Sorry to post this here, but I dont know where else to put it.
I loved SWG, but the NGE was a major F in the A. Since cancelling I have been lost! Does anyone out there know of a game with the kind of skillpoint/profession system SWG used to have? I dont even care if its an all combat game.
This is not an invitation to flame me. No, I don't care if you like the NGE. And no, just because I left doesn't mean I'm trying to get you to quit. I just want to talk to anyone out there who left for similar reasons and found a replacement they like.

Hi friend.../hug....i know your pain.
for now, I'm on the Elune server (WoW) with my entire old guild......
UNTIL....Star Trek Online comes out.....yes...it's well over a year away, but my friends and I all stick together.....even tho wow is really a dumbed down game compared to SWG.....sadly, wow blows away SWG in the bug department.....
Wow is ok if u have friends....so was any other game for that matter....

WoW is great if you have good friends or a good guild playing with you. Also EQ2 and DAoC are good games out now, and the DAoC Epic version is out with one price for all expansions. Asherons Call is a good game too, and City of Villains is an AMAZINGLY polished and fun game, with character creation that could keep you busy and happy for an entire weekend, but there's no loot or gear.
For me, the best replacement for SWG has been the NGE.
To the original poster, I've tried them all, and even in its current state, I've yet to find anything with the variety of SWG. However, I tend to recommend Ryzom to people. It needs A LOT more content and the new PvP stuff isn't my style, but it is pretty polished what's there and the upcoming expansion expansion allows people to create their own content (to some degree). It's got a very open ended skill system, and the playerbase is generaly quite nice. There is a lot to like about the game, but it's also fairly empty and grind heavy with precious little variety, but it is the closest there is to what SWG was like at launch.
I've been waiting on Fallen Earth, taking with other refugees (come join us!). Playing a little Anarchy Online (For Free!) to pass the time. Gonna play City of Villains over winter break (schools internet blocks it and dolts can't fix it) and see what its like. Other than that, just hold on, and find something else that suits your play style.
Waiting For: something good
Games Tried: SWTOR, Star Trek Online, EQ, EQ2, Earth and Beyond, Planetside, Lineage 2, Eve Online, WoW, City of Heroes, City of Villians, Auto Assault, Fallen Earth
Star Wars: Galaxies - Ibra Olasi (Valcyn Server) [Dead, screw you SOE]
I am trying out Eve Online using the 14 day trial. It's totally different, but it's been fun so far.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Since the NGE, I have been playing CoH/CoV. Both are good, but they lack any real depth or content.
Tomorrow, I am going to try DAoC.
But ya...Im in the same boat you are in. Ive been playing SWG for 2 years, and its hard to find a replacement.
recently a friend who plays CoH/CoV (big time vet there) gave me CoV for my b-day. i was planning on sticking through to the end with SWG, but i gotta tell you,
CoV/CoH PvP is just ridiculously fun.
i'll give it that the game lacks depth. there's no real pull going on. no great catharsis that you have with games like SWG and, frankly, MxO. They started a universe from scratch, and with that comes problems with getting players involved with a storyline. With SWG and MxO, it's easy to get involved b/c you already know the whole backstory and have great movies to back the games up. With these games, yeah, it's harder.
However, I forsee a lot of good things going on with these games now that the villain aspect is out there. there's gonna be lots of competition. lots of heroes and villains duking it out in epic battles (or so we hope). And from what I've seen with my friends who have played CoH since launch, it takes a while, but you eventually get a good idea as to what's going on.
However, if PvP is your thing, i think that this is a great game to get in on. It's all I do in these games, really, and I gotta tell you hunting jedi/the GCW (or lack thereof) pales in comparison to the PvP zones they have in Cities. good god that's intense stuff!
*ahem* there is a rumor that theres a grp of disgruntled swg fans who are coders modlers and skinners with game develpoment skills who have banded together to work on a mmo that is based on teh precu swg skill tree with the post cu ham style and some other major fixes to combat, however seeing that this is a small team it would take time before any proof is found or any goos evidence is found http://media.putfile.com/mmorpgdemo
but then again...
The months before I was banned for forum misuse on the Kauri server , I defended SWG against an influx of WoW beta players recruiting players in own forum. When I was banned I was without a game for less then 24 hours , WoW is a much better game then SWG for many reasons , that is why it has 4 time the number of unique players then All of the SOE games combined.
But don't take my word on it , just ask Chris Kramer , SOEs Director of Communication "World of Warcraft is completely owning the online game space right now," and " There are a lot of other online games that are just sucking wind right now because so many people are playing WOW." Come over to WoW and enjoy the reasons why WoW pwneds SOE!

Jump on the bandwagon you mean?
I still play SWG but am also spending time playing CoV since I got 3 months free and a copy of the game from a mate. Might as well not let it go to waste. It isnt bad if you want something almost completely linear and story driven.

