Let me start by saying I stopped playing FFXI a year ago (quit, resubscribed, quit again) and have been playing WoW since beta.
You'll most likely be happier with WoW. Warcraft is much easier to get into and most importantly, easier to solo and advance in.
I left FFXI on 2 seperate occasions for one reason - LFG for hours on end. FFXI is a well made game in my opinion and I enjoyed it in spurts, but requiring me to group for leveling got to be a pain. In WoW, you can experience a large portion of the game as a soloer and "graduate" to groups for the end-game.
I usually check the playonline website and various forums to see if Square has made some monumental change in regards to grouping....but nothing yet. I can dream. ;-)
wow is for weak mmorpg players, its easy, you dont have to play it much where ffxi is harder and fun and exciting and when you gain a level you really know you accomplished something because every level means new mobs essentally

Well, given, the avatar selection for monsters in FFXI that are faught are a bit bland, at least they're creative. Have you ever been enside the proms? Fighting the Empty? Does anyone know what those thigns are? lol FFXI has a very unique selection of monsters and it's very well done. You've got to remember that this game is for the ps2 as well, so technically, it's gona fall short in alot of areas like memmory, so they re-use graphics alot. But, i gurantee you if you're sitting in a party, you won't be saying "Wow, these crabs are remarkably simmilar to those I faught when i was level 15!" because, those stupid little blue crabs kick ASS x 3

I agree many people do indeed enjoy WoW because of solo content, but that's doesn't mean you HAVE to solo. As I stated, you can solo and you can group. You can go from 1-60 in a party and you can go 1-60 solo....that's the point I was trying to make, you can do either. Choice is good. I essentially grinded my main from 1-60 and continued playing him the last year in raids.
When I got a good group in FFXI, I had a blast, but that was my problem. I had to be in a group to do anything (that would advance my char lvl) and it was frustrating when groups weren't easily had.

While you might be okay with being an apologist for Square Enix, I'm not, remember they are competing for our business, we pay 15 (or more) a month to play these games, im not going to make excuses on behalf of them. All of FFXI's visual and design shortcomings definitely keep myself, and others away. The game is truly archaic, EverQuest in Final Fantasy clothing if you will.
You should really look into some other games, we've come a long way since EverQuest.

You know, even though I hate the raiding in WoW's end-game because of time-commitment and farming that is needed for it, I can say that the fights that are in the game are great. And pretty much everyone I heard told me that the boss fights that are added in the last few patches are among the best in any game released, and definitely a lot better made then FFXI's.
WoW is the best tutorial out there about MMORPGs in general.
I recommend a new player to start with WoW and then see what they like/dislike, remember the gameplay is relatively fast compare to other MMORPGs (really fast compare to FFXI).
An experience player from any MMORPG will have a lot of troubles to bear WoW unless they actually enjoy one of the 2 end-games in WoW. (No, I can't stand WoW myself, I would recommend going to CoV myself but...it wasn't in your options so...)

WoW is the most over-rated and shallowest game on the Market. FFXI is tons harder than WoW and therefore more rewarding. Granted the low lvls go slow, but once you reach lvl 12 and can got to Valkurm Dunes, the game picks up.
The people that have given their brainwashed opinions about WoW being better have obviously never played FFXI's end game.
Another plus is that one character can lvl any job. If you get tired of one job, switch to a different. On top of that you can mix any 2 jobs. Main job/subjob. There are more choices insofar as classes are concerned. The community is light years more mature than the community of WoW, as a whole, ever thought about being. You don't have to have 40 other people for monotonous raids.
WoW just plain sucks. I played since beta and to say that I'm burned out on WoW would be an understatement, where as I played FFXI for a year and a half before I quit. I quit right around the time Chains of Promathia came out. I just came back a few days ago, as I bought FFXI for my xbox360. I'm having tons more fun than I was playing WoW.
In closing, you should probably just keep playing both of them, because you're going to quickly exhaust the fun that WoW has to offer.

