[Quick note to the moderators here, "ass" is in the Bible numerous times. In fact there's a super famous Bible story about a talking Ass. God and his angel punished some guy for not listening to a talking ass. No joke! It's true! So just letting you know I'm using the word in the Holy Bible context. ]
Now to the subject of this here thread. I recently got a big fat bonus paycheck from my current job. I decided to check out WoW (among my numerous purchases heheh.) I purchased it at a local GameStop store. The sales clerks were very, very, knowlegeable. Here are some things about WoW that ALL mmorpg makers NEED to learn!
Gamestop is okay, though it really depends on the individual stores. The local EB, believe it or not, has much better sales clerks than at the local Gamestop (for now at least). But that's irrelevant to the rest of this, so on we go.
1. WoW aka Blizzard made their mmorpg 100% MAC useable! I recently got a MAC. The darn thing blows a way a PC like a 2006 Fararri vs a 1908 Ford Model T!!! THINK about it - major fortune 100 companies demand their workers use Apples. Major movie houses, and production companies will ONLY use Apples. Heck - get this!!!.... major computer gaming companies use Apple computers to MAKE software for PCs!! Apples are insanely reliable, versatile, and after Linex, the Apple OS is unbeatable. (It's called the Tiger OS.) There is a very, very, sizeable cult following for Apple computers. Plus as a gaming computer, Apples destroy PC in terms of quality, reliability, function, and outstanding performance.
Apple users are extreemly keen on discovering programs aimed at the Apple market. Kudos to Blizzard for this marketing coup!
Yeah, great, another Apple fanboy. Yada, yada, yada. I hear it all the time now.
Here's a pop-quiz for you, though: how much impact does a player's computer have if the servers don't work? I'm betting God Herself could design a computer that would still can't make WOW run any better than it runs for everyone else: long queues, severe lag, somewhat frequent disconnects.
2. What is the BEST form of advertising? *HINT* it's 100% FREEE!! I call it WOMA. "Word of Mouth Advertising". If your best friend tells you to check out something, you WILL check it out. Vs what some TV, magazine, etc... ad says... no matter how slick it is. Blizzard includes with EVERY copy of WoW the CD game code for the game itself, as well as a code to get a friend to play for free - without downloading anything! Without having to buy anything! Not only can every single WoW player get their friends to play for free, they can get their friends to play I-N-S-T-A-N-T-L-Y!!! Kudos to Blizzard for this marketing coup! I'm studying business, and was completly blown away by such simple, but ultra-effective marketing!!!
Uh... you know EQ2 is free to Fileplanet folks, right? And that most every MMO offers a free pass for others to play the game, too? You surely knew this, being so experienced in MMOs as you seem to be. Right?
3. WoW is an ultra-modern 4th generation mmorpg (same generation as SWG, EQ2, Lin2, etc...) but on purpose streamlined itself, but not to the point of stripping itself.
I can't recall exactly, but, uh, I think this is just 2nd generation, because they are talking of upcoming releases as 3rd generation. But... I may have misread this somewhere online.
How can I explain this? Best example is for you to rent/buy a copy of the DVD "Animatrix" and watch the interviews section about the history of Anime. Todd McFarlane goes into detail about how Asian animators used techniques to streamline their animation, while at the same time never going to the point of stripping them. He gives as one of many examples a dissection of the Superman animated shows vs the Asian animated shows showing flying characters. And for any of you who does not know who Todd McFarlaine is, he is currently the world's most successful comic book, and animation, artist. More so than even Frank Miller. In terms of money, more than even Stan Lee, the creators of Superman, and every single other artist. (this is in terms of money.) But back to subject..... WoW is a streamlined modern mmorpg, that is streamlined in the RIGHT places!!!
First off, almost everyone I know hates McFarlaine. Okay, he makes big money. Britney Spears makes/made a lot more money than most other artists. Guess that makes her a great musician, huh?
Second off, you are talking about art. That is a subjective issue. In other words, you may like Monet, and I may like Picaso. That doesn't mean you or I are "better" than one another. Just different.
I know there's this obsession to justify one's gaming habits as "better" than others, but seriously, you are really grasping for that justification here.
This coup by Blizzard means it can run EASIER on ultra expensive computers, as well as on older computers = even more paying subscribers! Unlike SWG and EQ2 which force players to buy brand new 1,000.oo to 2,000.oo computer systems.
I run EQ2 on the EXACT SAME COMPUTER I ran WOW on. Runs about the same as anyone else runs EQ2, too.
So, here, you actually don't know what you are talking about. Try again.
In ADDITION, WoW takes up a bit less memory, even after having 1 year of patches.
Hasn't EQ2 had, what, 20-something updates/patches? Two major content additions? And two expansions? Yeah, it probably does use more.
SWG went from needing roughly 1 gig, to now needing 2 gigs (almost close to 3 gigs) memory.
So what? You never mentioned what WOW needed to date. If memory serves, it was almost the same amount of memory.
Since ALL mmorpgs get their graphics outdated, it makes no sense to push the envelope with graphics. They're going to get outdated no matter what! WoW's graphics are modern enough to be more than immersive, but do not push the envelope.
Uh... WOW graphics are as unrealistic as it gets. It's more "animated" than "realistic". EQ2, for example, has shimmering, rippling water effects that simply don't exist in WOW.
You keep picking nits, but you haven't really said much that either wasn't entirely true, or wasn't more than personal opinion. That's not a great way to debate the merits of a game, you know.
I have to make special mention of the MOVEMENT. It is sooo lifelike it is almost flawless!!!
Until the lag hits. Oops.
4. The game really IS immersive! Every new character starts out with a copy of the gameworld map. Just looking over it gives one an incredible feeling of how freeekin' HUGE the gameworld is! WOW!!! (Pun intended lol!). Other things that help with the immersive feeling is the on point music, and much, much, much, more!
(sigh) EQ2 gets a world map at start, too. Most games do, now. Just like most offer that nice music (CoX offers rather nice tracks, I think, though others may not like them).
How much more? You don't list it, yet you go into extended detail on other things. What, you mean dancing? Oh, that's nice. It'd be nicer if the game was more stable (such as AQ event not crashing every single server that accesses it eventually), but I guess dancing is nice when you are waiting for the zepplin.
5. New players are very strong! Forget about starting out in EQ in which you kill one NPC then have to rest for 30 mins to 1 hour!!!
Uh, I never had that problem. If you can link to complaints about this from others, your argument will have much more weight.
In WoW you can kill low level NPCs non-stop. (1 at a time works best. Don't get swarmed of course!) I exploded in levels sooo quick, it felt like I was accidently leveling up! It took me roughly 15-25 NPC kills to move up each level. And I was casually killing NPCs while exploring, and learning how to use the game.
Same with EQ2. Made level 8 in a few hours, level 12 a while after that.
6. MOVEMENT! The movement is sooo easy! Easy to do, easy to learn! Classic SWG still has/had the best ever movement (you could do barrel rolls, and all sorts of other crazy movements during battle!).
Uh... you just move forward, backward, strafe left, strafe right, turn left, turn right. In WOW, that's it.
Why is this so mind-blowing to you? Name a game that doesn't have at least those basic movement options.
7. My current favorite - I can fight barehanded, or hold a shield in one hand, and fight "Captain America" style! And it is EFFECTIVE! Meaning I can kill if I choose to fight this style. One can level up and gain skills and become even BETTER using this specific fighting style!
Oh, God, you are funny. I'm actually thinking this whole thing was a joke. Except it sounds so doggedly earnest.
Kudos to Blizzard for making an effort to make their game DIFFERENT from the glut of other mmorpgs out there! Reminds me of one of my Barbarian characters in Diablo 2 - He used 2 knives at the same time heheh. I had another one who used 2 axes at the same time. It's just FUN to be able to do something DIFFERENT! Like how in Anarchy Online you can duel wield TWO GUNS at the same time LOL!
Uh... didn't you just say WOW was different? Then say AO allows similar choices?
Man, your logic is... yeah.
In WoW I can fight bare handed (there's even a bare handed skill!) or fight with a shield in one hand, and the other hand bare!
I do believe most games now permit that option. Even in CoX, everyone gets the Brawl action, which is just punching folks.
You sure are a funny, funny dude. I'm not sure whether you're joking, a shill, or just totally and completely ignorant of MMOs in general. I guess I would care if your opinion wasn't that of someone with zero real experience with WOW.
Come back in a few months, especially a month after hitting 60. Let us know if you're still so amazed with it all.
- Humanoid MOBs who will RUN AWAY when their health starts getting too low. Also they will team up on you using strategy - 1 will pull out a bow and do range attacks, while his partner will charge you and do melee. You then have to decide what stratagies to do!
- You can attack while running away. ONE other mmorpg in history has had this - Classic SWG (you could shoot over your shoulder while running away!).
- Now here's something intresting - MOBs that CAN'T be "conned" meaning you can't tell what level they are. Nothing! The only info you see is "??" and that's it! Player beware! LOL! Kind of makes sense, I mean when you walk up to someone, you can't tell how good or bad they are until they hit you with their first punch, or take out whatever weapon they use.

