The enjoyment comes from the effort as a group, especially in mmorpgs. For solo players, maybe one character pership is ok, but this is a major turn-off for me.

Well maybe you wouldn't mind it, but there are a lot do. I mean what happens when you get a ship of the line and need 400 other players on your ship to keep it going?

Now let me see, a final port battle with 50 ships in it, 50x400 = 20000. 20000 clients is a lot to put in one instance and still have it smooth.

the whole point of an MMO is playing with other people, right?
If they are afraid that their player base is incapable of acting as teams on a ship, this game is kinda pointless. They should introduce something like the henchmen system in GW - that you can have a crew of 20 people on a large ship - which can consist completly of NPC pirates or player characters or a mixture of both - in a way that a good player-crew will always win aganst a NPC crew...
Otherwise its just a FPS with ships and cannons ^^

LMAO!  So much speculation going on here and none of you know anything other than what you have read in the faq and on message boards.   I'd hold off on writing this game off so quickly and I'd also hold off on speculating what it might really be like until some definative information is released by the developers of the game.   I understand the game is barely in closed beta phase 1 and that means there is still a whole lot of game that they need to create before it going live.

Dude the ship is your toon. In EQ terms what you want is for one person to control your movement, another to cast spells and another to wield the m

What happens when you need 200 crew or more. There would be at most 50 to 100 ships in play. You would never see someone and I cannot see you keeping 200 people organised that would be one seriously big and dedicated guild.

    desired jobs on ship :

    Captain

    undesirable jobs on ship :

    Everything else

The jobs in this era of sail are not that interesting or pleasant not even for things like gunner.

I looked over the site and it looks like one hell of a big chunk to bite off, but if they pull this game off then I'll be impressed and fork cash. As for now I'm locked in this piece of S*** Rf Online pre-order unfortunately, so before I pay I want to see comments from people in game.

    ... gamer forever

If there were multiplayer crews they wouldn't be in the 100s - the players would take the position of the ships critical officers so even a ship of the line would only have a small number of player positions. Noone is suggesting that players should be scrubbing the galley or hauling specific ropes .. Saying 20 ships would equal too many players is wrong.

Personally I would like to see a game with teamwork for running individual ships, either sail or space. In such a game I would have little interest in being captain and would happily take orders from any sane roleplaying player.

One player per ship makes it a different game - which works in it's own right.

The age of sail setting is perfect for a MMO and POTBs looks fabulous. I'm confident it is going to be the parrots bollocks.. Arrrr! ::::28::

There's an interesting comparison with Star Trek Online here. Very similar in many areas of gameplay. Only Star Trek Online has indeed decided to go with the multi-crew ships. It'll be interesting how that pans out, cos funny as you're examples of crew "harmony" are, they probably will end up happening. One problem that is more likely to raise it's ugly head in game's that require this amount of cooperation is concerned with age. How many 13 yr olds really want to spend a great amount of time on a ship with people the same age as their parents, telling them what to do all the time, I know I wouldn't have at that age. How many adults want to put up with a bunch of 13 yr olds who seem to spend most of their time saying things like "I've got 14,640 dabloons! How bout u?" and "w0ot!" and "this ship sux ass!" Many people are worried about this on the Star Trek forums, it'll be interestin to see how it ultimately works out. Perhaps Pirates of the burning sea is right in going down this route.

I'm glad that they're not going with human crews on ships, hopefully it will alienate the 'raid leader' types who get their main fun in game from creating hierarchies and lording it over those at the bottom. If I'm playing a pirate, the last thing I want is some loser on ventrillo screeching orders at me.

Most *really* good movies get good games made after them.

So, most likely this game will be playable.

On the flip side, I hated sailing around in a boat on Zelda... I mean what are you going to see when you're spending a bunch of hours sailing?  The horizon?  I don't want to witness what pirates really went through...

"Cap we're running out of food and water, what do you want us to do?"

    "Start eating eachother!"

"Captain! After 24 hours of real life time sailing We have spotted land!"

"My god, we can finally play the game mates!  Grab your swords and hide, I don't want to die and ha ve to spend 24 hours sailing back here!"

Seriously though, what could honestly be fun with simulation sailing after a few hours of doing it?  I guess if they had some pretty neat graphics, but being lthat the ocean really isn't that special to look at after a few hours in real life and that's what they're basing it on, not fantasy... I couldn't see this going far.

Still, the game will average around an 80 review, with mmorpg probably giving it an 83.

Users will rate it at about 75-77 I bet.

Ir better have awesome weather effects!

if you would actually go to the game's official website and read the forums you would get some answers to your questions...

for one: the thing about players per ship...what would you do on the ship? handle the rigging? would you like to spend months doing that in a game? no, you would quit, think about it just a little bit more, and why would you want to be a passenger on someone elses ship when you can have your own anyway?  if you want to go somewhere with someone that badly then why not take two ships along side eachother? better firepower that way anyway right?

second: the broadband thing, they say that it is a requirement for smooth gameplay because some games out there do not require broadband internet to play..World of warcraft, the biggest MMORPG EVER doesn't require broadband internet, that is why they say it's a requirement...when they say requirement they mean just that, you HAVE to have it to play this game, otherwise, you won't even be allowed to play the game.

third: in the future, please visit the website and get to know the community and developers before you go posting stuff like this, it only makes you sound didn't take any time to research anything beforehand.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