Ever heard of the word opinion? Why would I be brainwashed if I liked WoW more then FFXI?
I wasn't even a fan of the series and not really that interested in the game before I picked it up. However, I was completely burned out on FFXI a month or two before the open beta started and decided that there would be no harm testing it out. Well, after that I got the game on release day .
The thing is, I don't see that much depth in FFXI. Most things look like time sinks instead. Ok, the skillchain system is kinda neat at first, but when you are fighting in an experience party you choose the skillchains that you use at the start of the group and rarely do something different.
Sure, FFXI has an interesting class system, but in the end it doesn't work that well. If you want to level more then two or three jobs then you'll have constantly problems with space and need to use mules, which costs you extra money each month .
I didn't really like the community either. It seemed like every player was there to ruin your fun. You could almost never experiment and try to do things differently unless you were solo, and there's almost nothing you can do solo in the game (except for farming and leveling beastmaster). The forced grouping is lame as well. I don't mind grouping, but I'd rather just pick up some guys I come along while playing instead of looking for hours for the right group with exactly the right classes. Often, the times I enjoy the most in MMO's are when I meet some random people and hang around while just fooling around a bit, trying to see if we can kill something strong or looking for some special spot somewhere in the game. That actually happens a lot more in WoW then in FFXI. I do have to say that I seemed to have lucked out with the server I chose for WoW, since the community there was actually pretty mature. Except for the famous Barrens chat I actually enjoyed the community more then in FFXI. The forced grouping, combined with the elitist players in the game, caused a lot more friction there.
While I don't have any experience with FFXI endgame, what I heard about it sounds a lot worse then that of WoW. And I don't even like the end-game in the game, its the reason why I quit it. Still, I played WoW for a year and FFXI for 6 months. If FFXI wouldn't have been my first MMO I probably would have quit it after my first or second month though.
Aphex, you are obviously basing your opinion on out dated info, and I'm just as entitled to my opinon as you are to yours.
Alot has changed since you last played. There's a conquest ring you can buy at around lvl 9 for 1000 conquest points that gives you a 50% bonus on all exp gained. It has 7 charges and can be recharged by trading it to ANY guard of your faction for 100 conquest points. 1 charge last for 1000 bonus exp.
They also added a quest to unlock an NPC that can fight along side you. You can group with them and solo with any class instead of just BST. The NPC can also be added to parties, but they take up a member space.
Alot of changes have been made to all the jobs, and there are a few more changes on the way. They've added alot. Furthermore, I think that because you have to quest to unlock a new job it's much more rewarding.
Finally, you don't have to farm in this game to make money. Many people do and it's a common misconception that it's a must. It's alot easier to work smarter and not harder.
The difference between WoW and FFXI, to me, is that a child could play through 90% of the content in it, where as in FFXI they couldn't. FFXI takes alot more planning, knowledge, and attention.

And I have heard about the updates and they do sound ok, but I can't see how it suddenly make the game completely different. It might make it possible to solo for exp 30 minutes to an hour a day or so, but even then its a lot slower then a party and not a feasable way to make some decent progress.
In the end it might slightly speed up the leveling, but the speed is not necessarilly the problem. The problem is that the leveling is way too repetitive.
I think it's funny that you're calling FFXI repetitive in WoW's defense.
Isn't that like the pot calling the kettel black?
All MMOs by nature are repetitive. I just enjoy the depth of FFXI versus the shallowness of WoW. In FFXI to fish you gotta watch the cycle of the moon and the Vanadiel clock, that's depth. In WoW you just drop your pole in the water in a place that's equal to your fishing lvl. In FFXI you have to pay attention to the element that's strongest for that day when you want to craft and facing the direction of a certain constellation affects crafting. In WoW you just get all the ingredients and then click a button. In FFXI the quests aren't mundane in the respects that the quests in WoW are. In WoW you talk to someone read it or not, you still know what to do. In FFXI you can't do that as the dialogue is the clue to where to go, what to do next... unless you're using an FAQ, Walkthrough, or Strat Guide. Even travel is more in depth. You get on a ship in WoW it moves a bit and then zones to the destination. In FFXI at night pirates and ghosts attack ships on the water, you can fish off the boats as they move during the day.
All I'm trying to illustrate is that FFXI is a much more robust and deep MMO than WoW is. Even the people that love WoW agree that it's a shallow game.
I must say i have never played ffxi, have how ever been playing wow three motnhs and experienced the end game, and nearly done so with me second character. just for a note im lucky to spend more than 15 hours a week playing, so its not a good sign really. Now i can speak for FFXI but i guess its the adult fanatasy games, i can how evere make some assumption based on the fact that is an assian game. Yes the grind will be long (as stated in other places), the economy will be reasonable, may be slightly inflated but not to much (look at RF online happening there already) the graphics, well need i say anymore its FF afterall, and the combat as with all Asian MMO's requires thought, not just a simple same method everytime, but as i say i have not played FFXI, although i am going to buy it later to day, so maybe ill let you know my thoughts on it in a week or so once ive tried it out.

