Okay, here's a question for folks that I have been wondering about.

1.  Did you play any MUD's before moving onto graphical MMOG's?  If so, which one and what was the genre?

2.  Do any of you still play MUD's AND graphical MMOG's.  If you do, what keeps you going back to MUD's?

I'll answer my own post here to get it rolling....

1.  The first online game I ever played was back around 1995.  It is a mud called Gemstone 3 which is still around today, it is a commercial mud and I played it first on AOL.  It is deep fantasy with all the typical races, lots of magic and lots of fun :)

2.  I do still play muds, probably more than I play MMOG's.  What keeps me going back is that level of interaction that is created when reading text; your mind creates the fantasy instead of interpeting the graphics presented to you.

I'd hate to die twice. It's so boring

I played allot of Door Games back when BBS were in, that would be the late 80's to mid 90's. Mostly Trade Wars, and Barren realms elite. (hardly MUD's) I played Legion of the Red Dragon, that was kinda like a MUD. I also played text adventure games like Zork at that time. But I don't ever see going back to text based games... or Dos based games for that matter. (although I do miss Duke Nukem once in awhile)

I played gemstone 3,and Moved on too dragon realms, then i found a awesome little mud that rules and is really good for an rpger at www.eternal-city.com what draws me back is the fact is they have better imagination of course majority of the people who play everquest in the ages of 14 dont even know whats muds are  muds are the goldenage of online gaming now and if your a hard core rpger then muds are where you wanna be.

I played a couple of MUDs in the early 90s.  I played Gemstone III for a bit and really got into Federation on AOL.  I also played a couple of other net games back in the old telnet days.  The first game I played that I would consider a graphical MUD (basically a MMOG) was the old gold box Neverwinter Nights on AOL.

(BTW, for those of you who don't know this title, the current Neverwinter Nights that Bioware is selling was named after the original game that ran on AOL until 1997...screenshot below)

Back in the days when AOL charged $3.50/hour for access, my NWN habit garnered me a $200+ AOL bill one month. image  I then got in the Ultima Online beta, but lag issues drove me away from that one.  The first modern MMOG I got into was EQ.  And you can say what you want about EQ, but I have yet to find a game that is as immersive and as much fun.

UO when i was playing was laggy as hell. But it opened my eyes to the MMORPGs .

EQ was my next and it made me realise how addictive a game can be .

I like eq its fun and all but the problem is noone rpgs in it anymore very few do games like eq end up be based around the items and who gets the highest lvls unlike back in the muds it was mainly rpg like old nwn's that game rocked on rpg.
