW proves that a lot of dosh does not give sure fire success anyway. Smaller self funded indie is a possibility, but how many well known titles have come from that over the last ten years?

I just don't see MMORPG's branching out more without CFing. What I see is them going down the route of gambling "gameplay", collector (NFT) "gameplay" and currency speculation "gameplay".
I don't see much or any evidence that CF mmos will help the genre move forward in any constructive way. I also think the titles that have come out to date from "normal" studios have actually brought a lot of interesting new ideas and mechanics along with them.
Well to give that evidence we need more of them to release so I agree with you. AO did do their MMO somewhat differently, certainly not the same old WoW template. I agree "normal studios" have brought something interesting to the table but not sure any of them beats AO for innovation. Not saying AO is a big innovator, we just don't see much innovation really.

As examples, I thought BDO was quite innovative in its economic system, Rifts class system was interesting. Music is innovative, Lotro and NW spring to mind, but that is an example of an "innovation" far more MMOs should have as standard!

What sort of innovations are you thinking of, interesting to hear about them.

It's always much less to be innovative when your game isn't successfully released.

For example XL Games had unique take on MMOs with their Civilization Online, then had to cancel it.

I think Blizzard was having you live a kind of double life as both average citizen and superhero in Project Titan. Then it got cancelled.

SOE had fantastic and ambitious plans for EQ 3. That got cancelled too.

A lot of these crowdfunded MMOs seem so innovative because they get so much visibility before dysfunctional innovations have had time to fail.

Well, long and short answer would be, We don't NEED anything.

The thing is, what players today want, is for an MMO to come out and be what WoW was to EQ.

Now the thought is that what made WoW so much batter, was that the Devs that made the game, also played the game, and they not only played WoW, they also played EQ, and UO, so they had a ground view of what players really wanted, and this addressed their issues and gripes with the previous gen of games they were playing, in a better, updated package.

Now, the main consensus among gamers is, that this kind of event will not happen again as long as suits run the show, so the only way for some genre changing event like that to happen again, is if the next gen game is designed and built by gamers that not only have that, ground level view with other gamers, but are also passionate about their game being the next tier up, something they would want to play.

Which is ideally where the fun factor comes in, you really can't tell what is fun to a gamer, if you are not one. Just like you cannot tell what would make fishing more fun, if you don't fish.

This is why the idea of "By the People that do this, For the People that Do this" actually works, as long as it is the case, and not some bullshit catchphrase.
Beer definitely makes fishing more fun from back in the days when used I used to do it, I imagine that hasn't changed much.

But I suppose beer makes most things more fun.

    ;)

I use alcohol to add challenge to MMO's, for anyone that needs more challenge, I suggest this approach as after enough of it, you would be amazed how hard it is to not die from falling off a cliff.

I'm Marauder, and tonight, we're going to help some Covenant dudes to take over a city managed by a syndicate guild which doesn't care at all and let's all the installations rot.

    We won ;)

Funny story, used to play a lot of 8 ball in bars when I was around college age and heavy drinking was part of the experience.

I always shot much better pool from about drink 2 thru 8, with my skills rapidly declining as the count got into double digits.

I never did nearly as well on the nights we'd shoot pool alcohol free at the Catholic rec center across from the fraternity house, something about the alcohol relaxed me and got me into the grove.

Can't say the same for playing video games, especially grouping with others in MMORPGS, always lead to "Leroy" moments of one sort of another so I rarely did it.

It's part of the politics in NW.
You had the same in DAoC with the three factions.

Not exactly.  In New World what you did was literally combine green and yellow into a single group to attack purple.  In DAOC you might have Albs and Hibs both hit Mid keeps at the same time but certainly not in the same group.

    I hate it.

Like that makes a big difference. They were communicating anyway.
Jeez, do you guys really insist to post fake stuff about games I have actually played ?
The 3 factions politics was something all DAoC players actually loved.

I played DAOC live blue servers over 2 yrs, never observed coordinated cross teaming like you described, Mythic would ban if they even caught a whiff of it.

No voice chat permitted, all done by text, but then you probably were a filthy Hib or Mid, so not surprised. ;)

(Probably on the Euro servers, again, not surprised.)  ;)

I moved on to Dred for another 2.5 years and we routinely worked with other guilds to dislodge the big dogs or defend our turf, Shadowklan for life.

I hate it even more when the biggest and second biggest factions team up on the struggling faction.
