Makes you think: A Dev's comment

Ok, this is what dev SWEDE posted somewhere in the long thread
The long SWG Thread

Quote:

====================================================================
Sorry, I was out sick when this thread was going on. My "secret project" was in fact an expansion. The reason I couldn't come out and say that was because we weren't sure we would go ahead with it and we have now decided not to. I'm still with SWG and I'm currently working on a high level content event that will be showed off at E3 and will be put in to the game in a publish (free of charge of course).

Sorry for causing a lot of concern, it was not my intention.

Sincerely,

Niklas "Swede" Johansson
Star Wars Galaxies Game Designer
====================================================================

The interessting bit is here:
>>was because we weren't sure we would go ahead (rem:with the expansion) with it and we have now decided
>>not to

1. SoE isnt deciding, its SoE AND LA
2. A moneymaker like an expansion isnt cancelled without an important reason

So i wonder...what made Lucas Art (and SoE) finally cancelling this Expansion ?

I dont believe in "we fix bugs first, then we add new stuff".
They were not doing this since 3 years and they wont change this now suddenly.

So it must be something else, something "in the piepe" drawing an expansion "MAYBE" worthless.
The only thing drawing an expansion worthless, is to take away the code its based on....

I dont say anything, i just wonder....

Claude

More than likely, the expansion that was in the works went against Smedleys new "plan" that hes spoken of, the game not being fun and then turning up the volume or whatever the hell he said. Before they add new expansions they need to make stuff from the current ones aquirable...like the YT-2400.

Or... the financing of said expansion got cut, and they're all heading to the life rafts. It certainly is interesting. It's either they are actually going to focus on the current players for once (sure they are...) or they are cutting off support. Hmmm.

Or this expansion was another combat upgrade and someone finally slapped him across the face.

Smed already stated on the "post-a-thon" the other day that they were working on a new expansion, but they decided to "postpone it while fixing the game".

I figure that if they release another expansion, even their supporters would be pissed about it.  And since SOE seems to be in let's-not-step-into-any-more-toes mode, they decided to pospone it and instead dangle a little carrot in front of the current players so they won't loose any more subs.

SOE knows what you like... You don't!

Lol if anyone wants any more proof that the player base they are going for is the 12 year old I want it all handed to me now people.. Check out this post from SWG forums.

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=swggpdiscussion&message.id=677262

The OP is actually complaining because he wants them to give him a flash speeder. Others go on to support this statement saying that the time of people getting stuff like that are over with. Don't the NGE starter kits, which is gheared for the kids, have the instant travel kit.

    /rant on

Im thinking screw SOE. Let them cater to the brady bunch... I want someone else to amke my sandbox game where you must be 18 or over to play.

Who wants to bet they will try and eventually push out an expansion by at least Christmas time? My guess -> digital download only, and a "small" expansion. Compared to others, and its rushed out the door like crazy. They will start work on it near the end of summer.

    Thats my bet.

  • RekrulRekrul Member Posts: 2,961

It was stated by one of the red names on the forum (Julio or Smed even), that they are releasing two expansions this year. That was before they stated there is no expansion "currently" in the works.

I see no reason why they shouldn't release two, one for summer, one for christmas. Despite the questionable quality, these things take time to make, so they are definitely in the pipeline already.

And I also see no reason why they shouldn't cost money. Those that play will pay.

The reason for expansion is simple. The majority of long-term player generated content is gone. Now they are forced to provide static content just to prolong the player's subscriptions. Patches and bug fixes are ok, but they don't affect content.

And the proverbial carebears do not care about GCW or any kind of form of pvp, so even fantastic realization of such systems would apeal to a small number of people (50-200 per server). This figure was always the same.

    I cant believe that...no....

If there is one thing you can bet your life on, its the greedyness of both; LA and SoE.
They NEVER cancelled an expansion so far, bugs or not, fun or not.

They were always about "lets do it, we fix/correct things while its up" - seeing the money an expansion could gain.

So i really have "problems" believing that they postponed this expansion for the sake of basic-game quality.

And esp. Lucas wouldnt do that....Lucas would be more like
"Well SoE, if you coded bad...your boo boo...fix it, work 25h...work 9 days a week, we dont care, but 01. May the expansion goes life or you face problems".

They did that to Bioware (Kotor Patch), they did that more then once to SoE, they are not "suddenly" facing the truth and start to miss money just because the remaining players are yapping for bugfixes.

I mean, in the past there were more then a quarter million players begging for bugfixes - and ignored. And now they suddenly start to do THAT - when just a minor remaining customerbase is partly asking for it ?

No...something is in the pipeline....dunno what...but something is....

Its just more PR spin people. Come on, when has SOE ever stopped to fix the game before adding expansions ?

Fact is there isnt enough players left to justify the costs of another expansion. Of course SOE will spin it to their benefit...ie. we have decided to fix things first.

