Now, I've look at some videos of this game, and the combat system looks dull and boring as hell. The mob models are dull too. And is there pvp in this game? How does that work with that slow ass combat system? Despite WoW not being perfect in the PvP department, there were still many fun times to be had in AV, WSG, and AB.
Dude, Unless you have played both games and had first hand exp with both of them, you have no right to join this thread, you know nothing about FFXI or you wouldn't critisize the setup of it.
I think the biggest thing with mmo games is to have a group of people who you can levl with do quests or just have fun in the events. the thing about ffxi is how your ls is really close because the people who play are more mature you tend to be able to get more help then the little 5 year olds on WoW.The partying in ffxi is great everyone uses a combo at sertain times to give their mage a magic burst, and as said before you could have any job you want and even if you get bored just go into your mog house and use a diffrent job, ffxi was much better thought out then WoW when you think in a long term fashion, and if anyone is saying thats bad...WHY WOULD YOU PLAY A MMORPG

I totally agree, FFXI is much more mature, social and fun than WoW and in fact many other mmo's out on the market. In FFXI you make friends, you spend time with friends, the game doesnt revolve around grinding and has alot more depth in it, If you don't feel like lvling, you can go out do some quests, or go mining, logging, fishing, crafting and even just chill out with some friends because your sure to make a whole group of friends.
FFXI has so much to offer that most people dont understand due to immaturity, They just go out and start grinding wich isnt what FFXI is about, and then they complain about having to PT and all that jazz, where if they took time in playing FFXI properly and got Grinding out of there head they would have a great time, but FFXI isn't for everyone..I myself found WoW and plenty of other MMO's to be a big disapointment...
Oh, and The economy in FFXI is infalted, but that just means you have to take up a hobby, like mining,fishing,logging,woodwork,leatherwork,cooking....wich is accualy a good thing..it adds more Depth into the Game.
It's like trying to compare apple and orange. Both of the games have distinct differences that makes them appealing to two very different kinds of audiences.
POP music is considered to be the "mainstream" music but you always see people disrespecting pop music because its supposively "shallow." People that listen to jazz are considered to be connosieurs of music but often times you'll see the listeners of classic and jazz to be a portrayed as being overly serious, no-lifers that try to look like they're a part of some kind of an underground community. (forgive the stereotype, its just an example)
Same goes with WoW and FF. Through its party system, lack of solobility, and end-game content, FF places very heavy emphasis on community. You backstab someone or walk out on them or treat people with disrespect...your reputation will follow you around for as long as your play the game. Likewise, your inability to follow simple directions or failure to attend a given event (especially end-game content) can have very serious consequences to the outcome of the said events. Suffice it to say, it wont be long before you realize that community is the driving force of FF. You invest your time into pulling your weight in the community, and community in turn is what rewards you for your investment.
On the flip side, FF'ers bicker about WoW being shallow and light weight but that was the way WoW was designed to be. Its a easy game that is accessible to the majority of people who don't have anymore then 2-3 hours a day to play a game. From WoW's perspective, FF is a slow, restricting game that defeats the purpose of catering to the mainstream. The beauty of the WoW is what FFers find to be shallow, because you can walk in and out of the partys or solo your way up and treat the game as an off-line game and it won't make any difference because nobody really cares.
Bleh sorry this turned out to be such a long post, but...the only real way to comprehend the difference between the apple and orange, afterall, is to bite on both of them.

WoW started out shallow and light weight, but the influence of the 2 devs from EQ have seriousely turned WoW into a direction it didn't need to go in. 1-59 is shallow and light weight, but WoW's end game is not even close to being light weight. The end game is still shallow though, but you have to devout way too much time in raid instances.
I'm sorry, but I just don't like being tied to my computer for 4 plus hours straight to dungeon crawl through some crappy instance with 39 other people so on the off chance that my class's gear may drop and I have more DKP then the other people of the same class in the raid so I can get 1 piece of equipment that will soon be made obsolete by a new 40 man instance that is just like the one previous.

