You EVE posters just AREN'T getting the point!! The only reason we continue to even TALK about EVE is because of the continuous stream of threads invaded by EVE players pushing the game. (Although it has quietened down recently) EVE dislikers then respond that it is boring...and you guys ALWAYS say, if you don't like it don't play...(And don't worry...trust us...we're NOT playing)
My response to that is...if YOU play...don't spout it on here!
Then we wouldn't have to talk about it. There's an advertisement...and plenty of other information about the game on here...so people who want to play that type of game will find it...but invading every post to plug it just gets annoying.
And I really am beginning to think that EVE players are obsessive and arrogant "to a man". Or maybe another reason, all these posters (with posts in the low low numbers) are really all the same person...which is what I have thought all along...haha...I am a conspiracy theorist of course.

Huh? No one is saying Eve is boring because they don't like it. That makes no sense. The term "I don't like it" isn't used as a reason for something. People give reasons for not liking something. With the case of Eve people are saying they don't like it because it's boring.
Originally posted by hadz That's something I really don't understand, why does a death penalty have to be huge for it to be meaningful. I take care of my character while I'm playing (I really hate dying) because I am trying to picture the character in the story, if they continually die...it's not much of a story is it.Anyway...sometimes I impose my own death penalty (for story reasons), for example in EQ2 I played a dark elf dirge and tried very hard to not let her die. By the time she hit level 22 she hadn't had a death and it was getting quite nerve wracking in some situations because I was striving to keep my no-deaths record. Anyway...eventually she died (I think I was on the phone actually...or at least not concentrating) and I played her a little bit more...and then gave up. Never played her again, she was not "believable" to me anymore...now THAT'S a death penalty. I don't do that all the time, of course, but it was very involving and interesting...and it certainly beat any "game imposed" penalty. (On that subject, there is a "real death" penalty game coming up that I'm interested in playing mainly because of it, and that's "The Chronicle" I think)
That's an intersting point you brought up hadz. It's my opinion that a huge "game imposed" death penalty successfully attaches a meaningful result to both parties, the victim and the killer, of the death. Sure you could do a self-imposed penalty, but how does your attacker get rewarded by your self-imposed penalty? If the attacker doesn't get any meaning from your death, then his actions become reduced to a random ganking.
So I argue that "game imposed" death penalties gives greater meaning to the killer as well. It gives them a purpose greater than a random ganking, giving them a method to work towards a greater goal. When the killer knows that he/she has inflicted a severe blow to the victim's wallet as well to the victim's moral, that killer obtains a sense of accomplishment for their actions. This is the important 2-way street in PvP interaction.
But EVE PVP, much like real life war (I know because I was in the Army), is comprised of:
Sit around and do your mundane day to day stuff - 90% Insane combat action - 10%
(actually in RL it's more like 99.9% vs .1% but in EVE it's a bit more slanted towards combat )
Now: If you have scads of time to play or don't mind spending 45 minutes travelling to distant sectors, YES, you can be in combat more often. But even then it still consists of over 50% waiting for folks to arrive then another 50% of insane combat. Followed by massive downtime/dead time till the next fight.
Personally I find EVE to be a little TOO deep/realistic.
Great great great game. Just very very very boring for folks that don't have the patience for it. It's very slow paced except for PVP combat itself.

