Scaramoosh... I am curious... What does liking the previous SWG system have to do with liking or not liking the new system? I have played SWG since Beta phases and I enjoy both systems.
I think the NGE will be a good thing for SWG in the long run. There is no doubt they will lose a percentage of the old timers. This isn't usually due to hating the new system, but due to feeling betrayed by the introduction of a new system without direction from the players, or even listing it on an "In production" schedule.
I really think they have a ton of work ahead of them integrating the new systems throughout the game, and I am really disappointed it wasn't seamless. I didn't like having a huge change like that and then having the changes work in some places and not others. It was also really hard to find justification in some of our items just not working at all and no in-game compesation to cover it.
Anyway... As I was saying... The NGE will draw in new players and bring some old players back to see what is happening. Unfortunately it may scare away old players due to some unfortunate issues, but I think they will keep a good percentage of new players as long as they fix things quickly.

I can agree with you on that. I don't think it will be huge, right now. Hopefully they have something up their sleeves for marketing push.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas Arts had a Star Wars TV Series in their magic hat.
I don't think it will, but I would really hate to see SWG go the way of the AC2. The changes are *not* bad like some of the people in here like to preach. They are actually really pretty good, and I am having a lot more fun with combat right now. I haven't been in crafting yet though. They just need to fix some issues and make sure everyone is taken care of in the game. You don't want even one class to be so gimped people want to leave.
Funny, alot of people who have played all three versions, and still have their accounts, seem to like the Pre-CU build more than the other two combined.
You're right. Approximately 40 people out of 10s of thousands is a "lot". I am sure there are more, but a forum count is not a good indicator of success or failure unless your entire community contibutes to the forum. Statisically speaking, only about 10% of a community will contribute to the forums. Of that 10%, only a percentage of them are vocal. This doesn't mean you should discount their thoughts and ideas, but it does mean you can find yourself in trouble if they are the only way you make decisions.
The producers spend time looking at forums, in game reaction, and actual numbers when they make decisions. From what I understand, the initial thought of the NGE came about because players were complaining the combat system wasn't interactive enough. So, SOE is listening... However, the people complaining before didn't like how they implimented the suggestion.

Of those who took the time to respond to that particular thread, the overwelming majority desires a Pre-CU server. Those who didnt respond either didnt care enough, or dont know what Pre-CU was/is and thus dont have an opinion either way.
For people, and a sizeable amount at that, to still be calling for a Pre-CU server/s after 6+ months should tell you, and SoE, something.
40 people is not a sizeable amount. More than 40 people work on the game.
However, it does tell me something. Just like Pre-Trials of Atlantis DAoC, there will always be people that like previous versions. This isn't a case study in gaming, it is a fact of human nature. Not everyone will like the changes. In this case, the game has been the same for years, and there was a sudden shift in game mechanic. People will get vocal, and some will get angry. If nobody got angry about *any* type of change in the game, I would be worried the earth was taken over by clones or something.

