Figured, "Why not"

Yeah thats what I said to myself when I saw it on the shelf.

I was at best buy buying my last Christmas gifts for the loved ones, when I saw the starter kit sitting there. I was like....hmmmm....

Now, I played the first day this game came out way back when...played for a couple of months. Then I decided I didn't want to play a game that was a glorified chat room with a nice terrain negotiater. So I split. Moved on....and on.....and on....from game to game....

For the last couple months I haven't been playing any MMORPG other than dabbling with a couple of free ones.

I have been keeping up with all the latest hate/hype for this game and decided that the truth probably was somewhere in the middle of all the arguements. In the end, I decided $20 bucks wasnt too much for me to toss out to see if I would like this new version of the game. I hated the original version so much for its total lack of vision, that I figured maybe this was more my speed. To my suprise, when I checked out at the counter, it rang up as $15. So even better.

Anyway, I have been playing the last couple days now, and I haven't gotten too far, just a little ways into Tattooine. But I have to say I was very impressed with the whole spacestation thing. I did everything I could possibly do. And it was alot of fun. The game definately feels more Star Wars-ish to me. The interface and gameplay are not quite what I am used too, but its not hard to get used to, and after awhile I didn't even notice.

Alot of what some of the vets described as "game breaking" so far seems to be a great exageration to me. Just use a little common sense and patience and things work out fine.

Now maybe things get a whole lot worse higher up in the levels. I wouldn't know. But at the same time, this lower end is their newest direction, and if its a sign of things to come, then it would seem that adjustments to the mid and end game are in the works.

And if I have to buy the expansions later, yeah its not the best scenario for me, but the extra money wont make or break me, when I have to shell out for RotW and ToOW. MAybe if people wait a little while their might be a combopack in the works. Though you would think they would have had that out for the Christmas rush.

Now I am not saying this game is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Honestly, no game I have ever played lived up completely to my expectations. So every game is a compromise. And I have played pretty much everything. But so far, this NGE seems to deliver to me a better star wars game than the original did.

I am not hating on the "vets". I am sorry the game is gone for you, but its a better game now for me. And if they pull it out from underneath me the way they did you, well then...no big deal. Off I go to my personal NGE...the Next Game Experience.

In summary, I like it so far. Its better than I thought, though I will admit my expectations were very low as I had no love for the original game. But it has been a pleasent suprise for my $15.

Best of luck.

I did the same thing but I was at wal-mart and remembered seeing the commercial that day. Picked up the total experience and so far i'm enjoying the game much more than the first few months of it's launch. I can understand as a former die-hard UO player that I'd probably be pissed if the game i loved completely did a 180 like SWG did. Fortunately for me, i didn't decide to retry this game until recently.

Thought you would like it Doom, you seem to, like me, try things and not listen to the Doomsayers. It's just great fun and will get better and better. If you get stuck at all pm me, be specific, I'm sure I can help.

Yeah, I tend to give most games a fair shake. Only rarely would I avoid a game just out of word of mouth. Maybe that combined with my impressions of features/graphics/etc...

I am glad I gave this another shot, its been fun so far. I finished the first string of quests on Tattooine dealing with the Hutts. It was cool.

No collision detection can be a bit of a pain in the ass, and sometimes it seems I get a delayed aggro from mobs I had passed a long time ago. But neither is a major issue I can't work around, and maybe it will get addressed, who knows. As far as lag goes, no issue. But I play late at night.

Out of curiousity, which server are you on?

I'm telling you, people returning to this game are actually having fun. I was on the phone with two of them tonight that just came back. One even bought the new Starter Kit and opened a second account after trying it.

The publish is excellent imo. It's really going places, regardless what those naysayers are saying.

God, I never thought I would ever hear myself saying that.

To me, this game went from purely neutral to very positive in one day. I am impressed. If they stick to their guns and finish it, I'll be here playing.

Wepps, you've always been pretty apologetic of what SOE does with this game, so I'm not surprised by your overall comment.  But the above statemet really did!  If for you all that it takes to bring this game from neutral (hardly, abbismal crap is more like it!) to very positive was a mediocre patch that, as always, screwed up more things than it fixed.  Then you must really be easily amused aren't you???

Hey!  I got the latest entertainment gizmo to sell you!  It's a shoelace!  And it's only $59.95!

I have said from day 1 of my review when I posted it that the NGE isn't a bad game, its just unfinished.

IF they finish what they started it could be a really good game.

It's just not my style. I don't want fixed learning paths that I can't influence. I don't want 9 fixed classes with no ability to dabble. I want an open ended skill system.

That said: The first 30 levels of the NGE are pretty awesome. I enjoyed them even though it's not really my style of MMO. IE: I won't pay for it. It's not till CL30 hit that I started griping about the game in force. The lag issues, as others are saying, have been fixed now (thank god... that was awful). They are patching quest content into ROTW which is nice... but I detest that in order to get the quest content you have to buy an expansion or be forced to grind to go up in levels. They need to patch the quests in the MAIN GAME first so that people can advance WITHOUT buying an expansion. But that's just my personal opinion. Evidently others don't mind spending $25 extra just to get access to the upper 50 combat levels. And then another $30 for the last 10.

