Guild Wars is an MMORPG. It is a Massive Multiplayer Online game, and its an RPG.

But I totally agree that it sucks. The highest lvl u can be is 20 which is gay because i got to lvl 20 in 1 week. Another thing is that so many people are lvl 20 that no one is really famouse. If you see a lvl 20 you'll be like w/e so isnt everyone else. Another thing is that outside of twons is private so no one else is there xept for you and your party. Also, there is no open PK and the closest to that is PvP or GvG which IMO sucks. IMO i didnt like GW too much. I say it was a waste of 40$.

I now play Conquer Online Which the lvl cap is 130 then u can get reborn into another class and u can get to lvl 130 again. Also, the world isnt as big as GW so if you are lvl 130 you become rly famouse. Also there is open PK and you can PK anyone at any lvl. Another thing is GvG in Conquer OWNS. Go on google video or youtube.com and see some GvG action in Conquer Online.

That is my oppinion on GW. Im out.

P.S. - BTW, My CO (Conquer Online) Hours are so high cause there is a Training Ground where you can go overnight or while your out and it slowly raises your % so you lvl a little faster.

Life is the best MMORPG. I PKed some noob yesterday and all my PK points are down... but the cops are still after me... WTF?

I used to worry about the kind of games being called "RPG" these days, but then I realized that most people these days think that "role-playing game" means you level up some fictional character in a game and collect weapons.

I guess nobody ever bothered playing tabletop RPGs for anything more than some numbers on a sheet of paper.  That truly saddens me, because if all you want is a "big score", you could play Asteroids on an old Atari 2600 for God's sake.  Without the interactive narrative, these "MMORPGs" are just highly convoluted action/adventure games with a built-in chat system.

That being the case, there is almost not one game in the list on this website that fits what should be the real definition of an MMORPG: a game based on interactive fictional narrative, with certain rules and mechanics to resolve specific situations, that is played online simultaneously (in the same persistant state world) by an exceedingly large number of subscribed players.

You guys want to get technical, I'm old-school.  I was rolling the bones on basic D&D (not that 3rd edition stuff, either; I'm talking the old Red Box stuff here) when some of these MMORPG gamers were still sucking on a bottle of milk.  Maybe that makes me old, but at least it also makes me remember how far - and how short - we've come since then.

Well, enough rambling from me.  Don't let my silly knowledge of what gaming has been and is prevent a good flame war from starting over what you guys want to call a game.  I mean, if people actually think WOW or EQ or UO or any of these things were anything like actual role-playing, there's not much I'll do to convince them that arguing about GW being on the MMORPG list is as foolish as it gets...

Bottom line, it's not an MMORPG and it doesn't belong here. Give those 2 spots for games that have persistant worlds, or at least the ability to play with more than a handful of other people at the same time.

Could u try and be a bit more inflamatory?

    It's not a mmo? So ********* what?

I'm tired of guys who keep complaining about it! It doesn't hurt there are 2 spots filled(it not like the spots are very limited) with games that aren't completely MMO

What about all these so called "MMORPGs", there's a lot of them I wouldn't even call game. But I don't whine about it.

"every game that u see on the game list that is out is a real mmorpg except World war II(that game is kinda crappy)"

Why would you make a conclusion like that when you have absolutely no knowledge about that game. WWII online is as much an MMO as at least half of that list.

As for the argument, Guild Wars, IMO, is not a proper MMO, seeing as how it doesn't fit the bill of a fully persistant world (and having game events once every six months in a town doesn't count.) However, this doesn't mean that it is not as enjoyable a game as the other MMOs out there. It's play style is a lot more faced paced and involving more tight-knit teams (or not if your playing a random arena). I don't think its players are gonna be fleeing in droves when they realize it doesn't fit the genre of an "MMORPG".

And to Jackcolt, I think they are talking about the 2 spaces that Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions currently take up on the front page's top MMORPGs. This is actually pretty significant, since I remember that being my point of base when I first arrived here.

Ah, me too. The good old days, eh?

Seriously though, good post. Personally, I quite enjoy Guild Wars. Maybe it isn't like other MMORPGs on this site, maybe it shouldn't be listed as one. But as far as I'm concerned, none of the games are really RPGs in the same way that tabletop RPGs are, which is not to say that I don't enjoy playing them.

Actually, I think we should take the term MMORPG and forget that it actually stands for something...just make it a name in itself. Happens all the time in business - abbreviations become the names of companies and then everyone forgets what the original stood for.

So for you a good MMO is one with nearly unlimited level grinding, a pk system that allows ganking of noobs, and where time spent afk in a training ground equals fame?

I feel so sorry for you. There are so many games with wonderful content and you are spending all your time in CO.

