I don't get it.Pretty much everyone says the game moves along slowly. So the object is to bore players through the game to what?build up skills?ok im fine with that but most other games start building skills right away and don't need to bore the player through it...well no more than any other game that is.
Never once have i seen a fanbois explain how intuitive the battle system is.Honestly ..can it even come within a whisker of FFXI's battle system?dual classes/unique mobs with unique skills/chainskills/spells/party formation changes how you battle. I mean without dwelling on it any further i could write a novel on the different aspects of battle in FFXi.Perhaps the fan base is saying the statistical side of the game is the best? That seems a little boring as far im concerned since statistical games are a thing of the past.
Perhaps quests are very good in this game?I think eq2 has a ton of great quests ,how does EVE compare? Are the quests party related ?solo? How hard are they?DO they involve thinking or just based off the skills you built up through that long boring haul ,the game seems to put everyone through?
Honestly does this game offer any better mechanics that other games dont have other than using spaceships?I have seen players post that a player 2 weeks into the game can compete ?Is this because the game is that intuitive or just because its battle system is that simple?
Is the game guild based? Are the players who are posting how great this game is based in very large/helpful clans?Would a player not in the same beneficial clan you might be in still enjoy the game?
I guess you can see where i' m going with so many questions. So many people mislead others without looking at the whole picture. Some people can play a game 6 hours a day therefore think everyone else can enjoy the game the same only playing casually.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

so why come to a thread to troll it when yer so misinformed?
nodoby is going to defend the game in this thread, thats not what its about. you act as if there needs to be an explanation as to why people who play it enjoy it. why? to give you more reason to troll it?
why do people always expect a thorough report from gamers who enjoy a game they dont? if you like it cool, if you dont.. so what? if you dont know if you like it or dislike it (because you never bothered to visit the game site or do your own research and draw your own conclusions..much less have played it) you have no reason to question either..do you?
ps. i just farted.

EVE isn't like so many quest based level treadmill games out there. The simple fact of the matter is that these comparisons are not even remotely applicable to EVE's game mechanics. It really is the antithesis of games like FFXI (in a positive way of course). I invite you to visit the forums here or try the trial if you would like to understand the game more, as answering all of your questions would take a thread of its own.

I'll answer your questions in the belief you want to know and arent trolling.
First part: Yes, it has totally different game mechanics. To compare the PVP with other MMOs, imagine this: When you loose in PVP you drop everything you have fitted on your avatar incl. your backpack - and the kill can take what hasnt been destroyed. Being a game where PVP is possible anywhere you see how this is a game where consequence of your actions are what determines your outcome.
Second part: EVE is built upon corporations (guilds/clans in other games) as this is the center of the interactions. Corporations can form alliances and you can wage war among the corporations and/or alliances. These wars costs money to uphold - thus there are several mercenary corporations that make a living doing excatly this.
Outside the empire factions (the four races, all human) there is lawless lands (called 0.0 space because of it's 0.0 security rating = no police/navy etc.) This huge amount of space is divided up into regions and is fought over by corporations and alliances and have been changing hands for three years. These regions are also the richest which is why they are wanted by so many player factions. Alliances form NAPs (non agressions pacts) and MDPs (mutual defence pacts) and war is wages for territory or revenge etc. - all the human emotions. These wars can include several thousand players working for a common goal towards other players = PVP. Not long ago was the first real EVE wide war with several alliances grouping together and fighting each other - at peak it involved over 15000 characters both sides combined.
The reason why a new player is valuable is that the easiest ship class to fly is the frigate class, it's also a skill every character start out with, the ability to fly their own races frigates. These ships are small, fast and very agile. Once your skill grow you gain the ability to fly bigger ship classes and advanced versions of each class (frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battlecruisers, battleships and then on to capital ships). When doing PVP you send in the frigates to 'warp scramble' the enemy ships as frigates will be able to get in quick and lock the enemy ships down so they cant escape while (trying) to avoid being shot, and until your friends arrive and kill the enemies. The bigger the ship, the slower they are but the bigger punch they pack. This is why frigates are a VERY valuable asset to any corporation.
Personally I've played since the server went online (and before in the Beta) and my favorite ship class is still the cruiser class even though I can fly most of the ships in the game I prefer the cruisers (the advanced once named heavy assault cruisers or force recon cruisers).
This is the short answers to your questions - what EVE requires more than anything is patience, it has a steep learning curve and is very slow paced to begin with. Being a social person in RL and the ability to interact with other people will get you into the fun side of the game alot faster, way too many people have been stuck in a the usual MMO grinding of NPCs which this game is not about, the developers still have normal anonymous characters that PVP on equal terms with the players because it's so fun. 99,99% of the 'haters' you see enter a thread like this and spew hatred are the once that either are too social handicapped to involve themselves in teamwork and/or got stuck grinding NPCs because they were too afraid to PVP and try out the reason CCP created the game in the first place.
Congrats to EVE! I love the game for what it's been able to accomplish but have a really hard time playing it to a point where I can actually do what I want. See I'm a huge PvP fan and EVE offers the only true PVP system, but I hate not being in control of how long it takes me to become viable in PvP.
Even if you only want to fly frigates, it still takes a couple of months to train up the skills you need to be sucessful. This is a mandatory time sink and not one that can be affected. No matter how much I play the game I cant change the pace at which I learn new skills, and that is aggrevating to me. Everytime I try the game again, I'm left feeling like I'm not accomplishing anything besides a repetitive mineral/rat grind.
This is really too bad because I'd love to participate in the large scale battles between alliances and corps, I've seen the videos and they look so much more intense then anything I've seen from other games.
Maybe I'll try it again in a few months when I have some more cash - I'm just afraid I wont be able to put up with the initial time sink again =/

Congrats to CCP for making such a successful game. As to the few haters posting here bashing EVE just ignore them. I don't play EVE, it's not my thing, I find it boring. That doesn't make it a bad game it just means it's a game that doesn't appeal to me.
It's a good game, very very deep and one of the few (2) sandbox MMORPG's still on the market.

I hope this answers you questions
- Drilla (Character name)
Shinra (Corporation)
Lotka Volterra (Alliance)
P.S. It's too hot outside and the beer isnt getting colder so I didnt to a check for spelling, hope it's not too unreadable.
Even though I have taken a break from the game right now, it is the only MMORPG that has me coming back again and again.