NGE isn't a BAD game... it was just poorly implemented. I've said that all along. And it wasn't finished, and still isn't. It should not have been released until they had the storyline content available in the *base* game all the way to CL90.

You newbs to SWG crack me up.  Let me tell you a little story.

Many years ago, when I was back in school...I had saved up money and decided I needed my own car.  I searched around and finally found the car I wanted.  It was an older car.  A few friends had the same type of car.  They were always griping about this and that, but I just figured they were gripers.  I test drove the car and it was fine!  They were clearly full of it.  I drove it home and early on, things were great.  Weeks passed with none of the problems that my friends had with theirs showed up.  I began to feel they must be bad at taking care of their car...that I was better than them.  Time passed and I got to know my car better....it was no longer the perfect car I thought it was as I descovered that it always pulled to the right.  The back speakers crackled and the car would spin out on wet pavement.  They bugged me, but I could live with them.  I decided to put a little money each month into fixing the little things.  Then one day it happened.  The radiator busted.  $500 down the drain...no big deal...I can survive.  The car started dying on a whim...bad wiring to blame and no one could figure out where or how.  Finally, the actual aluminum engine block started to have issues and the only option was a new engine.  Suddenly, I realized why my friends told me not to waste my time with this car.    Did I have all the same problems that my friends did?  no.  Certainly some of the problems were the same.  It wasn't any one set problem though...the car was just not built well.  My friends got the last laugh as I, in the end, admitted they were right.

So..to you new guys..I saw, "enjoy the honeymoon!"  That's all it will be. image  Ironically, that's what we vets have been saying all along.

(Geez. This story SUCKS! There isn't even a love interest, or even a climax. Where was the tension between a protagonist and antagonist? Lame. You couldn't get this published even in a high school literary magazine.)

So..to you new guys..I saw, "enjoy the honeymoon!"  That's all it will be. image  Ironically, that's what we vets have been saying all along. (How'd you know I was still in the honeymoon stage? I just got married about 6 months ago! Who are you? Are you spying on me? And don't knock the honeymoon stage, its pretty sweet!)

Look. Honestly, I don't think the NGE is in anyway inferior to the original game. For me, the original game sucked. I mean...it was pathetic. It didn't hold my attention past about 2 months. It was in almost every aspect a complete failure as a Star Wars MMORPG for me. It looked nice, had some interesting terrain, and a cool community. Other than that, it was a failure in my eyes. The skill system, though interesting in concept, sucked in practice. I hated waiting around to train others. Combat was broken. Quests were non-existant. And most of what you spent your time doing in the game, was not even represented in the movies, like hunting. And where were the Stars and the Wars? Originally there was no space game, and the War was nowhere to be found. Don't get me wrong, I pasted my fair share of rebel scum, but that was just other players. The faction missions were a joke. I never had the impression that there was a WAR going on in the game. I could go on and on....

Now I'ill admit I had high expectations when I first played. And now that I have returned my expectations were basically that it would still suck. So the two experiences are not from the exact same point of view, and therefore colour the results.

That being said. The game is way more entertaining to me now. I am doing missions, involved with known characters. I feel more involved, I see the War around (though it still needs much more development). And so on...

All these bugs people talk about. Where? I have seen the collision detection thing. Heard of the rubberband thing, though never had it happen to me. Lag, not an issue for me. But I concede that other people might have these problems. Other than that, where? What? I haven't seen anything. But yet people describe this game as "filled with thousands of bugs". And each one of them "game breaking." Whatever.

I'll concede that  post CL30 the game is underdeveloped for the NGE. Yes that should have been addressed pre-release. Will they address this? I hope so, I don't know. If not, and I still like the game at that level, ill get that expansion and use that. No big deal.

The worst thing about all this was in the WAY SOE treated its standing playerbase and releasing this undertested and essentially without warning. That was horrible. No defense, SOE should be slammed and slammed hard for that. But, they probably won't.

So you are left with a choice. To try the new game, play it or leave it depending completely on your experience with this new game. OR decide SOE has betrayed you enough and move on to something else. Its a GAME. Play it if its fun. If its not, don't play it. I don't see why people aren't getting over this. I have been on the other side of the fence. I have seen games I loved MUTATE into something that for me was no longer fun. So I left...no whining...no complaining...just moved on. Why? ITS A GAME. NOT A SECOND LIFE.

Anyway...starting to go off topic here. I like the NGE so far, and it was cheap to get into this new version. I hope it continues to develop on this path and I can continue to enjoy it. IF not, well...there are new things coming out all the time.

So please don't try to belittle people with posts like yours and TRY to respect other people's opinions. Warn anyone you want, but don't attack others just because they don't share your opinions.

