Bleh, guild wars. The game has tracking built in....enuf said. But Ill say more anyway. I for one am not a fan of arena based pvp, the range on the ranged classes isnt long enough and there are no stealther classes. Not that I like being a rogue type or ever have for that matter but I like the randomness it brings to the game. One other thing, not enough insta cast spells/dots, aoe spells. aIf I want to pvp, I want to pvp for a while. Not just for a short amount of time. Thats one of the biggest reasons Im not a fan of the pvp in guild wars.
My fav is daoc as there battlegrounds has castle defense/castle taking, all classes play a distinctive roll in group pvp and you can get xp thru there pvp in battlegrounds.
This is kinda like asking, which country has the best hockey team, and then you go listing France in the 10 choices...LOL. I am not even thinking team France would beat our Junior Canucks all-champions team. Think Crosby would own those Frenchs a big time!
Or like listing Canada/USA in a soccer list...I mean...come on, I am pretty sure the local team of Paris, Marseilles or London alone would own the best of the best NA team, easily.

i like your opinion on DAOC pvp logan.. maybe ill try DAOC's free trials sometimes..
personally, i like WoW pvp so far.. because each classes has its own playstyle and if played right they can be deadly.. even tho many WoW player feel classses imbalance, but i think thye havent utilize 100% of their given skills/spells..
also i have to bow for WOW's devs team to bring such wonderful stealthed system.. and IMO its the best rogue definition skill avaiable in MMO so far...
My friend always encourage me to try UO's pvp.. however, only the fact that UO's 2D that kept me to try it because its a significant difference to pvp at 2D and 3D
Shadowbane, hands down. The game is 100% about PvP. DaoC I would ranks second, and Lineage 2 a close third. The rest don't even rank in my book, and yes I have played them.
For starters- I listed EQ as a choice because there are pvp servers and Ive heard a few people mention how much they enjoyed the pvp of eq. Mainly I listed it not because I think it would even get close to winning but so that someone doesnt say "omg, you didnt list my favorite". See what I mean?
I played shadowbane and daoc for a long time. Shadowbane was actually my first mmo and daoc was my third. I loved the fact that it was FFA. Some people might think that FFA would lead to alot of ganking. For the most part it didnt.
Personally I think DAOC's pvp stomped shadowbanes though. To me daoc's pvp was greatly group oriented. Every class had there roll. For example. A typical group would have there healer(obvious class description) a sorcerer(dmg + cc ability) wizard(pure damage) scout (stealthed archer-could see other stealthers, especially rogues) your tank warrior types and your rogue types (invisible/great damage) If my group ran across another group, I being the sorcerer would Mez the whole group(aoe stun of sorts) and then pick of called targets. Usually the wizards would call targets and other classes would assist. Rogues would take out key casters and scouts would deal with revealing other stealthers. First off-- compared to shadowbane, the pvp was more complicated. Shadowbane didnt have nearly as much CC in the game. Thieves in shadowbane (rogues) did weak damage and werent a big threat in pvp.
In shadowbane if a rogue snuck up on me and proceeded to backstab me, I could turn around and blast the crap out of him. He didnt have many ways to stop me from chain nuking him. In daoc however, as a sorcerer, if a rogue decided to backstab me, I really only had one chance of quick casting-- a mez, gettting distance and fighting him from there. Im sure I could explained all this clearer--if I didnt explain it clear enuf srry.
So in conclusion, although I liked SB, castle sieges + real group pvp of daoc >>>>>> shadowbane.
logan, as you stated more detail about DAOC pvp system (group oriented..) i would say its the same as WoW.. usually WoW group consist of Healer (priest or druid) then damage dealer (rogue, warrior, mage) there is hunter to track down stealth or track player like shadowbane huntress/scout.. then warlock and mage usually do the CC (with polymorph and seduce) so, i would say wow's also group oriented pvp

I haven't played Shadowbane or DAoC long enough to judge, but from what I've heard this sounds about fair. (L2 has the best graphics out of the three tho ^.^ and I'm weak to eyecandy.)
I really enjoy the mass pvp in L2. It's relevant to server politics as a lot of it has to do with castle ownership and all the allying and backstabbing that goes with keeping and taking the castles. Rarely do you see pointless gankfests in L2 despite it being an open PvP game.
In terms of individual skills tho, I like WoW much better. The skill system is far more complex and the classes are better balanced ..so 1vs1 type PvP is that much more fun. (L2 PvP is very much group and clan based.) Problem is, the honor system is kinda broken still, so to me WoW pvp is pointless. Fun, but pointless.
oh come on, where is EVE? how on earth did you forget about EVE? how can you give the option for EQ or Guild Wars (pvp? yeaah right!!!) and not EVE? i havent played UO or Shadowbane, so i can't say which one of this is best, but regarding the others, i am sure EVE is a much better pvp game than all of them together. it is like asking for best movie ever, and not putting the godfather, but then putting american pie 2

