I have a feeling that the user rating on this site have something to do with the advertising mmorpg.com get from the game companies.
WoW doesnt have any banners here, and although its the most popular mmorpg it is third...
...behind Guild Wars, which can hardly be classified as an mmorpg and objectively lacks in depth and community (Very important factors in a mmorpg), but always has a banner in the home page...
...which is behind EVE-Online, a niche game that very many ppl find boring that also always has banners on the home page.
Comments
very, very, very suspiscious
here's my take on it - WoW is like the best mmorpg made to date, even though its not perfect, so people know about it.
most of the games on this site that have banners, are begging for more players. see, they are either so old, so crappy, so boring, or so unknown, that they need to be advertised. no one wants to play them them anymore so they have to do whatever they can to try to sucker people into playing them.
The ratings are legit. Eve online hasn't always been #1. It has actually just gotten up there about a month ago and i've seen the Eve online ads here ever since I can remember.
Eve's always been up there for over a year. It fell when WoW first came out but now it has come back up. There is reason for suspicion, but I think we have to think about.... fanboys here.
I'll bet there are SEVERAL values of 0 for WoW. People who want to bring the average down just because they didn't like the game. While no game deserves a 0, and especially not WoW, idiotic fanboy's will behave in an idiotic fashion.
There isn't much talk about EVE on here.. and I can't see why many people would zero rate it to bring it down anyway. Mind you, if the players keep spamming EVE-PRIDE some people might get annoyed...
Then there is always the chance that MMORPG.com staff mess around with them. Not pointing fingers here.. but it's always possible.
And think about the hype levels. Why is it that the average is always roughly 1.0 lower than game ratings? Is it that people don't use the 10 value to hype a game as much? Or is MMORPG.com messing around here too?
you've got a point, all the hyped games are 7.2 and 7.1. surely at least one game would be hyped more than another.
even the currently released mmorpgs ratings are very close. its not like one is way ahead or below another.
odd to say the least.
Thing about EVe is it isn't a love it or hate it kinda game like WOW etc etc.
With EVE you think "WOW! something new a kool mmorpg, but it's not for me" or "WOW! i love this game"
So i just think people don't dislike it, they just find that its not for them and give it a good rating
Games by SOE are always gonna be hated

Well it's a fact that MMORPG.com messes with the ratings.
En1gma stated in another thread I read that MMORPG.com somehow removes or diminishes ratings of 1 and 10.
When you do this, that leaves middle of the road ratings which will prop up a mediocre game and keep it in the positive, especially with a higher vote count which is more difficult to impact. This is especially true in regards to the removal of 1 ratings, since people tend to rate a game they dislike as a 1, while persons who like a game tend to give it a broader range, 7-10.
Negatives always impact humans more than positives in life, as we tend to take positive experiences in stride, holding them to be the norm and expected, unlike negative experiences which make us more vocal and emotional which would lead to a stronger condemnation, and thus rate a game we dislike as 1.
Some 1 and 10 ratings may not be justified, but that is subjective, and to dismiss them is messing with the ratings. Just leave the ratings alone and let the chips fall where they may.

Yes, because just because a game is the most popular it is automatically the best. If mmorpg.com based their ratings on popularity, WoW would be at a 10.0 and everyone else would be way below. Eve would be around a 5 or something. Games aren't rated on popularity, they are rated on quality, and according to mmorpg.com, EVE Online is better than WoW. Some may disagree, but the general consensus is this.
Nothing suspicious about it, WoW was nr1 for about 4-5 months, which is the time it takes for a person with average IQ to realize what a pile of crap it really is. Same goes for guild wars, after the novelty wears off the same players that fanboyed it come back in droves and rate it low. Eve on the other hand you either find boring for the first week or you stick with for years.