I agree the first one is in many other mmorpgs. But can you please tell me what other mmorpgs have the 2nd, and 3rd items?

For #2. EVE, Auto Assault, and I think Guild Wars and EQ2 as well. And for #3. SWG before the CU. A red con was a red con. If you were a novice marksman and nothing else, a cupa would con red to you, so would a NS Elder.
So like I said, nothing new or revolutionary.

The "2nd item": It took a bit of skill. But me and my brother use to hop around like rabbits while casting spells and shooting arrows in AC1. Of course that wasn't intended in the game...But it was bloody good fun and with enough skill was easily done. Now maybe it wasn't as brainless as being able to do it in WoW...But it was still there. And a bit more fun.
The "3rd item". What's so revolutionary about a monster being such a high level it could kick your ass in one hit?
I remember those ?? monsters. It meant stay the hell away. And it sure didn't mean run into a swarm of 20 of them. Which I erm...did once.
An anonymity of a monsters power is nothing new. Again, refer back to AC1.
I mean c'mon man. I rarely call someone a fanboi. But your ill-placed exuberance over minute details that are in fact not new. And the things you mention aren't even revolutionary. It's the same rehashed crap.
Get to lvl 50, not even 60, just 50. Then come back here and comment.
I'll bet my dusty box of WoW you'll think it sucks just as much as the next sap that got suckered into that crap.

