    Ultima Online.

The Realm and Meridian 59 have under 10,000.

    Edit: Not counting MUDs/graphical MUDs.

    There's lots still around...

    Meridian 59
    Ultima Online
    Asheron's Call
    Everquest
    Anarchy Online
    Darkage of Camelot
    Lineage
    etc....

There's a bunch of MUDS still active too. The list is accually quite large, and could take some time to complete, which I'm not up to doing right now hehe. ::::28::

The only serious contenders among OLDER MMORPG's are UO, EQ and AC1, all of which have over 40k users (EQ and UO both have over 100k last time I checked).

M59 and others have fewer than 10k subscribers.

NOTE: he said OLDEST THREE... not all the old ones.

UO, EQ and AC1 are the 3 oldest MMORPG's over 10k subs. Lineage I is also over 10k subs.... not sure if it's older than AC1 or not though...

Is it just me that wouldn't really count AC, EQ1 and DAoC old?

The only older *mmorpg* than them that is still in existance is M59... and it doesn't have more than 10k subs.

Personally I still play Multi Users in Middle Earth (MUME) a mud that started in 1991. THAT is what I consider OLD in online *Internet* gaming terms but it's a MUD, not an MMORPG. Even though it does have a couple thousand players.

Oh sorry I didn't notice that you stuck DAOC in there. If you noticed I said UO, EQ and AC1, not DAOC. DAOC is relatively young (only recently hitting it's 4th year).

The Realm is below 10k subscribers. The OP specifically asked which were the oldest existing MMORPG's with OVER 10k subscribers.

Munka said DAoC, not you, sorry for the confusing.

Well, I guess wat I said was directly off-topic, so shoot me, but you're right. The Realm doesn't have over 10,000 subscribers, which sucks, because it's still a good game, but now I'm going even more off-topic.

    To be on topic:

    Ultima Online
    Asheron's Call?
    EverQuest?

I think that's in the right order, care to confirm Elnator?

By the way, EQ and AC and UO -are- pretty old for whoever said they weren't. (next to Meridian) they were the first generation MMOs. They were the first that really caught attention. Then, DAoC was basically the only next gen MMO back then.

SWG was a step ahead of DAoC, followed by AC2 and the likes of EQ2 (graphics wise)

WoW, well... it could technically be called the current next-gen MMO because of its popularity and the fact that it brought more popularity to the MMO market than any game before it. Graphics-wise, it's not that pretty... it's just very well themed, and that goes far in the market.

These are when they were released FYI.

    UO - 30/09/1997
    EQ - 16/03/1999
    AC - 31/10/1999

Edit: Lineage was released in 1998, don't know when, pretty sure that's still doing well.

    Thank you.

Sheista: I said they were old because they are, if you compare them to Meridian 59 or The Realm.

    It's not very old though.

I'm not sure of the US release date, but it was after Meridian 59 and The Realm.

Ultima Online was released back in 1997 and has about 150,000 subscribers .

    http://www.uo.com

The Realm Online isnt popular, it has only 5,000 subscribers.

EverQuest is probably the most popular of the old games, but only veterans Lv40÷ playing, you wont find new people playing around.

Not entirely sure but I seem to remember playing AO when DAOC came out.

Could be wrong though, just have this faint memory of loosing some friends to this "new" PvP game.

Also, wasnt meridian dead for at least a couple of years, and were resurected by a new team?

Correct :) I didn't count Lineage 1 because it wasn't released in the states. But yes, if you count it it's UO, L1 and EQ. AC would be #4

    AO released during DAOC's beta
It suffered from an absolutely abominal memory leak that made it unplayable even on the best systems.

And, yes, M59 isn't the same game now that it was when it was originally out. New team and I Think they put it on a new engine too but not positive on that one.

Yep, there's a new program which vastly improves the graphics. They're currently running a free trial, check it out:

UO was not 3D (is it now?).  L1 was not in NA.

It make EQ the first 3D MMO, which is the first 2nd generation, MMO.  There are no 3rd generation out yet.  Graphics are nicers, but they are not worthy of a generation switch.

UO is a first generation MMO.  The first?  No idea, I am not THAT old!  image  But in the evolution chain, EQ is the first modern MMO, WoW, despite everything they claim, belong to the same generation as EQ...3D with nothing good enough to make it 3rd generation (neither is EQ2 a 3rd generation, maybe a 2.5  LOL).

DDO, Vanguard, AoC, Warhammer (and other to be released titles) MIGHT be 3rd generation MMOs, it remains to be seen and proven.

If the graphics under screenshot are representative of pre-1999 and you have a decent world size, than yes, Meridian would be older...but I have doubts about it, yet, I dunno.

Yet, it would remains a "side game" nonetheless, did it even reach 100k players? image  Especially that I NEVER see a Meridian box on the shelves, which kinda disqualify it right away!  image

    AO or DAOC?

Cause I remember AO launch and if DAOC was worse then that, well that just can not be. :)

I did play AO from beta 3, and then it worked smooth, but when they let in all them people, I think they had well over 50k preorders, then their system just could not handle it, at all.

There were some fierce memory leaks as well, Newland city in particular, not even sure they fixed that as of now, just that we do not see it with todays machines.

And they kept claiming, "no memory leaks in there", wich I doubt even one person believed..

Ah thoose were the days, i dropped it after 1 month and returened when they opened up RK2 a couple of months laters, been back and forth but still playing :)

    What?

    What is Meridian 59?
Meridian 59 is an online 3D graphical RPG. It was originally released in 1996 by the 3DO company and was one of the first commercial online games available for sale in retail stores in the US. The game was purchased by Near Death Studios, Inc. in 2001 and relaunched commercially.

    1996.

I highly doubt Lineage 1 actually had more -subscribers-. The reason being, they based their numbers off of characters, and with the amount of cyber cafes that sold game-time and such, that severely unbalances things. Just think of how many players have multiple characters.. and well, you'd have pretty insane numbers too. If WoW went by characters, they'd have upwards of 20 million+.

There was a thing a long timea go about it, but I can't be arsed to find the article.