I agree with daoc try classic server they are busy
but if into sc fi do not rule out AO it is free to play now and there offering a great price on there series of expansions.
There are 2 servers they are busy in most areas. In the entertainment district there is a bar and everyone can dance about 6- 8 dances. Folks gather there chat lots form teams or just mingle.
There is individual instances which one can do there entire game without bugging anyone else and or there is outdoor hunting too. There are also team mission booths so it is farily easy to find groups
If you loved pre cu ui you will find some very familar uihere as well. THere is a mix of skills and levels but you can mix match the skills you want .
Missions you choose your own rewards which is nice and the slider for easy hard works well mobs conned correctly too
The fan base very loyal to it and they have some strong guilds there too.
Oh there is both formal clothes and armor too , and pvp for those folks too

no the numbers are drawing me back in...
*in a positive, friendly and hehe sort of way, of course.
Pre-cu swg was the all time best mmorpg, there is no replacement now and nothing in sight for the next few years, unless someone is secretly working on a new game. Scraping pre-cu swg goes against all logic, from a business or gaming point of view. I'm still amazed no one got fired for that decision.
If one of my employees came to me and said "we're gonna scrap our biggest cash cow and replace it with this one, a new design that none of our current customer want. We're gonna lose most of our long term customers but we might pick up some new ones in the process"
I'd get rid of this guy real quick !!
Zoey,
Have you played AO? I was looking at that one, but was wondering if it is any good. The other MMO out there really don't appeal to me. To me WoW and EQ2 seem to look like the same style of game and the fantasy games like that really don't appeal to me. And before anyone flames me about WoW and EQ2 not being the same, I know this but they pretty much have the same character classes. I'm also looking at CoH and Cov. Trying a free trial of CoH I got from CGW.

Im in the exact same position as you. I started SWG a day after it went live, and played without iteruption up until the NGE came out. It became more than a game, the community there became a part of my life. No, It didnt consume it as I still had a very productive work and social life as well. But, SWG was the way that I chose to spend the personal time that I reserve for myself. When it was so rudely ripped out of my life, it left a hole in my time and yes in my heart, as I had grown quiet attached to my friends online.
Anyway, I digress. Since the NGE, I have tried EQ2, WOW, and COH, and while im still giving WOW and COH a chance, my initial impressions arent good. Both WOW and COH are well made games that seem to accomplish what they set out to do, but neither are what im looking for long term. I have to admit that they are mildly entertaining, if mindless, and will suffice for short-term entertainment. But, im looking for a new world to immerse myself into.
Its only been two weeks, but im beginning to get desperate, lol. I was beginning to wonder if SWG was just an anomaly, and that maybe other MMO's couldnt offer what i needed. While im not sure, I have hope for Roma-Victor and Dark and Light, we will see. Additionally, ive heard good things about EVE, but I hesitate to get into a game so far along.
"The man who exchanges Liberty for Iconic classes is a fool deserving of neither." - Me and Ben Franklin
Lol. Ditto. Fantasy isnt my cup of tea.
CoV is good. I'm personally waiting to try Pirates of the Burning Sea, and Roma Victor. Both are totally new genres of MMORPG's, and so far both companies have been responsible about informing the potential player bases and giving insights into development.
Best of all, SOE doesn't have their dirty paws in either.
But, those won't be out until march.
I tried EVE. It was interesting for about 45 minutes. Then I quit my free trial. It's incredibly boring.
Pre-CU SWG was the best.
NGE Refugee.
Well if you want a replacement in SWG style i would suggest AO.It is closest to SWG that i can think of.
Eve online is another good sci-fi but totally different from what u knew in SWG.
If you are willing to go out of the sci-fi scene then EQ2 and WoW are definately worth looking into.
Also both are new games so starting off is not hard in them.

well if your looking for sci-fi EVE has a 14 day trial with no CC. Its a laid back sorta paced game ( read no ego shooters need apply) and its skill based , where you earn skills in real time. Right now im playing around with it and am gonna give it a 90 day go.
Its pretty much you as a space ship , you cant ever get out and walk around. you learn things to get better mods for your ship or run a business or haul cargo or hunt pirates or player bounties. It supposedly takes 3 years real time to learn every skill in the game currently but new skills are being added soon. Wow free upgrades what a novelty.
It does get tedious tho when you have to fly long distances i mean real long distances , i did a mission to deleiver some papers 12 systems away it took 30 real minutes to fly there , but you can alway hit auto pilot and go do something else.
HUGE learning curve and very intimidating when you 1st get in , but the tutorial is a few hours ( yes hours) long , and teh 1st agent missions for teh storylie is ALOT of running around so dont expect much fighting in the 1st day or two.
if you get in pay attention to the tutorial , 1 bug with it uncheck podkill in autopilot ,its broken atm so you cant warp while it checked, and buy a dang shuttle for the 1st story line mission because its twice as fast on those long flights as your rookie ship, and its cheap and disposable ( you can sell it back for about 50% of its value when done).
its not fast paced combat as sometimes its several capital ships duking it out. but the frigates and destroyers running around fight quickly its burn or die in space.
But i may also be overly optimistic atm because its new to me , but i know ill be ok for next 90 days figuring it out.
anyway free 14 day here from mmorpg.com so grab an acocount and give it a try if your into the space thing. ( think EnB but done much better).
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Everquest 2 if you prefer a traditional level-based, quest-oriented MMORPG. Some quests are so good that they compete with single player games.
Dark and Light (prelude releasing at 8th December) sounds interesting and close to the sandbox ideas. I hope that its PvP and territorial capture proves fun and it's prolly a very good game to role play on.
EVE Online is an excellent game for strategic PvP and its freedom on what you can do as a player. Its original skill system is very nice as well. Its PvE is repetitive though and only used as a currency grind.
Saga of Ryzom is certainly worth a look. The leveling system is nice and their world is quite original and very nice to explore.
Matrix Online will get a combat revision. I know that thought scares SWG players, but the current combat system really does suck and definetely needed a change to have balanced, fun combat. The revision sounds promising and when it's live (public test this December), it will make the game worth to play.
Currently playing:
* City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
* City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.
Most people that I know (including me) are moving from SWG to Dark & Light (DnL).
DnL offeres:
- continious huge world with insane graphics (be prepared for hardware upgrade)
- no instanced dungeons
- good crafting possibilities (more than 42 professions)
- player driven economy (items do decay)
- good storiline suitable for roleplaying
