i dont feel like reading through all the replies, but let me say this about eq2 population.
im on an american server, and about a week ago i decided to check the amount of players on the server. since the search feature maxes at 100 people per search i broke it down into levels. at 3 AM IN THE MORNING (like i said this is an AMERICAN server so that is NOT peak time) there were 4,000+ people online on my server. i say 4,000 plus because there were more than 100 level 50s and more than 100 level 21s online that night so i didnt get a completely accurate number.
by any MMO standard, for one server thats a lot of people online at the same time. when i played FFXI the servers usually CAPPED at about 5k people and as big as that world was it still felt crowded.

Hate to break this to you Tygris but there was just a press release by a 3rd party about WoW and EQ2 and various other MMO's. According to aforementioned press release EQ2 is now at 400-500k players.
It's not dying. You can hate SOE, many do. I'm not a big fan of them either. You can hate EQ2
But calling people who play the game liars just because you don't personally like it is lame.
Have a nice day. EQ2 and WoW are only 2 of the multitudinous MMORPG's on the market. If you don't like one or the other then go play something else. Personally I don't care. Frankly I'm surprised people still take the time to bash an MMORPG or publishing company. It's a waste of your time.
Your 'facts' are flawed and your 'conclusions' are likewize flawed. You played in new/low level player areas. Of course they seemed empty considering over half the player base is well beyond level 40 now. In 1 month you can hit level 30 if you put your mind to it. How many high level players do you expect to be hunting in low level areas, exactly?
I'm not saying I buy the #'s put out in a press release but you're arguing with 3rd party information and first hand information from people playing the game. In my book all that does is make you look stupid. I don't see SOE running around saying "we have 200k players" I see sites like MMORPGCHART.COM and various gaming magazines reporting on subscriber numbers. Not SOE. To me that makes the numbers credible. A lot more credible than someone who obviously has a bone to chew with the game (or the company) making blanket statements.
Comparing EQ2, a game we know for a fact has over 200,000 players, to AC2, a game that never even broke 75,000 players is just rediculous. EQ2 has already paid for it's development costs. AC2 never did. I know this is a hard concept to understand but once an MMORPG has paid for it's initial development costs it's pretty much pure profit. The ongoing costs of running servers and bug fixing are minimal compared to the development costs of the game and it only takes a few thousand monthly subscribers to cover the cost of bandwidth, server maintenance and bug fixing. Anything over 15k players or so is gravy. As proven by AC1 which has been cruising along with about 45k players for several years now.
Even IF you were right, which you obviously are not, EQ2 isn't going anywhere unless SOE just decides to pull the plug. Which won't happen either as long as the game is cutting a profit it will exist. This is Sony we're talking about.
Hate all you want. And oh please do feel free to call me a fanboy if you want. I don't even play the game. But try to keep your facts factual and your opinions based on some semblance of reality rather than whatever hate blinding you've undergone.
Have a nice day.

EQ2 is making a profit and a good one.It may not be minting money as WoW but its making millions per month too.
So i dunno which school you went to but NO ONE shuts down a profitable buisness.
AC2 was losing money. It had under >50k accounts as compared to EQ which has anywhere from 250k as the lowest estimate to 450k as the highest estimate.

I mean, I dont really like Nissan Vehicles (for example) but you're not gonna see me post stuff at a Nissan forums at their site saying I hope they die off...I KNOW they will die out in one year...who the hell drives NIssans??? Everyone says they have one but I never see it....

Also, if you have a sudden urge to blast into a company then feel free to post it on another thread that currently exists. There's no need to make another post. You know, the fun thing is, people are tossing around subscription numbers. Anyone got any links to back this stuff up? Particularly those throwing out total subscriber base figures? And no, MMOchart hasn't been updated since early June, and is therefore NOT a viable source of information.
Don't recall where, but I remember reading that the subscriber base has been increasing since May-ish and that the total at the end of Summer stands around 400k-ish. I'll try to dig up the link, if I can find it. Regardless, this is truly HILARIOUS that someone thinks a game that has more than 200k subscribers is going to be folding any time soon. Guess what? They've already made back the production costs. The game will keep going as long as it has enough subscribers to exceed its daily operational costs, which has been described in many, many places as being somewhere in the 40-50k range (and some argue as low as 20k). You folks who have this reflexive hatred really need to take a deep breath or grow up or something. I mean cripes, you act like it's a holy quest for you to savage SOE.
AC2 folded because it was down to, at last count, less than 14k subscribers, and had been floating around the 10k-ish area for a long time (MMOchart for reference, not counting the failure of the Legions expansion and a continued decline in subscriptions that Turbine admitted to over the summer). That ISN'T a sustainable level, and it never peaked high enough in terms of subscribers to justify the production costs. To be honest, it made it a lot longer on such a small subscriber base than I thought it would -- which is a POSITIVE comment about Turbine's willingness to keep trying and to see it through.
Bottom-line: get over it, get past this inane hatred. It's hilarious to hear people talk about EQ2 failing, when regardless of which set of total pop #s you use, it's in the top 6 most populous MMORPGs out of the total MMORPGs out there.

