  • Not many people really know what the objectives are when you start playing EVE and players coming from most other MMO's assume the objectives are the same or similar to games they have previously played. They aren't. The object in EVE is not to get the highest level character, complete every quest and visit every corner of the game world. In EVE, doing those activities is only a way of achieving the games objectives. So without further ado, here are the game objectives!

    1. Make Money (called Interstellar Kredits or isk)
    2. Make Money faster
    3. Stop others making money as fast as you
    4. Stop others from stopping you from making money

EVERYTHING you do in EVE is just your preferred method of making money. Nothing more. Even PvP players and corporations out in 0.0 space are protecting their money stream (Objective 1) or stopping you from accessing the big money areas (objectives 3 and/or 4).

    Game Mechanics
The game tries to slow you down from making money by using distance (separating where you earn money from where you spend it). The larger distances you are willing to travel usually gives you a higher profit when selling or cheaper goods when buying giving you an edge over your competitors. The game also helps you either directly or indirectly to make money faster (objective 2) by implementing a skills system but it also levels the playing field by basing the skills system on real time and thwarts the 'power levelers'. But the less you play, the less money you can make. So those that play more often will usually be able to buy the better ship faster than a casual player can even though both are able to fly it.

EVE also gives you plenty of opportunity to spend the money you make. Ships are very expensive. The equipment you use on your ship is very expensive. You can usually double the cost of the ship with it's added equipment. Getting your ship and the equipment on it destroyed can be extremely expensive.

    Skills
When you create your character, you are given a decent amount of skill points and can direct those skill points to your chosen method of making money. There are dozens and dozens of skills and more are regularly added. There is no player in the game who has finished learning every skill. After that your skill learning is completely open-ended. If you start the game as a fighter but don't like it, you can switch your skills and do something else more to your taste. There are no classes that limit what your player can do or use. Each skills has 5 levels you can train it in. The easiest skills take 2 weeks or more to max out. More advanced skills take months. Because there are so many skills (there are even skills so you can learn other skills quicker) you can be reasonably confident that you are better at atleast 1 skill than most other players you meet. Even when they have been playing much longer than you.

    The Players
Every player should be looking for ways to make money faster. Trying to think of the thing others didn't and use that to their advantage. It suits those who like to scheme and have calculating minds. They ask themselves questions like: How can I get my goods from point A to point B faster? Can I make more money per hour by doing it this way or that way? And they are a generally friendly bunch too.

If making money (isk) rather than levelling up sounds like your type of challenge, give it a go. It's free for 2 weeks.

    Tip:
Most people find EVE boring. There is no shame in finding the game boring. It's got fun aspects and has the potential to be a lot of fun but one must consider:
Less than 1% of the MMORPG community chooses to play EVE

Therefore it is NOT a game that everyone will enjoy. Try it, give it a fair shot. But if you find it boring after the trial, odds are you won't become enamored of it. The game is very much about patience and it is very much like 'life' in that there are long periods of relative inactivity punctuated by brief periods of action and chaos....

forgive me for being offended, but Twitch isnt for people who want thigns handed to them. ITs not hours of practising, and its is deff not lacking in brain power.

Being actually good at Twitch games requires months/years of practise. It is a VERY large challange. Its a long road, and its very worth it. As for brain power, it uses plenty. Its Cat and mouse, its getting the upper hand, and using it. Outsmarting your opponent and planning ahead.
Its a lot of planning, and split second thinking. Its not easy, nor is it a fast victory.

The reason I didnt like Eve is that there is so little player skill. I cant get in the "zone" and be doing amazing. Its all about the time invested, not about the person abilities of the player.
The fact that no matter how hard I try, I will never be as good as the guy whos been playing 6 months longer.

after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
