Well of course they're not going to comment just as LA and SOE won't comment as well partially due to any legal reasons and more so to help fuel any hype this might give to any of the companies around it.

Well at least it looks like those BioWare fellas are having fun with this over there. Keep in mind they are in QA (no offense to QA peeps, I did a stint in QA as well) and they probably don't know much more than us.
"You assume that the game engine and software belong to SOE because they wrote it ? I would disagree there.
As a college professor, if I invent something using federal grant money the windfall belongs to the college. It doesnt matter if I wrote the proposal, came up with idea, proved the hypothesis, etc in the end that work belongs to the school.
I could write further analogies, but you get the idea."
When you accept federal grant money are you somehow missing the point that someone else is funding your work? In a way you are being hired with that federal grant to do work. In the case of paying to aquire a license to create your own work inside that IP its not the same case. YOU are assuming the cost or co development of the project... parts of which you OWN unless you sign a deal to the contrary.
You can write all the analogies you want...
Unless SOE agreed that LAE owned all property including code that SOE wrote or LAE funded the entire project... Every analogy or point you could make would still be false.
Just the same as amazingly enough Luscas doesn't own all those EU books that other people wrote but had to get a license to write.
So you have two options..
SOE got a break on the license fee by giving LAE the ownership regardless of who created what.
Or..
SOE owns the code they created... since there is no federal grant to SOE to develop SWG (an analogy)...
If you want to make an analogy please at least research license agreements to IP's and see how they work. Then make an analogy that would at least apply.
One of us would have to at least be able to find an example where a 3rd party was granted a right to create a computer game or specificly an MMO based on an IP and then had to hand all their work back to the license grantor.
Which would still specificly come down to any deals made before the license was granted.
I'm pretty sure that its told up front and papers signed with the federal grant thing as well.

I agree with you, good points. However, I my info says otherwise. I wont continue to speculate on the how's and why's because I just dont know. I only know what was said and that was this...
Bioware with some recent hires like Vogel (from SOE) are at this very moment working with SOE on a transfer of SWG. In addition, Bioware is in the process of interviewing hundreds (if not thousands) of applicants in Austin to add to their team.
Now for my THIRD attempt to post this... There was a thread that was basically some dude wanting Bethesda to take over SWG. The title read like another rumor: SOE/LEC to hand SWG production rights over to Bethesda Softworks. (Morrowind Devs) That thread lasted over an hour and a half, but any Bioware thread can barely last 15 mins. I'm not saying that it's irrefutable proof, just something interesting.

If all parties agree to a revision, it doesn't matter how restrictive the first agreement was. My theory is that it's now more in SOEs best interest to liscence the technology to BioWare/LA than to run the game themselves. Money talks. $OE listens.
Originally posted by free2play NWN is the only thing I know Bioware for and it was unlimited in Expack potential. It was also, if not a failure in the online version, It was clumbsy. So as much as Bioware make good games, I don't know if they have the skills to me MMO's.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel ring a bell?

See that's the thing it IS possible but nobody knows until there is official confirmation from someone.. and not supposed sources or various other rumors. Nobody really believed the NGE leak poster but obviously.... Anyway I just don't like the rumor posted as facts thing.
Would I like BioWare? Most likely as they have other good games. SWG or a game like it couldn't get much worse than the current game. Regardless of who is at fault.
There is no reason that BioWare couldn't be having these things transitioned to them IF it is true.
It would have to have been part of some agreement, buyout or something else but something all parties agreed to.
It just still seems that IF this is going on... and I was SOE...
I'd be offering former and current SWG subscribers some free time in another SOE game. To retain as much subscription as I could.
Even if their part of the game was bought out... Not trying to retain some of the subscribers in other SOE IP's that have a ton of expansions to get them to buy... wouldn't seem very SOE'ish.
Anyway I guess we'll all know one way or the other soon (tm)

Honestly, if I can get a game close to what it was before, I'd be more than happy to rebuild my toons from scratch...
At first, my friends and I wanted to come back with everything intact, but we're to the point now where we don't care...We won't come back in it's current form, but we'll be back in an instant if we get something close to what we had, and we're willing to start over to get it...
The ownership of the code question cannot be answered here. We don't know how the contract was negotiated. It could have gone either way depending on how it was written.
But devil's advocate here.. let's say $OE owns the code. Keep in mind, $OE also probably owes LA some money for the licensing agreement. So what if LA said to $OE that they'd forget about the last payment to them for SWG if they sell the code to LA? Or even throw them a couple scheckles to $OE to sell the code?
Then $OE's press release could say "We sold SWG to LA as a good business decision. We'll be helping with the transition out of the kindness of our hearts"
Corporate decisions are all about Money first.. THEN good spin comes in a close second.
Either way.. we won't know until something "official" comes out. I'm sure at the time it will be put fourth witht the best face possible where everyone hugs and sings kyumbyah.

and you have to remember it doesn't take THAT long to full template a toon, with the exception of BH pre-mount/vehicle. I think starting over would be more beneficial then transfering toons and it would mess with the economy of servers and might intimidate new players. Plus being a n00b is fun!!

I agree....If you have your friends with you, and you're out hunting, goofing off and having a good time, it takes no time to gain skills...
I would love to go back into the game and do the things over with my friends...It was fun the first time, and it'll be fun the second time...

BioWare will do a wonderful job on this game, and there seems to be a growing amount of suggestion that BioWare Pandemic are taking this over, there is talk that there will be an annoucement next Month in April by BioWare about there new MMO.
Whannnnn Whannnnn dat is the sound of 20 year old babies
Sounds like there will be a brand new Star Wars MMO.
Original SWG will probably limp along then until someone pulls the plug; or will they pass the baton to Bioware and let them enhance the player experience of the existing subscribers???
I doubt if SWG can be "re-made", I mean, it would be nice and all if people could get an equivalent level character and stuff, but I don't see it happening.
My guess is that SOE (being who they are) won't release their game, subscriber base or their code to Bioware and everyone will just have to quit SWG and join the new one.
But in the long run their might be a very nice MMO for Star Wars fans eventually, if they can take their KOTOR techology into an MMO.

One question though. If they lost the license, how could they have even a minimal support staff working on it? Wouldnt they have to either shut down or turn it over to someone else?