there ya go, rock solid proof wow has more subscribers than any other MMORPG =p
Edit as a note, This is only currently subscribing players, anybody who quit or doesnt have an active account is not in the calculation. EQ2 wont fold, but id put 100 bucks on them merging servers pretty soon as the pops are pretty damn low.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Since November, World of Warcraft has signed up more than four million subscribers worldwide, making for an annual revenue stream of more than $700 million. About a million of those subscribers are in the United States (with more than half a million copies sold this year) and another 1.5 million are in China, where the game was introduced just three months ago. By contrast, EverQuest II now has between 450,000 and 500,000 subscribers worldwide, with about 80 percent in the United States.
no one is denying WoW has by far more subscribers than any other MMO out there, but that doesnt mean EQ2 has a small amount.

thats where I got confused. But EQ2 servers are too spread out for their current population. and there was no disctiction made in that figure between active and none active accounts. So I would take that figure with a grain of salt. Keep in mind when you log into EQ2, every server, even at peek is a Low Pop.

It's obviously active, inactive accounts don't count. And as for the light population on EQ2 servers is indicative not of actual populace but also of the amount of players that said servers can maintain. EQ2 servers can hold more players than WoW, I read that somewhere in a quote, Nihilanth could probably find it, he's good like that. Also, the RP servers are heavy at peak hours like 6pm or so est. When was the last time you logged in? Try logging in at peak hours and see how they are.
It's just a better game than WoW in my humble opinion, man have they worked hard on it since release and it shows. Anyways, 450k + active subscriptions in EQ2, put that in your pipe and smoke it EQ2haters.
The New York Times is your source? Why not use the National Enquirer since they are both even in the accuracy department. When the New York Times can actually cite their source for the 450-500k subscribers then you can talk but until then a newspaper that apologises on a daily basis for getting stories wrong cannot possibly be taken seriously.
To sum up 1. EQ2 is still a failure 2. SOE fanbois are still devoid of reality 3. Can't wait to laugh at the lvl 10-40 morons that bought the expansion and wont be able to use it

To sum up:
1. Only a WoW fan would complain aboutl an article that does nothing but hype the success of WoW... just because it brings up a subscriber number for a rival game that they don't agree with. 2. WoW fans are still devoid of reality 3. Can't wait for two years from now, when EQ2 and WoW are both still going. Why? Because the profit-point of EQ2 is somewhere about 50k subscribers, and even the most conservative public numbers have it at multiple-times that point. And higher earlier, which reduces the over-time need for profit. Or, in other words, that's called "looking at reality without the rose-colored glasses of a WoW fan, who seems obsessed with bashing other games because it seems to inflate their itsy-bitty egos."

The same could be said about WoW's "1 million NA" accounts also. They don't say "active".
The only real way to show us true population is to show us how many players are online and no company other than Mythic is willing to do that. That's unfortunate too because I'd like to know truely how many people play WoW because almost all the people I know quit playing after they got to 60. On the opposite side all the people that made it to 50 in EQ2 are still there... makes me wonder about end game content there... I know WoW has none.
Yup, Swiftflow, there is. Point #3, which you didn't react to. Made an assumption on #1 and #2, should replace WoW with "anyone who hates any company so blindly as to be removed from all objectivity or ability to reason".
The New York Times is your source? Why not use the National Enquirer since they are both even in the accuracy department.
NY times is a very reputable source of information and is, in no way, comparable to a tabloid magazine. That's sorta like comparing CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and Foxnews to Ebaum's world (no offense Ebaum). While everyone has their opinions about one of these newstations, they are a reputable source of information and any deviation in the truth can result in severe penalties and/or fines. Just talk to Dan Rather about that.
Don't disown one of the largest newspapers in the world simply because you loathe a company; that's just silly.
Finally, please do not refer to players of any particular game as morons. Thats a temp bannable offense. Be careful with your comments.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
as a note to Celestian, the reason I brought the issue of active accounts about EQ2 is becuase the Blizzard press release stated that it was only including active accoutns in which the account was accessed semi-recently.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