True comments Cerrian but I think we're coming at it from different angles. I seldom even consider PvP when I'm thinking (or talking...hehe) about MMOs, so my statements in that post weren't tailored to PvP at all. After all there is no PvP (except duels/arena now) in EQ2, and that's the game I was talking about.
I'm not a fan of PvP because I'm not a big fan of PKing. In MMOs, at least the way they're designed now, PvP doesn't work, mainly because of the fact that a 2 or 3 level advantage or a good gear advantage will sway the result a lot more than any skill on the players part; all it favours is someone who's spent more time in-game. Makes it pointless IMHO; I get no satisfaction beating someone "below" me, and seriously question why anyone else does. And rewarding or penalising someone for something that just comes down to time-spent makes the whole thing seriously flawed; the rich get richer...it's even worse, it's really like Year 6 bullies beating up Year 3 babies for their lunch money.
As to death penalties my preferred type would be EVER-DEATH. In other words if your character dies they're DEAD and you have to start a new character. I'm not talking insta-death, there should be a couple of "chances", but they should be VERY story driven so that the character is still believable. Hmm...I appear to be a RPer trapped in a leveler's body...haha.
Ooh...I better stop hijacking the thread. Mind you, this type of topic needs hijacking, it's been done to death.
I didn't even get to watch these movies because they loaded..... soooooo........ssslllllloooooowwwwwllllllyyyyyy..........
I was also unable to give Eve itself a chance since the graphics mode they were using did some funky stuff to the text, rendering it totally unreadable in certain places. So it could be an average MMO, or it could be a steaming hot shovel of grind. I don't know.
What I do know is that all this pimping of Eve is really annoying. As someone else already pointed out, all those pimping Eve seem to have posts in the lower teens making it appear as though it's the same person. If this is the case, then you need to cut the crap. Why? Because it casts serious doubt as to how Eve got it's top rating. Let the game speak for itself. Let the game promote itself. If it's good, it will grow. If not, then you'll be looking for another game. Keep spamming this thing and you'll piss off alot of people that would have otherwise played the game and liked it. Not to mention the fact that people will start to question the game's rating and then use that against it.
This non-stop fanboism of Eve is the action that causes the reaction of endless posts that Eve is an extremely boring mmo, not the other way around. Eve has been out for a good length of time now. It is heavily advertised on this website. People know about "Eve Online", trust me.
Their two week free trial did nothing for me except either piss me off or bore the hell out of me. It is pretty. I understand the game and what it is about. But it did absolutely nothing for me. Maybe I'm the type that would much rather kill a chicken as you say and pluck its feathers and meat, cook the meat with a cooking skill for food, and use the feathers to make armor or arrows or something then to play eve and float around space for hours upon hours waiting for the next eve fanatic to come blow me to smitherines. Maybe some people prefer the idea of a sword chopping off another players head as to controlling a 43 million ton space ship floating in some galaxy looking for yet another exciting asteroid to mine. With that, maybe some people would much prefer to watch the movie "Braveheart" or "Lord of the Rings" as opposed to watching "Star Trek 17: The Wrath of Ass" or something along those lines... even though both movies have great ratings and reviews.
Eve did nothing for me, but I can understand why the few who probably like the game give it a high score. What I cannot understand is how Eve gets such a high score when it honestly seems like this game would only appeal to a very low percentage of mmo players. Regardless, I don't care that it gets an 8.3 or whatever. That's fine. It doesn't mean however that I think it's a better mmo then AC1 just because AC1 only got an 8.0.
I agree strongly that most of these people who say they are tired of the non-stop trolling of endless threads trying to promote this game is getting very old. Its like it could be a thread about how mining in Ultima Online nets you double the amount of ore in Felucia as on the trammel facet of UO, and there would be 45 posts all about the mining in UO... and all of a sudden someone would come post about how UO mining is gay and that it is much more fun to mine asteroids in Eve cuz Eve is much better and deeper then UO and if you want real PvP come to Eve or some BS. These kind of posts get really old, especially when these posts have zero relevance to the thread topic at hand, and instead just seems like some ultra religious crusade post about how Eve is the best.
I am seriously starting to think that one or two people have made numerous user IDs on this website and are responsible for eve's unrealistic high rating and are all responsible for the endless ranting from low post members about how Eve roxxerz.
The fans of EVE are a frigging cult and if you disagree with them then they get furious that you just can't see things their way. The will eventually dismiss you as a crackpot then come at you a week later trying to convince you that they are still right.
I can understand why people may not like EVE. I haven't been playing long, but its obvious this game lacks action. The traveling is extremely boring. Its nothing to go afk for 20 minutes, and still be traveling or shooting some darn complex. The skill system is kinda wretched, too. For some reason, I do enjoy it. Not sure for how much longer. Its just a waste to take 20 minutes to kill a building or to travel somewhere staring at black space.
EVE (or any other MMORPG on the market) is neither boring nor "not boring" - it is what you make of it. Excitement in a game comes mainly from oneself, since a game either gives you an environment to live that excitement or not - but that is very subjective. You can get bored in WoW, EQ, FF, EVE, [insert any MMO],...
Personally I lived through everything from boredom to excitement to overworked stress in EVE, but it was not the game which changed, but the things I was doing. I think its the same with some people saying WoW has a boring endgame, while others swear they have the best time of their life - all a matter of taste.
And yes, I am too disturbed by EVE fans, who claim, "yay, best game ever, try it out!!!!", but then (sometimes even in the same sentence) say with a slightly snobish attitude "but its not for everyone", "you have to join a corp", "you have to ....blah blah blah" - that is a bit contradicting, to be honest. But I also don't like people coming here claiming to proclaim "the ultimate truth" (which is usually a collection of bad experiences made in the first few hours of gameplay) about a game - yes, that includes starting threads about how boring EVE is after barely making the tutorial.
So please let's leave out these sensless discussions about if a game is boring or not - they really lead to nowhere, except stirring up the shit. Go to back to the game of your choice and most importantly *have fun*

To me (when I played EVE) it was fun and I seemed to run into more mature players in EVE than I find in WOW or even EQ2. While EVE has it's griefers and general pains in the butts, overall it is a good community. The gameplay style is NOT for everyone, it does take time to do things and the sheer adrenaline rush you get from the 10% of the time something is actually happening is highlighted by the 45 minutes it took you just to fly to where the action is.
EVE has its fanboi's that proclaim that EVE is the ultimate game, there is also a group of people that seem to down the game almost as hard as the fanboi's pump it up. EVE is a game and it appeals to many for many reasons, it is unappealing to many for one thing or another. If you try it or have tried it and really do not like it then good for you, if you think it's the best game ever then good for you. I think EVE'S numbers while small compared to WOW, GW or EQ are still impressive considering the original release date of the game (I know they have updated the game, I am also impressed by CCP and what seems like a effort from them to keep the game interesting and the support they give (I wish SOE was half as good).
If CCP came out with a new game today... I would pick up just on thier reputation alone

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
Sorry I happen to be a *mature* person myself. When I am paying $15 a month for a game I expect it to hold my attention, not bore me to the point where I WANT to go do laundry, dishes, cooking. I only play games when I have time to play them. If I have stuff to do around the house then the computer is turned off while I do them.
I always laugh at the arguement that the game is for "mature" players. It's no more for "mature" players than it is for "serious" players. EVE is for players who don't mind paying $15 a month for an AFK game. Sure PVP and flying in 0.0 space isn't something you want to AFK at. But just about anything else in the game is.