It should be noted that not all of the above rant is directed at the quoted poster, but also at a variety of posts recently found within this forum. If you don't like the NGE that is a fair opinion. But, some feel it is a step in the right direction, which is also a fair opinion. I believe it was Elnator that said the NGE has potential but isnt there yet, I believe he is correct. However, I find the game entertaining enough to play it now. Though this position could change at any time given further play and the timetable of improvements, if any, by SOE to the game.

Nice post doom, just wiping the blood out of my eyes from reading those red letters!

And I think the point is, this game WAS a second life for some people, instead of a game to have fun in. They developed friendships and communities, which is kind of wonderful, but what isn't wonderful is that when the game changes they feel this hatred. At the end of the day it IS just a game, love it, or leave it.

And would you care to elaborate where did I make the mistake?

I guess it's not necessary, Fadeus brought the point home pretty well.  This was yet another botched patch, but like little good boy you are, you went and kissed arse anyway.  Or is it another Wepps that every time a red names posts in the official forums, he's always in the first 5 posts to complemet on the post????

    .....

Its only now just a game.  It was far more than that for the last 2 years.  Face it.  You played back at launch for a few months.  That's nice, but it doesn't give you a leg to stand on when comparing this game as it used to be.  This game hasn't been like it used to be when you played since a couple weeks after you left.  The game was always evolving and getting better.  Then the CU hit and many left...amazingly, many returned.  Was it because the CU was good?  No, it was because the community they were apart of remained and they wanted to return to those they were friends with.  The game evolved from "just a game" into a community of players that had truely created their own universe as the devs claimed from the beginning.  When the NGE hit, the game changed in such a fashion that it could no longer support the communities that existed.  Crafters where shoved to the back.  Entertainers almost destroyed.  With the community in shambles, many left to continue the community elsewhere...and so they have created new communities or simply replanted old ones.  Will they return?  Most will not.  Because it is the community they played in that mattered.  That community no longer exists.  So, no..It was not just a game.  For me and the hundreds of others on my server, it was our galaxy.  Perhaps you will be able to form a new community.  Good for you.  I can only hope that one day you can understand that sometimes its not just a game.  I hope that when that day arrives, its not as SOE is destroying it once again.

First of all, I don't believe in praising someone for doing their job.  If you do, that's cool!  But I don't, and even less when the job is done mediocerly (sp?).  If you would've told me that this patch was the first patch that didn't break 10 other stuff, that would've been notable at best.  But just because that patch "broke less things than normal" does not make it praise worthy.  It's just plain A$$-kissing!

Another thing, having been banned doesn't make you a martyr.  Get over yourself!

We are encouraging them to do good things and right now the BEST (best means good in case your idiot button is still on) thing for SW FANS, SW, SOE and LA is to fire the whole group involved with SWG especially the management and that lying lil wimp Torres.

But when they do bad, they get hit.

Actually Wepps.  I just had an epiphany (sp?) and I think I understand what your motivations are...

The way I see it, you wouldn't praise an adult for drinking from a cup without spilling it, or coloring inside the lines or pissing and getting most of it on the toiletbowl...

But it that person was retarded.  Then the circumstances would be different won't they?!

Compared to what CCP, Blizzard and others have to offer, SOE is looking more and more each day like a retarded person.  And you feel compelled to give them high praises when they haven't screwed up too royally.

    Keep up the good work!

P.S. This post is meant to be sarcastic and a bit humorous.  I meant no offense towards mentally challenged people.  Although I feel that apologies might be in order for having compared them to SOE.

SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!

    Wepps.. Babe...

I have to say, you're feeding them with that positive reinforcement. It is like complimenting Jeffrey Dahmer on his tablemanners.

What they did was inexcusable. At this point, no matter HOW many patches come along, and how many bugs they fix (those are just NEW bugs, mind you... just the bugs to the NOOB areas. Noobies Uber Alles).. they don't make up for anything they did.

Did they make the game better for ONE person who enjoyed it before? HELL no. We lost everything. Gameplay, Classes, Weapons worth a damn (all do the same damage.. you'd know if you had a combat log), everything that made the game unique.

    What did we get? NOTHING.

Sure, the game is totally a better game at the noob end. That tutorial with Han Solo was impressive. Nice cohesive quests up the CL's...STILL doesn't mean they couldn't do that with the CU or pre-cu engine.

So what have we REALLY gained as Vets? NOTHING. They could have made ALL the new quests work in the old system. THAT isn't the nge. The nge is the lousy clicky-combat. It is the fact that there's only 9 classes, you can never change (unless you got that ADK-throw-a-bone).

And when you all boil it down.. to a Vet, you lost everything and GAINED NOTHING. You even lost the community.

So quite frankly.. If I lost everything, $OE should too.

Nor will constant whining about whining. What.. you think if you push your head up your ass far enough, you'll eventually hit grey matter?

If you do that usually you have crap spew out of your mouth as your head pushes the poop out.  At which point you will be recruited to work for SOE/LA as a "community Relations Manager" if you are really good at spouting crap you might get to be Julio Torres or John Smedley.

On your resume you dont put great at lying but A real "company" guy.  Will do literally "anything" in the name of the company.