Anyone that keeps saying that WoW is just always about soloing is wrong you can solo lvl ezly but it ain't ez to lvl at higher lvls. WoW keeps the game intersting with Battle grounds, PvP servers and Instances where all your best gear comes from. WoW is a hundred times better then FFXI
FFXI's example of lvling is sittting in front of your computer and waiting for a party which must have certian types of jobs to even work. Where in WoW there is about 3-4 jobs for each potions that can work for any part of the party. There isn't one thing in FFXI thats can be done alone that would advance you. people that have no life and want to sit in front of there comp all day for about 3-5 accatual Work in the game out of the 12 hours you are logged in this is a game for you. O and before i forget enjoy the racist action between american players and the japanese players which is lamest thing i have ever seen in a MMO. the worst part of the game after lvl 40ish you can't have a party without a red mage or bard so the einter party depends on one job. and every 3-4 weeks this game loves to "NERF" jobs and "UN-NERF" other jobs its a constant pain, they add new jobs that can do the melee part of other jobs and "NERF" the older one so you are forced to start over.
If anyone wants to reply to this i have had a lvl 75 RDM ( was forced to lvl it to get anything done ) i quit the game about a week later after this. Have Fun sticking at lvls 50-55 for weeks if not days without high lvl help ( which isn't too hard to find but still ) cause without some retarded quest you can't lvl past those lvls.
FFXI's example of lvling is sittting in front of your computer and waiting for a party which must have certian types of jobs to even work.
Wrong. You can't grab jobs at random and expect a party to work, but there are many, many viable party setups, with many variations.
Where in WoW there is about 3-4 jobs for each potions that can work for any part of the party.
What a coincidence. In FFXI there are also three to four choices for each possible role in a party.
There isn't one thing in FFXI thats can be done alone that would advance you.
Wrong again. Gaining exp is not terribly solo-able, but there's many things that advance you that can be done solo. Just as an example, I personally soloed unlocking six of the advanced jobs. I did it at level 30, too, which is the earliest you're allowed to unlock those jobs. I also soloed getting all my teleport crystals, and all my supply runs for outpost teleports--the only ones undone are Ronfaure and Sarutabaruta (as they never come under Bastokan control--although I still hope) and Tavnazian Archipelago (because I haven't started doing Promathia yet).
people that have no life and want to sit in front of there comp all day for about 3-5 accatual Work in the game out of the 12 hours you are logged in this is a game for you.
I can't argue with this. I mean that literally, I can't argue with this, because I don't understand it. If you could rephrase it in English, perhaps...
O and before i forget enjoy the racist action between american players and the japanese players which is lamest thing i have ever seen in a MMO.
I've worked with JP players many times, sometimes ones who spoke no English (for which the auto-translate is a godsend). I can't say I've ever been subjected to racism from them.
the worst part of the game after lvl 40ish you can't have a party without a red mage or bard so the einter party depends on one job.
"A Red Mage or Bard" would be *two* jobs. And Corsair now can do the buffing that BRD or RDM does, so, as I said, 3-4 jobs for each role in a party. Plus which you do *not* have to have a Refresh in a party to make it work, although I will admit that many players are too fixated on one.
and every 3-4 weeks this game loves to "NERF" jobs and "UN-NERF" other jobs its a constant pain, they add new jobs that can do the melee part of other jobs and "NERF" the older one so you are forced to start over. I'm sorry you found the game too difficult. I wish you all the best with WoW.
WoW is exactly what it was designed to be... a faster-paced, easily accessible MMORPG that caters to a broader scope of players, particularly those who prefer faster and shorter term gratification than rewards that take more time to work for.
FFXI is exactly what it was designed to be... an online version of Final Fantasy where, just like in the single player games - revolves around things being done in *parties* - not solo. It amazes me how many people don't seem to get that. Final Fantasy has *always* been a party-centric game. XI is no different. Complaining that it's too focused on partying is,to me, like complaining that a bicycle only has two wheels.
Now, I've played both for some time and in the end I believe FFXI is ultimately the more rewarding and more challenging and *certainly* has the most depth and flexibility.
Also, FFXI requires you to work for and *earn* anything that benefits your characters. Wow more or less hands much to you on a platter.
Some examples:
Jobs/Classes:
WoW: Choose your final class at level 1 and that is what you are until level cap.
FFXI: 6 starting jobs to choose from and change between at will. At level 18, you can unlock the ability to have a main/sub combo. 6x5 (since you can't main/sub the same job, else it would be 6x6) = 30 possible job combinations. As of level 30, you can unlock "advanced jobs", adding another 12 colors to the palette (as of ToA). 18x17 = 306 possible job/subjob combinations.
Granted many combos aren't viable, but nonetheless, they are options.
Each main/sub combo brings alot of variety and nuance to the gameplay that must be learned and mastered to make the player effective.
In classes/jobs, FFXI clearly takes it in options/depth.
Fishing:
WoW: Throw out your line, click on the bobber when it starts moving. Moments later, you have a fish.. and get skill points. Even if you catch a boot, you get fishing skill points.
FFXI: Factors such as, what rod you use, what bait you use, where you're fishing, the moon phase, the weather, the time of day and how long you've been fishing for all factor into your success. Further, since an update, fishing is now interactive, you must effectively "fight" the fish in order to successfully land it. It's possible to break your line, lose the fish or break your pole.
In fishing, FFXI clearly takes it in detail and depth.
Groups/Battles
WoW Fighting in WoW is a fast paced, key-jamming affair; with a feel that's closer to an action game than a RPG. There's some strategy involved and people have to carry out their basic responsibilites (tanking, healing, etc), but I never, personally, felt that a player's ability to play their role "well" ever made so overwhelming a difference. It's very forgiving.. ie. easier.
FFXI Group composition is a very important factor and knowledge of your job/subjob and its role in a group - as well as an understanding of others' responsibilities is key. A weak player can lead to a dead party. Mob behavior, elemental strength/weakness, attacks to be prepared for, aggro/passive, etc.. are all critical to know from the pull to the fight. Mob control is critical.
Fighting is delay/quasi turn-based. This makes for slower fighting but also serves the purpose of allowing party members to coordinate attacks, setup skill-chains and make critical decisions based on the direction the fight is going.
Skill Chains require understanding of each job's weapon skills, their element and which to combine for the most effectiveness against the mob at hand. Black Mages can add to this with a Magic Burst, causing even more damage and a faster fight. All this requires alot of coordination and communication as well, alerting key members of how much TP you have, when the SC is going to begin, etc.
Efficiency in fighting mobs of "even" or higher allows for XP-Chains... bonus XP that increases with each additional kill in the chain.. further increasing the gain of XP (and justifying the use of Skill Chains to take mobs down faster).
In the end, I would say FFXI definitely takes it in depth and complexity where groups/battles are concerned as well.
And.. over all, yes, FFXI is a much deeper and challenging game than WoW. But again, that's not necessarily a "flaw". Each game is exactly what its developer intended it to be. Play which ever suits you best and enjoy it.