I might as well just copy/paste from my last comment on the topic:
I happened to follow a link to the EVE forums the other day (probably from this site)...and they are FULL! of complaints about lag...continuous complaints from back in mid 2004 (link after link to complaints about lag...within the EVE forums themselves).
Yet...when you look at the EVE ratings...lag (or lack of it I'd assume) comes in as the 2nd best feature of those rateable (with an average score of 8.7). It's obvious from this that long-term, devoted, EVE players are NOT ranking this correctly, and thereby falsely skewing the ratings.
I mean the other day they had an 80 on 200 fleet battle (that's 280 people in one area) that crashed 50% of the EVE universe and also crashed the login server (meaning anyone who didn't crash out...but logged out couldn't log back on either).
Intentionally false ratings...anyone...anyone...Bueller?
Gawd hadz, isnt it obvious? Its the norm for every single rating on this site.
When people love a game, they give it 10's across the board.
When people hate a game, they give it 1's across the board.
If you think 8.7 for eve's lag is bad, then the 7.7 WoW has in community is a freakin travesty.
I hope that clears any confusion on your part.
And show me one mmo where 280 people can meet in one area and not wtfbbq the servers.

Id rather just say they are crap and leave the rest to your imagination.

Why do you automatically assume that all people are the same as yourself, just because you give games you like 10s and games you don't like 1s doesn't mean everyone else is a fool too. I know I rate stuff fairly. I mean my average for EVE came out at 4.3 and my WoW average is 7.8 neither is a 1 nor a 10.
Oh and 280 people in one area happens ALL the time in a game like WoW. Ironforge and Orgrimmar are prime examples. And Ironforge and Org have a lot more happening than some dead system in EVE; there's auction houses, trainers, mailboxes, trading, banks, crafting...it's huge! (And let's not forget that WoW has actual graphics with collision detection, cloth-simultations, multiple character models and overlayed armor, as opposed to EVE which has mostly standard ship models with one or 2 turrets tacked on) And while WoW does lag every now and then in the big cities (quite rarely when I was playing, but I know others were complaining) I doubt it even comes close to crashing the servers.
C'mon pirrg, stop raving and engage in some thoughtful argument for once.
280 players in one place? What ARE you smoking? 60ish players at MOST in major hubs like ogrimmar and ironforge and even then the lag is unbearable. I have experienced 100+ players in those early release crossroads raids and let me tell you, it wasnt pretty. And dont talk about its technical aspects as neither you nor i have any clue about that.
I didnt say i follow that norm, i merely said most people do. Considering eve players are way more mature then the average wow player, id say eve has the more accurate rating of the two.

I've seen 50 people standing in the auction house alone in IF (not including all the pets), and then another 50 to 80 standing in the main "foyer" near the mailbox, then another 20 in the bank, 50 to 80 near the forge and the griffons, that's already getting up there...
I'm no graphics-meister...but I do know that WoW's graphics would take a hell of a lot more processing power than EVE's. Just look at the complaints on EVE's own forums...there are actual game/graphics programmers on those forums complaining that EVE's code is not written well enough for the relatively easy to render graphics that exist in the game...nuff said!
i trust the ratings to be fair and accurate. i assume that some guys here think that whoever is up there at no.1 is the best(although i definitely think that Eve is one h--l of a game when it comes to space/sci-fi game)i think its not just popularity but quality thats been put into consideration. or it might be that WOW gamers are getting pretty bored with WOW no matter how good the game is.
They both have lots of fans.
but wow has lotsa haters, who will vote 1 just to lower the rating.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Like someone already stated, if you vote just straight 1's it probably won't affect the ratings. Same would happen if you vote straight 10's.
Since youre going to spew blatant lies im going to leave this argument with these words;
Its not the games fault that it took you over 11 months to realize that no matter what you did you got outsmarted at every turn. The game isnt responsible for any grief sustained by your fellow players. Im glad that you found a game more on your level, enjoy it. Eve has the most dedicated following any mmo has ever seen and they will be enough to fuel it for years to come. Ratings on a site like this means little to eves prosperity.
I played wow and frankly, i dont see how anyone with an attention span above that of a 12 year old kid with ADD could find it "fun" for more then a week, but to each their own i guess.

Im over twice the age of 12 and alot of people I play with on WOW is 3 times the age of 12. WOW definitely has the most kiddies on the game and on some servers the community suffers dearly from it, but for people who like the lore this game is perfect for them. If you want to talk about dedication look at the SWG fans that has stuck through all the derastic changes to the game. Thats true dedication. EVE from what I know hasnt has such changes to test the loyalty of their customers. Im not an EVE hater, but neither do I go on the forums and state that someones mentality has to be that of a child to play certain games. Each game has their mature and immature crowd. Its up to you to find which crowd you belong with and play the game.