For #2. EVE, Auto Assault, and I think Guild Wars and EQ2 as well.
Auto Assault has not released yet. Attack while in full retreat in EvE? I'm not sure, but maybe. (I'm trying to remember from when I played EvE.) For the last two you list, you say you "think" aka you are not sure. There are roughly 30 mmorpgs out, it is still an ultra-rare enough feature to make it intresting when one can attack while at the same time run away. 3 out of 20+ = still extreemly intresting aka rare.
And for #3. SWG before the CU. A red con was a red con. If you were a novice marksman and nothing else, a cupa would con red to you, so would a NS Elder.
So like I said, nothing new or revolutionary.
Classic SWG no longer exists. Next, even that example you lists does not compare to how WoW has it. When you see a red con in SWG, it means you will automatically DIE. It means that MOB is far stronger than you. In WoW there is NO con. Nothing. Just question marks where the con info normally appears. It means.... player beware! Maybe it is an easy mark, maybe its a hard mark, mabye its an... impossible aka certain death mark.
The first MOB I encountered in WoW that showed no con, was in some woods, after I crossed a river. Tney killed me in 4 hits, and they moved very quick. While I was a ghost, I went up to them, and watched them, while reviewing the battle in my mind. My armor was above avarage, So I wasn't lacking in that area. But my weapon was solid avarage.... vs them it had too slow attack speed, and did not do enough damage. I just need to buy/loot a better weapon for my current level. (I do agree in WoW the best items are loot. It's a matter of finding the right MOBs, and then hoping they randomly drop the loot you want/need.)

Picking apart my small list of MMO's will prove nothing. The stuff youve listed that WoW has is NOT NEW, end of story. Yea Pre-cu SWG dosent exist anymore, but it had been done before none the less, therfore its NOT NEW. And the ? as a level thing in wow usually means the mob is a much higher level than you, usually resulting in death. Generally the same as the red con in SWG, eventhough anybody could basically solo anything, its the concept behind it we are after. I fail to see how that in WoW is new to the mmo world, its basically the same thing, and to be honest its pointless so.....if you want to take this further then go ahead you win the argument and the internet, but ill know ive proven you wrong.

wow is the most brainless game out there everything is a a grind. Then you hit 60 which i did grind for gear and honor and then... thats it. There is nothing more to the game Blizzard Adds more end game material which is just farming for items(Yawn) nothing to actually do or accomplish in this game, you can't raid Ironforge or Org to do something cool, the server just crashes "Yea for wow and there amazing servers"

NICE one Hunt'n !!! I have a feeling he will never answer your question....
Ya know its funny but im not playing an mmo right now.
I dont miss it 1 bit either.
Right now im playing Sid Meier's Pirates!!
Go figure a game that is dated to 17 years ago is more fun for me than ANY current mmo.(shakes head wondering what is wrong with the mmo genre/industry.)
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

Ya... thats really a hard question to answer. For me, basically every MMO ive played is better than WoW. I hate level grinders. UO is (was) still THE best MMO for me, due to its open ended gameplay and it doesnt hold your hand in any way or form. I liked Guildwars more than WoW because the PVP is WAY better and the PVE story missions are a lot more fun than any quest in WoW. EVE is better than WoW because again its an open ended game, possibly the most open ended MMO on the market and its open PVP (aside from safe systems) with a big risk vs reward factor makes it alot more exciting (although travel times and the skill system can make the game far less engaging than it could have been).
Theres three. Those are my opinions, which is exactly what Hunt'n wanted (yes he asked another poster but I wanted to voice my opinion).

As I've retired from WoW, I'm completely open to suggestions of a better MMORPG experience. Is'nt UO kind of ancient? I've played Guidwars and never made it to the PvP, mostly just the quests which were all in instanced space which I did not care for. Prior to WoW, I played 18 months of Planetside which is nothing but pvp, and it was great, but what attracted me to WoW, my first fantasy mmorpg was questing and exploration. So for me PvP is not a huge draw. BTW I was frustrated with WoW's battlegrounds. I play UT quite a bit with thousands of maps. WoW had just 3 Battle ground maps, hard to believe. I've heard good things about Eve but I don't know if I want to spend my time exploring space. Can you get out and explore any of those planets? Ah well, the search continues!

Not arguing with you but I'd like to hear which is your preferred MMORPG and why is it better than WoW?

NICE one Hunt'n !!!
I have a feeling he will never answer your question....
Ya know its funny but im not playing an mmo right now.
I dont miss it 1 bit either.
Right now im playing Sid Meier's Pirates!!
Go figure a game that is dated to 17 years ago is more fun for me than ANY current mmo.(shakes head wondering what is wrong with the mmo genre/industry.)
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)

Ya... thats really a hard question to answer.
