    Granted I'm slicing hairs here:

addict. 1 : to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively <addicted to gambling>

    http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=addicted

Dark_Vengeance gave the very definition of addiction. One could say exactly the same thing for drug users, gamblers...and everything else, that Dark did. ANYTHING can be a addiction if you let it. (eating, watching TV, drinking..ect)

In American culture we have taken a role that people are "victims" to there addictions, this isn't true. If you can't control you, who can? Why is someone else to blame for actions you chose voluntarily? It's nice for law suits to blame others, but in truth if your addicted to anything it's your own fault... and who's to say that's bad?

I go to work each day, I pay my taxes and rent. What's it to you, if I'm habitually or obsessively doing something? Addictions are only bad, if you are unhappy with what you are doing, if that's the case, then you know what you need to do to break the habit. Blaming others for your choices is childish.

Your smoking addiction isn't hurting me, if your happy smoking, why do I care?  Let's stop trying to save people from themselfs.

The strange thing about a "MMORPG Addiction" is that the "Addict" can quit one "game" and move on to another in a matter of an instant, not dwelling back at the "game" he/she was once addicted to.  There are always more "game pushers" and "game trafficers" advertising and selling their "game" to the "Addicts".  The major difference is that they "tease" the "Addict" in to buying their "game" by creating "anticipation" in which builds "interest" of using that "game" right after dropping another game.

So my question to you is:  "how can you be an addict if you can quit so easily?"

Hence, there are no real addict's to a MMORPG game.   The only thing they are addicted to is "change" and everyone in life is addicted to new things.  That is why we see so many new things in our every day world.  So the "concept" of an "Addict" is a conception best sent to the recycle bin.  image

I hear what you are all saying, computer game addiction is still not recognised as a clinical disorder, but when it makes some people neglect some other things in their lives then can this be called addiction?

i am going to make up an online survey/questionnaire if everyone would be happy to fill it in for me ?

i will be back with time....  ta!

I'm addicted to MMORPG's as much as I am smoking... and you're right. I can quit anytime and even switch brands on occation if I want. It's easy to quit. I've done it dozens of times. *blinks*

Everquest and cigarette companies I really believe have a deal going because about the only thing you can do while you wait for getting mana or HP back is smoke. It's too perfect... :D

its not that simple though. ive heard sooo many eq horror stories. they may not be addicted to the actual game, as u say they could be addicted to the change. it seems ppl become addicted to something because of the way it changes there life. like the dude that killed himself because of an in game girl. the changed his life so drastically it became his life, and he reacted like so.

Just because its not a physical dependency, doesn't mean it can't be a psychological dependency.

Addiction, simply put, is (a) behavior that negatively impacts other areas of your life, whether by choice or compulsion, recognized or unrecognized.

Think food isn't a drug?  I beg to differ-it's the most rampant addiction in America.  Hard to classify?  Not really . . . .

Over 60% of the US is now clinically obese. This will lead to heart disease and other health problems down the road that will cost us BILLIONS in health care compared to other countries.  One french fry is not going to hurt you, but when you supersize a whopper meal 3x a week and chase it with a 1,000 calories Frap from Starbucks and your Body Mass Index rockets past 25, you best believe you are doing long term damage, whether educated and informed or not.

You love it, but say you could give it up any time. Really?  Seems 60% of us can't--I don't know anyone who growing up said, "I want to be a fatboy with size 44 jeans and bypass surgery by age 40 because I love whoppers more than anything!  I'll sacrifice my health and happiness-anything for a whopper!"

Uh-uh.  Call it prioritization or lack of judgement.  Addiction does not imply that you are no longer responsible for the outcome, but it may mean you need help. Too many calories, too many hours, not enough sleep, etc.  If you can't change, get help or get rid of the temptation because you are an addict-regardless of what the New England Journal of Medicine says (or has yet to say).

Permadeath and environmental challenges are the next great step in the evolution of MMORPGs. Only through true adversity will one feel accomplished. Only in truly knowing you can die will true adversity present itself.

I played DAoC before everyone decided to make Infiltrators. I don't think I was ever addicted, but I would say if DAoC guild vs guild worked more like shadowbanes I would still be playing DAoC. Now personally I think Shadowbane has about 2 years of development before its as good as DAoC in all other areas...Too Bad...

I can say I was addicted to Age of Empires, multiplayer. I played ladder games and was determined everyday when I awoke to get higher on the ladder. My wife worked. I can't tell you how many times I ate Ramen in front of the PC because it was quick and easy. 12 to 14 hours a day. When the AoK came out I played it, but not near as much. I haven't Played AoM, except for twice at a friends.

I am looking for another MMORPG that you have more control over the destiny of the map.

I  used to play a text based MMOG called Galactic Wars, with my 10mhz XT and 2400baud modem. It was siq, ahh the good ol' days....

I now play poker online for a living. Not addicted though. I am sick of it. I would quit tomorrow if I could make as much money getting a job...

Don't blame you for been addicted the games living in scotland is dead boring mateimage

Anyhow like most that care to admit it on this board I am addicted to MMORPGs.

Mine probably started in university way back in 1998(my final year)with UO but was not serious by then.I would play an hour or 2  max. Some days not even bother to play.

If there was a good party or anything I would go without thinking about it.

It got bad about 2000 with a death occurred in the family and really I found it very hard to cope.People will say ok let it out and lets chat but honestly I found it very hard to do that.

And I was not working during this period. So I turned to people online(sad aren't it) who I did not have to see their faces and could easily talk freely about it.This was in EQ and probably one of the reasons I always laugh when people say EQ community is crappy(yeah its crappy if you only want free loot from them )

So by end of the year I was clocking in something like 8-10 hours a day in EQ.

By early 2002 job made me cut back to under 4 hours a year.

Thatas baout when I quit EQ.

Now I can sit down and have 10 hours sessions but it is only when I have absolutely nothing to do and since I am not a TV fan and have a mortgage I have to pay for I can't afford to go out and drink 100 quid on the weekend(and i work part time only atm)

So yeah during weekends i can clock a lot of hours  now.

Am I still addicted yes.Not as heavily as before but still addicted.

Would I give up MMORPGs .No simply will kill me financially.I pay 25 pounds for my broadband and 11 pounds for the current game i am playing-SWG for a month.

If I was to quit then I would need some other way to amuse myself and that will probably mean nights out .

All sounds like fun and all ,and many will say yes you will have a life but I would not have my house thats for sure.

    So am I addicted

  • Sensei_KaelsSensei_Kaels Member Posts: 277

I have the answer for you. ITS FUN!

playing in a world where you can be a 200lb muscular elf, or a 50lb tarutaru, because your living a life of magic n stuff.. also because its a game with chat inside, thats why i cant stand non-mmorpg, because you play by yourself, and i HATE that. i will never play console games ever again.

  • LansidLansid Member UncommonPosts: 1,097
I wish I could pay in pounds... *looks at self* I have some "pocket change" in weight I could afford to get rid of. lol

Even though people play MMORPG's all the time you can't call it an addiction. That is just like saying we are addicted to real life, we do it 24/7. But to be immersed into a fantasy world for a couple of hours, isn't much. People that play MMORPG's like to escape from real life and embrace themselves into a new world, where you can be whoever you like. You could be a strong barbarian, to a skinny elf.

I try not to think of it as a game, but more of a whole new world, where i can socialize with others, and explore the vast lands. MMORPG's are more of an experience, which takes longer to conquer than half an hour a day.

Addiction? or maybe it's something else...
