You cannot do it all you have to be in the right place at the right time with the right piece of equipment. This is called strategy and tactics. The fact you have to do this I think adds an undesireable mental element to a genre that otherwise specializes in more instinct and reflex then thought. He wants one shot kills with whatever on whatever ie. an easy button or an I win button You mean like the Orbital Strike only paying subscribers have access to. Best to just let them go those are the types that send you a tell after you kill them whining about how much you cheat etc.

Ahhh that would explain the bolt from the heavens that struck me dead this weekend. I was sitting atop a mountain in front of one of our bases under attack. That was a flail, its artillery. The fodderside guys can cert that.
The Orbital Strike is something CR4 and CR5's get that anhilates everything in a large radius when they push a button, on a 20 minute to 3 hour timer. Its like the totally unballanced Jedi class that anhilated Star Wars Galaxies.

an Orbital Strike is a vertical beam. cooks anything within about a thirty metre radius, but it has a ten second timer from firing to detonation, and an animation which lasts four or five seconds bulding up to impact which anyone can see and, if you're quick, avoid. you need CR5 to get one, and it has a long timer on use - three hours i think. someone's unlikely to waste one on a lone AA MAX, but you'll probably have seen one in the distance - they're best used for killing AMS or clearing camped doors. CR4s also have a baby version but it only has half the radius - not hard to outrun. with that timer, and the delayed effect, AND the fact that you have to aim it using a continent map fixed at about 10x zoom it's far less uber than Nerf09 would have you believe.
In all they account for a miniscule proportion of the overall kills and deaths, but you might find yourself dying to them quite often if, say, you frequently stood outside external doorways spamming plasma grenades, or walked three feet outside an AMS bubble and sat down to snipe, or stood around like a lemming at a packed vehicle terminal rather than sheltering in a stairwell (in most bases, you can stand inside the bottom of one of the external Wall Stairwells without being removed from the vehicle queue)... or stood still for more than a minuite in a BFR.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.

There's a ten second buildup and a three hour cooldown and must be aimed by map, with extremely limited zoom. i'd hardly call it equivalent to Jedi. you'd have more of an argument bitching about BFRs - they have a far greater up-front punch, better defence and, like the Jedi, have spawned a whole group of people dedecated to taking them down, as often and as humiliatingly as possible.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.
In fact, in terms of destructive potential the Flail is actually vastly superior. area of effect is only marginally smaller than the CR4 OS (or at least it feels like it... grrr...), refire rate is a hell of a lot faster, accuracy is far better if you have a spotter (which you pretty much need to drop a decent OS anyway), the target gets considerably less warning and the range is massive - more than half a continent length - compared to the OS which has to be launched from within about half a base-SOI-length of the target.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.
Actually, that sounds like a Flail, a one-cert Cave artillery piece you need a Vehcle Module for. big whitish-blue comet thing that arcs out of nowhere, right?
Yeah that describes what I saw. It must have been a flail like you guys said.

That does sound rather unbalancing.
Indubidoubly. You will find those defend the Orbital Strike with the same ferocity as those who defended the Jedi class in SWG. They make more excuses then there are words in a dictionary.

Not to derail the entire thread or forum hehe. I think the problem with the Jedi class in SWG was how you utilized it in relation to your fellow players. Your right as far as some people should just not have that level of power they will inevitably abuse it. However there were those of us in the Jedi order that were there for the PVE fun factor with friends(some of the funnest times I ever had was tanking for my rl rifleman wife); however if a bounty hunter did show up they stood little chance(my alt was a BH so I played both ends), but it was their choice to be there I did not force them to attack me so I never felt bad about that part. Personally there were those of us that really wanted our SWG experience to include being a jedi (its just another sci-fi game without the glowsticks). I think the best way to have solved the problem of having an overpower class in a MMO would have been to limit us to only PVP vs other Jedi and those BH's that attacked us. Then we could have had our cake and eat it too as far as balancing the whole thing went. SOE gave up on trying to do their jobs by reverting the game back to beta with the introduction of the NGE. They took the easy way out, and we all know that the easy path leads to the darkside.