Awesome. I'm on Seraph and am in a really good linkshell there. If you want a world pass to seraph, I can get you one, and if you want into the ls.
Originally posted by TallonX I love how people love WoW because there's alot of solo content. Why would you want to play a MMO for the solo content :P
..its not that you play for the solo content.. its just it is bad enoguh you HAVE TO depend on other people to accomplish thigns sometimes.. so therefore your DEPENDING on the pople that play,society,etc.w/e.. it would be alot easier if you made more stuff soloable in FFXI.. WoW are not for really "weak" gamers either. Some just hate how bad they have to pay jsut to get so dam far in the game like myself in everquest.. I had to depend on people, even idoits.. they get you killed when your healer and dont do what they should do.. some..are also good to.. but it just bad you lose alot of EXP which takes hours to get back up and say finally regain my level! on a reside note.. if there was a game in which made death penalties like guidlwars where stats be Temporary down or you recive less exp for a certain timing would be alot more helpful. FFxi was adidcting at start till I had to depend on people for EVERYTHING.Thats how bad it is.. and myself I hate depending on others becuase i like stuff to get done hard sometimes.. but not with a big lost result or risk. FFXI-has great storyline, graphics, community, nice people, and great gameplay at times..its just horrible you have to group 24.7 after lvl 7 or some sort.
I played FFXI when I was 13 and played it a year and a half after that then I got the game again and played it for a few months, and no the game is not for Adults, but you have to be very mature to play it, Unlike most MMO's FFXI coming from square-enix and playonline it accualy reminds you that your playing final fnatasy, there is a storyline to it, that you don't see in many mmo's, when doing quests you get sucked into little cut scenes and something misterious happens and you want/have to do the next quest to find out whats happening, but in order to do that you need to hit a higher level, and what's even better is the depth of all this, theres a calendar and using astrology depends on how well certain options play. Fir instance, (I cant remember the names of everything so bear with me) but it could be a "Dark Day" where all Heal/support spells wont be as affective as they wold be on a egular day, but it could be a "Light Day" where all support magic is doubled in affect...and there is so much more, it effects the fishing/mining/logging item drops, monster/player strength and defence.
Another thing about FFXI I was impressed with was the player interactions and the social feel of the game, when I played on Bahamut the first thing I did was get lost..and I didn't know how to talk..but Oddly enough as soon as I walked out of the first room there was a lvl 75 Paladin standing there..and he said "Hey there, are you new?" and I couldn't reply but he told me how and gave me some starter items, added me to his friends and then took me out hunting...I was shocked NO game that I have ever played since has someone offered there help. He introduced me to his friends and put me in his Linkshell...and I always had someone to travell with and to be supported by untill I was a high enough level to fend for myself. And that's not all, The Idea of always needing a party is to help you make friends..Because of the Battle system..you have the ability to talk inbetween and during fights and get to know everyone.., this was GREAT whenever I'd be travelling alone I would always wander past someone I knew, and most of the time I'd end up starting alone and just before logging out that night i'd be standing with 10 or so people all just talking and having a great time..
Now, when I played WoW the game was so boring..all I did was run around and fight some childish looking creations...hardly living up to the name of a "Monster", I was let down by the graphics of the game form the start, but I still played for a month..and I noticed "WoW...This game Sucks.." I was almost the highest lvl in the game and I was bored..doing the same thing in every quest..and the social community sucks even more.. "Hey, Wanna help me on a Quest?" and either nobody would listen to you or they would all tell you to "Bugger off" it was just not a fun game to play..
I ended up selling my WoW account and Game to a friend..and Buying FFXI again shortly after but being older, I had less time on my hands to play it..having to put up with school, my job and social life..SO I had to give up FFXI again..because I didn't hae the money or time to play it..
Oh..and the Origional Reason I quit FFXI the first time is because My older brother got angry at me because I was having more fun in FFXI than him and he got pissed off and Deleted my character, and I didnt have the time or money.
Overall I would reccomend WoW to anyone who has a busy life and wants something that that held no challenge. and I would reccomend FFXI to someone who wanted a more in Depth game that they could play for longer and have more fun in.
FFXI is a pretty good MMORPG. I enjoyed it until I reached the levels where grouping becomes mandatory, while finding groups becomes time consuming and difficult. I prefer to spend about 80% of my MMO time solo, with the other 20% in quality group experiences. I actually enjoyed grouping in FFXI more than in many other MMORPGs, but not enough so to change my playing habits to 80% group 20% solo.
One of the coolest things for me was playing with the Japanese players. They were usually good in well played PUGs, but the language barrier made it hard to persue regular grouping with them.
Even though someone more solo than group oriented can possibly find a couple months of fun from the game, long term enjoyment really depends on the ability to adapt to madatory grouping and good in game personal networking skills. A large friends list and a good guild will lessen the frustration of spending more time looking for a group than actually playing in one.
WoW is more solo friendly, while also offering a payoff for group play and strong social networking. If you enjoy quests and exploration, you can play different races and classes and get different experiences. PvP battlegrounds can be a fun distraction as well. It's not perfect, but if you like being able to vary your play style to combat long term boredom, you can get a lot out of WoW.