Please dont tell me you buy the so-called news from those organizations as legitimate ? 50 years from now my great grandchildren will be reading their history text books about the era where corporate america ruled the world. And part of that rule covers what we hear, read, and see on tv. They will ask why america's citizens allowed this to happen. The answer will be simple, greedy people like Rupert Murdoch took control of several major news outlets and followed by taking over the means to deliver that news (directv). You hear and read what a rich white 75 yr old man wants you to hear.
Try and watch FoxNews a little more closely and try not to gag on the ridiculously biased lies they spread. You want news, dont mention corporate lapdogs like them. Try and watch Bill Mauer on HBO if you want the truth
And the only reason Dan Rather got a slap on the wrist was because he got caught in public. Only after the public complained therefore threatening their almighty ad revenue did CBS do anything
and i seriously doubt EQ2 went from 240k to 500k in a few months. Most mmorpgs at their point are treading water trying to maintain players. Yes there will be a few small spikes but no way are they gonna double their population.
Me thinks this is SOE overcounting like they always do. MMOChart researcher reported this happened a lot. Mostly due to SOE counting everyone who subscrived to their all-access pass regardless if they had ever bought a certain game (much less created a toon). And I suspect the recent addition of Matrix is skewed those numbers.
Once Mmochart comes out with new numbers I'll be expecting to see no change to EQ2's numbers.
admriker....I dont know about you anymore. You flip flop about hating/liking SOE like John Kerry flip flopped his presidential campagin.
lol, i dont know whether or not to take you seriously with your comments.
And, I still stand by my comment. NY Times is not comparable to a tabloid. No matter how much you hate the Newspaper. Thats like comparing Wall Street Journal to STAR magazine. Sure they have articles you dont agree with; however, that doesnt mean they suck as a journalistic source of information.
And so what if EQ2 numbers went up OR down. You kids defend and/or flame the weirdest things these days.
When I was your age I was arguing who was hotter: Tiffany or Debbie Gibson. Damn, you guys are arguing over subscription numbers. Come on now..dont you find the silliness in all of this?

What I dont' get is why people are so obsessed over an SOE title. Why do you care how many people are playing EQ2? If you're enjoying your title that's great. If you don't like SOE then don't buy their games. But running around doubting a Newspaper the likes of the NYTimes is crazy. They probably asked Sony for subscription information.

why are you so obsessed with their subscription numbers??? Don't you find that a little odd?
It is extremely weird how fixated people become on subscription numbers, as though the subscription numbers themselves somehow translate directly into the game's quality. Personally, and this isn't meant to insult anyone, just to state an opinion, I think it has a lot to do with the increasing prevalence of childish or ill-educated attitudes across the MMORPG spectrum. The sort of thinking that says "#s = quality" is a very basic and ill-formed logic, hence not calling anyone a "child" but referring to the thinking behind the words as childish or badly-formed.

EQ2 wont fold, but id put 100 bucks on them merging servers pretty soon as the pops are pretty damn low.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
we were talking about eq2 lol. everyone knows wow has 4 mil.
anyways heres the article that says eq2 has 450-500k subs.

here's the quote:
no one is denying WoW has by far more subscribers than any other MMO out there, but that doesnt mean EQ2 has a small amount.
Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT
"Sorry champ, new numbers were release in that article about WoW and it's 450k+ subscribers. Happy to dissapoint you."
thats where I got confused.

To sum up
1. EQ2 is still a failure
2. SOE fanbois are still devoid of reality

2. WoW fans are still devoid of reality

Be careful with your comments.

as a note to Celestian, the reason I brought the issue of active accounts about EQ2 is becuase the Blizzard press release stated that it was only including active accoutns in which the account was accessed semi-recently.