Endgame content in a FPS is suppose to be using new inventive and ever more complex tactics/strategy. But due to the roleplaying grind effect (Players constantly grinding for CE to get the uber finger o god button, or grinding for battle rank), and overpowering unballanced weapons (like the uber finger o god button) there is no endgame content. The command ranks are full of multiple accounters hogging up the squads (grinding to get their uber finger o god button), and the squad members are leeching off squadmembers and squadleader. Nobody talks to eachother, much less cooperate, squads serve no purpose other then consensual leeching. Its about as fun as killing 100,000 rabbits for Jedi experience, and uses basically the same amount of brainpower.
The developers of games just dont realize how much of a magnet alpha class characters are, and the devs are incompetant and completely lack imagination when it comes to trying to keep the game from becoming a 1-dimensional grindomatic to get your uber alpha class.
And amazingly as it sounds, the exact same problems JEDI created for a MMORPG, ubertoys (Orbital Strike and BFR's) in MMOFPS games have the exact same effect. Do you think developers would learn the lessons of alpha classes? NOOOOOO! How did SOE fix their alpha JEDI class? THEY COMPLETELY RUINED THE ENTIRE GAME! I rest my case.
Originally posted by Nerf09 classes? NOOOOOO! How did SOE fix their alpha JEDI class? THEY COMPLETELY RUINED THE ENTIRE GAME! I rest my case.
Swg - Jedi= Rest of Sci-fi stuff whats the point?
Like I said previously there were ways Jedi could have been implemented to give you that feeling of power in PVE without messing up PVP. In the end the people that abused the power of Jedi in Pvp ruined it for the rest of us. SOE seems to go about solving their problems by trying to figure out which way would piss the most people off and implement it. I do not disagree with you that most MMO's should not have an alpha class. I just think if SOE had a clue they could have kept Jedi PVE power up while basically removing them from the PVP game (except versus other Jedi or BH's if that is how they really wanted to spend their day) to make that viable for everyone else. Thus you would have gotten the "Star Warsy" feeling without compromising the game. By definition a Jedi should have been able to solo content that other classes (much easier to master classes) could not handle.
As far as planetside goes considering how much this game relies on a combination of reflexes, strategy, and tactics a I win button sucks.
the best OS i have ever seen killed fourteen people. fourteen. every three hours. compare to a friend of mine who got 137 kills (and zero deaths, which is how i have such an exact figure. he posted the damn screenie everywhere...) in an hour and a half gunning for a Magrider. I could explain yet again how the OS ISN'T an 'i win' button (ten second timer. do you know how LONG ten seconds is in an FPS?), but i'd be repeating myself. allow those stats to speak for themselves: slightly less than five kills per hour, compared to well over eighty.
Squads: well OF COURSE squads are only mutual XP-leeching, if your engagement with the game begins and ends with the 'Find Squad' tab! Would you join a random group in Everquest, WoW, etc. and expect scintilating conversation, breathtaking teamwork, hillarious hi-jinks? no, you expect to find a bunch of self-serving pillocks who will ignore you until they have a use for you, expect you to do their work for them and bitch at you when you fail to. As in practically every other MMO out there, things get interesting when you join a Guild.
Get yourself in an outfit - not neccessarily the first one you find, shop around a little, listen to the Broadcasts in sanctuary and captured bases - if any catch your eye, ask to squad with them, and get on their voice comms for the night. when you've found a group you like, join up.
The Devs keeping the best toys for the paying customers? oh my god! the OUTRAGE! damn those bastards for wanting people to pay!
Neither Biffers nor OS make the game unplayable for people who don't have them, as the 70-ish% of paying players who have neither will attest.

I think you will find that PS is the best MMO currently out.
I just dont understand what anyone can think is possibly wrong with the game.
Is there anything else out there that enables you to have 399 players all on one map all fighting? No.
Is there anything out there that allows for team playing on the scale of PS? No.
I have played this game for 3 years now (i was in beta) and the only game that will come close to this might be Huxley. However Huxley caps servers at 120 players. So its not even close to PS numbers.
Whoever said this was a crap game needs to retry the game properly.

