Hello my faithful members!

I am pretty confident that I have designed a unique and fair way to "rank" you guys based on all kinds of things...and most of you will be happy to know that "post count" will not be part of what determines your rank...although forum activity is definately part of it - we are going to go a little beyond just counting your posts.

What I need from all of you is the titles for the ranks.  I would like at least 5.  Example:

  1. Uber member!
  2. Hardcore member
  3. Average member
  4. Apprentice member
  5. Newbie

These are obviously lame...and that is why I am coming to you for help!  We can have more than 5 - but we need at least 5.  If you can deliver this...you will have ranks...and soon!  I will also post a list soon that will show the top 100 or so users based on my new ranking system.

    they have something similar on another board i looked at recently (forgot which). Their highest rank was "Gran Pu-Bah" we could use something cool like that.

    this way people can see where they stand in the acronym MMORPG. I know #6 may sound kinda lame, but the definition is "To travel often and widely, especially for sightseeing." seems to me if you're at the lowest rank, you probably don't post often and you just come to the site to look around.

    Please take this as constructive criticism and not negative feedback (I always welcome opinions on my posts).
    A lot of the ranks people are suggesting seem to be limited to the fantasy theme. Fantasy is obviously the most popular MMORPG, but there are other genres (Sci-Fi, Historical, Real Life, etc). It would look a bit odd to have a website that is dedicated to all MMORPG's, yet has a ranking system that is so obviously tied to a particular genre. Just an opinion.

    I agree...I thought of that as I was browsing through them too.  The more non-genre specific the ranks the better.  Misti's chess theme might be a good non-genre one though...

    1.  Newbie (of course)

    2.  Novice

    3.  Gamer

    4.  Veteran

    5.  Uber Member (I also think around this stage you should be allowed to customize your rank)

    I agree how about a ranking system that allows each user to choose from a list of items what they want their title to be at each level.  Ex, at the lowest level you could choose from: Plebe, Noob, Serf, Space Monkey, etc...  I think that would please everyone.

    While I see your point elbarto69, most of these listed are capable of crossing genres.  For instance, there was an Emperor in Star Wars.  There were Dukes and Barons in Dune.  A ranking system doesnt even really need to apply to mmorpgs to be fun or appropriate either.

    Even something totally non mmorpg like flowers would be fun imo.  image

    Picking from a list is a good idea too.  Maybe have a Sci-fi, Fantasy, abstract title for each level and let the individual pick their theme?  Then again with variable titles per rank nobody would know what the ranks meant anyway.  image

    Some notes on the new rank system:

    The scores will be determined by a few factors - factors which we won't really mention to prevent people from trying to cheat or whatever.  But I will say that it will be based pretty much on your dedication and contribution to the site.  Also negative factors will have harsh impact on your rank (like having posts deleted for abusive behavior or posting spam in the main boards).

    They will also be generated every day at midnight BASED ON YOUR LAST 30 DAYS of data.  So once you reach the top rank, you will have to stay active to keep it there.  It will also mean that a newer member will have an equal stab at being top dog.

    I would also like to come up with some "awards" that users can be given (these will be permanent with your account).  These would be given to members for gread deeds.  Someone who helps other members a lot in a positive way, or maybe another award for creative and intuitive posts, etc, etc.  These could be very powerful indeed because at some point we might be asked of game developers for a list of award winning members to take part in betas...this would be a good way for them to get certified "dedicated" beta testers image

    Admin, your above ideas are truely awesome and original (as far as I know), but this seems like ALOT of work on the staff's part.  If you can initiate this type of ranking/award program and keep it updated and current- then I say more power to ya!!  I just don't want to see something this ingenuitive and great fall to the wayside due to lack of ability (aka- hope it's not biting off more than you guys can chew).

    Outstanding ideas though!!

    I especially like the "deleted posts" detracting from your rank.

    It will be pretty easy.  The ranking at midnight will be fully automated.  The awards will be a special thing...you might only see 4-5 people getting awards in a month.  And they will be based on repeated observed behavior.  We will also rely on members for letting us know who might be eligible for such awards.

    Ok seriously... I think it's all a great idea, can't wait to see it in action!  Hehe, I wouldn't mind having an award, it would be fun just to have one me tinks.

    EDIT:  Oh yeah, and I agree that the deleted posts taking away from your rank is a good idea.

    Question:  If we did have it so some of us more active people could have custom ranks then would it be an easy to update thing, like in your account settings, or what?

    we have a WHOLE different name just for the #1 poster

    and the #2 poster

    and #3

    then after that it's classifed by category of number of posts....

    Rasuke: that is possible.  It could be set in your user settings as "If you reach our #1 rank, what do you want to be called?".  It will just be ignored unless you are actually at #1.  I am still not sure if I want this feature or not...it sounds great until people abuse it image

    Murt: not a chance.  Post counts are not being considered.  They are not a gauge of site dedication...in fact a high poster can more easily be a pain for staff.