Fadinaway, do you really think that SWG is all about combat? I don't think so! The "First-CU"touched only the combat and that was ok since the rest of the game remain unchanged, but the "Second-CU" made drastic changes like the removal of item decay system! This made all crafters redundant! SWG had one of the best crafting engines in the MMORPG industry! Without its crafting, SWG is just another combat oriented MMORPG like WOW for example.
Unfortunately is seams that the majority of players wants exactly this - simple interface, combat oriented MMORPG in Diablo2 style
You really need to take some time then and look around the offical forums.
That is only one thread. There are now weveral more which have cropped up asking for a "Classic" server or 10.
Again, that was just the folks that took the time to respond, in that thread. If you think thats all the people who want a Pre-CU server, something just aint clicking in your head.
That also doesnt count the many people who no longer have access to post on the SWG threads due to accounts running out or were out right canceled.
Your welcome to like which ever build you like, but to say that SoE wouldnt get alot, yes I do mean ALOT, of people to return to SWG by simply opening up a Pre-CU server shows how out of touch you are, and maybe always have been, to the SWG community all along.
Antoan, I agree. The changes did hurt crafters in the game. Especially the non-decay change. I am a big fan of trade skills in any game. My statement didn't say anything about SWG only being combat though. I just said I enjoyed the changes, and I enjoyed the game before the changes. I really enjoy the combat, and as I understand it, that was one of the main reasons for the changes. They wanted the game to have a more 'epic action' feel to it. Once they get the bugs worked out, I think they have done that.
Blkcat: I have no doubt the official forums have a lot of people screaming. Your statement was based on that thread. I don't doubt opening a pre-CU server would bring back a lot of people. Defining a lot is a problem though. 1000 people (a lot) would not justify a new server. If it were to bring back 10,000 people, I am sure they would consider it to be able to support another server. Maybe even 5,000 which would probably be enough to keep a server at mid load during peak hours.
I may have misread what I said, but I don't believe I said SWG wouldn't get a lot of people if they opened a pre-CU server. I said 40 people wasn't a lot, and I implied forum numbers do not represent a majority. I also stated they shouldn't be discounted because they aren't a majority, but making decisions based solely on forum input was dangerous.
I would definitely be interested in a count of people requesting that type of server and relate that to the actual number of people playing the game, or registered for the game. If I remember correctly, there were about 350,000 registered users of SWG. So if even 3,500 people said they would come back for pre-CU, that would only be 1% of the total population. Hitting 10% would be a really attractive number at 35,000 (which is more than some other games doing well out there.)
Overall I am just disagreeing with your statements. I am not disagreeing there are things to be worked out. I am disagreeing this is the end of the world. I could be wrong, and it wouldn't surprise me. However, just like you guys, I am entitled to my opinion without persecution. I don't feel you are touched in the head for your opinion, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with you.
Never said you were touched in the head. I said that if you believed that opening a "Classic" server wouldnt bring alot of people back to play SWG then you were out of touch with the Community.
As far as alot. True, its a subjective word and hard to get a count on how many accounts they might get returning, but from the limited data that can be gleened from the offical forums alone, not counting sites such as this or IGN, one could assume that 5k would be easy to accomplish. I'm willing to bet that 10-15K would be closer to the mark.
I highly doubt that SWG ever had a consistant subscriber base of 350k, even before the first CU. It might have peeked at 350k in one or two months, but those numbers never stayed there for long. People come, people go, its the nature of MMO's as a whole. While no one can say for sure, one look at the server loads right after the CU told the tale of how many stuck around through that fiasco. I'm talking within the first 2 weeks before SoE had a chance to monkey around with the server load code. Same holds true today, though to a lesser extent. I've seen several screenshots of the server loads Post-NGE and they show the majority as Light to Very Light.
"Classic" servers, however, would appeal more to those who are die hard fans of the game. Those who would continue to put down their hard earned money for a p2p MMO month after month after month. After all, if you had not gotten the game by mid 05, chances are you never were going to get it and stick with it. Game had already been out for 2-3 years.
Business wise, it makes little to no sense not to put up a "Classic" server. The code would be easy to replicate, even if they didnt have a copy of it. After all, how many copies of the origional code are there laying around people's houses right now being used as coasters or worse?
Put up both versions for a side by side "taste test". See which one wins out.
dont you just love how when the thread is pro-NGE the forums repesent a decent chunk and opinion of the servers but when its anti-NGE all of a sudden the forums are just 10 -20 loud people?
often wondered how the pro NGE people know what is or isnt on a forum.
The anti crowd post - usually backs up with SS, movies ,and long detail posts of whats wrong and how to duplicate a bug/explot. then followed by an insult to a dev or smed ot torres.
a pro nGE post is usualy what needs to be done to fix it cause it broken now but gosh i love it and its awesome but please fix this list of 50 things kisses devs. ( odd how its sooo awesome but uh heres a LOOOOOONG list of broken stuff )
then there are the 20% you know the 20% that no matter what happens they say
' YOU AALL THE SUXS !!!
those exist on both sides.
wierd how spin is done. i have yet to see a NGE post on WHY this is good or fun. they all give the exact same reason , its strategic or diverse or starwarsy. no substance just those same 3 reasons with zero elaboration to make me want to log in and see if its strategic diverse or starwarsy.
everyone pro NGE says good in the long run - why?
everyone prg NGE says its diverse? - how?
Strategic - again how?
fun - doesnt matter cause me and you will have different views on fun so i dont care if your having fun or not, has zero relationship to wether i will or not.
nothing on the whys. The pro NGE-posters wont answer these cause SOE hasnt told them in an offical letter is about the only thing i can come up with.
The reason I think this:
is every pro nge post is almost an exact copy of a SOE press release the wording isnt even different 75% of the time.
this isnt about pro vs anti NGE this is abvout why I ( me ) feel this way. take it as you will.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Whats also kinda funny is how the Pro-whatevers are touting up the few posts by John and the Dev's. As if what they said was something new or an example of SoE turning over a new leaf.
Sorry, but John's letter was almost a carbon copy of the letter he posted right after the CU.
"Trust us, tell us whats wrong, keep paying, we will get it fixed eventually".
The CURB was suppost to be "better" for SWG for the "long haul". If it was so much better, then why after only 6 months was it scrapped for a different version? Um, maybe because the 80% of the folks who said it was crap on the TS's were right?
Guess I should thank SoE and John for one thing though. Saved me 6 months worth of fee's and gave me the motivation to go out and try other, better, games.
Originally posted by Teala If this game is around in two years, not only will I admit I was wrong...I'll fly to where ever you are and let you have your way with me. How's that? If SOE continues to not listen to its player base the game is as good as dead. If they do a 180, then it might survive. SOE is not one to back down though...and this time it will be their undoing.

