you're not suppose to get the flu twice a year. If this is true, then your immune system is very weak (or almost non existant)

The issue there is that most people wouldn't know the difference between catching the common cold or having the "flu" if it bit them in the ass and explained itself it short, laymens terms. In my lifetime I think I have had the flu twice. Once was the common nasal/cranial. The other was the stomach variety ( the least pretty of the two let me tell ya ). As for colds? Shite...I get one of those EVERYtime the weather makes a change from being warm to cool. Half of that is sinusitis which then leaves me susceptable to a cold.

In short for people who are unsure, an easy way to tell. If you are sick for less than 5 days it was a cold most likely. If you are sick for 7-14 days and have several days of vomitting or wretching...it was a flu (or Satan possessed you out of sheer boredom as he's waiting for DNF to come out).

"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

Actually, there is a 'Norwegian Strand' that is especially deadly... Aside from the foaming at the mouth and loss of limbs like leprosy, this unique strand makes it's victims die hard conservatives and instantly makes the victim a fan of George W. Bush... Hey, aren't you Norwegian dude? loloh noesOriginally posted by En1GmaThere making an issue out of it because the Avian Flu (which only affects birds) is starting to mutate to be able to infect humans. This strand is deadly because we have no flu "vaccine" for it. It is so new and alien that we have no antiboties. Just this month, the Center for Disease Control was able to map out the virus.
This year's flu is expected to kill 120 million people this year. (which is a very high number for influenza). Avian Flu is so dangerous because not only is the very young, asthmatic, or very old are in danger...but anyone is now.
We'll see Has avian flu broken out in USA? I just thought it was Romania and Tyrkia. Most versions of it aren't dangerous for humans, but the H5N version of it is. But H5N isn't that dangerous either. Last year 120 people in Asia got it and 60 died. But what WHO fears is the H5N1 version of H5N. If a person who has influensa get's the H5N1 it will mutate into a "super virus" wich is capable of killing 120 million people. But it's not that likely to happen and it hasn't happened yet, but they THINK that it might happen. So I don't see what you should fear yet.
Note: You don't have special antibiotics. There are 2 types of antibiotics that are used for everything. If those don't work then the virus is immune to antibiotics. So there is no thing like special antibiotics against a special virus.Originally posted by En1Gma

I thought there were all kinds of antibiotics when it comes to viruses...
I think your talking about penicillin and whatever da hell you call the other one...
But when it comes to viruses, vaccines or anitbodies (anti-biotics) are countless...
Wasn't that anti-bodies are broken up bits of the virus itself that is injected into the human body.
As dead and broken bits of a specific virus enters the body of a person. The immune system in your body collects information on the specific dna strand of the virus. So that next time a virus of the same dna enters your body, your white-blood cells are aware of the virus and fight against it "immediately".
I thought the reason they give flu shots and anti-biotics is to prevent the virus in a body to multiply in case it is not fought off by your immune system. White Blood cells, or your immune system don't reacte to newer viruses because they aren't recognized by your immune system.
Two way you develop anti-bodies in your body is...By evolution. When you are exposed in an environment with a certain hazardous virus for many years, and your body has survived through it...because the immune system reacted to the life-threathing virus before you're DEAD.
Or by getting flu shots and etc...The dead and broken down virus and dna components are noticed by your immune system and that data rests in you till you're dead...So when you contract a virus that you already have had an anti-boitics for your immune system reacts to it fairly fast...and not untill it's too late and you're basically dead.
To recollect anyones memory...I'm sure they've taken alot of shots since they were a kid...some shots you need to take every some years...or some are permanent till you die...
The reason you take all these shots are because your body has no defense against newer, evolved and deadly viruses if you are contracted before given an anti-body.
I can tell you I still have that burn mark from the old-method hot-needle shot...

I thought he meant anti-biotics wich are used after you have gotten the sickness to battle it. If he meant a vaksine then he was correct. A vaksine is what you say it is :)