and still you left out eve-online?
I'm not saying it is the best pvp, but it counts at least better then those pve centered games like EQ, AC. An other one with good pvp I played is Lineage 2, and GW isn't realy a MMORPG (not going to touch the topic in depth here) but the pvp is nice, but not the best.
I don't think there is one game out with the best pvp, why? Because most people have different ideas about pvp and that also means different ideas about good pvp.
"If all magic fails, rely on three feet of steel and a strong arm"
ive got guild wars, shadowbane, eve, and ive played every fre mmo i could possibly get my hands on, and i have mates in EQ/2, WOW, DAOC blah blah blah.
the one thing we all have in common, is we all know each other from EVE-Online, and thats the only game people like the PVP on.
Guild wars is tupid, its good for a month until you actually finish it and theres nothing to do but watch rich people corner the ecomony and charge an arm and a leg for decent weapons so PVP is even more worthless.
shadowbane. just no.
EVE-Online, its the most detailed combat there is, for every fitting, theres an anti-fitting for it, but you can never know whats going to hit you until youre actually all-on fighting and its too late to do anything about it. you die, you lose EVERYTHING, the ship that took you a month to save up for, the fitting with took you a couple of weeks to save up for all blown up. except for a few modules which survive to be claimed as the reward for winning the battle.
theres also the fact that its entirely possible to beat a 2-year old player flying about in a battleship in a little frigate. all it takes is a bit of sense. many a time have we taken on outnumbered fights and won, we even made a video of one and its on the eve-forums.
for those who dont play eve and cant guess what that is, once your ship gets twatted one and goes bang, you automatically eject in your escape pod, which has the ability to warp away faster than anything else, if you have a good frigate/interceptor pilot you can catch them before he warps off, and ontop of costing the poor guy 150 million in ship/equipment losses (assuming you blow up a battleship of course). you can decimate his pod and cost him all his implants as well, which are also very expensive. they increase your skill time and other bonuses. and if the guy was a complete idiot without a clone, you can make him lose about a weeks worth of skill points as well.
dominated.
in eve you can cause suicidal-like misery to anyone you like, anywhere (although empire has its concequences) and it feels so damn good. all you have to do is turn up and blow them out the sky.
heres the link to our EVE pvp time, my mates in the battleship (megathron) who made the video, and im the one in the background in a measly little frigate tanking torpedoes from the typhoon.
this proves my point of the fact you can decimate anyone you want even if youre outnumbered
if planetside was listed i would go for that 1, cause that's only PvP i loved that game alot, i mean whats better then dropping in a base with 3 galax's full of guild people, to kill and fight ur a way inside it till u hacked and captured the base^^ thats everything for me..
its kinda a mix between a first person shooter and mmorpg, which are the best 4 me

Im not trying to be picky but I disagree.
I played wow for quite some time. In wow everyone does damage, everyone is Crowd Control and for that reason damage classes dont rely on other classes to use there CC ability. In daoc archers needed my class to aoe stun so they could pick off targets before they ran away. I was the class tha tmade other classes stand still. It was alot of fun.
Also another group element that isnt there in WoW is Rogues being able to see other rogues. DAOC was great about having one class have there anticlass. In daoc a rogue on my side could protect me from another rogue trying to gank me because they could see other stealthers while I could not Even a archer type could see other stealthers but that element isnt present at all in WoW.
Not once playing wow have I heard people say "stick up" --a common term in daoc to start following the group. Out in battlegrounds, its so small there is no reason for a group to go back and pick someone up. No one runs together as a group. There are also no good run buffs (hunters has penalties) and the ranged classes in wow are barely ranged. In DAOC if I as a archer class started shooting a tank at max range, the tank would have a hell of a time trying to get to me. In wow the warriors just charge, and sorry but thats just lame.
Just my 2 cents-- I like wow for the time being but there pvp was definitely flawed in alot of ways.

You and your GD spaceships. I knew that someone would come on here and complain. It never fails. Another EVE fan boy. Although I truly have no respect for your game in terms of pvp and strategy, I would of put your game on the list so I didnt have to hear you whine BUT I can only put so many choices. Sadly Matrix online and Eve got cut in favor of much more pvp-centric games.
Please though, tell me how complicated and in depth the pvp of Eve is? Indulge me-
Dark age of Camelot is by far the best PvP, overall. Linege 2 has a smokin PvP system but some people are not into the whole "more time put in = better character" thing. I think that is fine and dandy myself. It still takes skill but better equipment makes the better avatar much more so in Lineage 2 though than in most other games.
UO had the best PvP ever before tramell, so when Irth Online comes out I will be playing that because it has that UO feel.

Woohoo! Way to go to stir up the fanboys! I'm going to go make some popcorn and keep an eye on this thread.
But seriously, the PvP strategic component of EVE is incredibly deep. When discussing large scale PvP (RvR), it is quite difficult seperating the different levels of PvP from the combat portion. Combat is usually the product of intelligence gathering, logistic planning, fleet organization, fleet maneuving and political maneuvering. Combat PvP itself is executed on the tactical level but the consequences of a battle have an economic, moral, and political impact.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that PvP strategy occurs on multiple levels and scales from 1v1 encounters to fleet battles of 50 v 50 to corporation/alliance warfare.
You don't have to respect it, but if you want a good discussion of PvP MMOs then you need to include EVE, UO, and WOW. As each is representative of very different design philosophies. Excluding one just becuase you don't like it sets you up for a 'preaching to the choir' position.
I personally think that DAoC Has one of the best PvP systems in the whole mmo genre. BEcause of the battlegrounds and frontiers and all that, and not to mention but DAoC has one of the best Crafting system in the game I personally think next to EQ2. But that is my look on it.