Planetside offers a unique game in the sci-fi genre a blend of mmo and FPS; however there is another game out there that has the same style its called World War II Online. Players fight over a half scale model of Western Europe as either Axis or Allies(English/French). I think the two games off set each other rather well since they are very different in their time period and weapons used.
If your interested on a different twist of the FPSMMO style check it out they just started a persistant free 14 day trial about 2 weeks ago.
Some people just do nothing else but troll/bitch/whine. I would respect someone's opinion if that person tried PS for several days, layed out some facts and told us all why he/she likes/dislikes those facts.
But the OP here came in, posted some BS "facts" and now expects everyone to suddenly respect his opinion? Paper/rock/scissor? WTF? PS is nothing like paper/rock/scissor. If it were, then if i would aim in general direction of the enemy, fire, then expect to get kills. No such luck. I have to actualy aim at the enemy to kill. I cant aim SOMEWHERE near the enemy and make a hit. Plus, there is no critical dmg, there is no half damage. You hit enemy becuase of your skill and you damage them to the full potential of your weapon. There is no "saving roll" or "resistance roll". You aim (your skill), you fire (your skill) you damage. Period.
The only difference between fodder players is that they cannot reach over BR6, cant drive mechs and cant get over cr3 (no OS). To this I say the following.
I have played on the free program for several weeks, and the only time it was frustrating, because I didnt have arsenal to fit into all situations. What does it mean? Well, even if u r TOP BR ( i believe its 24 atm) you still cannot have ALL weapons and ALL vehicles. That means if you are a vehicle type of player, you will have your weapons arsenal limited. Therefore you will have a wide range of vehicles to choose from to battle outside the base, but not so wide range of choices to pick weapons to battle inside the base.
They cant ride BFRs, but they CAN gun it. But, BFRs were nerfed to the point that their greatest enemy is infantry. Just yesterday 5 NC BFRs were trying to siege our base, and 3-4 troops with decis chased them away so fast they were trying to rush back through a narrow bridge and one of them fell off the bridge. Every moment in PS is situational. You use thise set of weapons to coutner that set of weapons. Thats perfect balance. Not a single weapon is overpowered to the point that no other weapon cannot outdamage it. Infantry is good vs inf and BFRs, BFRs are good vs vehicles/air, vehicles are good vs infantry, air is good vs vehicels/air. Its all about tactics and strategy. If you are good, you will save your base on a number of occasions, but it doesnt matter how good u r, if you are outnumbered 5 to 1, you WILL die and lose your base. Thats balance.
And about CR5. The OS has a 3 hour timer, and at MOST it can destroy enemy AMS or a group of enemy vehicles if their drivers are AFK or elsewhere. Its not a "I-win" button, its not a nuclear explosion. Its just a means to gain tactical advantage or to rob it of your enemies.
As I stated above, PS is MMOFPS with a HUGE incline into team work and strategy/tactics. Ive seen people being outnumbered 2 to 1 and hold the base succesfully while their cloaked mates hacked enemy base behind the front lines. Just yesterday I was playing a TR, and there was a 3-way on Cyssor - our leaders managed to coordinate our effords very well to a point where NCs were left with one base aand both TR and VS were attacking it... but SOMEHOW, NCs managed to backhack us and gained a foothold in our back... That was the end for TR because suddenly, we faced VS from the front, and NCs from the back. That fantastic move by NCs (they were outnumbered becuase 2 armies were fighting them) ensured their victory and made us TR standing with open mouths asking "how?what?WTF!!!??"
So no, this game is not scissor/rock/paper, this game is not unbalanced, this game is not unfair to the fodder players. If you die in 1 second, you either lie (I think u do, OP) or you suck to the point u need to stop playing all computer games.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Doesnt matter if it takes you 1,000,000 giant rabbit corpses to get a Jedi Character, half the players eventually grinded to get one and the galaxy gets overwealmed with Jedi's running to and fro whipping out their lightsabers at even the most minor infraction.
Doesnt matter if the OS has a 3 hour timer, one goes off every 60 seconds.
The OS cheapens Planetside, the OS narrows all tactics and strategy down into two things, GRIND and ZERG! The I-win-button fans will defend their crutch to their very last dying breath, making excuses left and right, stomping their feet, flaming, whining and crying. Its humorous to watch, especially when they cant go cry to mommy-moderator when they lose every point in an arguement.