You bet that the accounting dept of SOE said.."wait a sec, 40k players x $30 = 1.2 million

And thats if 100% of the remaining players all buy it. Expansions cost a lot more than 1.2 million to develop, therefore a net loss to SOE

SOE has repeatedly stated in the past that they will no longer release free content for this game. And they've proven that....the last free content (major) was the corellian corvette 2 years ago. The fact that they are doing it now says the game is dead

hmm yeah your right....been a while.

Back then they pumped out quite a few dungeons monthly. If I recall, it was Warren, Geonosian Cave, Corellian Corvette, and the DWB. Then nada

The DWB was a complete failure in my book. The mobs there were WAY to strong, and the allmighty reward for doing the zone (Mandolorian Armor) was complete shit. Jetpack was as well, both were just eyecandy, had no real purpose. The Geonosian Lab had pistol schematics, the DXR-6b schematic, as well as the drops from the Acklay, and all those nifty "spices" from the creatures. The Corvette had the Corsair clothing pieces with simple mods, as well as the cheap weapons, and the AV-21. The Warren I dont really recall anything from there, as I only went once and it was for a quest that I dont remember anything about.

Mando armour and the Jetpack are prestige rewards and if you see someone wearing them you know that a lot of time and effort went into getting it.  People kill hundreds of those wraiths and they might only get 1 or 2 BL's or PLCs.  I don't think you can call it a failure when nearly everyone has a Jetpack on their list of things to aquire.

There's more to the DWB then just the Mando armour and Jetpack.  There's the Mando wine schematics which was and still is one of the best buffs in the game, the DE-10 pistol schematic and barrels, Executioners Hack and others I'm probably forgetting.

The DE-10 stuff never droped, neither did the Executioners Hacks. There was a period of time in the game before the CU where those items went extinct basically because of that. And the Executioners Hack was worthless anyways, dumbass powerhammers were twice as good. I got my 1st DE-10 schem and barrel from a trade, and farmed for my 2nd set. Then they stoped dropping after that. I had people offering me 50million credits for my medicore 350 damage one. I had a friend that farmed that place daily for 5+ hours a day for a barrel and never got one, over a 2 month period until he gave up.

Well they arent going to stop an expansion because of lack of subscriptions, I think AC2 is a perfect example. Expansion comes out, a few months later the game is in Davy Jones locker.

I think something more simple is going on, the suposed release of ps 3 may come out for up coming xmass season. Took many of the those that were left staff that could code develop , as well as the expansion team and put the entire focus on getting games ready for launch of  ps 3.
I do think if the ps 3 comes out has high as 500 + they will lose the next generation console race just because of gas, electricty prices, oil prices home heating oil,  will just bring to much to consumers come fall, winter of 2006.
I do think the only reason the expansion was cancled had nada to do with bug fixes but the lack of player support, skeleton crew left to produce needed patches,  and the inability for the bean counters to show a profit for the expansion.
They will dangle free content for a while hope the subscription rates come back up coast till ps 3 release then decide there next course of action.
But they are running conserned not for the down fall of swg but for the possiblity of ps3 missing the mark completely .

Seeing as it brought forth the NGE, and the stupid Horadric Cube or whatever that thing is. OH SHINY!!!

Mustafar is great, if you want to get up to 90.

Its kind of a mandatory expanision if you want to get anywhere.

I don't think anything is in the pipeline. I blame Lucasarts, just as much as SOE. An original idea hasn't come out of Lucasarts in ages, neither has an original game. They have been just outputting Star Wars this, and Star Wars that, all of which use someone else's engine or someone else's model for a game.

I think XvT was one of the last good Star Wars games that came out that wasn't "dumbed down" for the masses. Rebellion was alright but it seemed a bit slow, and a bit dull, and difficult with a huge learning curve.

Ya know what.. This si something I never thought about... They took all the time and effort (if ya wanna call it that) to bring out mustafar... And 2 days after that came the NGE.. 1 of 2 things come to mind...1. Either they were going for a money grab knowing the NGE was coming out.. Or 2.  there was absolutely no communication among the different departments. I mean one would think that if it took that much moeny to make an expansion someone might of stood up and said.. Uhmm.. this ight not be a good idea... I mean I also wonder how much money went into the NGE....

I think the accountants had a nice spreadsheet that showed them that if every single current player bought said expansion, they'd be losing money on the development costs.

Then they showed them how 99% of the cancellations from the last 3 months came immediately following the next patch notes... since the bugs THEY hated weren't getting fixed.

Then the accountants said "You do this and we're finished"

    Simple.

Ya know Shayde, I hadn't thought of it like that. You are 100% on. What would stop SOE from spending the money to develop something that would make them more money? KNOWING full well they couldn't make their money back. You know how bad off an MMORPG has to be to NOT make money on an expansion? (rhetorical question)

Very good explanation, thank you !
    I guess thats what happend.

So what do we learned ?

SWG gets no expansion anymore because
    a) its so dead that even developing one would cover the costs
    b) in this situation we are not doing anything based on a code which is subject to be changed most likely

So SoE KNOWS that their game is so VERY down but still stick to their crappy NGE ?

    Hmmm.....astounding.....