Been a while since i checked this website. i will belive you when you send me a screen shot at zelos_blade@yahoo.com with a party you are in without a Red mage or bard and/or paladian or ninja. if you send me this i'll edit my responce to FFXI o btw these screen shots must be in lvl process not lvling up weapon skills again sonething that can't be done alone at higher lvls wihout being a certian job if you can there is always a good chance of getting your a$$ kicked. I was able to solo lvl my rdm's skills again a job which acuatlly can countinously solo at certian lvls.
Impossbile that you soloed getting samuri or dragoon job at lvl 30, getting crystals at crag's can be done at lvl 1 simply cause there isn't much to stop you.
Soloing missions after 2-3 / at 2-3 except 3-4 exceptiion's till rank 5 i seriours doubt you soloed mobs that take full parties to have a minor chance at doing again half of this requires certian jobs in the party or can't be done. ( EX: whm, rdm, brd, pld, nin or rouge ) my dragoon no one invited cause of sprit link, my drk no one invited cause soul eater, yet when i am on my rdm or brd i can't stop the invite messages or even whm or blm.
Supermly impossbile to solo limit break classes, supermly impossbile to do stuff that yeilds you a lot of gil ( EX: BCNM's, NMBCNM's, HNM's etc. )
E-Mail Me Anytime: Zelos_blade@yahoo.com with those screen shots of parties about 45 without rdm or brd and/or pld or nin. i seen most of the game so just any term or play you want.
O before i forget the group battles, knowing your job incridlely i can play Whm and my Rdm per every Fight in exping groups with 2 macroses, spam Cure II or Cure III or Spam Refresh and wait for dispelling effects to come up O and it was very very hard to set up a provoke macro to provoke every 30 sec's unlike in WoW which i don't play anymore either its not so ez to tank when you as a warrior have access to over 30 skills in 3 diff stances learn that :P Defence stance, bererkers stance and battle stances each stance gives you access to diff skills or dealing damage and to get some hate.