Anyway back on topic, guild wars reallllllllly suxrs. They went a little to far making everyones character equal (item wise). Then they added the free pvp character option that just watered down every class and turned pvp into a copy and paste fest.

The pve is a complete joke so i wont even get into that aspect.

So I get a warning that I'm going to be banned because of this thread. You say I'm trolling, Elnator? Because our opinionis differ? Get off your high horse man. 20 people playing together is not massive multiplayer online action. I get 64 in Battlefield 2. You get all indignant because I listen to what you say and disagree and I wasn't even abusive or anything. I haven't said anything even remotely harsh or inflammatory or defamatory. Well besides the title of the thread, which I already apologized for.

If I can't have a simple discussion about whether or not a game fits the definition of MMORPG without a person I have played with in games getting so incensed that he reports me for trolling then what is a forum good for anyway? I didn't swear or bereate anyone for disagreeing, I simply state my opinion.

You said something in your post where I bash anything that isn't the game I'm a rabid fanboi of at the time. That's a lie. Show me one post bashing any mmorpg on this site. I dare you. You're wrong and I'm right and the mods make money having Guild Wars on this site so I might even get banned because of it.

    Pfft.

S'cuse me?  When did I say you were gonna get banned?  Good lord get off the pipe bud.  I like you AA but damn you are hateful whenever someone differs in opinion from you.  I never once said you would get banned.  Nor do I even have the authority do do so.  I'm just a member of the forums, just like you... DUH... now... if the MODS gave you a warning then maybe you need to consider that yes, in fact, you are trolling.  GASP.

You have in fact bashed many games on this site.  I've seen you bash WoW in the SWG forums when you were rabidly defending the NGE for a while.  You bashed a few other games in there as well.  Then when you swapped to DAOC you didn't hesitate to start bashing WoW there either.  So, yes, you have bashed other titles.  Not to the extent that you have bashed Guild Wars but yes, you did indeed bash them.  You get... hmm... overzealous in your promotion of whichever game you're currently in love with.  It's not necessarily a bad trait but it does get annoying.  And your rabid hatred of any inference that Guild Wars is an MMO just perplexes me.  In the cities in GW there are HUNDREDS of players interacting, playing the game, all in one area.  You keep saying "only 20 or so" and act like that's some kind of fact.  But the fact is that there are multiple areas of Guild Wars where hundreds of people can be in the same place together.  Just because you CHOOSE not to think of it as an MMORPG doesn't mean it doesn't fit the definition.

And, in point of fact, I never "reported" you for anything.  Why would I?  I could care less.  If someone reported you it was not me.  In fact I got warned the other day for saying that DDO sucked when I said I "Tried the trial and I think it sucks" in a thread without stating why I thought it sucked :)

I played D&D before the red box, thanks.  We used paper and pamphlets (not even modules) back then.  I remember how glad we were when the basic set came out with a consolodated set of rules FINALLY.

Matter of fact now that I think about it I still have most of my original D&D and AD&D sealed in airtight bags up in the attic :)  Figure it's prolly worth some money now :)  LOL   I still play both 2nd ediition and 3rd edition with friends every Friday.  We play over IRC though since we're all over the country now.

That my friend is called balance.

So, what we have learned is that GW has balance, there is no ganking in PVP or GvG, no kill stealing, no level grinding, and no camping.

Sounds like to me they have eliminated all the bad elements of the genre.

Guild Wars is a great game for anyone that likes skill pvp, instead of the usual pvp of clicking your best 3 skills and waiting for them to recharge.  Who cares if the towns and missions are instanced ........ The game is built FOR pvp, just like they say... not the constant grind of PvE that you probably like.  The pvp system in Guild Wars is very good and it should be on this site as an MMORPG because it is:
    1. Massively Multiplayer
    2. Online

    3. And its an RPG!! go figure....

Well, not everyone wants non-stop action all the time.  I've put over 900 hours in Guild Wars, got every skill, max gold, rank 5, beat the PvE seven times.

I'm bored of it and gave my account away.  Let me quote something here to make people understand what Guild Wars is really about.

Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?

Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences. Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, loot stealing, and standing in a queue in order to complete a quest.

Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. In Guild Wars much of the tedium of traveling through the world has been eliminated. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they have previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.

Players in Guild Wars can play with or against players from around the world in the global tournaments and arenas. And while players are initially placed in a region based on their selected language (so that there is a greater likelihood that others will be speaking their language) they can join up in the always-available International District to form parties and to play with anyone from anywhere in the world.

good graphics, good play, but this game still is missing something.

However I play more RTS than MMO's, this game is fun when you need a quick fix.