are you lost? i think that your looking for WoW forums
Hmm, they are both good games. In all honesty, I ended up playing solo in most my time in WoW. I was a warlock, so it was realy easy. I would quest in a zone and totally exhaust the quests in that area, by that time I would be at a high enough level to move on. The only time I would realy enter a group was when I was fighting Elite mobs, or when I was in instances. I got to level 44 and quit because I got a GF and school was about to start, overall I had a realy good time. I had a guild, only used them for the company tho. The crafting was easy, which I realy enjoyed, it was the first time I could realy get into crafting, because the materials wern't that hard to come by and I didn't realy lose any money. Actually, I never bought materials. Since I was a soloer I could disenchant all my rares for materials, and cloth dropped on a normal basis for tailoring. The combat was pretty nice, and fast paced which I liked. The talent system was unique as well. While I never got to end-game I did look forward to it. In WoW the road to end-game was very fun. I played the game for a summer.
I played FF on a few occasions, quitting after about a month or two. I'm not dissing FF in any way, however. It was a very well done game, with nice design. The only downfall was the inflated economy. I am actually thinking about giving it another shot, actually. I haven't played it in over a year. Perhaps the economy has changed for the better.
Well, I've only played WoW. After nearly 2 years of playing I'm bored and have decided to quit. However, I still consider that a good run, and enjoyed playing lvls 1-60 more than once. Endgame becomes like a job, however, and I just got tired of it.
Now, I've look at some videos of this game, and the combat system looks dull and boring as hell. The mob models are dull too. And is there pvp in this game? How does that work with that slow ass combat system?
Despite WoW not being perfect in the PvP department, there were still many fun times to be had in AV, WSG, and AB.

SWG - Starsider - Jay-Me Adams - Dead
CoH & CoV - Closed
WoW - Caramipi - TVC
it would be alot easier if you made more stuff soloable in FFXI..
Ok, Im an ex-member of both WoW and FFXI....
It's not perfect, but if you like being able to vary your play style to combat long term boredom, you can get a lot out of WoW.

are you lost? i think that your looking for WoW forums
many WoW fanboys in this forum huh?
