meh, this has been happening across all the realms.
My guess is that it is merely a troll/joke as the guilds that worked to get the sceptor are more interested in the epikz in AQ then a little gold from some foolish people.

I find it funny how the community spazzed out as if it was the end of the world. This is what I live for in MMORPGs, this is a real news story, so what if your clan/guild grinded enough to open the gates on another server thats pretty much a non-story, other servers do that all the time, but to have your guild/clan prevent content or a game to move on, that is the fun part I think. This is why I don't like a linear storyline, it would be nice to see a storyline divulge and go seperate ways.

I think it's great that at least someone in WoW has some depth. I mean, what do most ppl play MMOs for? They play them in hopes of effecting the game, not to just play it. This is what MMOs are created for. These ppl are actually having an impact on the game, rather than just playing it.
Terrorists have been discovered to be hiding out in the nation of Azeroth. We believe they may be constructing weapons of Mass Destruction. So we are sending in troops to overthrow the nation of Azeroth and bring freedom to the region. We will be seen as liberators by the people in the country and bring them things like a stable economy and democracy.

Ok, the one who wrote that article is making the mistake of its life. that guild should NOT get ANY attention. their whole goal was to get fame and idiots even give it to them on a plate. the whole community worked hard to get the gates open and then some idiots demand so much money just because they were lucky they received the ability to open it just so they can "OMGZ LOOKS MOMZ I R GOT WRITTEN ABOUTZ MY GUILDS FOR BEING ASSHOLELOLOL!!11" this whole situation shouldn't get any attention in the first place.

Whats wrong with attention? You act as if fame and attention in a MMORPG is a bad thing. Who cares, who worked hard. Imagine if you or your clan was the best team at an FPS, despite all the hard work other clans and people put in, all that matters is the number one spot to most people. People should play a game to win, to win being whatever goal you set for yourself. There is no end-game for MMORPG they constantly evolve and move on.
I like how nobody has explained in the couple of posts about this topic about why this is a bad thing or what it actually takes to get the gates open, they just whine about "omgzors these guys got this uber-leet thing that lets them do something nobody else can do unless they do a ton of work, or wait a while".
So lets say you are playing Diablo II, you got the barbarian tanking, sorc is spouting out spells like crazy, necromancer is goleming and cursing, amazon is pulling enemies, and your paladin is playing hammertime. Anyhow, the necro picks up meph's soulstone, and you go down to the hellforge, the necro decides to take the stone and run, all the way to diablo's lair, he releases diablo, and gives diablo meph's soulstone. now you have to face the necromancer, diablo, and meph has rerisen. I think it sucks to have the same story retold on each various server, the only difference really being the random loot that you may get, or the random players you play with. Its all essentially the same.
Anyone remember the EQ or UO guild that denied a whole server from advancing a certain quest by defending the entry point? Took GMs to get involved and they gave the defenders a special trophy to show for their work.
1. It was a joke that got a bit out of hand. It was started by one of the guild members on the forums. They're actually waiting for a good time for all of their guildmates to come online so they can finish the quest.
2. All gold that was donated to them will be refunded.
3. It's not terrorism because they're not instilling terror. They're simply refusing to open up a certain area for others to play. The most that can be called is being an ass, but since it's a joke, it doesn't matter anyway.
4. Other people can complete the quest too, it's just that they're the only guild to do so.
I recall something like this happening in Asheron's Call years back.
Some Guild setup round the clock protection on a crystal that had to be broken (or something to that effect) in order to advance the story line. The Crystal was broken on all servers except 1. Eventually a Dev/GM went in and did something about it... but it's a prime example in that Players, on any given day, can effect the rest of the gameworld.

Yes, the same thing happened in AC1 many years ago. Players blocked content from being released. The AC1 devs stepped in (in character form) and forced the content to be released. I imagine Blizzard will do the same if this goes on long enough.

Because there is a diffrence trough Fame won trough Charity or skill and this.
In a FPS its competition who is the best, its each clan for its own and the winner gets picked by skill.
in this WoW event, the entire server had to work together by giving in loads of items. they succeeded, and then some guild abuses the situation to make profit for something they didn't deserve.
Well if they didn't deserve the item, how did they get it then? I think its more of a problem with the implementation that Blizzard has done. This is fame won through notoriety, people don't like bad guys. For most MMORPGs out there I am guessing its very difficult to get an entire server to hate you, for this it seems a simple way to get an entire server to hate you. Sure it throw out the work of many people, but who cares in many games all the work you put in can just as easily be taken from you in many ways.
Then again I don't play WoW, I played the beta and couldn't get past the learning curve. It just reminded me of what would happen if you got all your input from a group of ravers. But I digress.
I think it would be funny, to see a bunch of players having to just got done grinding pelts or whatever they had to grind and thought "ah this is the end, soon the gates will open" to have to find that you have to donate 5k gold to this guild or they won't open it. So now you have to grind gold!
If you have something in game that is worth an amount of ingame coinage, why not try and see how much you can fetch for it?
Note to the above, yeah I guess it was Ashren's Call that the GM/Devs helped spring that one content open, I couldn't remember which one it was. Wish more things like that happened though.

Meh...
I don't want this guy on my server! He remember me of the LoSers on Luclin, damn...someone shot him!
Although I would admit that, against anything rational, I actually enjoy hunting your type down, when I am successfull that is. But I rather focus on my nice aspects than let's my evil aspect grow out of control to the point I just want to crush you. I remember making such a guild wipe 3 times and lose an evening...they trust me as their main chanter and I was just enjoying to see them lose their time. I also remember the joy peoples have on the server the day another guild outdo them.
It was quite funny to see them perplexed...the server think I am a pretty good chanter if not the best (I was not the best, merely a very good 2nd chanter for any guild), but for some odd reason, those guys think I lack...but they still accept to group me and wipe more! Causing those guys to fail is a reward in itself.

hahaha This is funny as hell. I dont think it really reflects on the comunity I just think its funny. I wish more games had crazy stuff like this, it makes it a little more interesting. If WoW doesn't want to make more world wide events the players will do it =P
I checked forums for the hell of it.TUrns out that the guild had said it was a joke. Most of the server is bitching about it saying "Oh you guys are so gay we know it wasn't a joke."
Why does everyone have dicks up their asses? "OMG NO INSTANT ACCESS BECAUSE A GUILD LIKES TO MAKE A GAME INTERESTING?"