Still screaming, i see. It would appear you exhausted all your logic some time ago...
i'm conscious that every post here is bumping a thread titled "worst game ever", a sentiment with which i heartily disagree, so i'll make my case and then hopefully this thread will die off.
Nerf, At no point have a tried to persuade you personally. I don't think you want to be persuaded, and to be frank, i don't particularly want you in my game. I'm here to encourage people who haven't played PS, or who have only just started, (or those who quit and are considering trying out the free game for that matter) to give it a try; and also hopefiully give them advice to make that experience better. if i can do that AND persuade you to crawl away and die, that'd be a bonus.
The last few posters have said the rest. I don't mean this to turn into a recruitment post, but i think being in a good, cohesive outfit massively improves your overall game experience, and since my outfit The Vindicators (VS, Emerald) are currently recruiting... look me up, ask anyone you see ingame with the Vindicators tag or check out www.thevindicators.com .

Its too bad the developers listen to the stupid type of customers, instead of those with vision. They didnt hear the smart beta testers who warned the devs about vehicles and how anyone can spawn one every 5 minutes. They didnt listen to the smart beta testers who warned the devs that although its on a 3 hour timer, an unstoppable deathray from the sky would totally unballance everything else in the game, cheapening the game. They didnt listen to the smart customers who warned the devs that Big F'ing Robots was a really retarded idea.
They didnt listen to the smart customers who had much much better ideas for turning the game into a thinking man's tactical game instead of more mindless FPS tools (Vehicleside, BFR's, OS).
Instead, the devs listen to the fanboys, the dumb ones, the mindless FPS customers who are perfectly happy bunnyhopping everywhere proclaiming, "I PWNED JOO!," in between taking hits from their weed-pipe.

big load of horse poop. OS every 30 seconds? Have you played PS at all? At most, there will be 5 OSs per 30 mins. And thats if we get lucky. OS= a great way for outnumbered troops to give some sort of resistance by destroying enemy spawn points. Its actually making defence worthwhile. Without it, whenever one side has below 40% of pop they would have no choice but to leave the cont because they wouldnt have any means to stop enemy from spawning at their base. Plus its very hard to get to CR5. I played PS on and off for 2 years and only one char of mine is CR4, the rest are either CR2 or CR0.

For pity's sake... STOP REPLYING to him please. All he does is try to shout people down, he neither puts forward arguments nor bothers to rebutt them, he just keeps on yelling. He's a troll, and he won't stop doing it until it stops working.

I had a beautiful view of the valley below and sent many enemy pilots to their deaths. All of a sudden this whiteish missle looking thing descending from a very high trajectory and struck me dead.

Actually, that sounds like a Flail, a one-cert Cave artillery piece you need a Vehcle Module for. big whitish-blue comet thing that arcs out of nowhere, right?
an Orbital Strike is a vertical beam. cooks anything within about a thirty metre radius, but it has a ten second timer from firing to detonation, and an animation which lasts four or five seconds bulding up to impact which anyone can see and, if you're quick, avoid. you need CR5 to get one, and it has a long timer on use - three hours i think. someone's unlikely to waste one on a lone AA MAX, but you'll probably have seen one in the distance - they're best used for killing AMS or clearing camped doors.

Indubidoubly. You will find those defend the Orbital Strike with the same ferocity as those who defended the Jedi class in SWG. They make more excuses then there are words in a dictionary.
meep meep, double post.

It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.

So... you're not actually going to refute anything i say, just hope you can scream "YOU'RE WRONG!" at me enough times that people will believe you? Keep your i-win-buttons, i've exhausted all logic and good arguements I can muster on this subject, too many times already before, Planetside can dig its own grave for all I care. If that is your idea of end-game content then so be it.