On Farstar you would struggle to get 20 ppl for a group lol
I went back to SWG on the weekend to try out the NGE, having last played in early 2004. I was pretty shocked by the low populations on FarStar and Chimaera. I went to Theed and all I found were three AFK entertainers in the cantina and two jedi near the spaceport, one of whom was LD. I don't have any axe to grind about the NGE, in fact I like some aspects of it but after exhausting my meagre funds flying around the galaxy looking for someone within my (low) level range to group with, I gave it up as a lost cause and cancelled my account. New players need other new players to group with and the game doesn't seem to be attracting them in sufficient numbers. Perhaps they should all be funnelled onto a new pristine server. When the only players you do see are a handful of high level vets, it just serves to remind you of what a long and lonely grind you have ahead of you.

That is if your actually listening.

The "First-CU" touched only the combat and that was ok since the rest of the game remain unchanged, but the "Second-CU" made drastic changes like the removal of item decay system!
Cheers, Antoan
Same statement holds true for SoE.

My money is on "Classic".
dont you just love how when the thread is pro-NGE the forums repesent a decent chunk and opinion of the servers but when its anti-NGE all of a sudden the forums are just 10 -20 loud people?
often wondered how the pro NGE people know what is or isnt on a forum.
Conclusion to it all...
The game isnt even worth playing when it was free...
=> Horizons : Empire of Istaria <=
Rvlion, Dralion, Sslion. (Retired due to bad management and service of GN)
=> Star Wars Galaxies <=
Dralion the Human (Cancelled 2 hours after playing the "improved game")
oh i just saw you dancing lol...i saw someone post your "virtual dance for the boys" ...nice song pic!
lol...then it dawned on me AFTER it was over it was YOU!! AHA!!!!
faxx
p.s. weren't you on bria? or another?
So all the pro-nge people, go to coronet or theed, right now, tell me exactyl how many people you see at the starport or anywhere in the city. Pre-Cu easily in the hundreds, all scattered in the catinas, the bazzar, starport and the medic rooms<-- Good ole days of training medic, healing up the waves of combat people after they died from rancors, huge ass black bars and doing it for free
I miss the groups of 20, why in the hell they even take that out
BOOYAKA!
