Originally posted by Lord_Barrius Why would you want to consider this? I have seen some of my friends play games with this feature and whe n a member of the group is a bit careless, that person gets hounded on until the next LAN party and sometimes afterwards. Having perma-death merely makes the person responsible look like an amateur player and can be damaging to their rep. I would never suggest such a system be implemented anywhere, least of all any game I play.
Exactly... the people that succeed on a perma death server would have to be master players. That's one of the huge benifits of it... On a normal server ... Incompentent players, no matter how poorly they play will be able to reach the end game and end up with end game equipment. It may take them 5 times as long... but they will still get to the end game.
On a perma death server, the incompentent players would all hopefully die before making it to the end. Thus making it to the end will MEAN something. Does hitting lvl 60 in WoW mean anything? No. Why? Because their are 2million other people that are lvl 60. There is also the added bonus that if you dicide to run and end game duegons with other lvl 10s they would all be good players also.
I DO think Rez spells and shrines should be allowed on a perma death server. That given their is NO reason for a group of conpetent players to Wipe on an instance. Heck give warp spells that can remove a group from a duegon if things get hairy.
People that decide to play perma death servers would most likely have a cap level char on the normal servers to try out new material before chancing it with their hardcore char.
I wish they copied the DnD rules closer, so I answered "yes". being resurrected should be an option, but should be hard to do and require the active participation of your friends.
I agree with Bent in every inch of all his statements. As a former WoW and Diablo player... i have a lot of reasons. I might be repeating most of you, but ill tweak it and add some stuff.
First of all, it roots out the poor players... thats a given and nobodey can complain about that unless your someone who might be considering this exact moment "Do i suck?".
Two of all, Even i, in WoW may get reckless because... hell... what does dieing do to you in WoW. You have to walk. And it MIGHT damage gear. This makes you much more responsible.
Three, this is a big one to me. one day i was sitting around playing WoW dreaming about being a 7331 level 60 and then i though. What would i do then... wow im level 60. Ill get a congragulations from my guildmaster. With perma-death... you have to be leet to hit level cap... the people who hit level cap would be admired. It gives you so much more to work for and such a heightened feeling of accomplishment... Gentlemen im giving myself goosebumbs.
Another thing... im a reguler roleplayer of D&D. with having permadeath... its gives you so much more appreciation and story line. It puts the emmotion into roleplaying.
Ladies and genltmen we roleplay to be heroic, good, bad, evil, and feel something we've never and never will feel and felt. Hence the name Fantasy. I might sound creepy but its true.
MY final statement is that with permadeath only the strong will survive. only the Masters will Truely become EPIC.....

Riddle I'd have to say you have a few good points, but I might offer some counter points.
1) The medium. When you're playing a real time game on the computer like this, you could be killed easily due to circumstances out of your control. Lag, popup windows, power outage, it would be incredibly frustrating to go all the way and then die cause *bing* You've got mail! .
2) This is probably a less important point, but I think with permanent death, you'll turn away alot of the more casual gamers. A single character is far more important to a casual gamer (atleast I'd believe it would be) because they don't play as much as you or I might, and the death of that character would be a much more signifigant impact on said person.
That being said, I believe I read somewhere that DDO will not have permadeath, and in general I think that's probably for the best, as it makes things less complicated, even if it does make it somewhat less challenging.

Well you have to understand... a lot of the things you mentioned on #1 are fixable... however.. yes there are some things it would judt suck to lose everything for a power outage... omg id cry.
Its disappointing to hear there wont be a couple Permadeath servers but hell ill love it anyway...
Make a new char, seal a pact with yourself to deleat the char if you die. And jump in. Haveing fun?
The problem is you cant have the same system in a perma death game, you have to have more hps, less crits, and less diversity. How damageing would one small bug, or a hack be? I se a game where people play in gank squads or solo, just like jedi in swg was for a while. Got no rl friends to form a group with? well then the game wont be for you.