That all look the same -- you know, like, blue crabs?
Well, given, the avatar selection for monsters in FFXI that are faught are a bit bland, at least they're creative. Have you ever been enside the proms? Fighting the Empty? Does anyone know what those thigns are? lol FFXI has a very unique selection of monsters and it's very well done. You've got to remember that this game is for the ps2 as well, so technically, it's gona fall short in alot of areas like memmory, so they re-use graphics alot. But, i gurantee you if you're sitting in a party, you won't be saying "Wow, these crabs are remarkably simmilar to those I faught when i was level 15!" because, those stupid little blue crabs kick ASS x 3
While you might be okay with being an apologist for Square Enix, I'm not, remember they are competing for our business, we pay 15 (or more) a month to play these games, im not going to make excuses on behalf of them. All of FFXI's visual and design shortcomings definitely keep myself, and others away. The game is truly archaic, EverQuest in Final Fantasy clothing if you will.
You should really look into some other games, we've come a long way since EverQuest.
Wow. Such an arrogant tone. You're not going to apologize for them? Who's asking you to? And who'd care if you did? You're a gamer with an opinion like everyone else. Which, by the way, is what your comments about "FFXI's visual and design shortcomings" amounts to. No matter how you dress them up, they're still just your opinions.. no better or worse, or more right or more wrong than anyone else's.
Get over yourself.

You know, even though I hate the raiding in WoW's end-game because of time-commitment and farming that is needed for it, I can say that the fights that are in the game are great. And pretty much everyone I heard told me that the boss fights that are added in the last few patches are among the best in any game released, and definitely a lot better made then FFXI's. I love these definitive, absolute comments "definitely alot better made then [sic] FFXI's".
lol.. again.. *opinions*. These are your *opinions* people. Please, stop stating them as "fact".

Originally posted by Aphex Originally posted by Kryogenic Aphex, you are obviously basing your opinion on out dated info, and I'm just as entitled to my opinon as you are to yours. Alot has changed since you last played. There's a conquest ring you can buy at around lvl 9 for 1000 conquest points that gives you a 50% bonus on all exp gained. It has 7 charges and can be recharged by trading it to ANY guard of your faction for 100 conquest points. 1 charge last for 1000 bonus exp. They also added a quest to unlock an NPC that can fight along side you. You can group with them and solo with any class instead of just BST. The NPC can also be added to parties, but they take up a member space. Alot of changes have been made to all the jobs, and there are a few more changes on the way. They've added alot. Furthermore, I think that because you have to quest to unlock a new job it's much more rewarding. Finally, you don't have to farm in this game to make money. Many people do and it's a common misconception that it's a must. It's alot easier to work smarter and not harder. The difference between WoW and FFXI, to me, is that a child could play through 90% of the content in it, where as in FFXI they couldn't. FFXI takes alot more planning, knowledge, and attention.
And I have heard about the updates and they do sound ok, but I can't see how it suddenly make the game completely different. It might make it possible to solo for exp 30 minutes to an hour a day or so, but even then its a lot slower then a party and not a feasable way to make some decent progress.
In the end it might slightly speed up the leveling, but the speed is not necessarilly the problem. The problem is that the leveling is way too repetitive.
Hmm.. Can you please define what "decent progress" is for us in absolute terms? I keep hearing people talking of how "it takes too long to level" or "leveling is too slow"... Compared to what? What absolute measure has ever been declared of how long it should take to do *anything* in a MMO? And, who would have the authority to say so?
That's right.. nobody.
It boils down to the individual. And Aphex, you are sitting there drawing conclusions on partial information about something you have not, yourself, experienced... Your comment should have stopped at:
"And I have heard about the updates and they do sound ok, but I can't see how it suddenly make the game completely different."
After that it's all blind supposition. The only way you could answer the question you pose is by playing it and trying it for yourself.
And the "leveling being too repetitive" is your opinion. Sure others share it, but then many others don't.
Again... opinions.

Your a noob, I solo'd 32-33 on my THF, although it took 6 hours.
And all that "You can't solo in FFXI" is just a bunch of bullshit. Okey, some jobs can't.
THF, NIN, BST, BLU, RDM are all great solo jobs. Though other jobs can also solo, but not effciently.
FFXI is a very challenging game, and the more you know the easier it is. Though, there is lots to know, LOTS LOTS LOTS LOTS...
Well speaking as someone who's levelled just about every job to about 30 or 40 with two 75s (I've levelled a total of 654 times myself), I finally had my fill of the game.
You can't get anything done anymore. On average, 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 at any given time on at least two servers are level 75 (doesn't include those levelling subjobs nor those who are /anon). All they want to do is merit. They never do ANYTHING else. As for the others, they're bazaaring out in Rolanberry or the new swarm of RMT denizens. Levelling anything now is just an unbelieveable chore.
This game has definitely gone WAY past it's best before date.
The story is crap. It's pretty run-of-the-mill. To get THROUGH the story you can't do anything alone, and since all everyone does now is merit and camp Zipacna, well, if you're there for the story, you're gonna have to wait, and wait and wait. Log out. Return the next to day to wait some more.

3) WoW seems pretty short 2 weeks and your done and bored, FFXI actually has content with quests ,missions and stuff to do not just loads of raids or whatever <.<
In short FFXI > WoW If you want to play a MMORPG as a MMORPG
Comments
I think WoW was a huge disapointment

Bleh sorry this turned out to be such a long post, but...the only real way to comprehend the difference between the apple and orange, afterall, is to bite on both of them.
good luck
And for the record, I'd rather listen to music created by musicians than music created by premadonna 30 year-old-men who sing lyrics that sound like they were written by some 14 year old whiney, angsty girl.
What does Madonna have to do with music?

Wrong. You can't grab jobs at random and expect a party to work, but there are many, many viable party setups, with many variations.
What a coincidence. In FFXI there are also three to four choices for each possible role in a party.
I can't argue with this. I mean that literally, I can't argue with this, because I don't understand it. If you could rephrase it in English, perhaps...
I've worked with JP players many times, sometimes ones who spoke no English (for which the auto-translate is a godsend). I can't say I've ever been subjected to racism from them.

WoW:
Choose your final class at level 1 and that is what you are until level cap.
FFXI:
6 starting jobs to choose from and change between at will.
18x17 = 306 possible job/subjob combinations.
Granted many combos aren't viable, but nonetheless, they are options.
Each main/sub combo brings alot of variety and nuance to the gameplay that must be learned and mastered to make the player effective.
In classes/jobs, FFXI clearly takes it in options/depth.
Fishing:
WoW:
Throw out your line, click on the bobber when it starts moving. Moments later, you have a fish.. and get skill points. Even if you catch a boot, you get fishing skill points.
FFXI:
Factors such as, what rod you use, what bait you use, where you're fishing, the moon phase, the weather, the time of day and how long you've been fishing for all factor into your success. Further, since an update, fishing is now interactive, you must effectively "fight" the fish in order to successfully land it. It's possible to break your line, lose the fish or break your pole.
In fishing, FFXI clearly takes it in detail and depth.
Groups/Battles
WoW
Fighting in WoW is a fast paced, key-jamming affair; with a feel that's closer to an action game than a RPG. There's some strategy involved and people have to carry out their basic responsibilites (tanking, healing, etc), but I never, personally, felt that a player's ability to play their role "well" ever made so overwhelming a difference. It's very forgiving.. ie. easier.
FFXI
Group composition is a very important factor and knowledge of your job/subjob and its role in a group - as well as an understanding of others' responsibilities is key.

Damn Noobs Necorposting ; ;
Edit: Thanks for the e-mail addy btw, I'm going to sign you up for buckets of porn ^.^

I love these definitive, absolute comments "definitely alot better made then [sic] FFXI's".
lol.. again.. *opinions*. These are your *opinions* people. Please, stop stating them as "fact".

Again... opinions.

Can someone translate that into English for me?
Or.. maybe run it through a spell-checker?

WoW is a easy MMORPG which doesnt require all of your time.
FFXI on the other hand is insane time consuming. If you want a game that you can play for YEAAAAAAAAAARs, go for FFXI.
If you just want try a MMORPG for a short while, go for WoW..
Get on mah level hoe
"Impossbile that you soloed getting samuri or dragoon job at lvl 30, getting crystals at crag's can be done at lvl 1 simply cause there isn't much to stop you."
Get on mah level hoe
